Here is a set of directions on how to file the Disston Acme 120 saw, with zero set. I have not done it, yet. The guy who wrote this up is supposed the be the wizard. He politely turned down my request to sharpen mine. I think the hardest part is securing the special file, a safe cant back file.

Anyway, on reviewing my notes, he said he changed the directions, not to make them readable, but because they didn’t work as Disston quoted. Don’t know the details, the may be on this page, it’s been years (2010) since he wrote about it. Best of luck, if anyone tries it, please report back.

http://www.cianperez.com/Wood/WoodD..._pages/DarylWeir_SharpeningDisstonAcme120.htm

Not mine and I have no affiliation, but there are a handful of the files on eBay right now.

Search “Brite Rite File”. [sic]
The seller is out of Texas. They are safe on the two short sides and cut on the wide side. Disston “Bite Rite” 8” Cant files. Disstonian Institute mentions 6” files. I’ve watched it off&on, but never bought. I only own one No120 cabinet length; I hardly use it; it doesn’t need sharpening. As you said, you could make one from a regular cant file and a belt sander. (Check it isn’t ovulating, or you’ll just get a *******.)

But whatever you do, don't search Write Brite files.

Thanks, that was evading me.

No spare brain power for a fancy answer to the ******* right now.

This is truly an eggcellent discussion, gentlemen, and I tender a most profuse apology for returning us momentarily to our previously scheduled broadcast forthwith...

Doing a little catching up from last weekend but here goes.

I hit an estate sale and a handful of pawn shops in the region with mixed results. Although I've heard it reported here previously, this was my first experience with a pawnbroker who spent (literally) 15 minutes attempting to look up ebay prices for all 4 of the items I carried up to the register. After he quoted me 50-60 smakaroos for the Plomb DD14 (rope band), I knew we were in trouble. The 2 SR universals that he admitted he was unable to find any information on, he wanted $4 each (sorry, Don; I walked at that price), and the 1/2 - 9/16 Proto Pebble Size Field, he was unwilling to move off of his $10 ask. I freely admit that my internal Chief Boatswain's Mate tried to climb out and rip the young whippersnapper a new one... but I desisted, wished him good luck with his enterprise, and saw myself to the door.

Public Service Announcement: If ever you find yourself in Hamilton, MT, by all means, resist going tool scrounging at either of the local pawnshops. Judging by their prices and unwillingness to budge on same, they would rather hold onto inventory vs. move it along.

At any rate, I brushed the proverbial dust from my feet, and moved along to kinder tool scrounging climates which resulted in the following for a total outlay of $29:

Kennedy 16" Handcarry Box (for the Junior Staff)
Plvmb 1226 Pebble 13/16 Combo ($5 but in immaculate condition...)
Plvmb 5426 Hinge Handle
Plvmb WF-22 3/8 T-Handle
Plvmb 7434-H 1 1/16 x 1/2
Plvmb 5020 5/8 x 3/8 Deep
Plvmb 5024 3/4 x 3/8 Deep
Plvmb 5424 3/4 x 1/2 BC War Finish (this one is going in the set I'm working on for my younger daughter...)
Plvmb 5419 19/32 x 1/2 (same)
Plvmb 5270 3/8 Universal CB
Plvmb 4707
Plvmb 4708
Plvmb 4708-S
Plvmb 4710
Plvmb 4711
Plvmb 4711 Chrome CB
Plvmb 4712
Plvmb 4714
4 Oxwalls (for the Junior Staff)
SR 5/8 Deep (need this one Don?)
Proto 5332-H 1 x 1/2 Deep
Proto 5426 13/16 x 1/2
Proto 5425 25/32 x 1/2
Proto 5220 5/8 x 3/8
Proto LA 7420-H 5/8 x 1/2
Proto LA 5419 19/32 x 1/2
Proto LA 4712
SK 40970 1/4 Ratchet
SK 40964 14" 1/4 Extension (because everyone needs a 14 inch 1/4 extension:pimpflash)

All things considered, it was a great day to go for a drive, enjoy the sunshine, and look for rusty gold... just a boy, his dog, and his truck.

Best regards,
John

Well, I don't know about you fellows, but I took the time given to us by the great shutdown and went tool hunting!

The first stop turned up a few treasures; an old level marked P.T.&L. Co. Lic. 1928, a Stanley combo square, Stanley 720 chisel handle, and a small wood-handled driver. I really like the level, and it is nice that all of the bubbles are intact. I do wish it wasn't missing half the sight glass panels. I also picked this up at the sale

One of those little four drawer parts cabinets. I don't usually go for those, but this one was clean and the price was right. $15 for everything.

The second stop wasn't as good, although it was run by the same company. I like dealing with them as they tend to have very good prices on tools, though they are getting more expensive as they grow their business. Sad, but that seems to happen with estate sales companies.

An Unbreakco hex key wallet, Snap-on driver, Tiger pliers, and the lid to a needle file case full of the correct files. $4.50 for all of that. Oh, and in the first pic, there is a Snap-on Octogrip driver that I picked up at the restore the other day for fifty cents.

So glad GJ came back unharmed from the upgrade. It would have been like losing a family member!

One change I already don't like: apparently I can't quote another post from the Tapatalk app ...

I survived, lol...

Weird how a multi-hour shutdown freaks me out. After a day or two, it's strangely easier to accept the outage...

