- The postcard on top is my second Good Vibes story. Vendor I am friendly with in the good way some vendors and some collectors get to know each other and favor each other. North Jersey guy. If he has something really valuable, I will tell him what it is, what it's worth, and tell him to get it off his dollar table. And if he has sonnething he thinks I'd like he'll keep it in his truck until I get there. Today he says he has something for me. I'm thinking a tool. I'm looking through his stuff and he's sitting on his tailgate thumbing through a bunch of old postcards. "Here," he says, and hands me that vintage West Point card. My son is a graduate. "How much you want for it?" I said. "Keep it," he says. I look him in the eye and we shake hands hard and no other words need pass between us.

Very, very cool. Any way to date that postcard?

Yes. It's from 1935. I have an extensive postcard collection. Nat Geo's, too. There ARE things I will not share here because it's not really garage related, even in our large liberal relaxed definition. :)

If you're interested, the "C.T. Art-Colortone" on the back refers to Curt Teich, a major supplier. The number in the lower right-hand corner is a production number. There are several good Curt Teich guides online that are very precise.

Here is my haul from 4 Friday sales, only two of which delivered. Was on the fence about running over the hill, work was kicking my ****, but then my SIL asked if he could borrow some digging tools, and my daughter had the car. Into the truck the tools went, and as soon as my last meeting, off I went. Fortunately I stopped to get cash. First sale which looked the most promising, was a bust, but got to hear people chat who had lived in their house, and the neighborhood, for 40-50 years. Both were a few years younger than I, talking of block parties, who they played with growing up, mutual kids they knew, quite nostalgic. All the interesting tools were gone tho. Next was an estate sale, some good tempting pix, but on a tiny property, so had to wait in the hot sun to get in.couple of slow checkouts didn’t help. He was quoting silly high prices on common hand tools, but he’s always been flakey on pricing tools. Almost left, then a coworker I know cruised by, didn’t want to wait, so I felt justified being there. 😉.

The garage had space to walk around, but some woman trapped me in a corner talking about trying to find a manual online for an air compressor she wanted to buy. (She later dropped a tote full of stuff in the main garage entry) Guy felt sorry for me, flagged my vise as sold, and carried it to the front. Another woman spent the entire time I was there poking thru an art supply closet. Not sure what I missed

Next sale was a parking nightmare, two different vehicles taking two curb spaces each, other side was no parking, etc. parked around the block, and walked thru a parking lot. Silly prices on some stuff, but averaged out OK.

Last sale was “part garage, part estate sale”, was really neither, but it had a nice chocolate Labrador.

The haul, left to right, Bridgeport Phillips, Osborne 120 tack puller, hemostats, couple of pocket knives, including a big Boker, two matching cast three step pulleys w 1/2 & 5/8” bore, some Bessey clamp angle guides, and a Craftsman 391.5181 vise with the little chevrons on the front. Made in Japan, BF stamping on the base . The 391 hints at Adjustable Clamp Co, the BF to Daido. Weighs in at 36# for a 5” vise.
PXL_20230721_214703496-X3.jpg

Not a great day, but provided a nice lull til another work shitstorm came up while driving home. And I got some late tacos too.

Haven't had much free time lately to yard sale. Got this this morning for a few bucks. One of those things I won't use very often, but comes in handy once in awhile.

Small haul today could have done better.. but got the husband instead of the wife today at the swap meet.. she usually charges me .50 cents for small wrench’s he was about 2 a piece so I buried all the proto stuff at the bottom and I’ll try again next time.. did end up with 13/16 7/8 proto it’s real skinny. A 1/2 proto challenger got it to fill the void in my proto set ( lost my 1/2 and 15/16 ) so that was good enough for now and 3 really 2 1/2 plvmb ignition wrenchs. 6.00 for all not great but not badC0C8DBCA-1253-4881-B4DD-F1A4CD8ADCBF.jpeg

There was a Coldpoint fridge like someone was talking about a few pages back at that sale that was chalked full of paint and solvents that sold for $2, would have bought it but it would have been a pain to get it out and I didn’t have anywhere to put it.

Yup it has the orange plastic handle, did you find any info about it, I didn’t even know it was one until I got home, I thought it was painted metal.

I have one of those plastic handled Williams speeder also, but I found it years ago.

Anyway, I hit three sales today, all of which looked good on paper, all of which failed to hit the mark.

Ran into Provincial at the first stop, which had a lot of larger machines in the ad, many of which were marked NFS when I got there. Not that I am in the market for a full size horizontal mill, but still. I did pick up the Allen rack and the Bondus drivers for a couple bucks. The second stop had zero of interest to me when I actually got to look at the stuff up close, while the third scheduled stop yeilded the cloth insulated wire, Plomb obstruction screw driver, and a Craftsman saw blade. I stopped at the Restore in between, and picked up the Estwing hammer, Stanley cabinet driver, and VA tap.

