Well, you got that part right! Some would pay nearly $70 for the boxes and jack alone. We'll have to see what other goodies are left once he separates the chaff.
wish there were people like yourself around here.. cant sell boxes like that for 10 bucks!!

We braved smoke from multiple fires in the Tahoe basin to hit several garage sales. We got a late start and it seems that any tools that were available were gone by the time we arrived. We did bring home these four items. The hammer is Plumb and was missing some wedges. The screwdriver is Bridgeport and needs plenty of restoration. The end nippers are Crescent and look unused. The 1/4” nutdriver is Xcelite. 36453CD8-06FB-4AD7-AABA-C82DDF397EF7.jpegE48F275F-7A5C-4EF8-9744-C3C4EB33735D.jpeg1F2A68DA-F57D-40B1-B021-1F5EF216662A.jpeg

The first find was an old Union toolbox for $60. It's missing two ring pulls, the front cover and the lock but it's otherwise solid as a rock. Does anyone have a lead on where to get a couple ring pulls? These seem to be unobtainium.

P1090468.jpg
I’ve never seen those pulls in lots of looking at tool chest parts. Maybe if your timing is lucky at eBay.

I would suspect someone with jewelry experience and a dapping block might be able to give you a feasibility check.

I think those are more likely to be found looking at vintage furniture and cabinetry hardware.

I got out Friday and found some sales. At first I stayed in town, but by mid-morning I had gone to the nearby larger city to drop off bulldozer parts for repairs.

The first two sales were local, and didn't appear interesting at first. At the first one, I did find a set of Michael's scope covers, a 27/32 HSS Cleveland USA drill bit with a 1/2" shank, a USA HSS 1/2" drill bit, and a large Morse easy-out for a total of $3.00. At the second sale, I found a New Britain NS4916 1/2 dr. stud remover in excellent condition for $2.00.

After dropping off the parts, I swung by an estate sale and found the following for $19.00:
Proto-made 3/8" female drive spinner handle. No markings whatsoever, but a Proto knob on the back end.
Plomb 9804 screwdriver
A bushing splitter identical to some others I have that were made by Old Forge and which bears the same patent number: 2176626. This one has no maker's mark.
Barcalo water pump pliers
Hood cotter pin puller
Unmarked angle screwdriver
Schrader tire tread depth gauge
Davies 361 5/8 (across flats) Pry Bar with a special pointed end (flat on 4 sides)
First Three Sales.jpg
In the afternoon, I delivered a car battery I had picked up for a friend, and on the way, my wife mentioned that she had been to a sale nearby that morning that had some tools. It turned out to be one that I had tried to find last week, but was held in an alley in back of the house and out of sight of the street. I guess not many others had found it, since there were some good items left:
Fairmount open end Engineers wrench 1-1/2"
Caterpillar 5B786 DOE (fills a gap in my set) 1-1/16 x 1-1/8
KD Lock Ring tool, with extra bits in the container

Heck of a pull for $10 ! I would have paid more than that just for the plomb engineers wrench!

The first find was an old Union toolbox for $60. It's missing two ring pulls, the front cover and the lock but it's otherwise solid as a rock. Does anyone have a lead on where to get a couple ring pulls? These seem to be unobtainium. (I can make a cover and I have a lock already).
Unless I am misjudging what they look like, there may be a reproduction on the Gerstner site. Gerstner, Union, and maybe a few others bought most of their hardware from the same suppliers. If I'm wrong, and you can't find a match there, I would contact Ted at "The" Guide. He recently updated his website and left a post here to announce it. Should still be somewhere within the first 1 - 5 pages of the Vintage board.

Can you all give me some advice on how you find so many sales. My normal method is craigslist and estatesales.net I can never find any. Not sure if it’s my location or my methods.
Speed racer, CL / FB / estatesales.net / gsalr.com - but my real comment is - Are you in Kentucky? Go to the world's longest yardsale / 127 sale the first Thursday in August through Sunday. 690 miles of yard sales / fleas / vendors - I have seen some amazing vintage tools along that route. The tool specific vendors have the most amazing items and the highest prices, but there are a lot of gems mixed in the other vendors. It should be back to a reasonable level this year.

