Any idea why they say that soil is only for use "in the ground?" Why couldn't it be used as potting soil for propagating outdoor perennials?

Potting soil needs aeration. Usually perlite or vermiculite, but other possibilities. This will stay water logged, and not go through the proper wet/dry cycles. Your roots need air, and this will drown them.

reply to ? below - not the forum for this, but...

my initial non-sober response would be where else would you use it? Indoor would only be container growing, unless you live on a dirt floor.
but... growing in-ground is just different. If you had poor draining soil, I probably wouldn't add this. But if you have sand, or good draining soil, this can help retain moisture for a longer period, which maybe you need.

this isnt the greatest soil. At least in years past you will find particles that arent as desired (pallets, plastic), but at $1.50 it aint bad. Quality will vary depending on production plant, or even batch to batch.

Thanks. So why use it outdoors?

Mike

As was touched on earlier, to amend sad soil.

Reading the reviews, this may not have the best qualities. If it was a good product, it would be a good price for top soil / yard.

Thanks, I'll skip it then. Here's an excerpt from one of the Miracle Grow reps, in response to a complaint that the soil appeared to be ground mulch:

"Most of our soils are made of composted forest products and contain very little, if any, actual soil. These composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction and allows for air to reach the roots of the plant which improves plant performance."

I have a ton of oaks, I can recreate this with mulched leaves.

The other complaints about finding glass and other trash were more concerning. I've bought lots of their products over the years, including a bunch of potting soil to amend the dirt here when planting perennials. Have never had a problem like the ones described for this product!

Picked up my 30 bags this morning. It’s not great quality but I use this stuff to fill groundhog holes and random maintenance. The bags make it easy to lug around the yard.

I’ve used this website several times with great success:
https://wearecoupons.com/home-depot-coupons

Unrelated, not technically clearance but a great deal IMO if you’re looking for 3/8” SAE impact sockets. $10.97, but gets another 20% off if you buy 2 or more eligible GearWrench product. I just happened to need the metric set as well, so I wound up paying $8.78 for the SAE set:

People selling coupons are essentially scammers, they are stealing legitimate coupons and spamming the seminars with bots to get the coupons. Please don't support them by buying their stolen coupons.

If you go to https://www.homedepot.com/workshops you can sign up for workshops and earn 15% off coupons. You can also get legitimate coupons for signing up for the garden club and similar clubs.

I appreciate and respect your point of view. I personally view this differently.

I’m a member of all those clubs, and I’ve been to both workshops and seminars and I have not always received coupons afterward. IMO it’s not any more of a “scam” to pay $2 for a coupon than it is to sign up for or attend a workshop with no other reason than getting a coupon. I think Home Depot couldn’t care less how I’m getting coupons as long as the story ends with me giving them money.
