WOW!!! MikeinRI in for the kill at the end!

...with barely a week to go in the voting, only 37 and 34 members, respectively, have bothered to enter a few clicks to cast a vote for Host & PotY.

Well, without a massive write-in campaign, I can't win POTY since I'm not on the ballot (this compressor really did show up too late in the year).

But, I just voted for POTY, and see that there's currently a TIE, so we definitely need more folks to jump in!!!

I helped try to avoid a tie by voting for aged aircraft tracking system 😉😂

Daily service announcement: Please remember to vote for both picker of the year, and next year's thread host.

Vote for Picker of the year, 2021!

Vote for 2022 Garage Sale thread host

(someone suggested that I put these links directly in the message for ease of cell phone use, so here you go phonies!)

Edit to add: Christmas is in less than a week, Saturday to be exact. And, as always happens, New Year is one week after that. So, for the most part, garage sales, estate sales, flea markets, swap meets, are all done for the year. There might be some thrift stores, tool stores, pawnshops, or whatnot open, but the chances of finding things are just about over. So, please, keep the thread alive until the end. Talk among yourselves about gifts to give, what you hope for in the new year to come, and just be generally sociable.

Thank you,

Aaron

How I spent $71 this morning…
B3C2AAAF-555D-4F13-AC8E-02B7CC26143B.jpeg

Back home, I crossed the street where a neighbor was running a porch sale and picked up a handful of mostly parts saws and other smalls.
Wow, the handle on that front one looks well worn in, like someone loved the heck out of it. Bummer about the rust on the blade.

Thanks, Aaron! I thought I was losing my mind because even though I appear to have "Show Signatures" enabled, they don't actually show (on my Android)...

Nice score LS! you will like the compound tongs. Not sure its as strong a grip near the tips as nippers with jaws ground down and angle iron jaws welded in, but close. - if you have some old toolbox edges that are "rippled" give them a strong squeeze, and see if they go completely flat.

That is exactly what I was thinking!
Too bad I was busy thinking it at the seller’s table, because a guy next to me grabbed another compound handle tool for crimping stovepipe - sort of the opposite effect.

I think that one might be a Disston “Imp” or some other manufacturer’s equivalent. No finish on the handle, no medalion, and I don’t see evidence of an etch. The Craftsman pruning saw is actually the only one close to useable. There is a “Jackson” and another Disston-made “Warranted Superior” backsaw, both of which may clean up okay, and broke-repaired-broke-again handsaw from which I will harvest two sawnuts and likely scrap.
I really only bought them to be neighborly. The guy was hurt bad several years ago, and recently recovered enough to start flipping cars and other used merchandise with his son.

No way I can compete with the total suckage of a free awesome air freaking compressor, but I’m gonna keep swinging in preparation for an epic 2022.

Yesterday’s pawn shop run resulted in my earlier posted Cornwell JR30. (Thanks for the information on that one).

What I didn’t tell you all about was that I left another Cornwell 3/8 ratchet there. It was locked up tighter than…well…it was frozen solid.

I went back today and agreed to their price in hopes I could revive it or rebuild it, or that the Cornwell gods would smile upon me.

When I got home, I decided to try the Seafoam Deep Creep that I recently learned about here on this site. Wow! 2 hours later, she was spinning like new. VERY impressed with the Seafoam and will be cleaning and servicing both ratchets tomorrow. 9337B8F4-FFCD-4F45-BEB7-DCD035663A89.jpeg

Here are the ratchets I showed in my last couple posts. Both of them now completely torn apart, cleaned up, and lubed. I ended up paying $30 for the pair and they’re going straight in to my daily use box. FA539E6B-59D7-4280-9124-D95D86687C5D.jpeg

Yes, that Seafoam Deep Creep is the real deal. Works great without that nasty smell of Kroil or PB Blaster.

Looks like you picked up a JR-40 to go along with that JR-30, great find.