I went to a city-wide garage sale day last Saturday in a tiny town nearby. Not much there, although I did find three welding rod plastic cases and a spare front tire and wheel for my Ford 8N tractor for a total of $10.00. Several more sales were busts, and then while talking to the lady at the last sale, I asked if she had any tools? She said she did, but wasn't ready to sell them yet, but would when she sold the house and moved in a couple of months. After some thought, she said there were a few she would sell now, but we were interrupted by several groups of "lookers" before we could go look. I helped her get some Jeep cans open and checked out, pointing out that one was a WWII can (dated 1942) and that helped sell it for more that she expected. After things calmed down, she took me into the ramshackle garage that was now a garden shed.

The only tools she would sell were some 50's and 60's power tools, and the contents of what I called the "Rusty Bucket." I picked out what I thought I could rescue from the scrap man, and they are shown in photo #1:

P&C 2825 DOE 11/16 x 3/4
P&C DOE Tappet 2916 (originally 7/16 x 1/2, chopped to 9/16 x 5/8)
P&C 2728 combo, 7/8
Wards Master Quality DBE 3/8 x 7/16
Wards Master Quality DBE 3/4 x 25/32
Bonney Zenel 3031 DOE 25/32 x 7/8
Walden Worcester DOE 15/16 x 1-1/16 "Chrome Alloy"
Herbrand DOE 1-1/16 x 1-1/4

She did say that she was probably going to sell the Remline stack with the little men on the handles this summer. She was going to go through the contents first, but unless she had someone else who is after the tools, I doubt she will get organized enough to do that. I left her my contact information, not that that will help.

On the way home I stopped by a sale from the day before where the fellow had not dug out all his stuff yet. Of course, it had been picked over, but there were still some worthwhile items there, most at 25 cents each. Photo #2:

Bridgeport NONSKID NO.5 screwdriver
Barcalo short offset DBE 5/8 x 11/16
P&C 2222 DBE 5/8 x 11/16
P&C 2916 DOE Tappet (broken, marked with - instead of / for the fractions)
Vlchek DBE WBH 2022 5/8 x 11/16
Vlchek DBE WBO 1012 5/16 x 3/8
Apco Mossberg 1/2 dr. 5" extension
Mayhew cold chisel
File handle
Early (1942 patent, others pending) vise grips

Two abused P&C 2916's in one day!

Today I went to the second round of an estate sale in a nearby town. Not much left, but I did find a few items. Not shown is a fence post (T-post) puller in like-new condition. I got away for a little less than $20.00.

Picked up this Cornwell tool chest at yard sale couple weeks back.

Coincidentally, the owner last name was Cornwell, but not related to mfg.

Decided to just clean it up a bit, with still need to sort out a few slides on couple of the drawers.

Google translation of the above:

"Cool topic. I myself did not expect to see such a variety. It will be necessary to post photos of my findings from the flea market. Moreover, I saw here what I saw earlier but did not know where it came from."

Welcome, from Russia, I presume? It will be interesting to hear what the yard sale/boot sale/estate sale situation is like in your country. If you're able to post in English, you might get more engagement on your posts.

Looking forward to more postings!

Glad to see everything back online! I was going into serious withdrawls...

A couple goodies from last weekend. I picked up a little 'Driv-O-Socket set because it was made by GM Co. I see the older, 10 pc 1/4" set (for reference) fairly often, but this more modern looking set was new to me. I will also post it in the 1/4 inch thread, although technically the driver is actually hex.

And then.. I thought I would have some good Popular Mechanics 1942 Home Kinks **** to read while GJ was offline... but alas... it was only home repair tips. Also picked up Volume 1 of a 1938 Automotive Service guide.

My first finds of the new era. I picked up 2 proto sets and a 2 oz. Stanley ball pein this morning. I’ll post better pictures of the proto stuff in the appropriate thread once I sort it out. Let’s see if I can still post pictures...

Not only are you still here, but you're very popular, Outlaw! 36 brownie points! :devilish:

Everything is waaaay too big for me. It makes me feel very claustrophobic only being able to see such a small part of the forum at a time. At 100% I only see the first few forums in "The Garages" on the main page without having to scroll down. Once I'm in a forum, I only see maybe 3 or 4 of the active threads at a time, again, without having to scroll down. Lucky we only have one Sticky on the VB. With some of the forums, all you can see are the Stickies before you have to scroll down. And once I'm in a thread, I can only see one maybe two posts at a time. At 100% I wouldn't even see your post as I am replying to it. That is the strangest feeling for me, not being able to see the last 7 or 8 posts that are usually part of the conversation I am replying to. And even if you scroll, you can only see two or three more posts at a time before you have to scroll again to see 2 or 3 more posts. If anything, I think that is going to promote less meditative, less responsive, more instantaneous posts, and less continuity.

I have my browser set at 67% zoom to try to regain some of the lost view, but it makes the text pretty small.

I am going to give it a week or so to see if I can cope with it.

Pretty sure I don't like being able to click through photos of posts I haven't read yet. Who thought that was a good idea? Definitely don't like not being able to jump to the first post I haven't read--or to get rid of the double negatives, why can I not jump to the first unread post? If I've overlooked the obvious, please clue me in.

Old Radar: I haven't figured that out yet either, but what I have found is that once you post on a thread the next time you click on it in your WATCHED section it comes up with the that last post which might help you. if I find another profile setting or way to get it back to our old way i'll try to remember to let you know.

I haven't posted on the GJ thread for a while and even though i don't like all the price is right stuff I do and did enjoy the finds, the tools and all the information you all know so I'm going to see if I can participate again.

hope you all are enjoying learning this new format cause it's what we get to use now and it seems to have a lot of positives like the LIKE BUTTON FOR one.
