Don't be shocked if you guys see more onesy-twosy flea hauls from me this year or even just onesy hauls like this funny-looking billiards rack today (Lugz 2023_03). I am trying to be more selective and I am a little low on disposable scratch. I had 11 bucks in my pocket and a coffee and buttered roll didn't leave much to play with! :)

2023_03b.jpg

Seriously, I know among Garage Sailers that @d42jeep has one of these folding indexes, branded Atlas, and I think @Outlawmws has a Morse, but I'm not sure who the OEM was. I will post more photos on the 'Drill Indices' thread and do some reading, starting there.

^ YES!
One of those "mystery" brands I can't get a finger on.
Ajax / pliers /
Ajax / Ajax Auto Parts Co., Racine, WI / auto jack / patent /
Ajax / Ajax Mfg. Co., Pittsburgh, PA / boring machine /
Ajax / Ajax hydraulic jack see Hein Werner /

.... and not one of those looks like a possible candidate.

you think all three of them might have been made by the same outfit?

Nice finds! In terms of the double drive ratchet, I dont think its craftsman ?? It looks like you found a proto there and that was one they offered in dual drive (vogel ratchet). Please post more pictures of the ratchets when you have time. Those tools look crazy dirty like they were in a fire or stuck in cosmoline or something.
Yea, the guy had covered some of the tools in what seems to be crude oil. And not the sweet Texas maple syrup crude. More like Saudi sour. I know I got a Snap On, a Williams, and a Proto. I thought the double ratchet was a Craftsman based on the knurling on the handle. But the head was too dirty to read. I’ll hit it with some degreaser and a wire wheel And post some more pics.

Atlas, Ajax, ya know, one of those Greek mythological heroes.
Ha Ha, I have done this before as well...I didnt know you were a collector of soap brand items :)

If you are referenceing the 2nd ratched down in the picture, that is a dead ringer for a proto. To my knowledge craftsman never offered knurling like that on their modern ratchets. But I totally could be wrong. Those vogel type ratchets are not super common so you still did good.

Yes, but I don't know where you're getting "three" from, 4.c. "Atlas" was just a slip, me literally juxtposing one Greek hero whose name starts with "A" with another Greek hero ("Ajax") whose name also starts with an "A". So, two that I know of. Ajax and Morse.
At a Guess, since Morse actually made/makes drill bits, I'd say a likely OEM
Probably.

I plan to post more in the Indices thread.

Shiftless gifted me the Morse.
Is it identical to the Ajax, Don? I'm about to post mine and some research on the Indices thread. Please post your Morse there. As far as I can tell by searching on Morse, nobody has. If you already posted it but did not use the word "Morse" in the body of your post, please let me know the post #.

Lining up some more freebies from work (yet another round of repurpose / purge).

Unfortunately, a lot of stuff is being sent to some other sites, but I should be getting some scraps including some small cabinets.

I reminded them to not put anything into the dumpster without asking me...

Other than the name, it appears to be exactly the same number index. FDB1F613-E4C2-4521-AEBC-D88B280C6680.jpeg1B9DABCD-B6DB-4E6E-81F3-8A01D0D9E39D.jpegI believe I posted it in my basement tool display thread.

I looked at estatesale.org for this morning's crop of sales, and nothing close enough to justify the consumption of dead dinosaurs. On the other end, I'm having success clearing out the ol' garage of previous acquisitions, to include selling this for three times what I paid for it. Is it still considered flipping if you keep it five years...?

EDIT: Weird. The hyperlink preview says something about a unicycle, but when I click on it, it takes me to the correct post from the 2018 GS thread.
2nd EDIT: Oh, I see. The preview is from the post at the top of that thread page, not of mine halfway down the page that clicking the link actually brings up. Yeah, weird.