It's missing two ring pulls, the front cover and the lock but it's otherwise solid as a rock. Does anyone have a lead on where to get a couple ring pulls? These seem to be unobtainium.
Dave, search for "recessed ring pulls" you should be able to get at least close. I also think there are a couple groups on facebook that help locate replacement hardware for (mostly furniture) restorations, but I can't seem to find one right now. Given the patina on that one, I would just age something and let it be an obvious replacement. I would just try to make it look like someone replaced it in the 1950s. Either way, I would love to see when you are done with it. Please do a post later.

forgot to add... this weekend got me these two items. An odd little unmarked "bicycle wrench" with an odd nub, and a short Harrold "non-twist" screwdriver. I suspect there was more, but these were my fun finds, and I would really like to know more on the wrench, especially the purpose of the 'nub' on the end. It is similar to the nub on the end of Ford tractor wrenches.20210725_111512.jpg

Is it square? Did you measure it? It almost looks like it's meant for an opening, like a female drain plug or something. Neat find. I like the depression in the handle too.

1/4 inch square. I agree that it looks like the piece you see for drain plugs on other wrenches. I have looked it over carefully several times and still can find no markings, or indications that there ever were any.

I happened to drive by an estate sale today, so I stopped in. The person who had lived there apparently had the hobby of collecting old hand cranked, cast iron, post drills - there were about eight of them there, along with a couple ancient power hacksaws, but they were horribly overpriced. I did buy one thing, a Starrett #98 18" machinist's level for $30.00. It has some surface rust on the base that will need to be cleaned up, but otherwise appears to be in good condition. Starrett still sells this model, new ones in a wood case go for $532.00.

well - I tracked the unusual bicycle wrench with the odd tang, or "rectangular extension" to design patent 29520 issued Oct 18, 1898 to Charles H. Metz. It is a design patent for the bicycle wrench frame but does not explicitly call out the purpose of the "rectangular extension"
https://pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?PageNum=0&idkey=NONE&SectionNum=3&HomeUrl=&docid=D002952

Metz is far more famous as a prolific inventor of cars, bicycles, and motorcycles and as the founder of the Metz car company

here is a picture from datamp showing an example with the patent marked. Knowing the area to look, I still can find no indication of any previous markings. I am also still curious about the actual maker. But, it seems fairly rare, and I wonder how these things ever turn up in a local flea market.

Saturday was the Great Oregon Steam Up, which is a celebration of all things steam-powered, along with displays of tractors and stationary engines and all of that sort of thing. And along with this is a swap meet! So, of course, I went.

I picked up a lot of paper:
51334180237_59b4c4ecd8_h.jpg
Books on shooting, sailing and tool use, mostly from the fifties.

I didn't buy much in the way of tools, seeing as I have pretty much what I need for personal use, and the number of vendors was down this year, which is hardly surprising.

51335924200_a737b1ccd6_h.jpg
A Crome Alloy (SK) socket set, various drivers, and a Yankee tools box. And that is what I am most excited about.
51334193422_5d0e2233a6_h.jpg
It's missing some of the interior oak parts, but I should be able to recreate them pretty easily, but the sticker and the inside label are in great shape, and one of the three tools that should come with it are there. I have one of the other pieces, and all of the bits so this should go pretty quickly.

bmw, that Yankee tool set box is outstanding! the North Brothers tools come along fairly often, but the boxes never seem to be with them. Thee outside label/logo is a work of art, and that inside label is in awesome shape.

Local garage sale today, the total was $22. Not shown is a Starrett height gage adapter.

The picture I uploaded is 850kB, which I think is just too large, I don't want to be a bandwidth hog. It was already compressed from 3 Meg, but I can't seem to compress it further - any tips?

Today I decided to go back out for a bit, as I wanted to check out a couple of unrelated things, and I managed to find a few decent-looking sales in the general area. Well, most of them were a bust, there were tools alright, but nothing I was interested in. One stop had a few things that piqued my interest though:
51335930325_f017856991_h.jpg
A full vintage box of blued tacks, which are really handy for furniture restoration (a huge part of what I do these days), and an SK spinner, which I don't really need other than I find a million SK 1/4 socket sets and they sell well on the auction site. And I was almost out the door when in the corner of my eye a spot an old box containing tire chains (which I do not need) but the box looked a bit different. On closer inspection, I realized it was a Toyota Landcruiser toolbox from the sixties. So, I bought all of that for a whopping 8 bucks, threw the chains in the free pile, and when on about my day!