I had a couple more stops to check out, but between todays heat and the paucity of finds, I headed towards home, and made a stop at the used bookstore.

A nice edition (illustrated!) of the Dickens, I have a South Bend, the shop book is a reprint by Lindsey Pubs, and the Shooting book is a reprint of a book from 1883. Best of all is I had enough trade credit to cover all of this! Anyway, I think I am out a little over $10 for everything.

Picked this little box up today at a local flea mall. I'm sure I overpaid ($20) but I've never seen one and wanted it for display.

I thought the skinny belt models were all made by King Seeley. I bought mine new in 1973 and it has the squared-off style castings. I didn't think the offshore-made models had anything but standard belts and to get down to 250 RPM, it needs a step-down idler.
** Your drill press with the squared corner castings is made by Emerson Electric. They took over making the last of the prior rounded edges from King Seeley**

Well today was another one for the books. Mrs Smokeshow or MRSSS as we can call her wanted to hit a few quick sales before heading home to start weekend chores. Who was I to argue. We set off to the nearby town where the first sale we hit had good prices but no real tools to speak of and really not much for either of us. My wife has learned recently about the google scan function on her phone and also about ebay sold listings so now she really dives into the hunt :). She's been watching some youtube female picker videos where they go to garage sales, goodwill, etc and hit up decorative items or dishes and pottery so she was on high alert. We didn't find much at the first stop so it was onto the last stop which really didn't look promising in photos.

We arrived at said second stop and it was 4 siblings cleaning out their parents home after their parents went into a care home. We walked up and they said- "we hope you like to dig, everything is fair game" .... kinda interesting I thought and yes I'm a digger. I always bring gloves with me to sales so I can look through drawers, boxes, under cabinets, etc. When we arrived they told us to make a pile and then we could negotiate once done. We picked for an hour and found quite a bit of items. My wife and I found a few things for ourselves but mostly it's to resell. I wont post a ton of photos because I don't want to bog the thread down with non garage/ tool items but I did find a quite a bit of tools.

When we were ready to check out I asked how much and the kids told us no charge, just take it all. I couldn't believe it. I would have taken more had I known it was going to be free but we got some winners as you will see below.

-Crazy out door garden metal bench. I really didn't want to take it but my wife insisted. Now I'm really glad we did. Apparently this "peacock" style bench is a french antique and we have found some listed for over $1k and some sold for over 1k.... Yes, $1k , not $100. Thats absolutely insane.

- bunch of craftsman blow molded cases and tools. These are a little knew for my taste but they are in good shape!

-ryobi band saw with manual

-whole bin of misc craftsman tools, porter cable power tools

- ladder jacks

-parker vise with some damage but still serviceable

-skillsaw worm drive

- Coleman 75th anniversary cooler in box plus a second cooler! Box is dated 1975. I can't believe it. It also has the jug (not pictured). Hopefully outlaw would be proud even though it's probably a little new for him :). They are super dusty. The other filthy cooler may clean up well but I cant believe I found 2 in the same spot.

-black and decker workmate

- oh, that huge white twisted lamp....apparently it's some sort of highly sought after MCM lamp that goes for crazy amounts.

That 75th anniversary in the box complete is a nice find, and the steel belted version is popular due to nostalgia. For use I use modern 5 and 6 day coolers, you jsut can't keep up with ice otherwise. I have one small vintage cooler an for a day picnic, it is doable but you probably won't have ice at the end of a hot day...

I had a decent tool day today! I had to really dig at 2 estate sale clean-outs and at the second I nearly left them behind after their idiotic "pricing" (over the top pricing with NO justification, then "But its 50% off") It was family run... it came to $29 and I told them they wanted them more than I did. -asked what I thought they were worth and I told her I could go $20. she accepted.

I did leave behind a Green common Lantern at each sale, 220's both and both the most recent 220's, nothing special, and at ES #2 (above) it was also Stupid $$... I also left behind a cool old sewing machine that I liked, but again, stupid $$.

What I did bring home:

regular YS for $1 - CM spot mirror, and new Std 5WR Vice Grips ;

Y1 VG CM mirror.jpg

Yeah I totally understand the nicety of a modern cooler. I have a pretty nice vintage Montgomery Wards that I use when ever we go on trips that is a good one. I want to keep these colemans but dont really need them so they will probably go to a collector who wants them.

