A few more finds from last weekend...

Herbrand wrench set (are these ignition wrenches?), Proto pliers, SK 1/2 inch combo, Sears branded DOE, random body hammer which is has a partial stamp on the handle but all I can make out is "USA". Got this for a buck at a garage sale.

IMG_3108.jpg

Next up is a couple things I brought back from a swap meet hosted by our local woodworking store. There were a lot of cool planes, chisels, timber slicks, axes, etc. but I was mostly just looking for non woodworking stuff. Picked up an old Blackhawk 49977 (1945 if I am interpreting date code correctly) and an SK set without the ratchet. Luckily I just picked up a little 1/4 inch SK ratchet the day before so I now have the complete 1/4 inch set (I think, not sure if there should be another piece in this one).

I wouldn't classify those as ignition wrenches. (you are all the way up to 3/4")
Thanks, I thought that because of the head angle maybe these were made for a specific application. Maybe just a design choice though.

Herbrand is rather famous for the head angle of their combo wrenches. Most manufacturers use a 15* angle, while Herbrand uses a 22-1/2*.

Thanks for the info, I learn something new every time I post here and it's greatly appreciated!

Hitting the Thursday garage sales, I did not have as much luck as I thought I would today.

It was supposed to be a moving sale, and I have my doubts about that, I found a very nice Stanley No. 0 level with great markings:
51373854217_58d64c6ba8_h.jpg
Both a Sweetheart and the original decal. And the price made me think that it wasn't a moving sale, as they were asking antique store prices. Oh well, I bought it anyway. No way I was going to pass it up.

After that, I hit a few more sales where I saw a lot of rusty ****. But I did manage to pick up a couple of books:
51375617190_6fff0f5c82_h.jpg
The two Railway Car Lighting books are actually textbooks for railroad workers published in 1927, while the Boy Mechanic is a compilation of all the projects for young craftsmen published in Popular Mechanics up through the mid-fifties.

When is the copyright on your Boy Mechanic? I have one with a yellow dust jacket, curious if they made more than one edition.

Two sales today. The first promised a boat load of tools but welched on the deal--a Craftsman stack that was pictured in the ad was nowhere to be seen at the opening. I was able to pick up the rustiest CM toolbox I've ever seen that didn't actually have holes in it. They were asking $25 for it including the tools. After I culled about four pounds of scrap metal, **** and a couple of big rusty wrenches from overseas out of it I said I'd give $25 if the breaker bar and ratchet (Snap-on & Plomb) were included instead of the detritus. The deal was made. It took me about four hours to clean all the caked-on grease from all the tools. Before and after pictures follow.

12 Aug 21-1.jpg 12 Aug 21-1a.jpg 12 Aug 21-1b.jpg

12 Aug 21-2a.jpg 12 Aug 21-2b.jpg

- Snap-on NS-15 ('44 E code) & two sockets
- Plomb 5449 Rat ('41), 1130 DBE (AC) WF-35 Ext & Four sockets
- Two each sockets from Challenger, Proto Mfd., and Bonney
- Duro Chrome 1440H 1-1/4 Deep, 1991 punch and DI 1225 25/32 socket
- Two S-K Sockets
- New Britain punch and two sockets
- Craftsman Long C (full underline) DBE (CI), 1729 DOE (CI) and 5" Ext (BE)(CAD)
- Four Craftsman Long C sockets (BE), three =v= sockets & universal
- =Craftsman= DOE without any code & a CM Allen wrench -v-
- Two UNBRAKO 1/2" Hex Rods -- Need help with this one -- was it an extension?
- VLCHEK WBH 2628 DBE, Herbrand 6823 Flex Box, P+C Deep, Mossberg 5" Ext & Cornwell 3/4 socket
- Mechanics Tool & Forge Screwdriver and four files

The second sale also promised "a ton of hand tools" but most were late-model Craftsman so I only came away with:

- Proto 9500 Screw Extractor Set I was too tired to clean
- Pair of Mueller Electrical Clip for my E-tank (if I ever find another power supply)
- Pair of bolts that turned out to be the perfect length, but too thick for my vise
- Pack of sturdy needles
$4 total.

I rarely post pictures of my eBay finds but I’m going to make an exception. This Powr-Kraft 1/4” drive set was listed on eBay by our thread host. He made me an extremely reasonable offer which I immediately accepted 9925A8AA-A5EC-4965-B410-9D7128321B37.jpeg99756DE7-CA96-425E-825E-E1F0C9C2E140.jpeg71B6B8EC-4CA4-4B22-A7CF-57A49CAE2320.jpeg8B30F632-4D68-4F49-8B2F-AE6A91E809E5.jpegWhen the set arrived it was accompanied by some other special items he had set aside for me. Thanks!

I had been throwing my unintentionally acquired tools from the far East in a cardboard box. It’s difficult for me to throw tools in the garbage can so after gathering quite a load I visited a local thrift store this morning.A0D45582-B27E-40AD-898B-FF0C61E9178B.jpegI traded the Chineseium and Taiwanium for these vintage US made tools. The line of sockets at the bottom of the picture are all Craftsman.

