I found a couple of Sunday sales listed on Craigslist. I wasn’t optimistic but we found a few things. The first sale was in Pinole, CA. I grabbed the early Vise Grips and a lock set from a Craftsman cabinet. 18C51301-FD17-4671-8900-FBE6221DACD5.jpegA319ADA9-C75D-4231-8A0A-BDAFC1971BFB.jpeg
The second sale was in Vallejo and we found a few items and saw a great view of the Carquinez bridges.910E3FB5-7100-4D5F-8C96-9BD0A1E98D33.jpeg1930EAD4-7A7D-4340-AC46-10FE7D989922.jpeg

Looks like some sort of bore gauge, possibly for measuring tubing. I have one similar that I used to use to identify the rough caliber of a firearm barrel when I was examining firearms as an expert witness.
I agree. measure across the taper and its probably = to the Metric numbers (MM or CM...)

Nice photos Don.

I saw one of those same Vise-Grip today. I was tempted, but noticed a weld on the handle. As you alluded to in the other thread, the lever was probably bent. The one I saw has the lever straight down and then offset outward at the end. Earlier in the day I spotted a Vise-Grip with a bolt and nut in place of one of the rivets.

Didn’t take any photos yet but I went to two fleas today. There was one nice deal of the day on some Williams. A semi-regular vendor had a shoe box of misc. tools, and I spotted a nice 1/4 breaker bar that I thought was Williams, which it was. Less than a foot away I see a baggie of what looked like no name 1/4” import sockets. I assumed it was a cheap 1/4 round head ratchet in the bag, but the knurled handle looked darn familiar. It was a Williams M-52! Seller tells me $3 for the whole bag. :bounce: I asked how much for the breaker bar, and he says $3 including that! That deal somehow slipped past all the vulture vendors who gobble up the good ratchets to resell (or never sell, with their prices).I had to brag a little to one such vendor. He goes, “1/4”? You found gold!”.

Here is my FBMP pick up, only score for the last few weeks.. A buddy of mine knows I’m a sucker for old tool chests and boxes, alerted me to it. Guy selling it had removed a couple of tasty pieces, and was flipping it forward. It was a reasonable price. Simple plywood box, nifty lock and 4 keys, and someone obviously added features to the box over the years. There were still some fun tools left, including a Shinwa SS adjustable bevel, just to follow a theme (and an out of focus image). The selling point was the nifty tag on top, pointing out the previous owner was a shipwright. The seller had the previous owners name, so if he shares it, I may try to dig a bit into the PO.

A few non-sequitur tools in there as well, as he was trying to sweeten the deal for the guy before me who flaked out. (2 rusty hatchets not pictured) He also tossed in a giant Cincinnati Tools wooden screw clamp, forgot to get a picture, but 16" jaw length, metal screws.

The papers in the top previously wrapped up a couple of wood saws, 1975 date on the papers, he left them to help with the possible retirement date or passing date. There was also a 3-1/4" L & IJ White slick, which is why he bought the box in the first place.

Included is a Corsair block plane, (meh), Diamalloy nippers, Walden Hamerench, center head for a combo square (hardened) in blue, Millers Falls Brace, gun cleaning kit, and other goodies.

See the whole gallery here. (Apologies for the flashlight pictures, I forgot to get the whole thing pix during daylight)

Will add it to the toolbox thread later, with more details.

Now that bad weather is here and having to rely on estate sales things have been quite slow for any sales with the brand hand tools I am typically looking for. Most of the sales right now seem to be lady and household item types sales and if a sale does have significant tools most of the tools seem (but not always!) to be HF, Craftsman and the like. Nothing wrong with Craftsman but because they are so prevalent if needed I can often pick them up much cheaper during good weather at private sales. That being said I often find at professional estates that have quite a bit of Craftsman tools then folks of course recognize the name and often gobble them up and are also distracted from and sometimes leaving good unknown to them stuff for me to peruse.

Case in point, this weekend pro estate sale with quite a bit of hand tools of cheaper brands + Craftsman. Guys picking through a few paper box tops of single wrenches gobbling up the Craftsman so wait my turn and I pick up a ratcheting combo wrench that I don't really need but I noticed very lightly on the wrench the model number starts of BOE so my spidey senses said "ruh roh" so I gather all them up and look closely and they say Blue Point on them but because of so much tool box rash you can barely make out the brand. So a set of Blue Point SAE reversible ratcheting comb wrenches but missing the 3/8 which I couldn't find anywhere........oh well......and the 9/16 was free wheeling so since they are easy to take apart I disassembled it and cleaned it out and a little Super Lube later as good as new. Lots of tool box rash but all work fine now. Total spent $12..........as they say even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile

We are now officially in the Doldrums, that time period between Thanksgiving and the start of the sunshine. So we, or at least me, are reduced to the few marginal garage sales, small swap meets, and the Restore. So, here is last Saturdays finds from four Restores and three garage sales:
52532330615_5f0104d99c_c.jpg
two finger groove boxes from one GS; Vlcheck DOE, <SK> DBE, Williams angle, Lectrolite and Select Combo's, and a small c-clamp from the Restore; (2) Vlcheck DOE's, Armstrong and Snap-on combo's, Williamsn socket and Magna tip stubby from the last GS. All of that for $7.

