Jimminy Cricket! That is a haul, Jock. I thought you might be around, and I talked to another guy who said that people had been hauling off stuff all morning, and I was only there about a half-hour after it started. I will probably be swinging by there in an hour or so, see what is left.

The next sale was a dude, and to add insult to injury, my barber was not there! So, on the way home I stopped at a TOO and picked up an almost complete set of Hawkins electrical manuals, missing the #2, which only set me back a couple of bucks.
51301289853_4ef2f59fea_h.jpg
I have a complete set of those Hawkins manuals that I inherited from one of my favorite Aunts! They are cool.

Provincial: what a haul! The P&C big DBE collection alone is impressive! If you can, post them and the rest on the DBE it's gotten a little sleepy lately.

I picked up a free vintage ex-federal govt desk for my youngest, who is setting up residence in NY, but still monitoring the local "Need It Gone" Facebook groups. It's a solid oak desk made by Drexel Furniture out of North Carolina, and according to the retired Army PO, it used to belong to a Navy admiral! My son will probably put a fresh coat of paint on it, although I suggested stripping it down to its original wood finish.18799.jpeg20210710_094358.jpg

Nice desk. I wonder, how many of us have kids in NY? I know I do.

Maybe there should be a "children and widows of the Garage Journal Garage Sale thread" society.

Nice haul, c1504!

RTM--Thanks for the info, but I guess I don't understand the go-no-go in this sense. If whatever gap you are checking has a .002 tolerance and the appropriate feeler gauge gets in, is it good to go? What if the gap is wider than the appropriate gauge--how would you know unless you stepped up to the next size feeler? What type of things are we checking anyway?
I used one all the time for valve adjustments back in the ‘70s and ‘80s when valves needed adjusting frequently.

Provincial, I've been to working garages that had fewer wrenches!

BlueBomber--That desk would look top-notch stripped and refinished. Sand a big spot down to the wood and then give it to your son--just as an encouragement!

Picked these up from the ReStore this week. 1/4 RHFT ratchet for 2$ and the set for 16$. I've never seen this set with the half deep sockets and flex head stubby ratchet. Its complete minus a couple of driver bits
Every year during the holidays , Sears offered different variations of tool sets so someone had to buy something that wasn’t ordinarily offered.

I know one year I bought my father a set of 1/4 deep Craftsman sockets in a plastic sleeve. It included a teardrop ratchet and at least one extension. I knew he didn’t have any 1/4 deep sockets. I do remember him using using them on projects when I was there.

Things are perking up here a bit! and almost all tools! 4 of 6 stops paid off!

A Proto 1/2 to 3/4 adapter, and a Kastar feeler gauge marked both thou, and MM,
Second decent stop got thr large decorated Safety Pi, butterfly clip, and refer magnets for the ladies of the house.
next door had the vintage Tripod. that may become my camping Tripod.
1 Proto Kastar 2 mags clips 3 Tripod.jpg

Third Stop was both good adn annoying. Annoying as I left an Eiffel Flash pliers but priced at $20. so it stayed there. But I alos got:
The Hartford Clamp Co. Clamp, Armstrong DOE, Waldon Ignition wrench, Proto DBE, SO Metric Combo, SO 50th anaversary pocket driver, and the ratcheting driver with a US Patent

Fourth stop had the 2 SO drivers the top New Britain #3 PH, and the Matco hook (Witte made in Germany).
One of the SO drivers was crudely ground into a Square Robertson drive. Looking it up it was formerly an Awl/pick

Today's find. Does anyone have an idea of the age of this rusty goodness -- I would guess 1950s or 60s -- as it's Made in USA (Can't beat the price : FREE) ...

Went back to the last day of a sale and picked up the following for $7.50:

-- HPC Graphite Gun nearly full of graphite
-- Plomb 9782 Phillips Lic, Pat No. 2046837-40
-- Blue Point 5/8" Combo
-- Daraike screwdriver--According to The Valley Woodworker and the Progress is Fine, But it's Gone On Too Long websites, Daraike tools were distributed by an American named Damon Raike and his tools were made in Germany. Roughly 1910-1922. Tariff legislation (buy American) killed his business in 1922.
-- No-Name Jeweler's vise. 1.5" jaws. Screw is currently rusted fast until I get a new power supply for my e-tank.

Westline was a Western Auto brand, below Wizard I think. According to the USPTO Westline was first used in 1953, then they applied for the trademark in 1968, and it was registered the same year. Since there appears to be no circle R, it might be from the non registered time frame between 1953-68.

B7922395-89D1-47AC-8A7D-E773FFA428A8.jpegVarious things from a moving sale. The wooden rail in the last picture is what all the screwdrivers were on. They had much more early on in the day but dad wanted to go with me and we planned for 8am well I kept waiting and waiting and waiting so we missed the vise, toolbox and everything except what is pictured here because we didn’t make it till about 12 because he got out of bed about 10:30. Oh well. It was advertised on Craigslist so that’s how I found it. Tons of various tools and hardware in all those drawers.

Be very cautious with that tripod. I had one back in the 60s 70s, a second hand find back then.

The caution is the screw that holds the camera to the pod is VERY weak. I apparently over tightened mine, and as I stepped back for a Timer group shot, the camera fell. It was a cheap one, so no real harm, glad it wasn't my SLR.

I had four planned stops today, all of them ended up being good.

51303271798_bb3c549884_h.jpg
The first on the list was the tool estate sale Provincial and I both hit yesterday. I was pretty picked over by this point, but there were far fewer people around so I could take a good look. I found various socets (Blackhawk, Armstrong, Tru-test, Snap-on, Thorsen) for various sets I am working on, a book on model railroading, Plomb sliding t, and a as new in box Imperial Eastman swage set. I was very surprised that was there, but I am guessing people looked at the box and assumed it was something else. $10.

