...and while I'm at it, the vintage Newsboys, leather and Harris tweed. Also flea market finds. Worn motorcycle style, backwards, with the brim in the back, never the front. :)

For flea market shopping at its best - in the winter months, when only the ********* vendors and buyers are out!

WWII mechanics' cap, unknown, winter trooper, Dan'l Boone, and my active duty winter cap.

Crushable straw, Pork Pie, Holden Caulfield. I only wear the last backward, mostly to drive the wife crazy. These are usually estate sale finds. I also have the ubiquitous Kangol and a ball cap from the local university, winners of the college world series on more than one occasion.

Pretty good haul (Lugz 2021_67) this morning...

20211028_102113.jpg

...incl...

- Vacuum-Grip dykes
- a couple Channellocks I don't have
- an antique BHM valve lifter
- a few Williams and one Duro 8xx series ignition wrench
- Reed & Prince screwdriver with all kinds of cool markings
- tiny unknown nutdriver
- a nice spread of Plomb pebble combos
- DI made unbranded (perhaps Western Auto kit) 'Chromium Vanadium' hinge handle.

Although the best part was two conversations.

The first was with two giddy schoolgirls. We seemed to be following each other around, which was of course highly unusual given the time of day and the kinds of things I was looking at, so I finally asked what the heck they were doing. They were in a sculpture class, they said, and looking for things to make animals out of. So I complimented them on their teacher and got out my phone to give them some ideas from some of the left-behinds I had seen last year.

The second was a guy I bought a few things from at a $1 table. He also had a GMTK toolbox, which was in really good shape. He saw me looking it over so I told him what it was, explained the oiler hole in the top tray, and mentioned that it was likely an unmarked E.J. McAleer and made right across the river in Philly. He said he lived in Philly and that was his best friend's name and maybe they were related because he seemed to recall some kind sheet metal fabrication in their tree. o_O

I HATE days like today. Saw a estate sale ad last night with Craftsman red & gray chevron (2nd gen) stack, 3-drawer roller with lower compartment and a 10-drawer top chest. They looked to be in excellent condition. In the pics there were lots of Craftsman tools (sockets, ratchets, wrenches, etc from the same period as the boxes and IN the boxes. So I didn't sleep that well last night being excited about the possibility of upgrading one of my red & gray stacks. Arrived early enough to be the first in line by a mile. Once they started, the tools had been taken out of the red & gray stack and put into more recent CM boxes that were smaller. No big deal but the red & gray stack was priced at $650! The tools were spread across two hand carry boxes (all red) and priced at $500 each! I informed the estate sale company owner that her prices were way too high which as you could imagine she appreciated. When I asked if they were going to discount prices she said "no". There were Craftsman and other brand hammers that looked hardly used in a tub priced at $15-$20 each. A 2-tube package of JB Weld that looked to be from the 70s was $5. I was so shocked that by the time I found the $2-$4 per tool box I bought the 4 items pictured below without even realizing I would've been overpaying at $1 each. I should be thankful they were only $2 each. 2 of the screwdrivers are unmarked. The red handled one is only marked "United Tempered". Anyone ever seen one of these? Know the maker? After checking AA, I assume the Lectrolite DBE is an early one from the 30s or 40s. Is there anyway to date these beyond after "Lectrolite Corp formed" and before the "SK-Lectrolite period"? Oh well, better luck next time! Sure can't be that insane again.

I bet if you go back on the last day all that stuff will still be there...and maybe by that time the seller will have come to her senses. Sorry man, I hate days like that too!

At those prices, that stuff isn't going anywhere...

...MAYBE she'll come around... but probably not.

I value my time and personal sanity too much to deal with a person like that twice. Of course, there are many stories here from folks who thrive on that sort of thing and claim great victories, so don't go by me!

That's possible but she said they'd sell it at another estate sale later or the owner's would keep it.

There is a local estate sale company that has developed a reputation for intentionally pricing items beyond fair market.
At the end of the sale, they low ball the owners who just really want to empty the house, & buy out the lot.
They then take it back to their own brick & mortar location to sell.

It really depends on the contract they have with the owners. Some specify certain prices for various objects on the first day, then increasingly large discounts after that. The shoppers (the estate is the actual customer) have no way of knowing, though it can be figured out to a certain degree. And, yes, there are companies that are unscrupulous, but, again, without knowing the contract there is often no way to tell. I do know that there are a couple near me that I wouldn't do business with. Mostly as they have zero knowledge of pricing tools.

In any case, here are today's finds:
51636385218_5643891ee4_c.jpg
WWII air raid helmet, auto photo, Blackhawk breaker bar, FACOM Renault valve adjuster, a local company made **** gage, and a BOG socket.

Definitely in my Personal Top 3! Along with the gauge, which is PLOMB TOOL CO. (I have never seen one before!), and the very early carb kit in that leatherette case. (Forgot to snap a photo with it open - see Pic 1 for a BEFORE cleaning view.)

The Snap-on "Mechanic's Helper" at the bottom and the CRAFTSMAN sharpening stone in its original box (I think that's a 1920's logo, which seems incongruous to me, but that's my understanding...) round out my Top 5.

