Last Fall, I attended an estate sale of a hoarder who frequented garage sales, brought home the stuff, and just packed it randomly in his garage. After he died, his family was stuck with cleaning out the house. They had not sorted through the tools yet, so I told them I was interested in Plomb and P&C tools. The son promised me they would separate out the tools I was interested in.

Last night I noticed they were having another sale, so I showed up a half hour early. The son brought out a box of Plomb and P&C tools, and we settled on a price. The first photo is the wrenches.

There is a matched set from 7/16 to 1-3/16, less the 1-1/16 that was obviously made at the same time. All markings and finish are the same.

I think the #238 pliers are interesting. They were made before the "Name Knurl" era, and the "rope" knurls are both interesting and beautiful. Probably made in the late '30's.

The one shorty P&C DBE is interesting. No part number.'P&C Milwaukie.jpg
The body hammer is not marked LA or USA.

They may yet find more stuff in this mess, so there may be a follow-up in a few months!
Dang you ****! Some good stuff in there like the early pliers and the body hammer. The p&c dbe is so early they were not using part numbers at that time 😉

Friday.

I went to a variety of sales to the south of me, not driving too far due to gas prices. First stop was at a couple sisters dealing with their fathers estate. They listed vintage tools, but not much of interest, mostly old brace bits. I did find this though:
52088263055_277b66d679_b.jpg
52087766381_4276267222_b.jpg
Pretty beat up, missing a till, but having all the original brass hardware was a real plus. Also, it was incredibly cheap, considering that most of the ones I see have been repainted, hasp locks added, etc. A project, but what is new.

A sale nearby the first yielded this:
52089027939_34883039fe_b.jpg
a nice diamond ear SK box

After that I headed to the big event, a tool sale. Normally I would hit these types of things first, but there was scheduled to be another sale nearby that looked interesting, but didn't start until 11 am. Who does this? Anyway:
52087781668_2d9d79cf23_b.jpg
Well, the "big tool sale" wasn't that interesting. Mostly old hardware and whatnot, my guess is someone pulled the good tools out. So it goes. I did pick up the PC 4-way, Starrett scraper, a book on sound experiments from '20, and the wooden box below that:
52087783053_01826ff646_b.jpg
Which turned out to be a homemade tackle box, semi-full of vintage fishing gear:
52086726452_1a8d57239d_b.jpg
Old lures and spoons, pre-war hooks, early leaders, etc. I should be able to make back my money on that.

The other sale around those parts, that didn't start until 11AM, was strictly Harbor Frieght. And overpriced at that. But, there was another sale around the corner...

I have bought from this guy many times, look forward to his sales, as he has interesting stuff from all over the west, along with good prices. Not much I was interested in this time, mostly knives, but I did find this:
52086729822_7d64d44621_b.jpg
A pre-war Montgomery Wards/Mossberg .22, missing the bolt and magazine. Which is why I was able to get it for almost nothing. Now, I know that the parts to get it going again will be approximately 10X what I paid, it will never be in perfect condition, and so on. But, this is what projects are for, no? And there are no blued steel and walnut .22s available new anymore, so I think it is worth it to save this one. Plus, I had been looking for a basic .22 for a while now, and this will fit the bill nicely.

Wow you sure did good with that haul! Those 238 pliers look like they were made by Wilde. According to alloy artifacts they started making that style in 1926. I never knew Plomb sourced stuff from them before

spent about $30 attending abyssmal sales this week - $20 of which was on records & tapes.
ONE sale had quite a stockpile of what was originally quality items that - based upon the wide array of distinctly separate items (large stack of server & i.t. gear, another of n.i.b. kids instructional books, and yet another of mechanic tools, etc.) - must have come from storage lockers. unfortunately, all tools and everything in sets (e.g., micrometers, dial indicators, etc.) were damaged and/or incomplete. the rollaround toolboxes were beat and filthy. sale's "minder" had to pull owner from the house for all pricing, which we found was $10 and up for items such as individual 1/2" drive sockets. the rusty powermatic drill press on the open front porch would have required a hour to dig out but was a real deal at only $1k. prices and surly attitude led to everyone walking away empty-handed.
forecast is calling for several days of rain beginning this afternoon. most of his precious stock is out in the open and can't be covered. one doesn't need a crystal ball to see what's coming - a real shame (for him, anyway...).
on the other hand, it's a good day to caulk around the shop door frames...