Well, I got up early for the only Estate Sale advertising tools--and of the tools, I was only interested in a bench vise pictured with a big meatball, the barely discernible name Reed and a bit of blue tape with $30 written on it. I got there a half hour before opening and saw only six people waiting in line, only one of whom was male. As opening time approached, the estate agent announced that those who wanted to enter the garage first could line up there. I moved over with alacrity only to see a familiar face stand up from where he had been sitting, hidden by a bush and position himself in the number one spot for the garage, relegating me to number two. He is a reseller and we are on talking terms despite his uncanny and annoying habit of always being in front of me in line. I knew exactly what he was going for and he failed to fall for my opening-time warning that his shoe was untied... Since I refrained from tripping him up or otherwise incapacitating him, he easily reached the vise and declared to the attendant that he would buy it.
It turned out to be a model 13 in excellent shape but missing the pipe jaws. I poked around despondently at the other worthless tools and then went home empty handed.

You're right! I was looking at the prices online.

Yeah, I had to buy a few of them at a prior job (to support a small fleet of test instruments for laboratories), was floored what they were charging then (15 years ago). And, they come in a flat(ish) box, "some assembly required."

Definitely wouldn't be my first choice for a garage or shop if I had to buy new, but if a free one were to show up, I'd be all over it!

Yeah it's for light duty work. He stores his hand tools on it while working on cars. He said there might be another one at work they're tossing out, and he would give it to me.

If he bothers you, I'll take care of him. What you've got to do is cut the hamstring on the back of his leg right at the bottom. He'll never play golf again, because his weight displacement goes back, all his weight is on his right foot, and he'll push everything off to the right. He'll never come through on anything. He'll quit the game.-Carl Spackler

OR, that is some **** on the part of the reseller. What a chump. I’ll give him that he was there early, but who hides behind a bush???

Oh yes, especially the tractor cart they made. I probably should have clarified, beyond the price, the instrument cart has a lot of nooks and crannies (hard to clean), the drawer isn't great, and the construction is a little weak (would be better if the corner posts were one piece top-to-bottom); for those reasons, I wouldn't BUY one (vs. even a cheap HF cart) for garage duty. But as I said, I'd definitely use it if I got one for free!

...who hides behind a bush???

I'm really hoping he embellished that part...

Hidden by a bush...

I read it as OR couldn't see him because of where the bush was, relative to where the guy was. Not that the guy was hiding.

Best/worst part about Estate Sales is that the early bird gets the good stuff, regardless of what someone else wants to pay. I have shown up to sales 2hrs before they open, just to ensure I can grab the thing I have my eye on (latest was a J-Line Shaper, for $250). Generally, it is between 20-60min, depending on how bad I want first dibs at some stuff.

Levaughn, you ****, free is always good!

Well the skys finally dried up for a while and still no local sales, but third Sat of the month I can go North to a Col FM or South to a HS Flea, and I did the Col one last time I was desperate enough to travel - this time I went south. A bit over 50 Miles round trip. I like the HS Flea better anyway. A lot more things I'm interested in even if a bit thin on tools this time.

Only one tool I bought, and I passed on a beautiful no-name Banjo someone had re-skinned with ****** plastic, and wanted what was IMO too much $$. Even still, I was tempted.

The Coffee can wil become a wood wick (3-4 wicks) candle for camping when the fire restrictions are on and I can't have a camp fire - The wood wicks cracle as they burns so a nice substitute. . The wrench is a "Blue Line" -I'm trying to place it... and the silver plate pickle fork caught my eye, and was not silly $$ so I'll ad it to my camp utensil roll (I need to reorganize that, maybe make a new one...) More binder clips - I Paint these orange (So can find them when dropped) and \ use them to assemble taps edge to edge for walls on canopy's.

Flea Cof Can, P fork Blue Line Clips.jpg

And another wood framed folding camp stool. I have another that I made a wood top for, and I'l do the same here. I also like them for a foot rest, and a duffel stand without the top. I've eaten numerous meals using one of these as a table. My other one is terrible as a seat; I tested this one and its actually not bad, (its got a larger seat area so you are not sitting on the bars...)

OK, I rechecked CL for local sales and some cropped up and 2 were worth getting in the car for. I'm glad I did even if it isn't a USUCK find. Its actually almost nice out today, sunny adn nearly 60 deg!