A lot of people won't look twice at the 30 tooth Cornwell ratchets as the 80/90/120 Ratchets are all the rage these days but I personally love the Cornwell with it's super low back drag, easily serviced, and that great handle design.

If you ever need a service kit you can grab one off the Cornwell truck as both ratchets use the same kit, part# JR30RK1A.

This Phillips #1 with four-fluted handle was included with ten six-fluted handle WF screwdrivers in my box buy today. I was recently schooled to recognize the circle-I stamp on Craftsman tools as representing Parker Mfg Co of Worcester MA. As four.cycle noted, “ca. 1939 - 1950…represents amber/blue handled screwdrivers,” so I was pleased as well to discern a “Phillips Lic 8” on the shank, attributed to Bridgeport Hdw Mfg Co.
So…do you suppose Parker sourced the business ends from BHMCo, and molded the handles to Sears’ specs? Now I have to look at my even earlier C’man screwdrivers to see if there are Phillips among them…Yes! also Lic 8 shank conjoined with circle-I handle. EBC9397C-B7E4-4997-A219-52BAD116F56F.jpeg

Thanks Jeff, I appreciate the help. I foresee the JR30 getting a lot of use. Like you mentioned, the handle is very comfortable.

I believe this is the Smith & Wesson rear sight adjustment tool that used to ship with their revolvers back when they came in a cardboard slip/box. I’ve gotten a couple along with the aforementioned item, and have also picked up/seen a few in the “free” box that often sits on the counter of small town gun shops.

Best regards,
John

Today was one of those days you drive by the lone guy with garage open and a sale sign with arrow pointing towards garage on
front lawn. He was cool, basically giving stuff away to unload for his move to Florida. He gave me a price of $75 for the Stihl
and told me he used it once in 2012 to cut some large limbs that fell after hurricane Sandy.

Funny story, I went to the Goodwill two days in a row. The first day I was looking at a nice stainless magnet knife rack. Thought it would be nice for tools if not the kitchen. Wasn’t sure if the price was good or not, sometimes their prices are really out of line. No internet in the store so I stepped out front.

I couldn’t have been standing outside more than a minute and was approached by an old cougar ******! She happened to be oh, I’d say 65 or 70 years of age :shocking:. Dressed in a nice sun dress. She walked up out of nowhere, this being in a plaza like you find most thrift stores.

I can’t remember the whole convo but it went something like this.

Her: Hi, are you taking a break?
Me: Yeah, at the Goodwill.
Her: (Swirling around me) Oh you are. What’s your name?
Me: is that the first question you ask someone?
Her: The first question I asked you was are you taking a break.
Me: I guess that’s true, you got me there.
Her: So what’s you name. Where ya from?
Me: :wtf:(seriously lady?) I’m the XYZ man (as I gestured at my uniform and company vehicle). Have a nice day (I walk toward my vehicle).
Her: You wouldn’t happen to be going by Walmart now would you?
Me: Uh, no, sorry I’m not going by Walmart.

I left completely forgetting about the knife rack.

Next day I went back (no old prostitutes in sight) and the rack was gone. I asked but it was sold. Only myself to blame for hesitating. I found these few items though.93D5FE72-9095-4D29-805D-284FF97F8DDD.jpeg

A neat Rock calendar from 1984 full of bands, a Lufkin tape measure, and a flintlock gun that I was quite surprised to find. The gun was only 5.99 but I’m not sure what it is. No marking whatsoever, not even a made in China. The hammer locks and it shoots like a toy, but heavy and too nice. Doesn’t look like it would fire anything. Ornate die cast and wood. Maybe a pirate costume gun, or cheap replica?

😄 guys
I'll have to keep that in mind Outlaw, in case of a possible trade some time. Or keep it to defend myself while thrift store shopping. 😆 Either way I figured nowhere would an item like that be both that price and pristine.

Blue cardboard or gold cardboard
Blue cardboard. They may have actually been included in the early blow molded plastic as well, but I cant say with any certainty. I’ve got a few of them and can attest that they fulfill their intended purpose.

