@designer485 Nice haul!!! More importantly, it's great that you (and your friend's family) made the effort to save those tools from the scrap yard or landfill, or some random dude.

Mike

Yes, indeed! The second "instant shop" in the first week of the year. Congratulations designer485!

Mike--While I understand and approve of the sentiment, remember that we're all "random dudes" to most people and this hobby would be horribly slow if we all depended on family and friends for our hauls!

Estate sale this mornings hour drive turned into hour and half in a blinding snowstorm in the dark. I kept going because I knew I'd probably be the only one dumb enough to show up..... #1 on the sign up sheet, only two others when they opened. Guy had a Mac box I cleaned out, some good stuff but most was taken by family (I'll get some pics when I sort it out). Spotted this Park toolbox in the dining room on the way to pay. Again, when I can get it sorted I'll post some better pics.

Bike guys really like park tools … apparently they are the snap on of bicycle tools. You could probably flip them?

Park tools are pretty good, but certainly not the best. The real good ones are made by Campagnolo or VAR. There were some great British tools, such as Cyclo, from when they had a massive in-country bicycle industry, but as so much has been offshored those companies have faded. By the way, Snap-on did brand ratchets and such for Schwinn, and also had their own line of bike tools later on called Wrench Force.

But you sure weren't kidding when you said a Park toolbox!

No offense even noted, much less taken. I was just thinking that many times we random dudes preserve and use old tools more diligently and caringly than the PO's family.

I don't think that Park toolbox is the same people as Park bike tools. But nice colocation.

But you probably already knew that.

Park boxes such as that one were built in Grant Park, IL about 50 miles south of Chicago.

When I saw this I couldn’t wait to pick it up! Sky Hook crane for a receiver hitch. Paid $125 for it, but these things are really expensive. All it needed was a new chain - $15 at the local bike store.
Nice snag on the skyhook!

I've got two, one mounted on their HD cart, and one mounted on a lathe for lifting heavy chucks, etc. Found both for bargains on Craigslist.

Don't forget Hozan and Unior in the list of "Better than Park". Especially Hozan.

Second set of photos, Kennedy 520B top and bottom Part 1 of 2; some before's and after's. This particular post is giving me fits over image loading, so parts are out of order.
I'm generally amazed how more common the old pattern makers crank legged gouges are (unusual to find in the wild) compared to cranked leg chisels (really rarely seen in the wild). I don't know if it is survivor bias, or the old pattern makers bought more gouges. And the set of spoon chisels is f@?!ing outstanding and pretty rare too

Not really a garage sale find.
I was looking for a small roll cab for the basement and came across this on Facebook marketplace. Listing had two pictures, one of the tool cabinet and one with an open drawer with some tools inside. So I go check out. Williams cabinet and all five drawers are full. 11 ratchets, 4 breaker bars, 21 extensions, at least 200 sockets, 60+ wrenches, 5 adjustable wrenches, a few screwdrivers, 3 pipe wrenches, nut drivers, Allen wrenches, tubing cutters, vice grips and a bunch of other stuff. 95% Craftsman stuff. All for $200. 9701767E-BE43-4E9A-BC74-444C2E511703.jpeg315783D0-B6E7-4FDD-9C87-9BF6ED822A80.jpeg8E6E2545-761F-4944-8724-525D194D700B.jpegDB183839-430A-45F8-9433-65FC7360C11D.jpegFCF55EC4-F438-4919-ACDE-8E2B39FA51BF.jpegE3183C61-CDBA-4182-8FA4-EA2F427BE52A.jpeg4C447BD7-C28B-49C8-9304-0845CE940733.jpeg

Traveling north from my Mom's place in Virginia and decided to make a stop in Lugz' home state territory to break up the drive. I found an estate sale in Woodbridge, just off the NJ turnpike and browsed the unheated garage workshop. The former owner was certainly more than a tinkerer and I found a few quality tools mixed in with the inexpensive imported stuff that populates most such spaces.