“$0”. We were at a bag sale, and I just threw my stuff in my wife’s shopping bag. I have zero need for any of it.

I have enough Panavise stuff that I SHOULD have left everything... but I couldn’t...

I was good with three Panavises... it was more than I will ever need... well... now I have three and a half.

Numrich has some of the stuff I need, but not everything. I have some of the missing parts already, such as the rear peep sight, but the bolt is going to be the expensive part.

You guys are still knocking it out of the park!

Decent day, minimal tools, one no show, and the block sale was a dud except for a free box:

All Glass: Mostly stuff someone dug up. the glass cap sort of fits the wide mouth jar on the right, a couple have interesting writing. The shot glass if from the Lake Tahoe Hard Rock Cafe, and SWMBO claimed the blue star candle holder (before My eldest daughter was awake as she would also want it...)

BS-Old Glass.jpg

An Estate sale - The box was the first thing I picked up, the two shot glasses the last:

ES Box, Shot Glasses.jpg

And BOOKS! Lots O' Books! Mostly on Hunting and wildlife, and only one of the Deer books is specifically on whitetail! (Books on Muleys are not common, and on Blackball almost non-existent):

These were not, and the Vila book is autographed:

ES Vila carving.jpg

This one is also autographed:

ES Signed.jpg

The big books in stacks:
The Shooters Bible is from 57.

ES Books 1.jpg

The top one is by PO Ackley - Famed gun writer, and any books by Jack O'Connor books are Iconic.

ES Books 2.jpg

The One from Teddy, is an excerpt from one of his othe books.

ES Books 3.jpg

The Field dressing book is also an excerpt/Article

ES Books 4.jpg

All told only $11.50 for the Estate sale! Most were tagged .75C the box marked $3 - discounted to 2, the Shot glasses were tossed in free, most of the small books were free, and every other book or more was free! a couple were marked 2 or 3 bucks too, but Wow, they did all the discounting I could want!

And the last YS scored Some tools from an old Guy I have bought from many times - A buck each - SO impact swivels, and Brake tool - Indestro Stamped wrench, and an all steel small BP hammer.

I got to stay very local today and I’m calling it a good day. Picked up some clamps for $1 each, one is a Wilton.

Next was 2 XCelite bit sets and a Dayton 1/4” set in tin. Paid $5 for all 3.

My grandson picked his weekly yard sale grab for $2. A marble nightmare, but he’s having a blast with it.

Last stop was an old contractor’s shop. Not much I was interested in, but on my way out I spied some toolboxes behind where the sellers were sitting. I asked, they said yep, for sale. I rooted through a small one and pulled out a couple pieces and then began rooting through the larger one. After seeing enough good morsels I just asked “how much for this little pile and the whole box and contents?”. We were miles apart but after some serious haggling we settled on $45. I’ll have to show the rest in another post.

Sorting through the fasteners and scrap metal I managed to pull out some good stuff.

A Lisle hand impact. I needed one since I destroyed my old HF one a couple weeks ago.

First drawer purge netted mismatched wrenches, some small pipe wrenches, mini XCelite drivers, battery pliers and brake spring tool, hog ring pliers, and a really cool pair of scissors and sheath marked “Bell Systems”
82E07873-DCC1-429B-8B2A-7E800792E74E.jpeg
Next drawer was more NAPA wrenches, Snap on driver, SK bit driver, Klein pliers, etc.

