Picked these up at a handful of sales this morning; some large Proto metric hex sockets, 13/16 Snap-on wrench and a stubby #2 Phillips, mini stream light, Milwaukee Fuel impact driver, dual charger, M18 Blower, M12 LED light and 2 M12 batteries. Also a Facom 1/2dr extension, couple of small screwdrivers, oddball led light and an Interstate Battery sign 3’ x 2’.

Nice finds Guys! OR check with Shiftless, on the Vise thread - Hes been sort of specializing on the exposed screw vises.

Not a bad day a little quiet.

First two pics were from Stop one, and could have been better if I'd known he switched his once a year 2 day sale to Fri-Sat instead of Sat-Sun! So these were day two pickings.

Most of this was from the dollar table. I know the Valve/generator is from a Coleman Stove, I'l need to research which one... Gun racks, PA Tobacco can, A really short Stubby, a Small scoop I'll probably use a a "Dust pan" for box cleanup, a clamp, adn a BP head for one of thos brass nesting sets. BP heads are pretty rare for thos and I have partials...

YS1 PA racks CM V&G, BP head, Stubby clsmp, scoup.jpg

A No. 3 6" CI fry pan -It'll be some work to ID he maker - Thin casting adn well made so I know its a nice one. and a small whip (costume item)

YS1 F pan Whip.jpg

from Several stops: 7 NOS brass 1/4" valves, an Aladdin Lamp Font made in USA, the small dolly may be the pick of the day if the Valves are not, cents 50!!, 2 bucks at a TOO for the Brass stock, (flat and tube) brass screen, and the Xacto saw and miter box.

- I missed out by maybe 10 min on this last stop though, a guy was loading a Unimat lathe, and I asked and he got it for 30 bucks!

Looking good there fellas!

Flyer- nice piece of local history!

Lugz- could have used a chair today myself. I spent quite a while at this one booth which was a tool dealer’s inventory that changed hands and spaces. I get along well with the new owner, who I’ve known, while the last guy came in as a jerk selling tools and probably left as just a jerk seeing as how his tools are no longer his!

The TL-13 (or TL-13A) linesman pliers?
Close! You DF'ed them accurately, but your ID was off. :) Those are actually Neverslip's. Made in the 1920's right here in NJ. I have three 8" versions. The cutting blades are replaceable. I have never seen any other sizes and didn't even know they made them this small! They're in rough shape. Soaking now. I hope I can save them. To give you an idea of this load, this is the third time I have gone through these milk crates and didn't spot these before. They were really buried and today was the first day I really went through item by item in each crate.

That sounds promising. I've been much more "sociable" than I normally am when I am out. It used to be all business, scan, parse, move on, repeat, in and out, sort of a solo rogue hunter, not much chit chat. I don't know if it's old age or I'm just getting soft. :)

Got out early this morning. In all, made 5 stops. Flea market, pawn shop, pawn shop, yard sale, flea market! The two fleas yielded some decent finds, while the pawn employee who knows me offered a bargain price on a few nice name brand tools he was sick of listing on ebay!

I haven’t had the time to get through all of it yet. The most interesting finds came at the second flea.

Here are the early morning flea finds. A small but worthy haul.

Easco 6pc metric wrench set with one extra, Snap On 3/8 ratchet, S-K and Kraeuter spinners. Cornwell deep and S-K tamper proof sockets.

Check Those Cheap Tins! The F936 ratchet was a lucky find. There was a blue cheap import socket set on the ground. Opened it up as I usually do, to a mess of no name taiwan sockets, no name 1/4 ratchet and this Snappy. I asked the couple selling how much. They know me from past deals. Wife says $10 for all. I ask how much for this ratchet alone and she didn’t want to separate but husband says $3. SOLD! I would have paid the 10 but sure got off easy on the deal. I don’t want or need another blue tin set kicking around. I guess I didn’t need another ratchet either but I rarely find nice Snappy rats in the wild.

I think you have two old prank phone calls mixed up. Do you have Prince Albert in a can? You better let him out. And Is your refrigerator running? You better go catch it.

Part 1 of the second flea. As far as I can get for now.

