Thanks. I looks like almost everything I touched was rusted in some form.
Can’t believe the Williams wrench score you got there! Sounds like a great sale.
Have you seen the speeder with the red/orange knob before? I’ve owned a bunch with the metal knob and seen many more, but not the plastic knob. It also has the W on the end.
The sale was alright but most of the stuff was overpriced in my opinion especially when I have enough of most of the stuff already. That said, I always want some decent stuff to at least look at then see if it is worth it. Sale was in Youngstown/Lewiston and luckily I picked that sale to hit because there was a big hand tool sale in West Seneca at the same time but no photo's of either sale so taking your chances. West Seneca sale posted photo's just after opening and looked like a whole lot of cheap stuff so looks like I chose right.

Nope can't say I have ever seen William's speeder with a plastic knob plus the W on the end indicating it was original, that's a new one to me.

Edit: what do you know, looks like one on Fleabay right now.

I think that is for cooking pasta, not deep frying. Most are very open mesh.
You are probably right...

242B Coleman lantern. Not too interested in single mantles but it was the last day and going to be trashed. If I can figure out how to ship, I might sell it.

Talk to Outlaw about shipping lanterns.

Haha!

The main deal is:
First drain it completely (USPS and other shippers frown on shipping them with even a little fuel...)
Second pack the globe separately in a strong container -Like a coffee can or a hard section of heavy cardboard tube, well padded, Original, or even US made Pyrex globes are not cheap anymore.

Other than than it pack well so being dropped from 4 ft won't hurt anything.

If you do decide to sell it, let me know. I just bought a 220E today (I'll get pictures later, I swear) in great shape that works perfectly and I'd be interested in having a single mantle to play around with. Yet another thing to collect/play with, yeesh. :ROFLMAO:

Flyer- I saw that one for sale when I was looking too. I spotted them in the 1943 catalog. Apparently the short version speeder came in plastic at that time as well. I wonder if it was war related, or just trying new materials.

I was also wondering if war related and trying minimize steel or maybe just experimenting with plastics. Perhaps Durez Plastics in NT may have been pushing them to look into using plastics, who knows.

Well, the physical trophies are. I'm not at all sure that it's that cut and dry about any of the content. This post I am writing right now, any post, or any thread. But what I meant was, GJ is his business. Literally. One of his livelihoods. He owns the site. It's not my place to make a Wiki page for one thread when there's not even a Wiki page for the site itself. Granted, it's one of the most well-known and popular threads, I have always been a major purveyor of it, and I started the whole Picker of the Year thing, but it's a big site, and it's not my place to do something like that. As I said, it was just a lark. Anyway, have you seen how much is involved in Wiki content creation?

Have at it! Looks like you'll have help from @Old Radar and @mikeinri.
Lugz affecting a sudden shyness on a literary creation?! Mr "Rust Never Sleeps" himself?! Well, I for one think it's a grand idea for Garage Journal, this thread and the "Picky" to have their own Wiki entry. Share your text, if you're still reluctant, and we can crowd-share the work. I'm in.

Had a pretty good day today.

I had been watching a local online auction with a bunch of vises. The Reeds and 4" and larger Wilton Bullets went for big money, I managed to snag these two 3" swivels for less than $50 each.

IMG-4180.jpg

Next I went to a garage that I had picked before. Sweet elderly widow occasionally calls me to come dig through her late husband's things. When I go, I end up doing some household chores for her, have a cup of coffee, and just talk to her for a while. Her husband and I shared a lot of the same interests, and I think it makes her happy to sell his stuff to a guy who likes old Ford and old tools. She almost always tries to give things to me, but I make sure and pay her fairly. She has no children, and no other family in this town. I check on her often.

Today, I trimmed a tree, and put new batteries in her security camera. We talked about her time as a school secretary in the 50s, and I went to digging.

I have been in this garage several times, and never noticed this cabinet until today. Its in beautiful shape, with the exception of the fact that George apparently lacked Post-It notes, so he wrote numbers and names all over this cabinet. Common sense tells me to clean it up, but I think I will hang it in the shop exactly how it is.