7033FF17-A827-4E91-8E00-EE198D7FB584.jpeg

Next drawer was socket land, including Wright, long C Craftsman, Snap on, MAC, Mustang, Blackhawk, SK and others. The junk not pictured is in the scrap bin.
B5CF0727-659C-4059-AB76-2896DD48C758.jpeg
Still more, Barcalo, Wright, OTC, Snap on, Klein, Craftsman, NAPA, and that dang twisted nail trick.

EEBD7411-B393-48BB-BF10-8FBFF09981E3.jpeg
I ended up with a complete set of the NAPA metric wrenches in a roll with an extra 16mm kicker.

And a nearly complete set of Wright 3/8” sockets (missing 3/4).

Tonight's dog walk find, looks almost new, might have a season on it, sitting in the gutter, grass caked from where it was sitting in dried fresh cut a while ago, no sign of life from where I picked it up.
Carried it home and it fired up with fresh gas, the cutter heads tabs are pushed in and no string like they couldn't figure out how to get it off, I spent 10 seconds and it wouldn't come off, another day adventure.
We live in a disposable society, sad,
Might flip it as I don't need it or give it away, not a high end unit.

Some excellent scores fellas.

I went to a sale this morning. Two large storage units full of estate Items. Wife wouldn’t go. Mom came and waited in the car for me (a long time) while I dug through tools, and afterwards we went to a great Mexican lunch! Sorry, forgot food pics. :)

This is not my favorite score of the day, but it had to come home with me!

I was like what is that odd looking cabinet standing by that table? Oh dang! Tagged $20 Only.

Needs some tlc. The nice lady accepted $15.

My favorite score, no pics yet. An old, stout chest of drawers with a workbench top. Solid wood. Six drawers all built with rollers! Best part is it came painted already, even interior of drawers. Haggled down to $25 and I’m a happy camper with these two finds to go in my new shed.

Very slim pickings in S Lake Tahoe today. We went to several sales and mostly struck out. We checked out several TOOs and finally found a few items at the last one including the =V= Craftsman ratchet and socket. The small hose nozzle I picked up so Outlaw could see that he is a bad influence. A seller had the odd German Vise Grips and multi tool but she wasn’t interested in selling them so I took a couple pictures. I wasn’t sure what the multi tool was for.

tools today:

stanley items- square, doweling jig, spoke shave, 1/4 ratchet.
Dremel items, machinist angle block set, Ridgid saw
Armstrong combos, old Truecraft open end, Crescent and Irega adjustables, Japan 4 incher, Billings and Spencer #92
4 incher, Coes, a couple Snap-On, Craftsman, couple Utica, Braunsdorf Mueller curved open end, Starret punch, Ullman mirror, small Cornwell dbe, a Carvel Hall oyster knife that was in the tools (made me laugh due to recent thread), PowrKraft tape measure, a small souvenir knife from Yellowstone.

I was real excited to find the little Billings and Spencer but turns out it was abused and works only part way. Oh well, still a fun stop.

Thin pickings today, but they were spread over two counties. We’d made arrangements to meet up with my sister, BIL and niece, as she’s leaving to go to med school soon. Stopped at one sale in town, lots fishing and hunting etc, but only a few tools, grabbed the Atkins backsaw, 4” x 26” I think.

Then drove 40 miles south, and met up with the gang, dogs in tow, and walked a couple of miles along West Cliff drive, seeing lots of GS signs and a 2 ft plus (3’?) gopher snake, looking well fed. Made a quick stop at a Farmers Market, then stopped for a quick lunch and more talking.

IMG_20220521_172652.jpg

After lunch we hit a few more YS, low expectations for so late in the day. One sale had lots of tools, priced a bit on the high side. Dake #1 arbor press (2 ton) at $500, high enough to not tempt me, couple of MKE hole Hawg and another spade handle, Magnaflux, etc. I walked away with another saw, 3x blacksmith taps, and a JP Danielson water pump type plier, not great prices. Also grabbed an empty propane tank, and a splash retainer for my sloppy drinking avatar dog from another sale.