First pic is a merger of the spinners found today for an S-K trio of sorts! Sometimes I can resist those green S-K but today It went S-K, Kraeuter, S-K Wayne. Later, spotted a second Wayne but it was rather shot.

The S-K Wayne, Old Forge scraper, Bonney single ender, Blue Point, Vlcheck, and a couple countersink bits.

No, it was my bad influence friend John's older brother who led us down that path...

Anyway, I had a nice plan of attack on the days' sales, when my last-minute check of Craigslist showed me one in a small town outside my normal loop that had an interesting sale... Sadly, it started yesterday, but I was able to make the trip worthwhile:
51393173256_5c472a589f_h.jpg
Chassis punch, vintage casement window hold-open in original envelope, Husky single offset, and a Proto LA ignition roll with a set of Craftsman ignition wrenches! And although I seemed to have missed a bit, that made my day. $2.

51392394027_6d412815ac_h.jpg
Although I didn't realize it, the second stop had a lot of really good vintage books, so I picked up a first of Zorba the Greek 1952, Tolstoi's Resurrection from 1899, and a wonderful travel book about a caravan from Bombay to Constantinople that was published in 1890. I also pick up this from the tools in the back shed:
51393426418_050f554352_h.jpg
That is an original Stanley A5, one of the short-lived aluminum planes they made. A Sweetheart, all original made from '25 to 35'. $14 for everything.

51393442478_dfd627d64f_h.jpg
I have combined the 3rd and 4th stops as they both looked better in the ad than in real life. But I did manage to find a couple of things. From the 3rd, an almost complete set of General jewelers drivers, a tin of SuperDomes in .177, and a Herbrand socket (not pictured). $2. The fourth stop yielded the Stanley #4, and while I am not exactly sure of the age as it is missing the lateral adjustment lever, it is from sometime before 1899. $5 for that old girl. The fifth stop was a waste of time, so that is all I will say about that!

Six stop wasn't there, probably due to rain, but the sixth stop, which came after a lunch break at a local brewery was only last due to being another 10 am start, which I kvetched about yesterday. So, many of the good tools that were in the pics were gone, which probably isn't too bad as everything was priced pretty high. I did manage to pick up some more paper, but they were asking used bookstore prices(!) and I ended putting some back.
51393420193_f14fdbda72_h.jpg
Pretty self-explanatory, but the real score is the little envelope at the bottom:
51394171660_11bb22461c_h.jpg
An original set of vintage instructions for a Weaver scope, in the original envelope. Those three things came to $8.50, still too much for an estate sale, but sometimes that is how it goes.

I didn’t know what they were Lugz so I just grabbed them out of the .25 box on a guess. Turns out they’re novelty birthday candles. Light , not Lite.

That's the second PA can in a short time for me BMW! The first was the Desk sized can!

I did some research into he CI Skillet, and its a Vollrath Manufacturing made skillet! right up there with Grizwold, and at least 50 years old as they stopped making CI cookware in the 60's... Now to do some cleanup adn recondition the seasoning... its been neglected...

Made it to a few sales this weekend, felt like a got a few good deals and picked up a few pieces that I'm excited about...

First was a garage sale, I got there mid morning and surprisingly most folks didn't seem interested in the tools, so I got to pick uninterrupted for a while which was nice. Lots of foreign stuff at this one but there was some USA mixed in. I was pleasantly surprised when I checked out and the guy said I dunno...5 bucks? Uh, that'll be fine sir!

What you see here is pretty much what you get, the Herbrand box was full of junk that I dumped, the stuff in there now was mixed in. There's yet another SK set to complete, the 1/2 in set in the tray is Craftsman V or VV (can't remember), along with some cool Indestro and some older stuff.

IMG_3183.jpg

The next sale was advertised as "kind of an estate sale", but the ad mentioned several shops and garages so I had it pretty high on my list. After a long drive, when I got there it looked like the family had held pretty much all the tools back and I was kinda bummed. After digging around a bit though I found some cool old rusty stuff that I'm looking forward to bringing back to life.

I expected to pay a bit more for this bunch as the sale was pretty organized. I was happy when I got another "I dunno, 5 bucks"? Yes, that'll be fine ma'am! Particularly excited about the Columbia draw knife, timber slick, and what I believe is a Duro ratchet, more on that in the next slide...

