I saw two sales close by yesterday on CL and decided to give them a shot. The first one had nothing of interest. On the way to the second one I stopped at an un-advertised sale and grabbed the KD Tools snap ring pliers and the two NOS disposable overalls for $5. I figured they could always come in handy for any garage project. I went to the second one advertised as an estate sale. The house was absolutely a hoarders house and was disgusting. Seemed like the kids were selling mom and dad's things after they died. I went right to the garage and it was mostly Chinese ****. The smelly guy running the garage section was throwing out crazy prices to other patrons. He wanted $40 for an old chinese air DA sander. I also had to listen to the story he was telling about how his cat pissed in his bed the night before and how appalled he was. Judging by the smell of him and the rest of the house this wasn't the first time. I then stumbled (literally) over the Littlestown No. 25 vise. It's in really nice condition but I didn't need another small vise and judging by his recent price quotes I left it and moved on. Went through the rest of the house and it was all junk sans photography equipment in a homemade dark room in the basement. I don't know anything about that stuff but if someone went there I'm sure they would do well. I went back outside and stumbled (not literally) on the Cleco Roto Torq Model PM-5 driver in the red case. I have never seen anything like this but judging from the military items I saw throughout the sale and the black stenciling on the outside of the case, I assume it was likely a military tool. It was marked $15 inside but the guy quickly yelled out $5 so I took it. I then asked about the vise and he said $7. I told him I had a $10 bill for him and he quickly accepted. The Cleco tool has Proto SAE sockets and USA bits. There is some light surface rust on the bits that will clean up. It also has a calibration sticker from 1981. Has anyone seen one of these?

Damn, not what I want to read Sunday morning !!! Outlaw, hope you get that taken care of.

Made a nice little haul in the heat today.
3 RR/house jacks of different sizes, 2 are froze up, I started lubing them up.
That's a red Justrite Safety Can and a blue Wheeling oil can. A wood level and a Plumb roofing/shingle ? hatchet and a nice older clamp on vice, no name on the vise.
Also picked up this small Kennedy toolbox. Haven't seen a small one like this before.
And a wood table for my wife to paint.

Outlaw, you win. Hands down. I think you just gave a whole new meaning to “self suckage”. I’ll be saying some prayers for everyone’s health. You, bmw, and the rest of the crew.

slow weekend... a 25 cent Dunlap adjustable... but in the 'left behind' category... A fellow was selling a Disston two man chainsaw for $400 that looked like a solid restoration candidate. It is Disston Mercury, maybe a model DA-211. I can get contact information if anyone is interested.

Also picked up this small Kennedy toolbox. Haven't seen a small one like this before.
It's from WWII. It carried the toolkit for the M5 and M6 versions of the Director, which was a very early Fire Direction Control system for AAA guns. I have a couple. One of them with full nomenclature markings. Due to their smaller size, but extremely well-built ruggedness, they were very popular as postwar carry boxes in civilian life.

EDIT: Click here, and see post #75 for two other examples, and #76 for a period manual figure. And click here to see the Wiki entry on the funny looking mechanical box our AAA gun crews were using to calculate the azimuth, elevation, and speed of enemy aircraft.

The Cleco is a torque screwdriver, just as the paperwork says. It should have a plastic cap over the end that covers the adjustable settings. I picked one up sometime, but not in the case and accessories.

Ok,
Holy **** Outlaw,
There needs to be a new badge of honor for Yard sale crazy.
"On ********** I discovered my hernia was the worst "Bubble I'd ever seen, and hard as a rick I carefully tucked it back inside and the pain subsided."
He sticks his intestine back inside his stomach & goes back out to yard sales!
Geesh!

Thanks for the well wishes guys, and yeah, I have a doc visit scheduled Wed with the "tell me if something earlier opens up" box checked.

I'm feeling pretty good today, the "wrung out" feeling of exhaustion is gone as of late last night. slept well too.

Why did I go back out? Good Q - not because I'm Ironman, but because when the pain was gone I was at loose ends completely and I felt the day was incomplete. (ever get a song stuck in your head? The solution is to listen ot the dang thing to the end. your brain is saying: I NEED this ... I needed that...). If I'd been hurting that would not have happened.

By the time I got home it was definitely nap time and and an hour helped a lot. the rest of he day was take it easy. I only got soem t]of the things put away.

Got three stops planned for today, adn will be leaving momentarily...

In the non-tools category, I thought some of you furniture folks and woodworkers would like to see this. Mrs. Lugz found it today, for free. It's a table. And a chair! A throne-like chair fit for Tom Bombadil hisself. Homemade, out of oak, if I had to guess by the carvings. That's a face with a wreath in the middle.