For some reason, its easier to post the images first, then fill in the details later.

And yeah, I **** for that one...and I like it!

That is Hella funny, Smoke.

There is a small regional difference between Hecka and Hella. one is Bay Area, the other the Sac area. Having lived in both, I try to ignore it and stick to the coastal surf speak of my youth, Brah.

Not war related. Rubber was also a controlled resource, and I have a dozen wartime Williams doorknob speeders caked in cosmolene. All steel.
I'm in.
I'm not sure how comparing myself to Frank Abagnale, Jr. and Seth Dillon and calling my own fake Wiki page a work of evil freaking genius can be considered shy, but to re-clarify, my reluctance was primarily one of propriety. I will claim the Picky! :) But it's not my site. And it's not my thread.

I will reveal that I talked to Ryan about it. I wasn't asking his permission to create a Wiki page, but I did ask him about rights out of curiosity. And as I suspected and alluded to with @mikeinri, it's far more grey than black and white. He explained it how the lawyers have explained it to him: users retain all copyright for content - outside of GJ, but our content is licensed to him and GJ when it's hosted on GJ. In other words, there is no Garage Sale thread without GJ, and there is no GJ Picker of the Year without GJ. TOS posted here.

Having said all that, I don't think creating an actual Wiki page would breach that agreement. Most of the content seems 3rd party to me. The page on Reddit was not created by Reddit, for example. Selling GJ Garage Sale thread Picker of the Year t-shirts on eBay would. Just to make a distinction.

I did look at Wiki once before, for a different reason, and seemed impenetrable to me. Complex and burdensome. Not talking about the amount of time it would take to simply paste some text and images. Talking about the process.

Here is a primer on creating a Wiki page.

Here is the lead...
"Before starting a new article, please review Wikipedia's notability requirements. In short, the topic of an article must have already been the subject of publication in reliable, secondary, entirely independent sources that treat the topic in substantive detail, such as books, newspapers, magazines, peer-reviewed scholarly journals and websites that meet the same requirements as reputable print-based sources. Information on Wikipedia must be verifiable; if no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, then it should not have a separate article. Please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject.

An Article Wizard is available to help you create an article through the Articles for Creation process, where it will be reviewed and considered for publication. Please note that the backlog is long (currently, there are 4,093 pending submissions; it often takes months) and articles are reviewed in no specific order. The ability to create articles directly in the mainspace is restricted to editors with some experience."

Reading that and the rest of the guidance puts it quickly back into 'just a lark' category for me. As popular as the thread is, for all the right reasons - bunch of guys collecting old guy stuff and having a blast talking about it, and as irreverently as my page may capture its end of season un-serious award fun, I don't think it would make their cut for notability.

EDIT:

But if you or anyone else really wants to try, here is my text (the links were just blue, not real)...

The Garage Journal Picker of the Year Award, also known as the Picky, is a trophy for merit in scrounging, whether rare collectibles or major scores. It is presented annually by the reigning host of the Garage Sale thread in recognition of excellence as assessed by the thread’s voting membership. Nominations are strictly at the discretion of the host and there is a new host every year. The GJ Picker of the Year Award is regarded by many as the most prestigious and coveted award in the garage sale, estate sale, flea market, swap meet, and second-hand junk shop hunting hobbies in the United States and worldwide. The Picky trophy, constructed by the current host, changes in style and shape every year, and is never revealed until it is awarded in late December.

History
The first GJ Picker of the Year award was presented on December 18, 2018, to @tin medic by @Private Lugnutz with an audience of 34 people. The trophy was a gold-plated mechanical fingers tool mounted on a puller with a 1-inch drive socket base. There was no party, after party, or after party party and the trophy is rumored to have fallen apart during shipping. To date there have been no disqualifications, refusals of acceptance, accusations of bias, allegations of lack of diversity, *****-slapping incidents or other embarrassing controversies, because, well, because the thread is maintained by normal human beings.