IMG_3189.jpg
Next sale I went to was a retiring contractor, I wasn't particularly high on this sale as I'd seen the ad up for several weeks and I figured it was pretty well picked over. It was in the area of the previous sale though so I ran by before I had to meet a guy to sell some wrenches. Ended up picking up some stuff I liked, and found yet another Duro (I think) ratchet but this one had the whole set! The guy identified it as his Dad's by the nickname on the bottom, got a little misty, and almost kept it. I wouldn't have begrudged him that but he eventually decided to let it go.

Also picked up yet another SK box to fill up along with 3 SK 3/8" ratchets, one of which is freewheeling but I bet it's just clogged. There is also a Lectrolite DBE, Proto punch, and mystery DBE. This guy drove a little harder bargain than the last two and I left with this for $15.

IMG_3184.jpg

His dad's nickname was Bugs as a kid...

IMG_3185.jpg
IMG_3187.jpg

Went to a few other sales after these ones but they were all dead ends. The last two I went by were already shut down prior to 3 PM so I'm gonna side with everyone else and complain about sale hours. Wasted the last 1/2 hour of my free time slot, dammit!

Yeah, a UNIMAT for $30 is an absolute steal! I bought some stuff from a guy a few years ago who had a packed shed. He had a UNIMAT. I didn't know what I was looking at but got all excited about this incredibly small lathe. I tried to buy it but he didn't want to sell. $30? Wow!!

My fiftieth trip this year (Lugz 2021_50) was outstanding for one little 6" OAL reason! Everything else was just filler. :)

20210821_093842.jpg

I picked all these things out of the same garage close-out load as the last two days. Today I decided to be kinder to my knees so I dumped one of the milk crates and used it as a little stool to sit on. After awhile I would just hold it in place under my **** and skooch it to the right to the next milk crate as I went. When there were too many things to hold in one hand I grabbed the can. At one point the vendor made a joke about it filling up that I knew was meant to be an implication of his mindset during our impending dickering, but there were so many people there and he was so harried that when I later presented the whole can without dumping the contents and made an offer, he took it.

Best part of the day though was running into another toolhound I hadn't seen in a few years. He's a glazier, but he's a Florida snowbird only up here a few months working part-time. He liked chrome and me pre-chrome so we would partner and tip each other off as we worked the tables. Anyway, he told me he found a Bonney 3/4-inch drive set in the box. Didn't have it with him, though. Then he tells me his daughter just bought a rowhouse in Roebling. Yes, the town named after the guy whose company built the Brooklyn bridge, among others. So I told him about Roebling "Alligator" wrenches and that I had an extra one if his daughter wanted to hang it somewhere like a decoration and locally relevant interesting conversation piece. Cameraderie and karma are good, but, yes, I am hoping that will be buy me down some discount favor on the price of the Bonney 3/4 set!
Good stories Lugz! I just read The Great Bridge by David McCullough last year. It was a great read! What info do you have on that little wooden handled driver? I've got one similar but shorter. Did you buy the 3/4 Bonney set? If so pics please! :0)

As usual Don, you are a fount of information! Thank you! I was a little confused when I took a bit of 200 grit to the side of that little DBE that usually would have had a brand stamp and there was nothing.

I also never would have guessed SK on the ratchet, now that you've pointed me in the right direction it's the first tool listed on the AA SK page...

For the guys who don't venture into the Vintage Board, here are some cleaned up pics from the last few days. If you want to see more, check out the 'Oilers', 'K-D', 'Neverslip', 'Anderson Turn-More' (new!), and 'National Plier Company' (new!) threads. And since I got rained out today by Hurricane Henri pocket rocketing up the east coast, I just did a Curator's Corner on utility knives on my thread, too, prompted by the two I found yesterday.

Ok. I checked mine it's a "Yankee" No. 2H Handyman. Not sure who made it.
If it doesn't say North Brothers, probably Stanley. They bought them out in 1946. I'll post mine in the 'Spiral Ratcheting Screwdrivers' thread.

Oh, and my buddy didn't have the Bonney 3/4 set with him. He is swinging up to Maine, probably won't be until September.

