Had a pretty good day Saturday, picked up lots of goodies. The first planned stop yielded a few goodies, setting a good tone for the day. This was part of a neighborhood sale, so 20+ sales, only moved the car twice, so the dogs got lots of pets, and we got some sunshine, a nice change for us coastsiders. Overall spent a little more than planned, but a few non tool items were a little too tasty.

Finds included (L-R) mini 2.5G shop vac, dust brush, 2 pairs of green painted sheet metal vice grips, Proto and XCelite nut drivers, Proto 280 pliers 10”, older DeWalt miter gauge, Snap-on and PH type screwdrivers, a Klein wobble screw driver, and a long reach Bonney 2126 Carb Adjusting tool (in the Bonney thread), misc Drill goodies, including 2 different partial Hanson sets, one mostly for the metal box, 4 misc pliers including a Klein needle nose w odd jaws, like holding a small circuit board, ratchet garden clipper by Florian, 10 clamps, including a machinist clamp, some sockets, mostly SK, Proto, Williams, Vlcheck wrenches, homemade hack saw, Brown and Sharpe caliper, Keystone M1555 damaged hex drive with the plug, and an unknown Snap Ring plier.

PXL_20210912_001130657-X3.jpg

The last targeted stop was a big winner, got the Kennedy chest, loaded, offered for much less than I would pay for a chest in this condition. It was grampa’s chest, and he worked at an electronics mfg shop down the peninsula. I got to this one late, and the previous guy took a bunch of measuring tools, dang. I grabbed a handfull of clamps and other tools from the 1st pic there. All the stuff from the rules and right came out of the chest. The total list is (L-R) Bushnell 60s?vintage 10x50 binox, 1 pair each 18 & 20“ drawer slides, CenTech digital caliper ( no battery, but in original packaging, probably indicating it eats batteries, Millers Falls and Lufkin rules, Williams superenches and Dunlap stamped black wrenches, couple of custom assembly guides, Snap-on midget ratchet and wrenches, 2x tiny Hanson drill sets, 2x Stanley Yankee right angle ratchet screwdrivers, home made pin wrench, Williams stubby screwdriver, Wiss shears, Starrett 425 caliper (saw a pair at $75 at the prior sale), automatic wire strippers, Crestoloy adjustables, P&C 3/8” ratchet, lots of different files, including knife profile in RH drawer, pin vise plus in LH, lots of soldering tools like heat sinks, clamps, alligator clips, etc, too much to detail so far. Some weird bending guide, assuming for sizing hole distances on circuit boards.

PXL_20210912_003459581-X3.jpg

The box itself has obviously been standing with its flap open for a long time. All the fittings have a normal level of patina, but the finger loop on the flip down cover is shiny like new, never seen that before. No key found yet, but still lots of smalls to poke thru. The leather handle on top is in reasonable shape, places it as fairly old, think 1945+, & has the center hasp. One side of the leather around the rings was falling apart, but the leather was reasonably good, but developed cracks being carried to the truck. It won’t be carried full any time soon now that it’s home. At least one drawer has slipped its slide, will need to fuss with it a bit.

I’ll see if I have a key

Thanks for the input Lugz and Provincial. Even if I can’t find out exactly what the anchor stamp means, I think it is still pretty cool.

Lugz we should swap “need” lists!

Last weekend finds (still in “as-found” condition) include:

Russell-Jennings original wooden No. 100 box of thirteen double-thread spur auger bits
Reed No 103R bench vise
Shephard vise #60 (Prentiss)
Charles Parker (C. Parker Co.) No. 20 miniature jeweler's vise
2 ½" jaws vise (need help identifying; has native blue coloring?)
Wards Deluxe Quality 3 ½” flat top anvil vise
Woden #186B/1 swivel base bench vise
vintage 5" jaws machinist drill press vise (very heavy; rotates and tilts)
and a relatively rare vintage Prentiss #37 Patent Swivel Bottom Jeweler's Vise with a lot of the original finish.

I will need to restore three of the vises (spray-bombed), although in general I’d have to say a great vise haul day! It was one of those, “how fast can I get out my wallet?” pricing. I plan to post some more photos on the Vise thread, if you are interested.

Thanks.

The hammer and nut driver pouch were found together. Seller was funny. I asked for the price on the pouch (peanuts) and then the hammer (deluxe peanuts, but he didn't even notice or care they were the same brand, just not that kind of seller), so I made him an offer for both rounding up to the next highest bill, and he countered with $1 more, justifying the increase by extolling the virtues of a heavy ball-pein hammer as if he was fleecing me, when in reality I stole them both, just annoyed I had to wait for him to make change for a dumb dollar. The any-angle eggbeater was from a different seller and it was one of the better things he has ever had, but he is not brand conscious either, and always just looking to get rid of stuff.

The RHFT Duro rat is later than I collect, but I couldn't leave that or the Dart combo, which is only the second one I have ever seen in the wild. Just my luck I'll get home and find out the other one is the same size. :Freak:

That happens to me too. Currently happening while I'm trying to find metal pan lids to fit orphan lidless pans. I measure as best I can but they hardly ever fit.

I suggest you sell BOTH wrenches. That way the next one you buy will not be a duplicate!