Full list of previous awards

...and here are the images.

He was agreeing with someone else. Bad form? Maybe. Technically, though, not an infraction. We may need to convene a special emergency meeting of the rules committee. I would suggest Nantucket, but TEAMS probably more economical. 10 o'clock. You bring the virtual beer.

Here is my tiny score from yesterday, made extra painful by being stuck behind two Estate Sailors who bought lots, then put a bunch back when she priced everything, no box deals. Swear I spent 20 minutes checking out while second from the front.

Top is a pair of 7-1/2” scissors marked Stiletto and Baker Hamilton Pacific, a 1/2” Irwin Speedbor, a Moody, Prov. R.I. U.S.A. dual ended machinist scriber, and a 3/8” Irwin Speedbor. Not shown was a NIB Shaeffer fine nib school quality fountain pen in red. Loaded an ink cartridge, and tossed it into the mix on the desk I use for work.

PXL_20230715_205338663-X3.jpg

Moody was a new company to me, but of course they are on 4.c’s list. Their chief item seen at ITCL is a bunch of kits encased in a plastic dome. I have two, one with taps, another with eyeglass screwdrivers, both from Craftsman, but I now believe Moody probably supplied them. The even had a patent.

Todays free haul. Drill and sawzall work. I got early access to a family friends yard sale, all I had to do is shovel up a dead possum.

You ****! Free is always my favorite price, even if you have to work for it!

Wife hit one of the local thrift stores and scored a Ronco rotisserie oven for $8…they do an amazing pork roast…won’t have to borrow one anymore :ROFLMAO:

I'd say your wife *****, but that doesn't quite sound right...

Nothing was looking great this weekend but spied a poorly advertised sale today mentioning Rigid and Williams tools. First and only one there first thing this morning. Sale ended up being basically a small family run estate sale of hand tools from a gentleman who had worked at the local Dupont plant. Picked up a bunch of NOS JH Williams adjustable wrenches and passed on a bunch of Rigid pipe wrenches and William's SAE socket sets. Family had no idea why he had so many NOS/unused tools from I'm assuming his days at the plant.

Even without posting a price, You ****!

I missed that fine point, and was wondering why no one else had called him on it.

I was busy today with an in town festival my wife/son wanted to go to and also finishing up some brake repair on my wifes Honda. But after we got our share of the festival I went with my wife to 3 sales. 2 actual sales and a barn/chicken coop pick which didn't produce anything but was fun...

Sale 1- scored a craftsman amber handle hack saw, various long c era sockets, a few pieces of plomb/proto and this uncommon Merit (sears) Ford connecting rod wrench. Listed in the 1942 craftsman catalog..

Also scored this carter car"bure"ter socket and a this cool ford wrench which I haven't researched at all yet.

Sale # 2 was pretty overpriced and not much of interest but I did find this metal pan for $3 for shop use and 3 of these military issue knifes. I bought them with the hopes that I can use them to motivate my young son to learn to cut up his own food :)

Early hub cap wrench. I have a bunch of knockoffs on my Mossberg board.

Looks like a Forsberg. Or Atkins.
Thanks for the 411 on both those items. I can't believe I paid only $7 for everything in that picture! It was a good day and my wife has found some more sales in the countryside she wants to hit since our church isn't having a church service today. Hopefully I'll find some good things today.

Just following up on a couple of highlights from my picks last weekend. I have sold both of those automotive club plaques on the big auction site for $100 each not including shipping. My wife was skeptical of the purchase at $10 but now she is singing a different tune :) And in regards to to the decorative items/knick nacks /tools we have been bringing home the past month. We are approaching the 1k mark. I don't say this to brag but I would just encourage those of you who have thought about doing this in the past to take a little bit of a risk! It can really pay off.