The "S" wrenches are J.P. Danielson CONTROLLED STEEL and the the DBE's are script Herbrand Multi-Hex. The midget hinge handles are a black ox Walden (with the socket on the drive stud) and NB. And two Dunlap pieces I might just have to keep!

Most of that came out of the same garage close-out and the guy was obviously a mechanic. It was really odd how he seemed to like his DBE's in pairs. See Pic 2 & 3. Those are all LEFT-BEHIND's: two P&C, two BB's, and two unbranded CHROME-ALLOY.

Today's flea market trip (Lugz 2021_60) yielded some goodies.

20211007_114719.jpg

Not sure on the age of the Crafty brace bit gasket/washer cutter. Neither the logo or box much obvious help.

The midget set is mainly Williams, although that row of sockets in the middle is all NB Chrome Vanadium.

Haven't researched the "Master Oiler" yet, either, though I am guessing Eagle or GEM.

I will let people surmise for themselves on the little 2 oz. ball pein.

The true (and only legally true) "Alligator" is probably the coolest piece in the lot if you're a wrench nerd like me. It's pre-Roebling.

The beavertail SOE is a Billings and the toolpost machine wrench is a Whitman & Barnes.
Is the Hammer a Paschall ? (plomb)

That hat is called a Piedmont. Not a BoyScouts leader hat. But, as with pith helmets, some things stick.

Thanks! Might seriously be in the running for my personal favorite haul of the year.

I can see why! I might would have to nickname that walking stick "Groot." :)

Nice find.

Around here people think they're made of gold. There's a guy who hand carves them and then there's another guy who just has a hundred antiques and vintage. Granted, they're cool, but I am not paying $35-50 for a walking stick.

The Buffum metal screwdriver is my favorite.
-Don
I knew that was my favorite immediately--but for the wrong reason. I assumed it was a Nazi tool, so I got a new wrinkle in my brain today!

Here are my finds for the day:

Craftsman Long C Auger Set
Lighted magnifier for my neighbor who doesn't have one in his garage but always asks me to try and read a tiny obscured tool marking... $1
Evans & Co. 100 foot Steel Tape--The rewind was not working so I got it for $1. Took it apart and found the leader at the end of the reel broken. Clipped the end of the tape and fashioned two rivets out of nails (the neighbor's idea!) and it works perfectly.
Jet Sweeper Nozzle. I asked the price and the guy said Aww, just take it.

29 Oct 21-1.jpg 29 Oct 21-2.jpg
29 Oct 21-1a.jpg 29 Oct 21-1b.jpg 29 Oct 21-1c.jpg

The CM box is showing a lot of rust on the outside so I was astounded by how nice the inside has kept. Only two of the bits are original, but that's better than nothing.

Hit a couple of sales today, the first one was one of my favorite types, were you get to dig through a working mans shop. I didn't find much in the way of tools, as they were set aside for younger family members, but I did find a lot of good stuff:
51640087253_833224baa4_c.jpg
Wood drill bit index, waterproof note pad, Raleigh bicycle headbadge, Stanley turnbuttons, emery cloth, drill bit, fish scale, Master lock with keys, bakelight bulb socket, music box part, vintage tire gage, Stanley knife, Craftsman pistol grip drill, toy VW bus, grinder shields, saw file holder, vintage plug ends, tommy bar, bag of wire nuts, Craftsman drill chuck, and a piece of tool steel.
51640726705_aa86557852_c.jpg
sockets (Craftsman BE, Firestone, Bog), ax wedge, pullie and shive, knife switch, socket rail, Bonney Zennel wrenches, Indestro DBE, Snap-on whet stone, electric motor mount in box, SpecialDelux trim, Armstrong line wrench, window latch, coat hook, and a few cabinet latches. All of that was $15, and I also bought
51640346029_4fac3b9dd7_c.jpg
a Craftsman pre-flat head. That cost me another fifteen, and needs a new switch and wire.

I am sure I left something out of this, but there was so much little fiddly stuff, that at the end of the day I went back for more!

Nice Haul, Beemer!! Especially the grinder--with the original eye shields even though they were separated from the grinder. Congrats on that!

Outlaw Loving that hiking staff! Nice find!

OR Do you know who made auger bits at that time for Sears? Nice pickup!

bmw What is the thing on top of the Sears drill chuck plastic bag? Looks almost identical to something I saw last week.

Lugz bought one last week, for adjusting the teeth on giant tree felling saws, you can file, adjust the rakers, link to a book in this thread. Saying it does more than just hold a file for joining.

I got nothing to go to worth the time today - that's out of 15 ads...

Oh well, I also need time to get stuff cleaned up and put away, especially with the holidays coming....

So my guesses are router box (black craftsman on the left), 1/2 or 3/4dr tools in the back box, and central indicators for the black box under the tacklebox. WAG is another machinist tool in between the main wood box and the black box in the center (smaller wooden box).

How did I do?

“Boat Tooles” looks promising, even if it is packed with toiles instead of tools.

The long box behind all else is heritage-era C’man…I guess 1/2dr.

OK, taking a quick break from raking the fall out of my yard (turning 50 ain't no joke...) Yes, the small box is router bits, LessorSon is correct about the socket box, but most importantly, I made the right choices in which two estate sales to hit this AM. As soon as I finish my chores and get some beer, I will go into the whole pile.
