The sharpening stone on the right looks like a razor stone. If it is what I'm thinking of, the ones I've had were almost like reddish brown dried clay.

Or is it a strop with a compound on it? Old Strops were often leather. Nowadays people use even hard flat wood for strops.

Pretty good trip (Lugz 2021_52) for me this morning, especially since I was debating whether to go or not. The long skinny shank DBE wrench with the large openings is a Bonney with a 1943 date code and an FSN, which should help me identify one I already have made by Williams and painted OD green. That Oddfellow is a Gordon. The box should be self-explanatory.

I went back to the sale where I went yesterday and picked up a few things.

Those are 4" Craftsman locking pliers. I haven't seen one that small until now.

Then I was looking around and spotted this set of Vise Grip Quick Grip clamps. The package was from 2002 and had never been opened. Yes, that's a Petersen 10WR Vise-Grip in there. Interestingly enough, the plastic clamps were also made in the USA.

IMG_1322J.jpg

10WR 2.jpg

The best deal was this 1HP Craftsman block grinder. When she told me it was $50 I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough!

CBG 1.jpg

I paid ~ $70 for all of it. These are definitely the best deals that I've ever scored.

Here are my finds for the Saturday, nothing terribly spectacular, but fun stuff. L-R, A Dunlap tool box with tray that included an extra tray. The locking hasp is broken off, and the handle is in ratty shape. This one is cheap enough that I may try to repair the handle, as practice for other nicer boxes. I also got some long feeler gauge material, The box they came out of had a bunch of hack saw blades in it, so it was a bit of a surprise when one was very thin and wimpy, one at .020, .006 and .007, Millers Falls and 2x Lufkin. That same sale yielded 2x valve adjusters, a Zim without a number but with 5/8" and 11/16" nut sizes, and a Snap-on PWA-2835-1, which according to old posts here is for a Pratt Whitney Aircraft engine, the socket is labeled PWA1075-8, and looks to be 3/4", and an 11/16" Plomb swivel socket. The first sale of the day had a Ratchet Socketool, with 5 hex sockets, and 3 square head sockets, the correct extension, and two Taiwanese sockets which are quite useless to the set, with a Vinyl pouch, a small Allen set by Hunter tools, and the blue thing looks to be a clip for a set of auto wrenches, which were nowhere to be found. If someone can identify and use it, holler. And finally, 2 decent cigar boxes, for small tool storage. Hiding in the small tray is a set of replacement cutters for a Boston pencil sharpener.

SWMBO and I were up in Maine to visit my daughter and son-in-law yesterday and she (daughter) insisted on taking us to visit the famous Liberty Tool Company. For those not in the know, Liberty Tool is the resale store of a gentleman who spent decades buying up estate sales around the region. The store was packed, as the pics show, but I would characterize it as being like the third day of a three-day sale: all the good stuff was gone and only the common or the weird was left. There was no shortage of used drill bits, old block planes or worn out hand saws. I looked through all four floors for an hour and only came away with an Oldsmobile hubcap I fished out of the cobwebs in the basement. I'm most disappointed at the lack of a huge box of DBE wrenches to shift through. I'm glad I went, but I think I'd still rather find my treasures first hand. 20210828_092216.jpg20210828_092221.jpg20210828_092234.jpg20210828_092959.jpg20210828_093029.jpg20210829_111302.jpg

I was a day late to this sale, but still managed to find some good stuff. $50 all in. The Stant pressure test tool cost $10 and I’m fairly certain it has never been used and neither have the open end Craftsman wrenches.

My Snap-on interchangeable screwdriver shanks fit into the stubby Gearwrench ratcheting screwdriver handle. That cost $1 which is a far bit cheaper than the SO version.

This morning I went back to the hoarder estate sale I was at yesterday, as they were doing deep discounts. And even then, I spent a bit of money, but I think it was worth it. Here is what I found:
51411980910_c9fa5a2cb6_h.jpg
A 50s table lamp of an Asian person reading, and a Stanley #62 ruler.

51411977795_6d20ceb997_h.jpg
A handcarved giraffe, along with a vintage brochure for El Paso, TX.