Lee electric door opener
Kreg clamp (I looked briefly for the jig that should have gone with it, but it may have already gone)
Import automatic wire stripper
Pair of center punches (always misplacing these...)
Big Proto 9812 flat screwdriver
Klein flat screwdriver (unmarked but almost as long as the Proto)
Crescent 2504 Phillips (sporting a Klein-inspired design, down to the "Cushion Grip" handle)
Tiny Stanley non-marking hammer
12" Wright 9412 adjustable wrench
6" Craftsman adjustable wrench
Channel lock 347 lineman pliers

Total damage: $15, and they even let me use the bathroom, so free potty break!

IMG_20220108_122412.jpg

Now, back to the highway. Big hand wave, Lugz!

Checking the usual sources yesterday there were no estate/garage sales of interest yesterday or this weekend. During a late check of CL this morning I spotted what looked like the wooden handle of a chisel sticking up out of a plastic box. At that time it was 8 minutes before to the sale opening and I was a 25 min drive away. Got there as soon as I could with the fog. Upon entering the garage I spotted the handle sticking up just like in the ad picture. My heart skipped a beat as I was hoping it would be another Stanley 720/750 for my in-progress set. It wasn't but no disappointment here. A Greenlee 1/2" gouge. Along with that I got a Pexto 3/4" bevel-edge chisel and a 1/2" unmarked (?) chisel with a "OVB" stamped on top. Maker to be determined. In another bucket, was a Stanley No. 4 type 16 (1933-1941) smoothing plane. It's pretty grungy and plenty of surface rust on the cutter and chipbreaker but will clean up to be a nice user I believe. I've also been hoping to come across a decent brace. There was a Pexto 5310 ratcheting brace in same bucket as the hand plane. To complete my haul, I found a phillips head screwdriver stamped "R & P Mfg Co" "Worcester-Chicago" "USA" on the ferrule. If anyone knows anything about R&P Mfg Co please let me know. I spent $7.

Then I picked up some blades for my 1956 Delta 14" bandsaw off CL. These had become obsolete to the previous owner when he put a riser block on his Jet BS. The 1/4" 6 TPI blade has never been used. The 3/4" 3 TPI blade was lightly used. The Timber Wolf blades sell at Woodcraft for $34 and $43, respectively. Cost me $10 for all three blades.

Update:

OVB was a brand of Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co of Chicago. Like Sears-Roebuck and Montgomery-Wards they were distributors more than manufacturers. Not sure who made the chisel. It is very similar to some of Stanley's Everlasting chisels I've seen. Here's a link to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co for those who have an interest.

R & P Mfg Co, which is Reed & Prince Mfg Co, is still in business today. They were started in 1886 in Worcester, MA. Cool to know.

Lots of great finds happening! Lugz, your slacking!

Big thanks to don for a tip that put me onto an estate sale a bit outside my normal range, and since there was nothing local, I went. I left a TON of other machinists and mechanics tools and three Thorsen tool boards built into a "tool cabinet". If I were deeper into Thorsen, I might have...

DE1 mhb cop Vise caps Victor Proto Walden RH cap, CF CM Deco.jpg

A 1966 Machinery's handbook -17th edition in very nice shape, Starrett inside mic set, copper vise jaw caps for a 5" vise, (no sign of the vise...), a Victor chipping hammer, Walden and Proto LA, 1/4" ratchets, replacement face for a 1-1/2" rawhide mallet, Craftsman router arbor that will likely go into the Porta-Shop box, the stubby Driver is a Deco, and is 9/32nds drive - my second; an unmarked center finder head for the small 4" or 6" scales, it takes a thin blade scale I found...

A good run.

Pre-Irwin era Marples by Record chisels set. Craigslist find. Like new. Missing 1 grey end cap. $80. Knew nothing about them, so looked around and saw the current "Marples" sets have "Irwin" stamped handles. Further research indicated that Irwin bought the Marples name from Record in the early 2000's and subsequently offshored production to China. Owner stated he has other sets and these were sitting, unused. Stamped "Sheffield, England," so date is pre-2004-ish? I expect you folks know better than I.

Hey now! I was actually very pleased with my 2nd haul of the year on Thursday ('Quality over quantity' as I always like to say...), which immediately got avalanched by diesel power's gigantic 'Woody' haul! But I am most definitely slacking today, and taking my son back to school tomorrow. :)
the stubby Driver is a Deco,
I love those. I have one and I know Don (d42jeep) does too.