We had a fun visit with Humber yesterday and this morning and was able to give him a little tour of the area and a short ride in my fishing boat. He left me with a King **** DBE and a Corsair coping saw.
IMG_9743.jpegIMG_9744.jpegIMG_9745.jpeg
After Humber headed out we decided to hit some local sales I found on Craigslist. Here are our finds at various sales.
First sale in Meyers, CA produced a 15” Crescent wrench, a 1-1/4” S-K Wayne combo and an early pointed A Craftsman DBE along with some vise grips.IMG_9751.jpeg
At the second sale we found some clamps and some cabin art.IMG_9748.jpegIMG_9747.jpeg
The third sale was a stinky tool hoard in a house. IMG_9759.jpeg
The next sale was one I had hit before but I found a 1945 mess kit that I hadn’t seen the first time.IMG_9764.jpeg
IMG_9765.jpeg
The final sale was a return to last week‘s sale where I found my new Craftsman roller. FullSizeRender.jpeg
Have a safe trip back to NZ, Peter. It was great to see you again!

Stereo day.
Akai GX 747 DBX 10.5" reel-to-reel w/original take-up, 5x 10.5" reels and 5x 7" reels of tape.
Been chasing one of these for some time and narrowly missed one a few years ago (it walked out the door as I walked in) so arrived early and stood in line.
Also picked up a DBX 228 expander, Teac V95RX cassette deck and a Yamaha EQ630.
House had dusty and disconnected stereo components in nearly every room.
Spent a bit more than my normal limit but...

Holy smokes Smokeshow69!
You **** for the free haul.
You will have to split it however with your MRS. for knowing to take along that awful looking wire seat thing. ;)

Thanks. For sure we are splitting any proceeds. We have actually been using the proceeds to fund a vacation and other unexpected expenses as they come up. It’s been really helpful and rewarding so far.

Some good finds this morning.
An AJAX folding drill bit index was my only find in my third haul of the year this year (Lugz 2023_03, post #402, page 11). My subsequent posting of it on the 'Drill Bit Indices' thread down on the VB (see A-Z Threads Index in Sticky) prompted a mini deep dive if you want to read up on their history and see other examples and their cousins (Morse, etc). Nice find.
Prince Albert can (1/4 ful... can I do anything with it?
You can crack some jokes with it.

Outlaw's house. Phone ringing. Outlaw picks it up.

Outlaw: Hello, Outlaw residence.
Lugz: Do you have Prince Albert in a can?
Outlaw: Yes, I do.
Lugz: Well, let him out!

Except for the lonely orphan DOE wrench (33F from a 'Teens era Bonney Ford Wrench Set No. 9), it was a "paper" haul (Lugz 2023_30) at the flea this morning, including a smattering of '42, '43, and '45 RAILROAD Magazines, other vintage RR literature, two Singer books (I don't collect the machines, but I DO collect the tools...), and a souvenir B.S.A. neckerchief from the 1969 Nat'l Jamboree in its original envelope.

Don’t post in this thread often but wanted to share finds from my favorite sale of the year yesterday. Real ******** picking where something heavy could fall on your head if you aren’t careful, but some great stuff. I put half my pile back for lack of space and that’s not even counting stuff I didn’t touch because it was too big like vises and a 3/4” drive proto set, or outside my wheelhouse like planes. For $40 here’s what I ended up with. IMG_5960.jpeg
Tohnichi 3/8” drive click torque wrench, Indestro 1/2” drive flex head, tuffy flathead screwdriver (grip mushroomed but tip perfect, always impressive), strange craftsman be 1/2” drive ratchet with a push button selector switch, mac angle wrenches, KAL safety wire pliers, blue line punch and chisel set, sk metric combo wrench set, Filson manifold wrench, snap on short wrenches, union 6” ruler, Osborne leather awl, snap on & craftsman screwdriver sockets and mini snap on dbe, lixie non sparking rivet hammer, schollhorn hole punch pliers, national #27 drills in package, Starrett telescoping gage set, proto mini chisels, Plomb and red devil pliers.

Then maybe my favorite- pencil with machinists union pocket clip!
image.jpg

Plus a Klein tool bag to lug it all home in.
IMG_5961.jpeg

This sale was in Richmond CA. I recommend anyone in the East Bay check out the second day today. It’s the one on Craigslist with lots of pictures.

Well done, folks! Lots of good finds!

I'm cruising back up to Boston from my Mom's place in VA, and decided to explore some estate sales in Lugz's home state, hoping to get the scoop on any goodies before they wound up at one of Lugz's flea markets.

No joy at the first one in Lawrence Township, but fared better at one in Hillside, NJ. Today was 50% off day, and I bundled the following marked and unmarked items for $35.

DeWalt DW474 7" angle grinder, with mounting tool and one spare disk
Pittsburgh extra large rivet tool, plus box o' aluminum rivets
48" crowbar

In the end, nothing of the vintage that Lugz usually looks for, so no BOLOs to issue, my friend.