One had a lantern box in the pics but it was long gone. (a newish model 425 Coleman stove was still there, and still is..)

I found this book and got it - copyright 1938 and 1940:

Games Book.jpg

And I made several asks about long shot items, and mentioned aluminium canopy or tent poles - and struck pay-dirt, and it was "just take them! Please!" He was thinking about recycleing:

This is the exact same canopy frame I use with my tent trailer for a complete coverage canopy for "living space" and a super rain fly over the tent of the tent trailer. I've been missing one top gable fitting since the day I got it some years back. I've used it stand alone, and for two different tent trailer setups with a replacement top piece I made from PCV (dn requires the aluminum poles to be taped on the ends for that piece....) No more!:

Canapy Peak.jpg

Canopy Top piece close.jpg

Its missing the other one and one corner piece, so the remainder are spares.

the long poles are all there -11 of them - 3 ridge poles, 4 "rafters" and 4 legs, at least one is bent, but is probably usable in a pinch, but mostly these will be used to make it bigger as needed for when I use it "free standing"(I'l figure that out and find a suitable tarp for that size...)

the 3 extensions for the ridge poles are there and will be used to extend my current canopy frame from 6 ft to 8 ft.
only 1 leg extension is there, so a spare...

Meanwhile any left over can be used for other pole projects...

I love the rule book for games. I found an old Hoyles rules for card games that's old and has rules for obscure games I've never heard of.

Serendipity or plain stubbornness, I'm glad you got your camp parts and spares.

GLE, one of the first listed was Whist, which I keep reading about in fiction books but have never played or understood. apparently very popular in Napoleonic times. I even Googled it and looked it up on Wikipedia, but no real clear instructions about the rules.

I'll dig it out when I go back to Michigan in the spring. The book is very cool. It had rules of etiquette for playing with mixed company! I'm pretty sure whist was one of the topics. At least I'm not crazy for finding that stuff interesting.

I've always thought I'd grab that book and a couple decks of cards if the **** hits the fan. It'll bring back olde timey entertainment.

Couple of scores so far this weekend. The first was a CL find, a tool collector liberating part of his 50 year collection of tools. Saw a few items I wanted, and they held them for me, but I also got to look closer at a lot of stuff they had advertised with only OK pix. I sent the link to some of my buddies hoping we might get a bulk discount (hope). I bought two things for friends, the rest for myself. I had to give a friend a ride to and from work Friday, so arranged the pick up after work. Turns out they lived one block away from my friend, bonus.

So the first item in the ads that caught my eye was a Stanley #46 plane with 12 blades. This is a skew blade multi plane, think #45 or #55 with skew for those who know planes. One buddy wanted a lock mortise chisel, which was held. My other buddy wanted a circular plane, so grabbed the better of two #13s for him. No bargain prices, but decent. And an 86 yr old who loved to talk, but his daughter wanted to go.

He also had a few planes I’d never seen, in pix or real life, including an E Walker Tool company plane, with 14 blades, for a great price.

In the pic, left to right, front to back:
Two I Ames hollow and round planes, a Cleancut gouge (local distributor house brand), Crookes Roberts & Co backsaw w split nuts, the #13, a Millers Falls John S Fray #80 corner brace with well worn wood, the Ibbotson swan neck lock mortise chisel, a Mackay Burley &Heys variable pitch compass plane, toothed veneer plane and Remscheid blade, two saw handles, one is a virgin, and the Stanley #46 and the box of blades.

GLE, I'm not a bridge player either so had no clue, but I'm not surprised.

Thanks Mike! I'm pretty happy with the canopy find for sure! I love it when an obscure find can be repurposed, and make something better for my use.

And this just came in the mail from a trade with our founder, Jeff - A Craftsman "Automatic" fractinal drill index. When you open this one the racks also tilt out. So now I have this for fractional, and similar for # drills, 0-60. Much easier than picking past the alrger drill racks.
