"Won" these on that auction site at a decent price. Supposed to get here next week. I've had the limited sizes in sets for a couple of car kits and wanted a more full set for the toolbox..

This will free the rest of the car kit sets for their original use, if not in the original cars...

In the end, nothing of the vintage that Lugz usually looks for, so no BOLOs to issue, my friend.
Haha! I'm more disappointed you didn't prearrange another meet-up, but I'm guessing you wanted to stay on 95. Columbus, that flea we hit together last year, was on your route, but I only go on Thursdays. You were closer to @Jim_No_Garage and @NJ Marty territory. :)

Thx! I can't say they are beautiful, but they do have an attraction. Sometimes its al in the way its all put together?
I’ve been slowly building up a set of blackhawk nutmasters, it’s cool to see other companies who have made something similar

Edit: are these metric? Doubly so if they are!

This sale was 45 minutes away, held promise with pics, There certainly was a lot of tools, but I was selective. Weather was great and most of the driving was country/backroads/scenic so why not. Some of the items were boxed/bundled which explains a bit of the purchases.

The Peugeot Freres Surpans are indeed metric. A company in England called "BNT" (Brades, Nash, and Tyzack) made very handsome knockoffs with a black finish in British Standard Whitworth sizes on license from Peugeot. Emile Petit, who owned the Surpans patent, beat Fritz Diebold, who owned the New Britain/Blackhawk Nutmaster patent, by about a year.

I thought about it, but figured a pair of sales would be quicker, and I wanted to get around the NYC Gordian Knot before it got too late. Maybe next time!

Kind of a strange week/weekend sales wise, start out going a tool tool tool sale at 8:00 am Thursday kind of poorly advertised and that's okay! so not many folks there at opening. Lots of mechanic type hand tools and lots of wood planes that the owner looked like he collected. Most of the mechanic tools were Truecraft and painted all red so figuring he worked in maintenance somewhere. Pretty high priced on the Truecraft stuff but surprising low on the little Snap-On stuff there so picked up 2 red drivers and some SAE crowfoots.

Next hit a sale first thing Friday morning in a rural area that had advertised tools and was one of the only ones there. Come to find out a recently widowed older lady hauling stuff out to tables in the morning since it had rained heavily the night before but I see no tools so I ask if she is bringing any tools out and she says her nephews found out she was having a sale and swooped in the night before and took them. Sounds like she didn't have children and she didn't seem too happy about the sale situation especially having advertised tools and now not having any. Kind of felt bad for her because it didn't seem like she had any help that morning from family but they had time to gobble things up before hand. Well not the first time that has happened where I have run into similar situations and won't be the last I'm sure so struck out Friday

Struck out again first thing Saturday morning at a couple sales so now I was bummed so I said what the hell I'll hit the pro estate sale a couple blocks over from my house in a much newer nicer house neighborhood from mine. Sale stated some tools and showed absolutely no photos of hand tools so I wasn't expecting much so hit the sale at 10:30 or so that had a 10:00 am start time since I wasn't expecting much. Well to my surprise they had a bunch of decidedly rusty Williams wrenches like I need hole in my head but I start looking through $1 and 25 cent boxes of items an see some Snap-On sockets and such so I start my hoovering up sockets which were probably in at least 3 different places at the sale and also find other Snap-On stuff in different locations at very slightly higher prices, think I made at least 3 go throughs before I was done, Anywho ended up doing the best at the one sale I least expected, you just never know.

Mac and Snap-On drivers, Vulcan 1/2 breaker, short Snap-On 1/2" breaker, Mac Sabina fan clutch wrench? and Snap-On cotter pin removal tool.

Bunch of mostly Snap-On sockets, regular and impact and probably half SAE and half metric.

Ok it has been a while for me since able to do any yard sailing.
A month ago, I fell off my roof, landed on cement pad, broke left shoulder clavicle, sprained right shoulder, 4 ribs, toe, & got knocked out with a concussion.
Ended up in hospital 2 days then rehab hospital for 2 weeks.
Once I could move a little better, several time a day on my phone I came to the garage sale thread to see how you guys are doing.
Anyway, after a month, I have been cleared for driving and as long as I don't lift anything heavier than 5 lbs, I'm back in the game!