A lot of good stuff there, Don. I have to admit, I was surprised and happy to see your name pop up in my in-box re that set. I am very glad it went to a good home. Plus it allowed me to stuff the box, so to speak, with some things I had set aside for you.

Quick flea trip this morning (Lugz 2021_46) yielded a pair of 1920's era K-D flat head valve lifters (both dupes to a third I already own, but each with distinctive marking variations), another Whale Tool Corp Pli-Rench (this variant had a different swiveling jaw mechanism), and wartime No. 410 Channellocks that will force me to re-organize the Champion DeArment display in the Lugzsonian.

It's been awhile in this neck of the woods since there were any estate sales worth the effort. A nearby sale offered some woodworking tools. The consumables set me back $2. Worth 8" drawknife, 3-pc set of Irwin perfect handle (?) screwdrivers, 4-pc set of Footprint (made in Eng) cabinet screwdrivers and the Radi-plane. Nice to get out again.

Your body hammer is a craftsman. I believe it is early heritage era based on the blue and the handle type! Nice grab

I forgot my LEFT-BEHIND

Guy wanted $50 for this 1943 dated M-1910 Intrenching Tool. These T-handle types, a carryover from WWI and Interwar favored by the Marines, are a little rarer than the folding types. When I said, politely, that was a little steep, and offered $35, Mutt looks at his partner Jeff, and breaks out his phone to show me one on eBay for $60. When I reminded him, politely, that we weren't on eBay, and that his was in poor condition, pointing out the heavy corrosion, deterioration, and discoloration, Mutt and Jeff break into the "patina" routine. Which is when I, much less politely, reminded Mutt that he wouldn't even let me take the sheath off for fear of it falling apart, and I asked him when was the last time he saw rust in the Smithsonian? When they started laughing and saying inane things to piss me off and make each other feel better ("This thing will be here longer than you," etc), I wished them good luck and put them on my boycott list.

I would have left it behind too. I think that I paid $15.00 for one in really good condition at a sale in El Cerrito, CA.

The haul was heavy on the US made Craftsman but there were some brands that I collect as well.

On the way to the hardware store, I passed a couple of sales (OK, I took the long way)
51376622068_e16e002e55_h.jpg
A Huskey socket with a decent but not great label full of Indestro sockets, a set of Starrett drive pin punches, Starrett outside calipers, and a small book of Maugham short stories. I think I paid $15 for all of that.

Weird, mine also has the last date as 1952, but it says "New and Revised Edition".
I've got two examples of the Boy Mechanic. Book 4 from 1925 and book 1 from 1945. Not sure how their numbering system worked...

OK BMW *****, Again.. and the pin punch set is complete! I don't recall seeing any complete sets!

Interesting, Min has a large center hole I figured for a center punch.. Dang even the finish looks good from what shows.

The pin punch set wasn't complete, there was a P&C in place of one of them. I happened to have the correct one in my spares, forgot to mention that. And, yes, the finish on the box is excellent, much better than any of the other ones I have.

Not sure where you are seeing that, and my doesn't list anything like a book number. A guess would be that they are part of a series that you could purchase as a set. But I have to say I dig that one from '25 and would love to get my hands on a copy.

Thanks Smokeshow! I was tempted to start sanding on that one in an attempt to figure out what it was but it just didn't feel right. The hammer looks pretty original to my uneducated eyes.

Lost a whole day of my life today. Here's the highly abbreviated story. On my way to a sale in the next town, I experienced a sphincter-tightening episode of engine coolant gushing over the windshield. Fifteen seconds later I was stopped on a side street with the engine off.
Three hours later the tow truck finally shows up to take me to a national service chain where they tell me it'll be an hour until they can look for the problem by pressure testing the coolant system.
Three hours later they say the pressure test looks good so it must be the radiator cap. ETA 45 minutes for a new cap, flush and refill and I'll still be able to get to the sale.
Two hours later (it's now 5pm--sale is over) they take me into the shop to show me the coolant leaking out of the radiator. It's unlikely they will be able to replace the radiator until next Tuesday, so they offer to tow it back to San Antonio to one of their other shops that is closer to home and might get to it quicker. Although I readily agree, I cringe at the thought of using the same chain (starts with an F).
Called the wife and waited for over an hour for her to get through rush hour traffic to pick me up. Going to bed.

How the Eff do they "do a pressure test" and claim the cap let loose? These guys are stroking you - get it out if there and to your regular mechanic, or home if you feel up to replacing. (if its even the rad what you describe is usually a hose letting loose...

Have them confirm the cooling fans are working. I have seen more than 1 vehicle with a busted radiator that was caused by a inoperative cooling fans.

I‘ve been doing really well lately passing up stuff I don’t need, but I couldn’t pass up this deal for 6 bucks. Craftsman box full of stuff. 1st picture is everything, 2nd is the craftsman sockets, 3rd is misc. stuff including 2 nice perfect handle screwdrivers, 4th are the craftsman wrenches in a nice roll up, and the 5th is the sockets broke down into sets. Lots of metric stuff. Oh, and I found a unicorn in the bottom of one of the pouches… more on that in the plomb thread.
