Got this one for free from the side of the road prior to garbage day. Metal handle is an interesting touch.
Union Toolbox.JPG
What are the dimensions of that Union box?
I have a 7-5/8x21-1/4 Bonney-branded one, missing the tray. Oddly, I don’t find my Bonney in catalogs of the era.
C4078F0A-D4D2-44F4-9E61-C1394A596832.jpegI see similar Union boxes occasionally, but not the length of the Bonney. Trying to maintain hope I will spot the right tray one day.

Here’s a similar Union I saw somewhere but didn’t buy.
The handle on that Union was brown. I wonder how many colors they came in?
A6B20C78-A5D1-4D47-99EC-511AF0ADEB44.jpegNote the rectangular depression where the label is, under the handle.
5479E36B-05FC-407B-BE39-1E37CA543DAF.jpeg“Bonney” is actually formed there on mine, plus the addition of the under-lid clip. The Bonney handle is of a different shape, as well.

Both saukit and bmwrd0 get *****. Nice picking!
+1!

saukit, the head of those pliers in your #2 pic has something of the look of German imports to my eye, though the handles, Button’s cutters and the toothed pipe-gripping section seem American enough…really, no marks, eh? Can you post a pic of the other face?

Though we run our propane grill a couple times a week year round, I've never tried operating a smoker. It's always been on the "when I find the right deal" list and I've been thinking about building one myself for years.

Well, turns out I'm going to have to combine those two ideas, because this ridiculous monstrosity dropped into my lap this weekend.

20210725_202216.jpg

That's right, it's a big ol' water tank and a wood stove strapped to a homemade trailer. The previous owner (a retired millwright / pipe fitter) started the project but decided to sell his house in our current crazy market and move into a condo. I found it on an estate auction website and just had to put in a bid.

$11.50 later and she was all mine!

Now all I need to do is cut the cook chamber and firebox, fit them together, cut a door, fabricate the innards, add a smoke stack, grind all my terrible welds, grind my welds some more, grind until it kind of looks like I should be allowed in the same room as a welder, and paint. I might be ready to cook sometime in the early 2030s!

No marks at all that I can find…

@LesserSon Is that the original paint on your Bonney box? If so, that's very impressive.

Mike
Sadly, no - though I think a good bit of the original crinkle red is hiding in places. It had been heavily brush-painted black as found. I stripped enough off to find the interior decal, and could just see a bit of the red inside the clasps, where a brush couldn’t reach. Weighing the prospect of damaging the decal and possibly finding a lot of bare steel under the black, I opted to spray it. My only real regret is choosing Regal Red instead of Sunrise Red.

I promised my auction site haul when I got it since I wasn’t able to hit any sales last weekend. I won’t list everything but will cover a few items. Some metric ball end allens in the first picture, and a brass hose nozzle. Random nut drivers, Excelite, Vaco, Alltrade, etc in 2nd pic. Full set of Lowell ratcheting wrenches SAE, (never heard of them) and another Proto adjustable.
ProAmerica ratchet, JS USA ratchet, breaker, extension, and 2 SK extensions in 4th pic. Set of JS USA (never heard of them either) sockets with an appearance by Thorsen, Craftsman, KAL, and Proto.
And the reason I bought the lot, a mixed set of metric Bonney wrenches. I’d have been happy with just them, the rest is icing.

I paid a ridiculously low price for all of it and can’t believe nobody else bid on it seriously.

Congradulations... I think.
Reminds me of Slim Pickins riding something like that:

I have 2 of those union supersteel boxes, one of which is my first ever toolbox. Both blue, but I have some earlier smaller boxes that are green.

I bought these rifle scopes at a local yard sale. Paid $5 each. These’s a Redfield, a Burris, a Leupold, a Simmons, and a Bushnell.
I already sold the Burris on eBay for $200. The Leupold is up to $177 on a 5 day auction and the Redfield is at $80.

Hello all its been a while since I checked in, the app on my phone seems to have issues and will only crash now. I didn't make it through all the pages I missed but you all sure keep finding those 'you ****' deals!

Here are my entries from the past few weeks. Got a cheap Fly rod for $1 at a sale a few weeks ago. And last week I saw this valve at a sale, there was no one outside when I got there, but I had to try and get the valve so I poked around until the lady came out of the house. She said the valve and some other assortment of stuff was free, I then made a pile of other items and she wanted to get rid of for $5. Ill use the various tubes of silicone and grease, a small 2 jaw puller and a hole cutter, and some crescent brand snips from the jamestown ny plant, helicoil set is huge and i probably wont ever need to use it, but it seems that when ever one is needed they are hard to scare up.

I am fairly certain that the valve is from a 50s vintage gas compressor. For comparison here are the connecting rod and piston I saw when visiting in 2018ish. They seem to be about the same scale. Valve has 11 punch dots on the face that would indicate it has been out 11 times for rebuilding.

Sorry, LesserSon, missed your original post
I just measured it - Approximately 19 1/4 long, 7 1/4 tall and 7 " wide ( +/- as I was measuring it in the dark garage)
It does not have a tray - will try to post better pictures in the future once I get to cleaning it (way behind on cleaning....)