The next few stops had nothing of real interest, although I did see and try to haggle for a long c table saw. But I didn't feel like paying his price or even close to it, and we couldn't meet in the middle, so I left that behind mostly thinking I already have a table saw. Heading home now, I spotted a sign for a TOO, thinking it was one I was on the fence about. Boy was I wrong. It was a clearout in an industrial mall, with just tons of junk. And they wanted to make deals to get it out of there. So, digging through the tools, I found the following:
51335147468_ee7cee5b1d_h.jpg
Three Proto body hammers, one of which has a Snap-on handle, a Victor rosebud tip, and a Snap-on 1/4" flex head, TM831. They aren't in the best of condition but should clean up nicely. All of that was $10

Made it out to some sales this weekend, spent quite a bit of time driving around Saturday and it seemed like for the most part I was a step behind the resellers. I did get lucky with a few picks here and there...

Pics 1-4 came out of an old workshop, it was pretty picked over by the time I got there but I managed to grab a few interesting items.
  1. Wrenches (starting from the left), an old Vlcheck with a "custom" handle, Thorsen, Blackhawk, Plomb, Craftsman, and a few other odds and ends. Pliers are Snap on, Diamalloy, Lindstrom (Sweden), the last I'm not sure of, can't find a stamp.
  2. Anyone know what these are?
  3. Was pretty happy when I pulled these Snap on pliers out of the evaporust and scrubbed them off...they were completely rusted which is why no one else had grabbed them. They work just fine, the hinge was not corroded at all.
  4. A Thorsen 3/8 ratchet and a "Companion" branded ratchet that is identical to the Thorsen. Ignore the flex head, it's from a different sale.
  5. This is the one sale where I got there first. SK 40170, this thing is a beast. Also another Proto 5449, along with a 3/8 Williams superratchet and breaker bar. 1/4" spinner is Proto.
  6. Finally, a little SK set with a few random foreign sockets. It was only $5 though so I was happy.

A couple more things from the weekend...

Pics 1&2 are a little Plomb 1/4 inch set with a Penens ratchet. Asked the guy how much and he said "a buck"! Couldn't get my wallet out of my pocket fast enough!

Pic 3 is a gigantic metric wrench set that is a combination of Proto and Challenger marked wrenches. They go all the way up to 32mm! I need to do a little more research on these, it's strange that the Proto/Challenger wrenches are pretty much every other size.

Pic 4 is a number of other wrenches and some miscellaneous sockets that I got from the same sale as the wrench set. Mostly Craftsman with random Snap on, Williams, Tru Fit in there as well. Sockets were Snap on, SK, Craftsman BE

Pic 5 was another random garage sale that I didn't have high expectations for, I was digging through some sockets and another guy says "I wish there was some Snap on in here". Right about that moment I found the little 3/8 socket it the pic, handed to him and said "here you go". He put it down and says "yeah but it's not a whole set!". I took it back...also found another one:) There's a also a Proto ball peen, and the spinners are Plomb and Indestro.

Last pic nothing special, just a couple random Craftsman sockets, a Mac punch, and a General Hardware auto punch. I got the sockets an an estate sale that was on the last couple hours and they announced "everything in the house goes for a buck!". There was a pretty nice looking old outboard down in the basement and I seriously contemplated hauling it out of there. I don't have space for it though, hopefully it doesn't end up in the scrap heap.

Today I decided to go back out for a bit, as I wanted to check out a couple of unrelated things, and I managed to find a few decent-looking sales in the general area. Well, most of them were a bust, there were tools alright, but nothing I was interested in. One stop had a few things that piqued my interest though:

Three Proto body hammers, one of which has a Snap-on handle, a Victor rosebud tip, and a Snap-on 1/4" flex head, TM831. They aren't in the best of condition but should clean up nicely. All of that was $10
Holy smokes, you cleaned up at this t.o.o! That landcruiser box should probably do well on ebay! heck of a find at the last stop! Is the middle proto hammer a spare for you?

Got this one for free from the side of the road prior to garbage day. Metal handle is an interesting touch.