51410972806_1d94d6775b_h.jpg
Emerson shortwave radio

51410228047_c097e0d487_h.jpg
A mantel clock.

51410224682_a9678bfe9d_h.jpg
A carved pipe rack, Pak Cook 235 stove, toy boiler, and a brass fish scale.

51411726049_799b5b3101_h.jpg
Delta Homecraft tablesaw, with stand. And I really wanted the stand, so I am not sure what I am going to do with the saw.

And, being me, I couldn't resist books:
51411978690_a86325c4d9_h.jpg

I haven't even got the stuff into the shop yet, its still siting in the garage. Anyway, I paid $50 for all of that.

OK, Day 2 of the big sale, and as expected some more sales, but not an many as in Pre-covid years.

I completely avoided the main drag Flea. No shortage of buyers though!! (lots of paring on the local streets and walking in for the big sale, so you can really tell...)

I was pretty selective about a lot of the sale just driving by slowly, and watching for tell-tails for a need to stop, so I did a fair bit of walking myself, after finding a spot to park myself (I always take the Samurai, its easy to park. I'd love one of those E bikes for this place....) Heh, over 6500 steps today, over 8,000 yesterday! (about 4 and 6 miles respectively)

Not as much stuff, as yesterday, but some interesting finds non the less!

First up were these two army equipment bags, $5 total:

N1 Army Gear bags.jpg

Last was this Proto #1 Phillips and a small 1/4 Filson:

N2 Proto PH #1, Filson.jpg

So now I'm clear for the interesting stuff - this all came from the same guy I got the S&H Red Devil tool yesterday:

MORE hollow handle tools (more later in the appropriate thread...)! A jewelers saw made in Germany by "Mo-Crafts", a leather marking tool, and two more small wrenches, SO 11/32 and Fairmont DOE, 3/8 - 1/4, there is another even smaller SO coming...

N3 Saw, Hollow handle, AO Fairmont Hand vise Leather tool.jpg

I also got this box of sockets, adapters, extensions, a breaker and a ratchet, I got it all, as I kept finding SO sockets...

N4 SCO box.jpg

The "package Deal" was $20; box o'stuff, adn the other stuff together... I didn't argue.

I wish the box had the lid! I spotted this as I was unloading! At first I was like "Seeds" then realized it started with "S" But not seeds...:

N5 Box.jpg

And the sort out: the Ratchet and some of the sockets (corralled lower right) were Asian made, and I've bagged those for a future YS of my own...

Back Row: All SO! 13 pieces, not counting the tiny SO DOE 3/16 - 7/32 wrench (Tiny Wrench day!). 5 MAC, 3 Cornwell, 2 Thorsen, 1 ea Walden, NB, PwrKraft, 2 Craftsman, and a BlackHawk Socket and breaker Extensions were SK, Indestro, 2 Craftsman, a US made Allen (and socket):

BMW, Nice haul!

That Saw, how small is it? I've been using a TINY 1935 7" Craftsman for a number of years now (table is al of 11X14...) for EVERYTHING. to the point I sold two 10" and an 8" TS to save space. I now have it mounted on a typewriter stand for mobility and to save space. I rip and fingerjoint on it all the time. I can use std 7-1/4" blades (3 carbides stacked for fingerjointing). Itd Dole Drawback is the Arbor length makes dadoing somewhat limited...(the wobble blades won't fit - If I made a "Sleeve nut" from a bolt, I could probably make it work... Hmmm... Is 5/8 enough to tsp, 1/2" fine...

Outlaw, I just checked and it is listed as an 8". But, I have a Dunlap one, that has the guard and guide. So I might swap those in, or if they work on this saw, go from there. I m with you on getting rid of my other saw. Its a larger Delta Homecraft so I might just keep the stand and make a low shop table out of it.

But you would have loved this sale, and I thought about you when I was wandering around. There were probably 8-10 more table saws laying around, vintage clocks everywhere, old radios, tools, books, and a building that stuff just kept coming out of. And while there was a whole mess of stuff still there, today would be the last day of the sale as the house is sold.