Hit an advertised sale today on my way to HF to pick up a couple shelving units to help sort the disarray,I currently have in the garage and basement. The last thing I really needed was more stuff...but all very nice condition Craftsman =v=,-v- sockets, metric wrenches and sockets, knives from Boker, Camillius and ,Holub. I left behind the shallow 1/2" set, drag link sockets, sliding T-bar,etc. Figuring someone behind me may get some joy. Prices were ,dare I say cheap. I'm pretty happy with the lot.

What I have tried to do is hit the estate sales that interest me(tools, etc) do my shopping on the items I know(tools) and them go back though the house and garage looking at items that may not be as familiar/known to me and see what I can educate myself on and buy to flip. Silverware, maybe china , quilts, etc.

Will post up a full accounting later, but this was from Thurs. Never heard of the company before. The grey switch on the side controls ratcheting direction, male square on the end of the bits.

First found the long white-gray line of bits, and figured I would adapt them somehow, then found the case with everything else. Anyone have more info?

If you don't get crazy with it. I never wanted to look at flipping as a business, because it would take the joy out of the looking, for me. But I have been spending other people's money for years at flea markets, just from an occasional thing or two I wasn't keeping. But the reserve is dwindling closer to the red. I quit eBay last year. I have to find a good big fall swap meet/car show type event to offload a bunch of stuff.
Interesting stuff at this sale.
Does that Reed Prince take different bits? Funny looking double ferrule.

I picked up this Coleman 220E at the nearby ReStore yesterday for $15. Date code is 7/61, so it has me beat by 20 years. It has the two piece fuel cap with the single side vent hole. It works great too. I replaced the mantles, gave it a light cleaning and it lights and burns perfectly. The added flint striker is really nice. The only piece I'll need to replace is the fuel cap gasket, I have a HNBR o-ring in there temporarily. That clamp in the last picture was on the lantern, the wire piece goes around the base shielding and the c-clamp lets you mount it to a railing/fence. I'm sure some collector would go nuts to have that piece. :ROFLMAO:

Yesterday was Hot, Hot, Hot, with not much in the way of interesting sales. But, however, I did make a foray into Provincials area for a good looking sale posted at the last minute. When they list the brand of car that the former owner liked, it is usually worth your while.

Two Duro/Indestro combos for a roll I need to fill, a Proto LA black oxide combo that will need the crayon removed, a Snap-on extension, and the pick of the litter, a Bog ratchet from '37. I also broke my own rules (never buy anything you don't know where you are gonna put) and picked this up:

Delta Homecraft table saw jointer combo, with all the proper accessories such as original motor, guard, fence, mitre, and most importantly and the reason I got it, the stand. The later is going to go under my drill press, I am going to keep the table saw, and the jointer will go to a good home. All of that was $25.

After that, I stopped by a thrift store, and picked up the following:

two Talbot Mundy's that I didn't have. Very happy about that.

Ever other sale I hit was a bust, or too far away in the heat.

Hit the flea and a couple sales today, turned out to be "big wrench, little wrench" day.

Here's the stuff from the flea. $7 for the Husky box and 1/4" sockets, below that are Plomb and Circle H sockets, an SK 5/16 combo and a couple small Williams wrenches. Those were $3

I paid quite a bit for the other Plomb stuff including the big DBE, pebble combo, 18" 1/2 ext, and the deep socket. $15.

The P&C DBE, Proto and SK rats, and Indestro DBE came from the same vendor as the bigger Plomb stuff and it was $18.

Finally there's a Ward's Lakeside DBE that I picked up for a buck and an Indestro hex rat for a buck as well.

This batch of stuff came from an estate sale on half price day and it was $10. The big wrench is a Bonaloy 1 5/16 and then there are Blue Point, Plomb, Williams, P&C, and finally the tiny Armstrong 3/16-7/32 DOE. Sockets should be all pretty self explanatory, I don't know why I constantly buy these things as it just creates one more set project that I'll never finish!

Oh, I did remember one question on the sockets, is the "Chrome Alloy" at the bottom middle an SK? Or something else?
