2022 Garage Sale Thread

I haven't had time to properly go through this and catalog, but for being in central Texas I felt good about this score. Somehow, a farm auction came across my nose and $70 and 160 miles (round trip) later I ended up with this.

Plomb 9980 box, 1/2 pebble breaker, 3/4 drive pebble breaker, 3/4 pebble ratchet, 1/2 pebble period sockets, 3/4 pebble period sockets, some pebble wrenches, some other brand wrenches, Snap-On 3/4 sliding tee. I originally bought to resale...but the Plomb is growing on me. Almost never find this stuff out here, much less 3/4 drive.

I recently was able to save a bunch of milling cutters from the scrap man. Over two hundred cutters, including a set of large gear cutters. I am keeping all the ones with a mounting hole 1" or smaller, as that is as large as my milling machine can handle. I am in the process of finding a home for the remaining 154 cutters. My hope is that they will be used somewhere that either teaches young people how to operate the old "manual" metalworking machines, or a club that will use them to repair/restore/maintain old equipment.

I picked this up yesterday. An auction item that stated "old toolbox with tools and copper tubing"
Sometimes I find treasures in things like this.
Today I got copper tubing and a rusty Park toolbox.
Apparently, the PO had put all his broken and rusted solid tools in one box, in about 3" of dirt and debri.
There maybe something of value after I derust a few things.

Late Breaking Host Voting News!! ​

As of 10pm (CST) this evening (6 Dec 22) a nominee exercised his right to decline the honor of his nomination. Since I was unable to modify the poll once voting had started I called upon the Super Mod, The Cobbler, for assistance. He was able to change the lineup but was forced to reset all tallies to zero. There were 14 votes cast at the time, so those voters will need to re-vote.

Let me preempt the well-deserved colorful comments by saying no law suits will be entertained and no recounts will be performed.

Been pretty slow but a couple finds from the Sunday flea market. The Foredom set was only $5. New Donegan Optivisor was $10. The Lufkin folding rule was $3. These old fashioned folding rules are sure better for measuring inside dimensions compared to tape measures.

I wanted to vote for the guy that had the original Craftsman advertising artwork and the guy that got the skid steer. I tried but couldn't figure out who they were!

Is there a list of greatest hits or do we have to go from memory, mines not the best.


I read on my phone and I'll be dammed if I can figure out how to even see signatures. I looked in the settings and found no joy.

I think there should be a lot more votes then 14 maybe others are having the same problems I'm having.

That is definitely **** worthy Davefr. Foredom tools are as good as it gets and you pay through the nose for them.

My Foredom was a steal at <$100, you definitely stole that if it turns. I got some new rebuild parts for mine cheap from Foredom directly. If you get extra magnifiers for your Optivisor, get glass, they are better visibility.

...the seasons best picker. We are limited by GJ's polling feature to ten (10) choices. Since we therefore cannot list everyone who received a You ****, we narrow the field to the ten members who received the most *****. It doesn't matter if they were awarded a single **** for 100 different items or 100 ***** for a single item--the ten guys with the highest count are in the running for the season's best picker, i.e., Picker of the Year.

This leads directly to your next statement (I wanted to vote for the guy that had the ***). oak_park picked up the Craftsman advertising art in late October and Bobcat753 reported a free excavator in late July. While neither amassed enough ***** to be in the final group, Bobcat753 came close--so close, in fact, that had you elected to award him a You **** at the time he reported his fantastic find, that one additional award would have put him in the poll. Moral of the story: Post a You **** for a score you are impressed with at the time you read it so you don't forget about it later.

Is there a list of greatest hits or do we have to go from memory, mines not the best. There's not, but I sympathize about the memory. Mine's not what it used to be either. As thread host, I could never remember all the You **** awards if I didn't log them in a little spreadsheet as members awarded each one. I'm certainly not suggesting you or anyone else should do the same, just letting you know that's how I easily found the two members who you mentioned. You can also use the "Search" feature--limiting the search to this thread--from a laptop. I have no idea if or how you can search from a phone. This brings us to a real limitation on using the phone--the lack of visibility of signature blocks.