The circle DC (X) 2016 Duro Chrome DBE wrench is quite rare and prized by WW2 tool collectors. Good find.
-Don

Thanks Don! Unfortunately I'm an idiot and dropped it in Evaporust before you enlightened me as to its value...I actually prefer the bare steel look myself but I'm sure I just made it a lot less desirable.

On the plus side I found another smaller 2013 (edited to correct wrench #) today! What dumb luck.

Pfaustus and RTM, yes the "stone" on the right has very much of a clay type of texture/look to it and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it's a strop of some sort. It's actually got the manufacturer's name on it so I'll do a bit of research and see if I can figure out exactly what it is.

:yikes: WTF? Does that dark hollow-handle awl/bits tools have a freaking vise on it?!
Yes it does! As you saw in the Frays hollow handle thread!

And a Quote from Lugs from there:

WTF?! I think a tool pixie sprinkled magic dust on you a few days ago! You went and did it now. I haven't cranked up the ****-O-Meter to its highest setting since Wrenchguy's antique iron-and-glass rotating hardware store display!!!!!

Wow, people are really finding the bargains. Very impressive. I need to go follow Outlaw around.
I went back to the moving sale around the corner because the gentleman told me yesterday that anything left would be free after 2:00. He handed me his electrical toolbox which had three soldering irons and plenty of miscellaneous other stuff. He also passed along a working Makita sander. Everything free.

Spent most of the day driving around to sales today, some highs and some lows. I made the decision to head quite a ways south to hit a couple estate sales that were on their third day. No surprise, they were really picked over. Still found some stuff I liked...

Cheap sandpaper (1/2 off day!), a couple big Nicholson's for my knife making buddy, a Gerber chef's knife that someone attacked with a grinder, and a tiny crescent wrench just because. I also grabbed a magnetic knife holder that I forgot to put in the picture. $11 for this lot.
IMG_3223.jpg

Second sale was also totally picked over and had obviously not had nearly as many tools to start with...grabbed a few small items for $4 and headed to the next spot. I probably wouldn't have bothered even buying anything but I wanted the VLChek ratchet.

IMG_3222.jpg

After those two estate sales I was looking forward to a few garage sales on the list that hopefully hadn't been picked over. The next spot seemed like a bust at first until the gal running the sale dragged an old bucket out "just found this one, do you want to dig through it"? Why yes, yes I do. The top stuff is craftsman, the big socket is Plomb and what do you know, another Duro Chrome DBE (x). This one is the 2013. Also grabbed a few Barcalo and for whatever reason when I find motorcycle wrenches I buy them if they're cheap. The SK sockets are a mishmash of SAE and Metric. Not sure what the drag link socket is, too rusty. Will find out tomorrow.

IMG_3214.jpg

After that I felt like I was doing pretty well and headed to another estate sale for 1/2 off day. This one was staged at an offsite warehouse, and when I showed up a lot of the tools were still there because even at 1/2 off they were overpriced. Although I wasn't interested in the stuff on the table, there were totes and tool chests under the tables so naturally I started digging through them. Found a nice Mitutoyo caliper, some measures, and a few other shiny little machinist bits.

This is where it all started going bad. I forgot the shoulder bag I usually carry today so I had a tote that was in the car already. I had the tote set down behind me when this dentist looking guy starts picking through it. No biggie, I could see that it was an honest mistake (it was up on the table with the other stuff), so I just told the guy it was my pile. Then he goes: "Did you pay for it yet"? I was like "no, of course not", had no idea where he was going with the question. Then he goes "well it's not yours then!". I just gave him a stare, I'm not a violent man but if you start pulling things out of my bag we're gonna have problems! I said, it's my bag, what's not clear about that??? He mumbled some ******** about "it was a bad joke" and wandered off. I couldn't believe the nerve of the guy.

Anyway, I quickly forgot about the dude because I found a little baby bullet in one of the totes...score! Or so I thought. Finished digging through about 10 totes and 3 boxes and was ready to cash out. Took the stuff up to the lady who was checking out and she goes...none of this stuff has prices, where did you get it? I was like uh...in the totes and boxes under the table. She goes "that stuff doesn't belong in this sale, it's for a different estate!