51303812824_da1be75063_h.jpg
Next stop was a "guy sale" and it lived up to the name. A contractor retiring, I found a Williams 1/4" socket set, Hazet DBE set 8mm to 19mm, and a Vaco nut driver set. $10 This is what was in the Williams box when I opened it:
51302208647_2968c34abe_h.jpg

51302359872_483c2271ac_h.jpg
After that was an estate sale that literally had 1400 pics of it online. It was day two so I expected it to be picked over, but I found a couple things. A Challenger socket box, Industro hex set (missing the L bar and the 1/2 socket) and some japaned rivets. $8. There were others things that I was interested in, but even at half-off, they were too expensive.

51303300418_05ae1a335f_h.jpg
Last stop was a very sick contractor selling off with the help of his family. Didn't find much as it was mostly contractor tools, but I did find a 1/4 Challenger ratchet, a Craftsman pick, and a partial set of locksmiths "tools". $3

Went to a tool hoarder sale today, the whole house was packed with stuff and the big basement was completely full of tools. I got there around opening and there was a line of about 20 with another 30+ people inside already. There were so many things to look at it was kind of overwhelming. I dug through for about an hour, left and then decided to go back after striking out at another "picker" sale. I wish I had taken some pictures, there was so much stuff at this place.

The estate sale company knew what everything was and a lot of it was too expensive for me, but there was literally so much stuff in this basement there's no way they had time to pick through all the boxes. Here are some of the highlights, if any of the specific tools are of interest let me know and I'll take individual pics.

Pic 1 - Proto ratchet wrenches, the rusty one is Snap on. The little box next to them I grabbed for the box itself and it had a few Plomb and Snap on randoms in there.

Pic 2 - An old box full of half junk and half good stuff along with some vice grips and some random hammers/mallets. The vice grips are all Peterson, the little ratchet I didn't see a mark on but looks similar to another Duro Chrome I have. The pliers are Channellock and Utica, the spinner is Plomb (got this at another sale today).

Pic 3 - Closer up look of the box in Pic 2, the big socket and extensions upper left are Snap on, the little driver with the orange handle is Plomb, mostly Craftsman sockets with some Williams/SK/Proto mixed in. Anyone know what the little bar with rounded ends on it is? It's stamped Snap on.

Pic 4 - I probably paid too much for this one, but I had to have the ratchets and I wanted the box too. Most of the other stuff is either unlabeled or Wright. I need to do a bit more work on what all this stuff is, it'll probably help to get it cleaned off.

If any of you PNW guys made it to the tool hoarder sale in Kenmore today, post up what you got! I know there was a ton of cool stuff in there that I never got to lay eyes on. I should have taken the time to grab some pics!

The Link wooden mallet is very nice. The third one down, is an embossing hammer, looks nice too!

I would have bought both of those too!

Slow day for me but I’ll still play. Had my grandson last night through mid day today and after that took my ********* out for a motorcycle ride and hit a few local sales. Figured they be cleaned out but didn’t care, nothing is more important than my grandson time. Managed to spend $2. Got a Proto Professional DOE, Proto 276 pliers, and Utica cannon plug pliers.
I swear I ought to start collecting this damn Proto stuff, seems thats all I can find around here.
Gonna try a flea market on the other side of town tomorrow.

Anyone wants to trade me Bonney stuff for all this Proto **** I have, please speak up. (Yes, I jest…sort of…well…maybe)

That’s some wrench haul Prov!

Some nice old socketry hauls tool! You guys are killing it lately.

Saukit - I‘m trying to see what your Snap On bar is but can’t really tell. Could it be a cross handle for a large breaker bar? may be if you post a couple pics here or in the Snap On thread.

Gidge- cool find on the Westline rack.

There were two pressed-steel socket sets at the Farm sale, with at least one double male u-joint, but no drive tools with them. The drive tools could have been scattered about the grounds. Both sets were in wood boxes with not lids.

They are out of my area of collecting, so I left them for others.

I only have a 3/4 ton pickup!

Here's a better pic of the little bar, given that it has a number on it I'm sure I can look it up. Didn't see that until I cleaned it off for the pic!

Edit: guess I can't look it up that easily, if anyone knows what it is would appreciate you letting me know!

Based on the finish of the part, it may be a tool, or part of a tool, that SO made for a military or other customer. I searched for PWA 2254, and it came up as a spark plug socket. The socket has no hole for a turning bar, so that was a dead end.

I still think that is a turning bar that may be used in a through hole of a socket. It is about the right diameter and length. Perhaps a turning bar for a wrench or extension or breaker bar.

I believe that the 2254 is a number related to the customer, rather than assigned by SO.

Found it! It is part of a tool for removing/replacing spark plug wiring on shielded ignition systems on aircraft. The main part of the tool is numbered 2454, and the handle is numbered 2254.

You guys are amazing, thanks for finding that! I gave up after 10 min or so of fruitless googling.

That being said if anyone needs this part to complete a tool let me know and I'll send it to you. Not really my thing and if it will complete the set for someone else I'm happy to pass it on.

Linfield College had a surplus giveaway in their Physics Dept. Over three floor of physics, electronics, instruments and assorted odd ball gizmos. It was all free. Here's some that I grabbed. The power supplies are really nice. One needs the pot replaced.

A free fluke 87 Dave? Very nice. OSU has a surplus shop open one morning and one evening every week during term, but it gets picked over pretty quickly.

How about posting that over on the vintage snap-on thread? Give a place others can find it in the future?

Also include Provicial's information. I copied the photo from his link (links die...)