There is an estate sale company called Caring Transitions, that I get notices about.
Most of the time very little tool stuff is listed & I ignore.
Occasionally tools are included, & while most stuff is bid higher than I will pay, since they mentioned a large amount of cash & carry items also available the day of pickup, I paid enough to at least win one lot.
The plot thickens...
When I got there, I went through the house scoping out the confusion, & passed where auction lots were placed with lot numbers & saw my stuff.
Rather that deal with picking that up, I headed out the back door where there was a shed/garage that I saw was just being opened up.
At first it was just me and another polite fella picking, but after 30 minutes, there were 10 of us bumping into each other.
Keep In mind that 3Jakes shoulders don't work, his toe still hurts, & my ribs don't like to cough in the dust.
Here is the $70.00 pile I made.

Craftsman (imports) metric & standard 6 point sets
2 ford filters
P1010004.JPG

Then the big pile:
2 pair 8 ton Rino Ramps
New condition Propane heater
Nice 4 awg jumper cables & sling
A bunch of motor oil including 4 sealed gallons of Castrol Actevo
24 Foot 3/8 tow chain
12 awg ext cord on reel
Jugs of winter wiper fluid
3 jack stands
a bag of replacement gas can nozzles
And a couple other doodads

P1010005.JPG
P1010010.JPG
P1010008.JPG
P1010011.JPG

I walked back to my car while the attendent watched my stuff & drove it back to load up this stuff.
Parked in the ally & went back down to where my won auction lot used to be.
The 3/4 socket set had walked away.
I found the manager, explained what happened & she told me my credit card could be refunded for the whole lot & make a cash offer on this puller set, which I then paid 10 bucks for.
It's good to be back in the game.

LEFT-BEHINDS:

I wouldn't have bought the lamp, but it is an interesting idea for an old license plate.

I did want the antique two-drawer cabinet, and I got the lady down to $50 from $75, but I didn't want it that badly.

Wow Jake! Glad you are healing! that sounds like a whole lotta pain!

Good scores despite getting the sockets stolen - at least the auction people made good on it.

Sorry to hear you got hurt! Gravity *****.

$16 auction haul.

Here’s the contents of the small $2 cabinet .
If anyone knows what brand the cabinet is please let me know.
IMG_1729.jpeg
You **** for that $16 haul! Two or three companies from Taiwan offered that thin gauge cabinet. I found one labeled "Test Rite" with a matching top box that was in a little worse shape than yours a few years ago for $5. I straightened the thin metal out with my hands and some duckbill pliers. Gave it a coat of paint and now my wife uses it for her sewing stuff.

Smoke -- Free is always nice, but your giant free haul *****!

Just picked up the following wins from an auction.
Yankee 131A ratcheting screwdriver/drill 25” long. The biggest one I’ve seen in the wild.
Fordson 10” adjustable wrench
7” t square marked Olson but might be owners name (print looks crooked and stamped)
Sliding T bevel can’t find any markings
Carborundum no 109 sharpening stone in box
Small copping saw not marked
3” jaw clamp-on Lehigh vise. Looks like horn broken off and missing the bar.
Paid less than $20 for this and also a box of random newer tools.

Found the Wilde pry bar at a flea market for 25....looks brand new. The Action 1/2 drive set almost looks new minus a couple sockets being used...Action deep well 1/2 "....Husky set 3/8 looks hardly used a flat full if USA wrenches mostly Action and Thorsen which appears Thorsen made Action....wf ratchet and breaker added to my small collection of wf tools....and two Snapon refrigeration ratchets

After two false starts at sales that were supposed to be open, I found a decent sale while waiting for something to open around noon.
53066741811_2a76f0a841_h.jpg
A box of hex keys, string line, some taps, and a GTD tap wrench. Now, I need more hex keys like I need extra holes in my head, but it was the box itself that interested me
53067134635_cef1251248_h.jpg
Who knows how long that has been tucked away?