The best cash outlay price for the weekend was the fencing wire cutters, free, but I made two trips (didn’t get the address fast enough the first day) towards a deceased hoarders clean out free pile from FBMP, but all the good stuff had been scooped before I got there. Lots of sad, broken radios, printers and rusty stuff when I arrived. Heavy insulation on the grips, bit of rust, we’ll see how they clean up. No markings visible so far. Edit (HKP 1942 and US on top)

Not a killer weekend, but decent after very little tool joy for a few weekends. Gotta start saving up for the big flea trip in June with my buddies.

nice little Billings bicycle wrench there, 3bay.

Don, if you Google "wheel weight multi-tool" it looks like the design hasn't changed in decades.

I hadn't planned on going out today, but a CL ad for an "estate sale" popped up at about 2 pm, so I drove out to the south end where the family members were selling off their late father's stuff. He spent a lifetime building cabinets. Lots of machines. Lots of stuff. Nothing priced. I found a few items and had them piled up and one of the people pulled out their cell phone and looked up "pancake compressor" and then said "Well, they sell for about $160 new.... "
I went out to my truck and drove back home.

Found a nice Armstrong F-91 3/8" drive ratchet and an itsy bitsy teenie weenie 4" Proto adjustable.
The Proto is ground off...

Now, I have seen Plomb tools where the Plomb was ground off. I was told that it was done by Proto after the lawsuit.
Not surprising as they were still good usable tools
But...
The ground brand looks bad.

... I found a few items and had them piled up and one of the people ... said "Well, they sell for about $160 new.... "
I went out to my truck and drove back home.
I found a three Proto sockets at the flea market.
Nothing rare nor special.
How much?
The seller said $50 for the three. I looked them up on eBay he said, they sell for $17 each.
Thank you. Good luck with your sale.

Dang, nice grab on the crown top wall cabinet. Not nearly as common as the heritage badged one.

Plomb grind off’s where from the lawsuit and were often sold under the p&c brand because they were considered the inferior line under company structure, not physical characteristics. Proto grind offs where sold to employees due to some sort of defect or reason they didn’t pass quality inspection

I can't remember the last time I went to so many yardsales and bought so little.

I spent a total of $21, $1 on a motorcycle tank bag, and $20 on a little stack on toolbox. I offered $15 because there were a few interesting items buried inside. The guy said "no, but you can take some tools off of this table and put them in the box for $20". So I added a few hammer handles, and he had a handful of items and just threw them in.

The interesting items I was wanting, were the two Snap on ratchets, and 2 extensions. They are obviously black oxide, one is FOD so that is cool. No idea what they are worth, but both are in excellent shape. I think I did ok.

Found out when I got home, that there was a full set of drill bits, spade bits, a craftsman chisel, a nice set of dividers, and an antique Mac wood handled screwdrivers along with some junk tools.

I also got excited when I pulled a bag of sockets out that were 8 points and US Craftsman, unfortunately, they were two sets of the same 3 sizes. Oh well still better than no 8 point sockets.

0DBEAD2C-0457-4022-B3C9-90850D6049B3.jpegJake’s Flea this morning netted two Bonney ballpeins and (I think) a Germantown ballpein with a broken handle, plus a pitted but readable No3 steel screw PSW C-clamp, all for $6. I had my hands on a crowntop machinist chest with serious rust, but all the pieces for $20, but let it go. I circled back but the vendor had sold it for $25 to a guy who wanted it for his grandson. That’s better anyway. I’ve got a damaged one I’ve already pulled apart, and it is a chore. Still…
But there is a finite amount of space in my trunk, and I had a reason to reserve it.
Friday night, I carelessly flipped through CL, having had no time to GS for the past few weeks, and spotted a blurry, low-res red time capsule that had had its *** hanging out there for 27 days. I contacted the seller, who said he’d had it in a yard sale for two days. Guys looked it over, suspected it might be a Craftsman, but no one wanted to pony up the $60 asking price, despite all the tools in it. We made an appointment for today, and though I think there was room to negotiate, I am content having paid full price.
I present to you, the mid-century Bonney MB82:

Ditto! ^^^

I had a good day, even if no garage tools - and third day in a row for sales? -I'm usually lucky if ONE day had things that will draw me out these days...