@Outlawmws Glad you're getting that hernia looked at. I had one when I was only 18 (not a fun summer between high school and college). I don't recall whether mesh was used (I think it was being discussed at the time). Whatever the surgeon did, it's lasted over 30 years.

I'm also much more careful if / when I lift heavy objects. When I was young, I was oblivious to proper lifting, and had a summer job working in a metal shop where heavy lifting and pulling things around was a constant part of the job.

Hope this helps.

Let me hand out a little praise and admonishment before moving on to yesterday's paltry find.

Davefr You **** for that sweet wooden chest!
Speaking of wood, Lugz ***** by association for Mrs. Lugz's free find--I wonder what the Antiques Roadshow would say about that convertible table.

Outlaw--nuf said, so I won't dog pile!

I hit two sales yesterday. Zilch at the second and all I found at the first were these two Starrett items. No blade to be seen for the square. It must be a newish model since it's the first I've seen with the Starrett name stamped anywhere on the head.
The 6-inch No. 604R is in great shape but the black paint inside the etchings has been removed--still a few remnants in a couple of the numbers.

I'll say it - Mrs Lugz ***** for finding that Table/Chair, for free!! I'd love to find one like that!

The middle one is (drum roll) another Meter stick! that's 2 vintage in two days (who will post #3?)

Yesterday Mrs No_Garage and I hit a list of several GS/ES targets.

At stop #2 the Mrs got herself several Channellock pliers (pictured), several pairs of scissors and I got an almost brand new 25' Ridgid 12 gauge extension cord - all for $12.00.

That cord sells for $55 currently at HD. I could see selling stuff you wouldn't use - but who doesn't need an extension cord?

Cheers

Jim

4 Long Klein hut drivers

A pair of aluminum clamps
And unusual to me is the Centauro (Spain) pliers and the smallest spud wrench I have seen.

The "Pointy thing" is a brake spring hook,

I like the small spud wrench and the nutbusters, -they sure copied CL! I wonder if they licenced it, or if all he patents had expired.?

All good finds!

DA211 saws were hardstarting, temperamental runners and 9hp asskickers if you could get it to a log. Always had carb problems. Here's 1 I got at a sale years back and barely got and kept it running. Shelf sitter now.

I've been very busy lately, and haven't had time to get to sales. Earlier in the month, I got a call from my favorite scrap man, and he was clearing an estate/bankruptcy. There were several interesting items for cheap, including a huge bead blast cabinet/dust collector for cheap. I already have one big enough for my needs, so I passed it up. I did find some items that I can use. $100.00 for everything:
Stool and Propane Cylinder.jpg
Craftsman stool and 1/2 full propane cylinder.
Bankruptcy 1.jpg
Sticky-back sanding board paper roll dispenser with two grits
Extra-long (21") Vaughn XL Super Bar
KD 850H piston ring compressor pliers and 850BVW band (2.952 - 3.267 or 75MM - 83MM) probably for VW's, but will fit my old Ford 2N tractor.
Battery terminal cleaner (like new, I pick these up if in good condition, since the male brush always deforms quickly)
Ten 3/8 NC Helicoils, an installer, and the proper tap drill bit
A neat old Bell System box, probably for splice terminals or connectors, since it has plenty of bins.
**Not Shown** a 12" x 39" piece of 3/4" steel plate that will be used to mount a jib crane in my shop

The inside of the Bell box:
Bell Box 4.jpgLast, but not least, a Baldor 662R 1/3hp, 6" bench grinder. It was covered with sawdust, and I have only wiped it off quickly with a damp rag. Runs smooth and quiet.

bmw picked up a nice Craftsman cabinet at an estate sale in my home town Saturday before last. I'm glad he did, since I couldn't get to the sale early. I did get to stop by on my way home from working, and found a few scraps that he left behind! $40.00 for all:
Estate 1.jpg
Proto 2120 bar
Unmarked Flathead Ford Valve Guide Retainer Puller Hook
"500" Flathead Ford Valve Remover Bar (identical to my Lectrolite 500 bar, so probably made for a reseller)
GTD No. 5 tap handle
Card No. 7 tap handle
OTC 7047 and 7048 wrenches for front suspension work 11/16 and 7/8
Sun VFT-1 vacuum and fuel pressure tester
NIckel Molybdenum DBE (Bridgeport Hardware) 1/2 x 9/16
P&C 2716 combo 1/2
MFD USA DOE 1/2 x 9/16
Hinsdale SP-1 Spark Plug Wrench 7/8"
Nicolson Vixen adjustable file holder with sharp file

Estate 2.jpg
Schrader spark plug tire pump, 18MM (I already have a 14MM, so this completes the set)
24" flex rule. Polychrome Corporation (lithographics) One side graduated from center!
36" flex rule (grind-off) 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, and 1/64 graduations
Long air blow gun (not OSHA approved, so it works well)

It was closing time, with 1/2 price day coming up the next morning. They were willing to deal!