Thanks! Amazing how often trays get separated, and then they are essentially anonymous. I should carry cardboard footprint cutouts of the ones I need, because I forget a tape measure, or where I wrote the dimensions, or both!

I think I should do the same. I recently noticed that if I tend to forget something, it's better to write it down and make a picture on the phone - this way at least we have it...
May be we should start a thread which should be locked at the top for extra trays and tool box drawers - we all have extras and also missing a lot ...

100%...

When I remember to be smart, I'll send myself an email (with info like tractor and engine model numbers, etc.). Sort of a modern take on keeping that on a list in your pocket. That way, all you need to do is (find and) open the email on your phone...

Just send yourself an email with "Toolbox Trays" in the subject, and add/delete stuff as your needs change.

Or keep a document on your smartphone that lists all you have, and all you need or want. If you do a google sheet, it can sync between phone and desktop, and google will feed you better advertising.

I have one for all my Woodworking tools, and another for mechanics tools. Has kept me from buying a few duplicates.

I wanted to give that a thumbs-up, until you reminded me about the advertising...

You can load excel files directly on your phone, but then you loose the convenience of the sync’d files.

I do all my old tool Googling on Chrome, and store the results on Google sheets. Makes it very clear what I want them to send me advertising for. When I’m searching for non tool things, I do it incognito mode. (And yes, being a smart@$$ thru all of this)

I made another visit to the hoarder's stash that I posted a couple of times previously. Still trying to get him to sell me a tall 2x12 drawer cabinet, so a bit of sucking up, not haggling, etc going on. This time I scored a pair of Pony #53 double pipe clamps, not sure how useful they will be, the mfg suggested panel glue ups between the pipes, about 5' long, a rusty warranted superior 14" backsaw with nifty handle, but 2 broken split nuts, a Veritas shelf drilling jig that seems to only be missing the bushing inserter & a scraper holder (not a combo tool!), a wood tap 1"-6tpi?, a couple of partial boxes of 1/2"-13 coupling nuts and plated acorn nuts, a doweling plate, leather swivel knife, and a shaft converter to turn a D motor shaft into a grinder arbor. Not great, but greasing the skids with the guy.

I have a pad of paper.
As do I! I have my plomb, proto la and p&c inventoried and refer to them from time to time when needed! If the items are cheap enough, I don't pull the lists out , or I don't pull them out if I want to alert the seller to the fact that they have something I need to fill a hole.

In reality, I buy everything I like and think is a good deal, and dump the duplicates on Smokeshow!

Just kidding. I usually end up needing everything in the end. Why, no, I am not a hoarder. Why do you ask?

VERY nifty handle on that WS backsaw, RTM!

A2699A40-647C-4AD4-8CF9-8D5A7BC067F8.jpegSpent $28 at Leesport flea this morning brought home a heavy cast iron 3-wheel rolling base (minus a wheel),5FF95889-B8B5-4307-B7C8-8CFDA1BDE14F.jpeg
Craftsman crowntop box (w tray), 4 Bethlehem Steel carriage bolts,E9C2D0E3-A6DF-481B-9ED3-DCEC0B6BCFBC.jpeg 2 Yankee slot bits, a bitbrace slot bit, 2 nailsets (one marked Bridgeport), mummified Bell System Utica chain-nose, Harrold slipjoints, Winchester -Special- screwdriver, K-D 3/8dr impact driver (I thought I had a 1/2dr Porter-Cable…nope another 3/8dr); Bonney 27F DOE wrench, No1246 1-7/16 waterpump wrench reground to 1-9/16, No2 pipewrench, PH20 softface hammer; Herbrand 18x19mm DOE; set of drillstops.

Somehow, I walked away from a Bonney Triangle-era 3/8dr ratchet, then could not relocate the vendor (nor the ratchet) when I changed my mind. Oh well. Also left behind a Blackhawk ballpein with a trashed handle, a frozen Blackhawk 1/4dr ratchet, and a Wright 3/8dr ratchet with tootsie-roll handle - smooth action. One of the hinderances blocking better judgement was picking up the cast base early, then not taking it back to the car immediately.

Thanks. I’ve had a couple of buddies suggesting it looks like a Richardson Bros saw. Did some poking into my reference books, and it looks a lot like the ca. 1867 pictured in photo 8 on page 13 of this PDF.

The blade is straight, the back is steel, and it’s definitely a Warranted Superior medallion with an Eagle on it.

Quite pleased, as I left it in my previous visits to this guy, figured it was too rusty to fight with, 2 busted bolts, etc, and was thinking I could just salvage the handle. Now I think an attempt at a total restore is going to be attempted first, before I replace the plate.

Wow, My head is sort of spinning - I didn't get any alerts for 3 days (and was head down at work...) and missed three pages of WOW!

It works out well for me :) And besides it's not hoarding if your stuff is cool! In terms of the duplicates, I am the same way. If it's cheap enough I just buy them and then save the best one and put the other in the duplicates box.

Don't use the "H" word. I consider the term "hoarder" to be a minimalist's epithet for normal people, They have no life, no interests, no books, no memorabilia, so no history, they live in a sterile environment. Yes I'm offended when that term is casually used..