Marty ***** for the Stihl steal!

No wheels? You're slacking.

Hopefully, this'll make up for my slacking, Lugz...

I bid on an industrial cleanout auction in Vermont, a 2-hr drive away from my house and paid market rates for a few more round metal objects for SWMBO's wheel yard art project. Today was pick-up day and so, being freshly retired from the military, I picked up a retiree neighbor and we road tripped up to pick up my winnings.

Pair of 1935 Ford Model A 16" wire wheels with ancient U.S. Royal tires

IMG_20211220_153102.jpg

Four 1968 Chevy Impala hubcaps plus a single 1961 hubcap for the same make/model

IMG_20211220_153232.jpg

Four wheel heavy duty plus shop-built moving dollies

IMG_20211220_153357.jpg

20" vintage farm wheel plus a 6" caster wheel
2 CAT-brand bulldozer drive wheels (heavy!)

IMG_20211220_153744.jpg

Four 54" metal farm implement wheels--these are neat in that they all have oval cross-section spokes

IMG_20211220_154151.jpgIMG_20211220_154438.jpg

James Way hay trolley (early "Pat Pending" design)
Large hand auger
Ridgid No 4S heavy duty pipe cutter

IMG_20211220_155000.jpg

Two more sets of loose hay lifting forks. I now have enough to make a small army of four legged monsters for Halloween decorations or fewer beasts with more legs each.

IMG_20211220_155222.jpg

Grand total for all my junk was $413 plus a 180-mile round trip. I admittedly paid up for the tall wheels, but still got them for less than half per wheel than what they normally go for around here. The trolley, the pipecutter and the hubcaps should bring enough on Ebay to reduce my outlay by quite a bit.

I’ve been looking for a 3/8” Bonney ratchet for the better part of a year to go with the 1/2”&1/4” ratchets I already have. As mentioned previously, I’ve seen one for sale about 6 weeks ago and missed it by trying to negotiate. Lesson learned, buy it when you see it.
I showed you all the gold one last week or so that I scored on eBay, then I stumbled across 2 more plus another 1/2” one. Well. I jumped on them too.

2 weeks ago I had no 3/8”, and now I have 3 of them and 2 in 1/2”. 91272489-9C04-40BB-9497-71AEC74F54FB.jpeg9791A102-0B27-4662-BDB6-1977B258F3C1.jpeg

This is likely my last haul of the year as there is nothing in the forecast well into the first week of next year.
I hemmed and hawed over the empty Western Auto Wizard box because the estate sale owner wanted $10 for it. I finally told him I needed to put some things in it for that price and he agreed when I showed him the extras.

I finally remembered to take a "before" picture, so here it is before and after an afternoon's work on it.

16 Dec 21-1.jpg 16 Dec 21-1d.jpg
16 Dec 21-1a.jpg16 Dec 21-1e.jpg

The box contained the H2952 1/2" drive, 25 piece set, but all I found were the speeder and the 15/16" socket. Even with all the original pieces, I hope no one ever paid the penciled in price!

16 Dec 21-1c.jpg

Closer shot of the sticker with the original set contents:

16 Dec 21-1b.jpg

The rest of the haul: Four S-K sockets, three disparate Mustang sockets and a 1/4d, 3/8" socket with just size and Chrome Vanadium--it's got some heft to it but is probably from off shore--the vast majority of tools at the sale were not US made. Oh, and the 8" x 5" Valero First Aid Box that failed to make the group shot.

16 Dec 21-1g.jpg 16 Dec 21-1hh.jpg

After putting the very few orphan Wizard pieces I have accumulated in the box, I realized I had another box just like it on the shelf--but this one from Wizard's manufacturer--Indestro.

OR Nice haul! What are you using to put the shine on that Wizard socket and speeder? Do you have any parts sources to fix the latch on the Wizard toolbox? Just asking, sadly I don't have any parts to help you.