WTF??? I was over there digging around for 1/2 an hour in full sight of the checkout about 30 feet away. Dragging these heavy *** totes across the floor which was not quiet. There was no sign or anything to indicate that the stuff under the table was off limits. So the guy running the sale comes over and is like...Oh yeah, that stuff isn't in the sale but we'll sell it to you anyway, but not at half price! Quotes me 65 for the baby bullet and says, I need to look up all the Mitutoyu so you can't buy that and no half off on the Wilton. But you can have these little oil cans at half price for $2.

Yeah right, you ain't getting a penny of my money. Couldn't walk over to tell me that stuff is off limits? He was literally 15 feet away. If I was more of a conspiracy theorist I'd wonder if he just waits for people to pull out the good stuff and then tells them they can't buy it so he knows what stuff to look up on ebay. I dunno, maybe I'm the rube for not knowing the drill there but it didn't feel right to me. I also overheard him refusing to honor 1/2 price with other customers. I won't be returning to one of their estate sales again, and if I was executing an estate I'd be pissed that they're mixing estates together!

After that I was all bent out of shape and to make it worse right after that I wasted an hour driving up to a sale that I was actively trying to avoid. Caught in the old Craigslist stale photo trap...

After all that I was pissed off until I reminded myself that I'm supposed to be doing this for fun. I still had time for a few more sales before they closed. The first couple were busts, but the last one of the day had some tools, mostly late USA craftsman. I picked up a complete 137 piece USA mechanic set missing only the 3/8 and 1/2 inch ratchet. Every other piece was in the box. Also grabbed some bike hex wrenches and a bunch of 1/4" sockets. I didn't take any pics of this because the reason I bought the set was to give it away.

Earlier in the weekend I had met a fellow tool collector as he mentioned he was a mechanic and looking to complete some sets. Long story short, we arranged to trade some of his stuff for some of mine. I have a bunch of stuff that's going in a yard sale next week so I let him pick through it. He found a few bits that he wanted, but then mentioned that his friend was also trying to get a tool set going but didn't have much in the way of trades or money. These guys were young and just starting out and one of the reasons why I rescue tools is so that I can give them to people that can't afford USA made stuff. So I added a few ratchets to the set out of my garage sale box and gave the big set to them in addition to the stuff I traded. Hopefully they were stoked. Anyway, this was way too long. Sorry.

Here is the stuff I got in trade from my new tool collecting acquaintance. Him and his buddy are now hunting Plomb, Duro, Indestro, Vlchek and Long C for me:) Plomb and Indestro up top, little Plomb DBE, Circle H ratchet, Long C t and DBE, Vlchek DBE. Little wrench day!

Ok I'll shut up now. Sorry for the rant.

I forgot to post this toolbox, got it at the same sale as the Duro 2013...Looks military to my uneducated eye but I didn't find any stamps or labels. If anyone knows more it would be appreciated!

Hee hee. Troublemaker.
I have been called worse :) Like pot stirrer
I managed a good Estate sale in today, and I appear to have beat most all the usual Estate sale crowd despite seeing the ad more than an hour after it was posted today. Certainly they had been open at least an hour. maybe 2!

I spent more that I have in a LOG time adn its mostly tools!

I did get a near new in box Coleman 220e - 3-58 date, I think it been fired once! Plus a can of fuel. I passed on a wood "Camp kitchen" he had clearly made himself (the wood shop was VERY nice) and a Coleman 426 3 burner stove.

a1 220E.jpg

and a Fisher scientific Shaker hot plate:

a2 Fuel mixer-Hotplate.jpg

those were from the drive and garage - then it was back ot the "wood shop" two metal shads setup corner to corner, adn upfited quite nice with concrete floos adn yoy would hardly kow it was a shed inside. I started finding tools -

Proto Puller, Craftsman Drown era 1/4" set - no ratchet, but WITH the Tommy bar! craftsman Impact, SO n=mpact adaptor, Utica wire formers, adm the rest is P&C.