After that I swung back by the thrift store I was at the day before, and picked up these books I missed
53067240080_e09a864c99_b.jpg
All of them early British editions.

I haven't had time to attend many sales lately, but Saturday I attended the sale bmw mentioned yesterday. I got there just at opening, and many of the items I was interested in from the photos had either disappeared or were marked NFS or SOLD. A pair of drawer units I was interested in had not sold yet, and I was able to buy them, 20 1"x42" 60 grit sanding belts, and a Huot No. 826 number drill stand. A picker I know was trying to identify some wrenches, so I loaned him my magnifying glass. In return, he gave me the self-opening die head!
Drawer Units.jpg
Estate Sale.jpg
I was out-the-door for $50.00, which was quite reasonable. The drawer units have heavy duty ball-bearing slides, and were originally used to store Numerical Control punch tapes. Each drawer held 120 plastic cases in a wire rack. I ended up with over 450 plastic cases and a garbage bag full of punch tapes!
Drawer Contents.jpg
After emptying the drawers, there is a lot of storage space. Each drawer inside dimension is 36-1/2" wide, 17-1/4" deep, and 4-1/2" tall. they are actually quite sturdy.
Empty Drawer.jpg
On the way home I stopped by a garage sale. The only man item there was a 5 gallon fuel jug, which I got for $5.00.

Interesting, I'm not sure I've ever sorted out when Impacts becmae a thing. Likely in WWII?

I put together some "Before and After" pics of some of the cleaned up tools from Sat. I'm really happy with the USC and separate containers for SG and Evaporust in the tanks water - it quarks really fast and does a good job! de-grease first, then rinse, then scrub with a tooth brush, then E-rust and a light wire wheel. To keep the wire wheeling in bounds I use a tiny 4" homeowners fractionsal HP "grinder" adn a very fine wire wheel, and a light "polishing" touch. works great!

Before: -The first combo, (A billings)

Proto Before.jpgClamp Before.jpg

Billings before.jpg

Ford Before.jpg

DBE Before.jpg

Long C Before.jpg

Bernard Before.jpg

After: -The first combo, (A billings) has not been wire wheeled (nor has the Bernard -Cad Plating? :dunno: ), this leaves something like a grey/black oxide finish on the plain steels? :dunno:

The Bernard has alte 1800's patent dates...

Here is my find Saturday morning after leaving Don and arriving to find a yard sale in the Main Street of Truckee opening up with plenty of parking, only a few steps to cross the street.

Amongst a clearance of builders remnants were these California made TW’s by seperate makers.

$1 ea

Although each is quite heavy for a 1/4” drive tool my baggage for the flights across the Pacific will weigh in OK.

Nice find!
Who knows how long that has been tucked away?
No later than 1959, when the Plomb Tool Company changed their name to Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc., and no earlier than 1948, when they started slapping Proto brand name stickers on boxes and ads hoping it would be enough to get Plumb and the court off their a&&. (They were wrong!) So, somewhere between 64 and 74 years. :)
this leaves something like a grey/black oxide finish on the plain steels?
That residue wipes right off with penetrating oil and steel wool or a rag.
I'm not sure I've ever sorted out when Impacts became a thing. Likely in WWII?
Just before, but there was very little in the military inventory other than assembly lines. It did not catch on until much later. Off the top of my head, I believe the first Plomb Tool Co catalog that any "Power" sockets for "power nut-running equipment" show up is EDIT: 1939, "Cub" (3/8") drive, and they use the term "Impact" for the first time in very late 1947, 3/4" and 1" drive. I have not gone laterally with that in other mfgrs, but I would bet it's similar. Like you, I had never really looked at it closely before. Interesting question.

Was able to pop over to the farm where we picked up a bunch of signs to get the rest of the stuff we couldn’t fit on the first load.