Found this 8" Dayton Electric co. grinder on Marketplace for $50. I think it scared the owner by the noise that was caused by sitting on a thin sheet metal stand. The stand acted like a speaker and the new never balanced wheel made so much noise you had to yell over it. Quieted right down with dressing and bracing the stand with plywood and mdf. It weighs 135 pounds not counting the stand.
I saw a sign for a tool sale on the way back and picked up the machinist box for $40. Inside is clean and all the drawers are free.

Yesterday’s pawn shop buy. Dude cut me a deal on a box of stuff behind the counter he was tired of looking at. Snap On, Matco, Mac, Blue Point, an S-K, and a little drill bit set. I added a Proto short dbe and a Vulcan/Williams dual marked flex socket.9D6C23D7-317A-47F0-B054-A0B42E30EADD.jpeg

Wow, too many great finds to pick a favorite here!

Am I the only one who remembers collecting those McDonald's glasses, waiting for a new one each week???!!!

We had another citywide garage sale this past weekend (Pacifica for the locals), and I found a few things. This one was very poorly organized, they only gave you a location, and a few gave start time, or day of the weekend. Supposedly an 8am start, but 2/3 of the ones we hit before 10 were no shows.
First find, after about 8 no show drivebys, was an IOB Stanley #4, about the commonest version, from the latest era before pure dreck set in (maroon), and she was convinced it was very expensive back then, $40. Unfortunately, like many locally sourced tools, it was rusty, and expensive for what it was, but I bought it anyway, hoping to kick the juju loose. Things looked up after that. The next buy was the electric hammer and Alltrade air chisel both for less than the plane.
The complete haul is here, with a couple of Disston and Sons saws, (pre 1917, #7 & #12) a WS (#12 look alike), all with decent blades and handles, Buell Bros Tool Handle, C Clamp, couple of ANSI face shields, parts organizer, giant Wiss shears, and a respirator w spare cartridges. Also a bunch of CDs and puzzles.

PXL_20210821_233712068-X3.jpg

The big score was a metal cabinet, 6’6” tall, about 16” square, by Change O Matic. Designed to be a uniform drop locker, it originally had 10 front doors inset in the main door, allowing an employee to grab his clean uniforms for the day or week. Unfortunately, the guy lost the main door key, and the night before had drilled it out, and broke the triple latch points. 9 of 10 lockers have keys. His wife wanted it gone, so $20 and it was mine. Chipped out some spilled shellac, and added a bunch of organization to my shop. I never intend to lock it, will be lucky if I close it regularly. I will add it to the metal cabinet thread later.

@RTM Awesome find on thar cabinet. Is the lock mechanism fixable?

@Outlawmws I worked at a few different ones in HS and early college. Must have been lucky to have good management (that cared about cleanliness and quality), and pretty good culture.

I never worked at McD's, but they have always had a rep for cleanliness. Possibly due to being a magnet for inspections.

Anyway, the wife sent me out on some errands this PM, so I hit the super expensive ES from earlier this week for half-price/lets make a deal. For $10 I picked up the following:
51395374852_21cc745428_h.jpg
From the top, a Williams flex, Snap-on 7/8's drive, Proto LA 3/4 drive, Plomb socket, BOG sliding T part, Klein ratchet (SK), thinger I am not sure about, Snap-on DBE, Plomb T-handle, Plomb pebble wrench, Williams wrench.

I also picked up this egg beater made by Parker Tools Germany:
51395380447_012eff4062_h.jpg
Taking a stroll through the house on my way out, I noticed there were a lot of antiques still left behind. I might swing by in the AM and see if I can make a deal on the cheap.

The collective knowledge of GJ strikes again!

Beemer- you’ve been on a roll with good ratchets.

Outlaw- thanks. Someone pointed that out about the drill index in the Tiny Tools thread. I missed the fact the label was covering that. There appears to be a MN connection there between the two. Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Went through the rest of yesterday’s flea haul.

-A nice group of mostly metric 1/2”drive Kobalt (Williams version) sockets.
-A vintage Snap-On 1-1/4, and Stahlwille 32mm.
-Master Mech and old Proto wrenches
-Craftsman ratcheting and pro drivers
- Cornwell stub, Matco pry bar.
-1/4 T handle branded TUSK. Never heard of it, appears imported but a handy looking piece.