Hit an estate sale held by one of my favorite ES companies here in town. Turned out to be worth the early arrival. What I thought was an SK box from the ES pics was indeed that. I think I've read in the past what the intended use of these long boxes is but I've forgotten. In really good condition but the clasp might have a replacement part and a damaged part I can't say for sure. I was excited when the guy working the garage put a price on it. The GTD set was a surprise as I did not see that in the ES pics. Complete and in incredible condition! I had been hoping to come across a set like this some day. The long C Craftsman 1/4" socket set has what looks to be all original long C parts. Although, should there be a little bar (tommy bar?) for the hole at the end of the breaker bar? If so I think that might be the only thing missing. Everything but the ratchet seems to have a dried looking finish/film on them. Cosmoline? The ratchet is also marked Circle-H. Is there a thread for these sets? (I'll have to check the FAQ or Lugz will go crazy! ;0) I bought the Snap-On drivers and the Craftsman 6512 toolbox to resell. The Stanley (No 750?) chisel was another exciting find. The hardly full boxes of Kreg screws were too cheap to pass up. Do we have a thread for the GTD stuff? Fun morning.

As usual, there were some incredible things in the LEFT-BEHIND category, including this gorgeous, drool-worthy, never been used C.E. JENNINGS hand saw kit, complete with handle and interchangeable blades, in its original leatherette pouch. Even though I'm not even a sawdust maker, I was sorely, sorely (went back twice!) tempted, but $200 was just too rich for my blood!

Carpenters. That slot in the lid was for the short leg of a large square to stick out of.

Everyone seems to agree it was some kind of oil, probably BLO.
The ratchet is also marked Circle-H. Is there a thread for these sets? (I'll have to check the FAQ or Lugz will go crazy! ;0)
Craftsman - Long C era
Do we have a thread for the GTD stuff?
Not GTD, but I recommend the "Tap and Die" thread. Lots of /G\T/D\ on there!
Fun morning.
I'll say! Nice scores.

Thanks Lugz! Makes sense the S-K is a carpenter's box. The bottom still has a piece of 1/4" fiberboard with a piece of wood glued onto it with 3 slots for hand saws. I'll check the FAQ first for these threads as that will probably be quicker than using search which always gives me a headache. :lol_hitti

Looks original from here, and I agree with Lugz on carpenter's box, as does the catalog. Beware, they tend to get REALLY awkward fast if you put planes in them. More intended for saws and big squares, not many planes.

Wow! That fiber board saw rest in the box is original! I had no idea. How cool! Here are a couple of closer pics of the badge & clasp. Is it just damaged (3rd pic)? I thought the part of the clasp missing most of it's paint (2nd pic) might not be original. Thanks RTM!

Tools from the Estate sale this morning were gone over with a fine tooth comb by the neighbors last night before the public was allowed in. Almost no decent tools were left.

The only things I came away with are these two push button switch covers for $1 each. The 4-gang is the much nicer--and older of the two. Made by The Perkins Electric Switch Manufacturing Company. Hardly any info on the net about them except that they were incorporated in 1895 and acquired by Bryant Electric in Bridgeport Conn in 1899. Seems unlikely the 2-gang was made before the turn of the century as it seems to have a protective film over the brass.

If any of you North-of-the-Mason-Dixon-Line types have any info on them, please share.

About the only thing I know about those is that the original switches in my house were push buttons like that. Sadly, only two of the originals have made it when I bought it.

I hit two estate sales, both of which had zero interesting tools. I also hit a garage sale and two Restores.

The garage sale was kind of odd. No one was outside, and I figured someone would come out while I looked. There was a big bucket of tools or two, and it was marked $20 for everything, or .50 a tool. Digging through it I mostly found junk, but the Armstrong and the Williams came home with me. But the people having the sale never came out, so I tucked a dollar in the door and when on my way.

At the Restore, I found the Stanley level, a blade guard for a Delta, and the brace. I normally don't bother looking at braces unless they seem in really good condition, which this one was. And then I saw the mark:
51483779582_261d87c424_b.jpg
I have never seen a Proto brace before, but that was coming home with me. I picked up a light bulb glass at another Restore, and a roll of packing paper. All of that set me back $20 even.

Lugz, that angle hand drill looks a lot like my JOIC. (JO Mfg.) Mine may be a tad smaller> and has a rounded cap with 4 half ribs for grip traction. I love it and use it surprisingly often! It was indispensable when I was building my camp box pantry. Mine i 9" long not counting the handle cap.

I agree the carpenters boxes CAN get "awkward" (HEAVY) if you are not careful! I have one full of hand saws, adn another full of BIG Whitney punches, and a couple of strap cutters. THAT one isn't fun to move!

I was trying to remember that word - "nest". My thought is that although those are much nicer than most, $200 is probably equal to or more than full antique tool dealer retail.

I was trying to avoid the word "set", perfectly appropriate with "wrench", but potentially confusing with "saw" for reasons every GJ VB follower knows all too well from 90% of the whatzits! Haha. I settled on "kit", and I like "nest", but see that catalogs also use "outfit", which is neat.

Concur. And this guy has a shop in Frenchtown I think. I have snagged things from him before, but only when he gets tired of it sitting.

I guess today (Lugz 2021_55) was Proto & Duro-Chrome day at the flea market.

Heck of a find there Lugz! Especially that nut driver pouch!

If you want modern, but vintage appearing push button switches, Rejuvenation in Portland makes them. They have provisions for a ground wire :)

Thanks for sharing that link. Those engravings are a delight!

Did you happen to notice the No121 Handy Household Outfit on p10? That multitool holder at the heart of it looks mighty familiar.