Provincial, you **** for that grinder!

Here are a couple pics of things from last week, I haven't gotten around to laying out and photographing this weekend's finds.

This $5 SK box definitely falls into the category of "why do I do this to myself???". I bought it mostly for the little 1/4" Husky USA sockets, the ratchets and a good number of the sockets are Taiwan goodwill fodder. We'll see how much decent stuff comes out of here, it's all soaking now.

IMG_4155.jpg

Here's another $25 or so worth of stuff from the flea market. Definitely not a smoking deal as most of it came from a guy that knows I like Plomb and charges accordingly. The offset DBE up top is "Chrome Molybdenum", I can never remember if that's Indestro or what. Then there are some 1/4" SK extensions, Cman DBE I need for a set, Cornwell 5/8 combo, P&C 2814 DOE and an interesting P&C offset DOE with no other markings that I noticed. Below that are Plomb 1125 and 1120 DBEs, 1228 and 1220 combos, a Proto 8161-N DOE and the cleanest Proto driver of this vintage that I've found so far. Finally a Husky USA (I think) wrench and some interesting sockets, I was surprised that the Bonney CV and New Britain were both copper, maybe someone plated them?
IMG_4156.jpg

Next up is another set of stuff that came out of a garage sale. The elderly gentleman getting rid of his stuff was being helped out by a younger guy (son/nephew or something) and the whole time I was making my pile they were talking about all the "insulting" offers they'd been getting for their tools. When I finally went to settle up the guy didn't want to put a number on it so I offered $30, which is probably $10 more than I'd normally start with. I didn't want to insult him though! He accepted and while it's not a steal I felt it was a decent price.

Anyway here's the haul. First was a bunch of Proto sockets, a combination of impact 3/8 and normal 1/2. There are also a few P&C, some Plomb, and a few other randoms at bottom right. I'm speculating that maybe the socket tray is Duro? I'll show why I was thinking that on the next pic.

IMG_4157.jpg

Here's the next group: Long C hinge/breaker, Plomb and Proto 5449s, Proto 1210 and 1216 LA combos, P&C hinge, rat, and extension, Duro combos, Snap on driver, and a partial Duro 3/8 metric socket set with a very similar color to the larger unmarked tray in the pic above. On the left are SK and Proto extensions and another Husky USA combo.

IMG_4158.jpg

Finally, the last piece in this group is a partial 1/4 Challenger set, the box is in really nice condition and I'm hoping I can find the rest of the bits. The spinner handle seems a little suspect to me though, it's not marked and seems pretty cheap. I'll need to do a bit of digging to see what the spinners that came in these sets actually look like

You'll love the grinder. I picked mine up almost three years ago. I think it was $12 but I had to work on it to get it looking as good as yours does from the outset!

I love flea markets, garage sales, etc. This is my favorite thread.
However; in place of “you ****”, I often want to say “I hope you attend when I have a sale”.
How do you ever recoup your money from buying 90 year old ratchets/wrenches? Are you endlessly assembling sets to sell on eBay? Do individual tools sell that well on eBay? Can’t imagine there’s a market for 90 year old ratchets.
Some of you are just hoarders. That’s a topic for another post😜.

While that may be true, some of you are just voyeurs! Now if you really love FMs, GSs, etc., post some of your finds and we'll let you know "how much we hope you attend when we have a sale!"

And just remember:

On the way to another yard sale, this TOO yard sale sign had me do a u-turn & go a mile out of my way to a stop that had no other tools than this lonely box at the end of their driveway.
There was a lot of misc. in the bottom of the box: Craftsman screwdrivers, Petersons, & whatnot.
With a $25. price tag on the top, I could see a set of SK 1/2" sockets, ratchet, & breakerP1010001.JPG

A couple of the sockets were split, & a few were missing, but my singles bucket was able to fill out the set.
Sliding-T, Ratchet, 2 extensions, The breaker has the bar for the end hold. And has a 1/2 drive in the end. The 1/2 drive swivel has a detent that holds your socket in the straight position as you use the breaker as an 18" extension.
Speeder as well.P1010004.JPG
P1010003.JPG
A Utica Girl Scout Knife.
P1010006.JPG

Notice anything weird about the box...?
P1010007.JPGP1010008.JPG
Must of been a Friday afternoon or Monday morning box.
The rivets on the inside look factory.
Yep, they let it get out that way.....
