What a great haul. Definitely a big YOU **** on your first post in the garage sale thread. Congratulations!

Only one sale listed in South Tahoe today and there was no mention of tools but off we went anyway. I was able to grab a decent Stanley brace, a cool Forsberg coping saw with the Whale logo and a wood bottom plane I knew nothing about but took a chance that someone might want it.IMG_9418.jpegIMG_9419.jpegIMG_9420.jpegIMG_9414.jpegIMG_4133.pngIMG_9412.jpegIMG_9413.jpegIMG_9411.jpeg

Jeep owners seek out one particular size Bristol.

Bob’s set shows a couple of sizes were put to the test.

YMMV
Had a 73 CJ5 and I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo, don't remember seeing anything like that. Never did much beyond normal maintenance to either though. Coughed out a drive shaft after forgetting to shift out of 4 wd on the CJ once..lol

and for my news, No yard sales were found even listed...
I hit 5 sales today, a total waste of gas and time, only tool I saw was a Stilson Trustworthy. My wife hit one over the hill, saw far more tools, but none worth the trouble of trying to buy remotely.

He's referring to wartime Willy MB and Ford GPW models. One "Fluted Socket Head Wrench", P/N T84J-100, was issued in every on-board toolkit, and in my direct experience, maybe the most important one! It was used to adjust the shift forks at the top of the T84 transmission, which was notorious for jamming up. The driver would remove the cover around the stick shift to access them. I have done it more times than I would've liked. It measured 2-1/2" (long leg) x 7/8" (short leg) x 5/16" diameter. There is some dispute about the flutes. Wartime factory drawings show only the last 7/32" of the business end fluted with the rest of the wrench smooth round stock. Fully-fluted wrenches show up in 1949. But wartime spec wrenches are like hen's teeth and some of the fully-fluted jobbies show up in boxes with markings that could be construed as wartime.

Friday, I went out and hit the sales. I had six on my list, but only made it to the first five. And the first two were duds, but at the third I picked up these items:
52981095303_901bff1f89_c.jpg
This candelabra will go into my fireplace, as we live in an older home, we have an open fireplace that gets rather smokey in the house, and my wife hates that. A friend recommended this to me, and when I first tried it out it worked perfectly; you get the feeling of a fire, along with more heat than you expected, but none of the smoke. And we all know that wives love candles...
I also got this:
52981015175_beb1dfd118_c.jpg
And you will be pardoned for thinking it is a make-up case. But, no:
52980031942_cd06970664_c.jpg
It is a vintage watch staking set, basically a tiny arbor press with attachments:
52981018455_a38dd54c0d_c.jpg
It needs a very good cleaning, but I couldn't pass it up. Not at $25!

The fourth stop ad showed a lot of newer tools, and it was in the area of the sale I really wanted to get too, as it would help my patented BMWRD0 Sale Timing System (get there around an hour after the sale opens to avoid lines and parking a mile away disasters). But while most of the tools were newer, there was a lot of mid-level inspection items. and I found these two things at an insanely low price (mostly as they had no idea what they were):
52981007865_c2e434efbc_c.jpg
Enco bench block in the box, and an unmarked 10x9 granite surface plate. $8 for both of these!

To Be Continued...

The fifth stop. Oh boy. First, I am glad I didn't try to get there at opening, as it was a madhouse apparently. And, from the ad, I can see why: https://www.estatesales.net/OR/Portland/97229/3697242
This place was packed to the gills with the type of things that flea marketers, junk dealers, antique stallers, and others of our type go nuts for. Here is my haul:
52980439503_3dbc03b3bc_c.jpg
Heritage socket box, book on HF (1927), partial RTEC socket set, Klein flush cutters, unmarked ell handle, Lectrolite DBE, Williams combo, Wright socket box, SK Tools holiday tool roll, Williams brace, Walden & Snap on socketry, TW DBE, vintage BB's, tap sets, and an adjustable I have never seen before:
52980129089_840acb9575_c.jpg
Also, the SK roll is two sided, and here is the other side:
52980358575_175db13966_c.jpg
And finally, I found the Heritage socket case out back behind the garage, upside down in a bucket. I wasn't sure about it at first, and then I opened it:
52980363085_3b896d26e4_c.jpg
While the set is incomplete, what is there has the original BLO coating still on it! And, the missing pieces of the RTEC set were in it!
52980363480_0e714a76ce_c.jpg

All of that was only $25. I was plumb tuckered after an hour of searching, and never even made it into the main part of the house. I am going to try to make it back on Sunday, as that is half-price day, and I just know there is going to be more to uncover.