I actually "purchased" this on the big auction site at the end of 2021 but didn't check the mailbox until yesterday. So I'm counting it as a 2022 pick. I'm trying to build a Stanley No. 750 chisel set. This 1/4" was a welcome addition in great shape and I still have all my extremities. If anyone has any spare No. 750s or 720s I'd be interested.
I was slow to notice, but from Woody the patternmaker's tools, I found these two chisels in addition to the pictured sets. Neither are marked "720" or "750" but the profile looks like similar to yours. Glad you retain all extremities; stay that way!

I have read that those Stanley chisels not marked as No. 720 or 750 were still in fact those models just unstamped. Being unstamped they are not as valuable upon resell. The 720 chisels are a tad over 6" of cutter while the 750 are appx 3-3/16 IIRC. If you're not going to keep those I may be interested. PM me if so. Nice chisels!

mbdslpwr I have that exact Marples chisel set down to even missing just one of the end caps. I can't see your handles but I assume they are marked "Marples" as well. I can't pass up chisels sets. Or grinders, workmates, pre-WWII Stanley hand planes, vintage American made vises, etc, etc, etc.

Outlaw Nice haul! I think we'd all like to hear from Don about sales in our neighborhoods too! You listening Don?!!!

Jeff I'm digging the tie clips! Very cool!

I had a number of planned stops today and was pleasantly surprised by them. The first stop was a garage sale/family estate sale. Fortunately, they had a fire going in the back by the barn, as it was quite cold this AM:
51808897733_b4d7aa0f16_c.jpg
Lectrolite DBE, Long C DBE, rusty Blue Point supreme, a handful of sockets, Facom wrench, steel gauge and pull chain. $2

The next stop had one of my least favorite things; toolboxes or cabinets sold as a whole. Nothing was pulled out, a lot of it was junk, and the price was way too high for what was there. But, I was able to talk to the people running it to allow me to separate one item:
51808777206_d16e7ec776_c.jpg
51807822342_ee58153555_c.jpg
Xcelite 1/4" socket set, and a Bell System Bridgeport I found in the garage. $11

The third stop was a bit out of my bailiwick, but I had a good feeling about it. And I was right!
51809509205_a1f44c09e3_c.jpg
Snap-on wrench roll filled with hand reamers, P&C driver user modified as a tack puller, MDF Craftsman ratchet, and a bunch of vintage nails. There was also a midsized box, full of sockets. Which, of course, the bottom fell out as soon as I picked it up. But, when I first looked it was full of good, US sockets.
51809506595_68134ba0fc_c.jpg
Top left is Craftsman V or BE, bottom left is Proto/Plomb/P&C, middle top is SK, middle bottom is Bonney, top right is Snap-on, and bottom right is misc-MAC, Herbrand, Blackhawk, Wizard, indestro, etc. Surprisingly, there were only a half-dozen foreign sockets. But, best of all, this was mixed in with:
51809510570_daef08d55a_c.jpg
A Snap-on no. 6. Rather beat up, I think I can get it back together. All of that ran me just under $20.

And finally, I stopped at my favorite used tool dealer, picking up the following:
51809141969_d5efc64787_c.jpg
A nice bicycle wrench and a Lowell ratchet.

After that, I headed home.

I recently scored on a batch of Snap on E dated items on the auction site that were actually priced in the realm of reality as opposed to most of the dreamers (gougers). I don’t mind paying a fair price, but I refuse to succumb to certain @$$ ****** prices to complete a set.

Finally arrived and am very happy. 3 of the 8 pieces I need for my collection and the rest can be for trade or begin building a second set.

Received was: Needed, TM5E, TM10E, TM14E, extras = TM60E. TM7E, TM9E, TM11E, TM12E.

Lets just say I got a deal on all of it compared to what is listed. 6E1D6124-1CF8-4EC3-AB4D-26CCDF7CAA14.jpeg

I took my wife to Fredericksburg TX for our first outing of the year. We missed their trade days because it's on the third week of each month. There are lots of antique and junk stores though and I found some goodies to bring home.

1957 Winchester catalog
20220108_151419.jpg
The guy had hundreds of them from the 50's to the 80's. Remington, Winchester, Savage, Marlin etc.. I would have got more but $12.95 each.

I also bought this swing out seat that I am going to mount on my welding table.