Here’s the highlights: pump handles, 3’ pipe wrench, belt measuring tools, leg jack. My favorite pick up was the large Radial Fan Gas Station shade. I’ll keep it and eventually put it up in or on my shop.

Uh-oh. Is that a spouse sighting?! Those are rarer than unicorns around here! :)

If it spun, you could host disco nights, gulag torture experiments, or both at the same time! :) Seriously, cool pick.

Earlier this month, we were back in the tri-state area visiting our daughters, friends, and some relatives. One of our GS OG’s helped me with his favorite flea markets in PA and NJ (there are a heck of a lot more than in CA). I was able to sneak three morning visits into the schedule and picked up a number of BOG sockets and extensions, Mossberg wrenches, some Bonney, Plomb, RAY and Blackhawk individual sockets, and some vintage wrenches:

BOG MFG. Co. early socket set (1/2”-Drive, 12 and 8-points): 13/16”, 25/32”, ¾”, 11/16”, 19/32”, ½”, 11/32”, 5/8”, 5/8”, ½”, 7/16”, 1/2"-drive swivel socket male-female, No. 948 9" extension, swivel double socket 1/2" drive, No. 932 12" speeder wrench.
Frank Mossberg Co. No. 243 9/16" x 5/8" DOE wrench
Mossberg #207 tappet wrench
Mossberg #208 tappet wrench
early Bonney CV sockets and extensions
Plomb LA #5414 socket
Blackhawk #8926 and #40322 deep sockets
1920’s RAY socket with base ring
Auto-Kit Forged Vanadium No. 200 (date code 8.3C) DOE
Williams The "Superrench" #1024 DOE wrench, Chrome-Molybdenum
K-D MFG. CO. No. 69 1/4" x 3/16" ratchet

One quick question – do you officially have a “picker’s eye” if you are driving to get gas and 25 yards ahead, you spot what looks like a chrome tool on the side of the road…ten yards away and you determine it is a ratchet…you park ahead and run back to find a Snap-on FH747 swivel flex head long handle 3/8”-drive ratchet, a little beat up on the cushion grip, but otherwise perfect? $17 total including the “free” ratchet.

More pics of the Lehigh? Cool little Machinists Clamp on.
Here’s more. Anything else you want to see, just ask.

Edit: Just looked at these on my PC. I take lousy pictures. I need better lighting!

Sure, rub it in why don'tcha!
One of our GS OG’s helped me with his favorite flea markets in PA and NJ (there are a heck of a lot more than in CA).
:) It really is something you have to see to believe. Every once in awhile some GJer who doesn't know about this thread will start a thread up here or down on the VB about picking and the "Fleamarkets are dead" comments begin and I can tell they're not from around here.

Nice 3-day haulage, Fred!

Absolutely! We've had enough middle and side of the road finds over the years that several hosts have included it as an official source in their Intros! :)

Good eye!

SWMBO and I went to our 1st sale in a long while. No expectation of tools, and it did not disapoint. Being empty nesters again, we don't want a dog right now, but SWMBO did allow me to buy a Dachshund....in bronze.

What's interesting is this dog was made in the 1950's by Richard Rohac and have been sold for anywhere between $300-$600. For $8, I'm keeping it......

I agree with Lugz, that thing is adorable! And incredible that the impossibly long tail is still all there...

Then the big pile:
2 pair 8 ton Rino Ramps
New condition Propane heater
Nice 4 awg jumper cables & sling
A bunch of motor oil including 4 sealed gallons of Castrol Actevo
24 Foot 3/8 tow chain
12 awg ext cord on reel
Jugs of winter wiper fluid
3 jack stands
a bag of replacement gas can nozzles
And a couple other doodads

I walked back to my car while the attendent watched my stuff & drove it back to load up this stuff.
Parked in the ally & went back down to where my won auction lot used to be.
The 3/4 socket set had walked away.
I found the manager, explained what happened & she told me my credit card could be refunded for the whole lot & make a cash offer on this puller set, which I then paid 10 bucks for.
It's good to be back in the game.

Yikes! What an ordeal. Welcome back, heal well.

Mike