This morning I went to a sale. On the way back I was stopping for breakfast and realized I missed a call from my uncle. Wtf? He never calls me, so I was concerned it was something very serious.

I call him back and went like this:

Me: Hey, what goin’ on?

Him (angrily): “Get your @%$” over here now. My buddy’s cleaning out a garage. His friend, an old timer‘s moving back to England and can’t bring his tools with him.

Me (keeping my cool) : Really? I was just about to go visit Mom.

Him: I just sold 8 huge wood planes for 40 bucks. The guy tried to haggle me down more but I told him that’s the lowest I’ll go.
He’s closing the sale in an hour so hurry up!

Me: did you advertise this sale?

Him: No not really.

Me: Where you guys at?

Him: In your neighborhood! @#$&&:);/= Street.

Me: shoot! I’ll head over.

Well, I ended up with 3 boxes of tools And several vises for 50 bucks. I’m glad they called me but his friend was trashing things like a maniac the whole time I was there, so I had to move quick. Another dude came and bought all the wood power tools while there.

Got this homemade workbench with Record wood vise, cost me an additional $10. Uncle’s friend refused to sell me just the vise because it’s a cleanout. How could I say no to that deal though, and I can use the bench. My uncle drove it over to my house on his tailgate as he had a truckload already.

nice vise., quick clamp feature too!

Got another Reed pipe vise a few weeks ago for $3. Haven't worked on it yet beyond breaking the screw loose. Have 3 now, waiting for something to use them for. Also third one I've found listed as primitive decor, first one being attached to a charcuterie board.
PXL_20230617_181641940.jpg
Also a Snap On 3/8 socket, pliers(K16 Motor Spec Duluth USA), and cutters(only marking is the stamping in inside of pivot point and what looks like a user marking on the arm)today for $1.50. Didn't recognize the pliers brand and the cutters I haven't seen before but they look similar to my wire cutters for 20-30 gauge wire but a lot larger. Currently trying to figure out what they're for and I'll find info on the pliers brand later.

Wilton Power Arm $50. This one is huge compared to the ones normally seen with baby bullets. It's about 12" high and very heavy:

P1100755.JPG

Size compared to Baby Bullet Power Arm:
P1100760.jpg

1.5 HP Century Elec. Motor $10.

P1100725.jpg

Tektronix 2445B Oscilloscope + accessories. Seller said it's yours for $12 but it doesn't work. It took about $5 worth of components from Digikey and it works great. Nearly mint condition.

Beemer ***** for his $25 haul. That sale was a real trip down memory lane. I had that Batman figure and the G.I. Joe diving suit.

@Doonsberry Welcome to the thread. Nice rat collection, but I don't think it works to add up their ages cumulatively like you might add up the experience of a group of mechanics or lawyers. Nice try, though.

Photos from the cleanout sale. I haven’t looked at all the names. I went through a couple tool boxes and didn’t find much. A Snap-On screwdriver, some handcuffs! My uncle had the sockets and ratchets box already. I grabbed a crate full of clamps, the hidden vises which were unbolted and buried on a corner of a bench.

The “Crown” chisels are very nice, my uncle handed me those. Can’t believe nobody wanted them. Found a few planes but would have liked to see the large plane collection that was sold. An antique Stratton Brothers level, a cheap knife, some weathered binoculars, johnson level, several Buck Brother and other chisels and gouges, transit with box, brass hardware in jars.

I didn’t look at the brace maker. Just grabbed it and the bits too. They and most chisels were in a drawer no one touched.