The only workaround I can figure is for me to make sure I post at least once on each page and place the links in the body of my post--as I did above in post #5,087. Of course you can also use the "Search" feature for "2022 Garage Sale Thread". The first two hits will be the 2022 Picker of the Year poll and the 2023 Host poll (be sure to vote in each one!)

The Lufkin folding rule was $3. These old fashioned folding rules are sure better for measuring inside dimensions compared to tape measures.

My dad carried a folding rule like that daily on his jobsites as a form carpenter. I used to slide the brass rule open and write our last name in the groove. I'll have to look and see how many I may have stashed away.

And I'm sure this has been mentioned before but for inside measurements a lot of time I'll **** a 6'' or 12" blade from a combo square to one side and measure back to it with my tape,and add the two together.

Found this early metal angle flashlight by USALITE last week. It does not have any military markings but appears identical to the TL-122 issued in early WW2. It is made from a combination of brass, steel, and cast zinc parts from what I can tell. Photos below after some light cleaning. It still works well.

Found a couple of good deals, I thought anyway on Marketplace.
3 hours south of me was a Jet 4x6 metal bandsaw, cracked motor. But still worked fine. $50 I had nothing to do and thought it was still worth the drive.
Then I made the mistake to keep Marketplace shopping. Found a guy 1 hr. East wanting to sell an old industrial cast iron equipment table for $200 or he was going to take it to the scrapyard. I offered $100 because… why not?? He accepted. Had some things attached to it but couldn’t make it out in the picture. No big deal.
He messaged me back and said he had an old drill press that needed to go too or same trip to scrap yard. He wanted $250. I couldn’t make out any info on his pics on it. Told him I really didn’t need one but I’d give him $150 to keep it out of scrapyard. Once again he accepted.
Drill turned out to be a Walker Turner light - Heavyweight drill press. Heavy as hell and with a bunch of add ons that I’ve already removed. I’ll have to replace the motor with a single phase as well.
The stuff on the table turned. Out to be an Allenair Indexing Rotary Table. Hoping I can clean it and confirm it works, then flip it to maybe pay for my unnecessary traveling and money wasting tool addiction.
Also, a pic of the drill press belt guard, and miscellaneous uknowns that were included with it all.

I have an 80s / plastic / BSA version of that somewhere in the basement. Undoubtedly with 80s batteries still inside...

I swear, I've been trying to cut back!

But, I've pulled a like-new ($7k+) air compressor and a like-new ($2k+) milling machine out of work (both were headed to scrap); but those pale in comparison to a free excavator!!!

Very nice find and very good ID, tym. You are spot on. "USALITE" was the TM of the U.S. Electrical Mfg Co, in NY, NY and they were the largest supplier and included notices in ads throughout the war about limited commercial supplies. They made really cool metal swivel heads in that same era, too. My late war TL-122-D (the only WWII right angles with filters in the extended cap) is a USALITE. I posted a concise summary of TL-122 production and suppliers in a very cool LED conversion tutorial thread that @Outlawmws made, here.

@oak_park would've gotten my vote, too, but, the Host makes the rules, and to be fair, it was far less democratic in 2018, the year I created this whole POY monster. Believe it or not, I unilaterally picked the 10 nominees I felt were most deserving! Hey, it was my prize and I wasn't leaving all of it up to the riff raff! (Why, yes, I do have totalitarian tendencies.)

Small haul (Lugz 2022_54) at the flea today included a BHM Radio-Electric set wrench, an empty but very nice condition very early X-Acto set box, a butcher saw (vintage, forget the name just now), 6" slip joints for no other reason than I have never seen the brand before ("Oak Leaf"), Plomb DBE, TBD multi-tool with amber handle with some odd text on it, and a WWII Schollhorn sapper tool.

Not sure what the brass legs are but they are heavy built and are stamped Parker Hardware NY.

They are brackets to hold a boot rail in front of a bar, where you rest your feet when you "belly up to the bar". I have some just like them, they were hanging in my shop when I moved in. It took me months to figure it out. I will look and see if mine are the same mfg.