I went back to the Books estate sale adn they had more books; as I walked up, my "cashier" from the day before told me she had put out more hunting books... and As I'm looking through the books again she came by, put her arm around my shoulders adn said 'anything you get, its half off!" - Sounded good as I had come back looking for a couple of over priced items! - And no it was not generally"Half off" day...

The books:

Books 2.jpg

Wire Book for my eldest daughter: Cook book could be home or camping:

Books 3.jpg

Last of the books adn some old smooth (Clay?) poker chips

Books 4.jpg

That last red covered book has "Souvenir of Redlands CA". sort of impressed inot the (Velvet on leather?) cover. and inside is a picture book of many houses and buildings in Redlands - Published in 1898 and 1903 by Fred C. Hoogstraat - Hoogstraat sold tourist curios and leather products from his business on Orange Street one block from the railroad depots. He decided to publish “Souvenir of Redlands” with extensive photographs to illustrate the homes and flora and fauna of California found in Redlands :

And in the back - Adverts! this thing is OLD - 3 digit phone numbers, most adds don't have any phone numbers, Many simply describe the location - no actual address:

Books Redlands 2.jpg

2 CI Frypans, one is a Griswold No. 8 the other an Erie, 7B (just slightly smaller than the 9) If I ID'ed it right, its late 1800's?

CI Griawold and Erie 7B.jpg

A B&H round wick lantern - not sure it came with a flame spreader? - and a Manning Bowman & Co. Copper teapot - coffee pot styled? It holds 1-1/2 cups so a good size for when its just me camping. She dropped the lamp to $7 and the pot to 2-1/2.

MB Pot B&H Lantern.jpg

A few Old xmas ornaments for the small tree we put up in the kitchen.

Ornaments.jpg

All told I spend $18.

And one other stop at a hoarders barn sale - He was pretty proud of his stuff, as I listened to him negotiate with another guy. Wanted $10 for these and we settled on $4, and he came close to me walking away...

The tin will get cleaned up re-painted and used a a small lantern case. The (Overhead Projector?) lens, not sure yet.

Oops need one more post...

Its flat on one side does that still fit that theory?

Edit: - A quick test - Maybe - it seems to have about a 6" focal plane for a beam, and it is 6" in diameter.

When I was in school, the overhead projectors had a 3-4” lens, not 6”, so gwiz might be correct.

My favorite find was this 1960's Hamms Starry Night animated beer sign for $12. It need some restoration to the outer case but it's complete with working movement. The twinkling scene graphics is in excellent condition. It'll be a fun project. These are pretty scarce.

Like new green Coleman lantern with funnel, spare mantle and full can of fuel for $5.

In the foreground is an original case for vintage HP 35/45 scientific calculators $2. I was hoping the calculator would be inside but no such luck.

Some misc. crappage for $1/ea.

Nice finds Dave! A buck on the Dr's Ear and nose light, and the Lantern with fuel for $5 is suckage - you got the fuel for 1/3 retail (soon to be 1/4 or less...) and the lanterns for free!

5438 1-3/16

There is a matched set from 7/16 to 1-3/16, less the 1-1/16 that was obviously made at the same time. All markings and finish are the same.

I think the #238 pliers are interesting. They were made before the "Name Knurl" era, and the "rope" knurls are both interesting and beautiful. Probably made in the late '30's.

They may yet find more stuff in this mess, so there may be a follow-up in a few months!
This is a door skin hammer. Very nice!!!