The other wood vise is Taiwan made and looks similar to the Record. The red vise is also Taiwan but I don’t see a brand. Really neat swivel jaws though.

When the power tools were being moved I found a few Kennedy halves on top of something and gave them to the owner. They whole thing was really hectic. It was hard to look while things were being tossed in the trash at the same time. I don’t know how someone has a 2 hour estate sale. :willy_nilThe owner came home and hung with us a little bit. Although I love finding cool stuff, it’s hard to watch someone basically abandon everything. I’m also quite surprised my uncle was there helping as this isn’t really his scene. It was cool that he called me.

Holy Crud Is all I can say today, you guys are collectively killing it -Head is splitting or I'd be handing out USUCKS...

Slow day for me despite a busy FM and a lot of yard sales, (most were a "neighborhood sale"

HS FM was first stop:

Lufkin 24" Brass folding rule, 16 ths on one side , eighths on the other. $2

The small "Yankee" type driver is geometric Craftsman, so Long C era, the other is another with that ferrule, I like, in a size I don't have $5 for both

The buttons were from a former photographer (second gen for that no less) at the race track I spent years at. Both in my active years. and races I attended. Wish I could have found some of the cars/people I knew besides Lloyd, Who I pitted for off and on. He was killed in a crash at Calistoga.

FM Lufkin CM driver Buttons.jpg

The Yard sales:

$5 for he taper cutter, Semi Behive mini driver, a Mac wood handled stubby, and the Square nial tie pin

$2 for the near NOS awl, I'm pretty sure this is an older one -Patent granted 1936, the paperwork seems to be 1950

I was at an estate sale like that a year or so ago. Not two hours, but damn near, and they were just moving stuff out. I think the property had been sold already, and they didn't know what to do with everything. It started as a cash only sale, but after a couple hours they were just telling people to take anything and everything. Kinda sad, but at the same time, people were getting things and not throwing them away.

The guy who bought the power tools filled a trailer. They were pushing a lot of stuff on him, and it was too cheap to pass up, including 17 bar clamps and wood clamps!

Yeah, at that give away sale, I ended up with a Delta table saw, a steam engine, antique clock and radio, along with a bunch of other things. Better than going to the dump!

Wow, lots going on. I’ll have to take a minute to unpack all the posts.

In the meantime, I had a cool day, but one of you might hate me in a bit.

Estate sale this morning by a family. Heard about this one a month ago and couldn’t get there, but they set out more stuff this weekend. A buddy called me yesterday to give me a heads up.

Plumb hatchet, and drilling hammers and a Craftsman hammer, all appear to have original handles.
IMG_4440.jpegIMG_4441.jpeg

From the top left, 3 Snap on pieces, SK, andSK Wayne swivel socket, MAC socket combo, Herbrand mini pliers (alinc), SK socket combo, and 2 Snap on drivers. Got all this and the previous ones for $20

IMG_4442.jpeg

Then went to a flea market. One tool guy I get a lot from was there and got the following from him. Bonney combos, and a Blackhawk combo for a set, and I found this Blue Point 12oz ball peen at another vendor. $8 for this lot.

IMG_4444.jpeg

Now…this is gonna leave a mark. While I was looking through combos at my tool guy, my Mrs. started laughing at the other end of his tables. She said, “Hey baby, didn’t you just send one of your GJ buddies a bunch of Herbrand stuff?”.

“Yes” was my reply. She picked up this tin and walked it over to me. I just shook my head, reached into my pocket and grabbed cash and handed it the guy.

This is proof that when you quit looking for something, it shows up. I sent alinc a couple empty Herbrand tins I had been trying to find pieces of for years. Not a week later I find this. Unbelievable. Yes alinc, this, and the mini pliers are in your care package pile.

IMG_4445.jpeg
IMG_4446.jpeg

Its complete too, and it kills me because I collect 1/4” drive sets.

Raineman, what did you pay for the Herbrand set? It looks like it is in amazing condition. That is my favorite kind of vintage.

You did great all around.