a3 Proto CM SO P&C.jpg

MORE P&C! A full set! All but the adjustable were "100" P&C; the hatchet is a True Temper Flint Edge.

a4 P&C TT-FE.jpg

A Clamp on vise, Not frozen but certainly stiff, the casting void has a mico-crack radiating down from it, so a "Shelf Queen". Only marking is a "1" on each main casting. 1-13/16 jaws. The screw tip looks familiar I think Lugz and a couple others have vises with a similar fanged tip?

a5 Vise 1-13-16.jpg

And 2 more vises! A Morgan 45, and a Craftsman 5176 (3-1/2") - (EDITED)

This DOES NOT map to the catalog numbers? 5169 from '49 -54 at least, and that model changed to 5170 by at least 57... (not in the catalogs by 1960)

a6 vises.jpg

a6 vise morgan.jpg

a6 vise CM.jpg
Heck of a haul there! Are you interested in parting with that proto wheel puller ? Anything you are interested in trading for ? I have starting acquire more proto tools in those yellow boxes. I just traded d42 for some unused extractors in a yellow proto box

im not certain, but that may have been a very silly temper tantrum on your part. I suspect most would jump all over a Wilton baby bullet for $65.

Yeah, could be. At that point I was so annoyed I wasn't gonna buy anything anyway no matter how good the deal was. But I could have been wrong...

Ok I'll shut up now. Sorry for the rant.

Don't be sorry--it's good to get it out and it reminds the rest of us that we are not the only ones confronted with this ****. I've never had to deal with anyone as insolent as your 3l0H22A, but we've all met the pushy dicks that want to dig through the box you are up to your elbows in--"Don't mind me!" Yeah, you may have shot yourself in the foot over the Wilton, but nobody needs or wants to deal with incompetents or worse yet, shysters. Too many honest professionals out there to waste time and energy with the others.

Thanks OR for the kind words! I gave this some more thought last night as RTM made a good point about allowing my temper to get in the way of a transaction I might normally go through with (although after looking at pics of baby bullets I think I may have mid identified the vise as I could see the slide through the back)

At the end of the day I do this to have fun, and I suppose that the less I can let others get under my skin the better off I’ll be. I’ll try to take this as a learning lesson moving forward.

I also should take into consideration that maybe these folks are new to estate sales and don’t know tools very well. Cause I haven’t met a tool picker yet that wouldn’t dig through multiple Kennedy machinist boxes sitting right under the table!

And finally, 310H22A, hah! I’ll be stealing that one! Thanks again.

Heck of a haul there! Are you interested in parting with that proto wheel puller ? Anything you are interested in trading for ? I have starting acquire more proto tools in those yellow boxes. I just traded d42 for some unused extractors in a yellow proto box
Sorry Smoke, its filling a gap in the puller department.

Yeah, could be. At that point I was so annoyed I wasn't gonna buy anything anyway no matter how good the deal was. But I could have been wrong...
im not certain, but that may have been a very silly temper tantrum on your part. I suspect most would jump all over a Wilton baby bullet for $65.
So how many guys have pm’d you for the sale info already? :ROFLMAO:

Heh, as mentioned above I think I mis-identified the vise. I'm not into vises and mainly just grabbed it because I was going to give it to a buddy. After looking at pics a little more carefully I'm pretty sure it was a Super Junior and not a baby bullet. I will say that I had NO idea that those things were worth as much as they are! Either way now that I dragged it out I'm sure the guy looked it up on eBay and will be asking way too much for it...

Yeah, there have been a few times that I have dug up some rusty gold, only to have the seller do the old eBay shuffle. Check their phone and immediately try to convince me that it is worth X bucks. And when you point out to them that, no, as this one isn't clean, is missing parts, while the online one is pristine...

Sometimes you can't win for losing.

In addition to posting photos and accurate descriptions, another inequality to eBay is the burdon on the seller to cover buyer dissatisfaction, delivery faults, etc.
I’m not much of an estate sale buyer, but tracking down and convincing garage sale and flea sellers to refund money without a receipt - not the same as eBay.
It’s just not the same market.