I delivered that newspaper when I was a boy. Took over the route from my brother. 70 some houses daily, 100+ on Sundays. Every newspaper boy knows the worst part was the collecting!

Or dogs when trying to collect. I could heave the paper far enough to outrun that shepherd, but couldn't get my $$ easily.

Wind chill made it colder than a witch's *** this morning, but as the regglers know, I like the winter flea market season because it cuts down the vendors and buyers to the ******** only, which makes for a more proficient trip (Lugz 2022_52). Came home with a beautiful though incomplete toy truck (1930's Wynadotte Searchlight!), interesting shears from 1938, and some doodads and trinkets with familial, professional, and geographical relevance.

I did have an excruciating LEFT-BEHIND!

A vendor wanted $125 for this Air Corps case. As soon as I asked him the price and he followed the number with, "it's from WWII," I knew it was hopeless. I tried to reason with him. Politely. Everything from WWII isn't rare or in demand or worth its weight in cash, and the condition is terrible. The personal artwork is splendid, of course. It helps the piece get over its condition. And I told him that. But we were starting from just too far apart, and even though I prepared him for me making an offer that I considered very fair, and that he would take as a low ball, I knew it was going to turn into one of those exchanges where he was going to get loud and insulting, and it did. Really nice piece, though.

Pretty cool that it has the Napier Field graphic. Dothan is at the bottom of our state, right before you enter Florida.

I hate those conversations. Especially with a HR recruiter negotiating salary (coming out of a job that's been grossly underpaying you)...

Picked these two old heavy duty Craftsman power tools up from my neighbor who was cleaning out his garage. They were his father's tools. Not sure what year they're from, but they both have the Craftsman 'crown' logo on them. I plugged them in and they work just fine. Cost was FREE. I don't really need them, but I can't see them going into the dump.

Great finds, guys!

I wanted to make a post about my best find for 2022, but I needed to load lots of photos. So I started a separate post under "Vintage Tool Discussion" forum. Take a look at it, if you get a chance. And then let me know if I should have posted here on the Garage Sale forum. Thanks!

Lugz, it was all about the artwork. Vendor valued that more than the case....

Those drills are pretty terrible. They can hurt you pretty easily.

The pistol grip drill is/was an important tool for residential electrician (maybe even the most used tool of the residential wireman on a rough in). The evolution goes from those wrist breakers towards modern one’s with good clutches.

I don't disagree, but those generally had a place for a pipe to thread in for leverage or to rest against an immovable object.

Hit a half-decent Thursday sale, followed up with a visit to a thrift store and one of my regulare Restores.

The bag of US lamp sockets, Stanley vise, Millers Falls and Goodell Pratt push drills, circular tape measure, and Pagoda lamp all came from the estate sale, along with a couple books. The Restore yielded the roller skate wheels (for a project), another Goodell Pratt drill, long flat blade, gentleman's saw and small nail puller.

the Thomas Mann and Omar Khayyam where from the ES, while the Waugh was from the thrift store.

Otts and sots for $12. The winner probably is 1924 Sager-Chemical Axe (Dayton style?) The ice tongs are great for hanging things off of I-beams. Any idea on the wrench on the left.

Only two estate sales showing any tools so we hit both of them. The first was in Martinez, CA. Not much left but I found a few items. The most interesting to me was the rusty Wizard visegrips. I picked up the BMW DOE for my neighbor. 5ADD2E52-C435-499B-B20B-C38B28AAAFD5.jpeg797083E4-B6D3-4903-871C-C76BF5ECF96F.jpeg601C9457-20AE-439F-9CC9-B5539EB51E59.jpeg
The next estate sale was in Concord, CA. It was put on by a company known for being expensive but I was pleasantly surprised that the prices were very reasonable. I’m always happy to find some Snap-on tools, particularly the vacuum grip longnoses. I think the Williams adjustable will clean up. The small dykes are Diamalloy and the other longnoses are Kraeuter. 6E529C3D-E459-4975-9DAC-992D7C929452.jpeg368D43CF-DE75-4D1B-AAAF-1CF91ED64BE8.jpegECC360D9-50AB-4D2D-99C2-FC0DF61EEE3A.jpegB3392DAF-CC8A-4D52-8473-2CBD25FDBD50.jpeg50279EF6-3741-4FCD-BD82-FBBD59CD8B8E.jpeg
