last year i sold my house and moved in with my girlfriend. our plan is to live here for another year while we build our new house.
our present house had only a small garage on a 50' lot. i need a garage badly, so we decided to build a 20 by 24 with 10' walls on a tight budget. because we are only here temporarily we didn't want to dump too much into it.
here is a pic of the original 16x14 garage...

this old garage was still in usable shape, so we put an ad in the local paper saying "usable garage for sale, must be dismantled and moved $1", we had about 50 calls, it was gone withing a couple days and we didn't have to do any of the work:thumbup:
we poured a 4' thick slab with a club footing. my original plan was to use in floor heating and install a pit, however, i really didn't want to spend the extra money and didn't want the hassle of trying to sell the house with an illegal pit in the garage floor.
we framed the garage with 2x4 walls (10') and 4/12 trusses to match the roof on the house...

in keeping with our budget, we bought damaged drywall from the lumber yard, it saves us a lot of cash. a little more work to mud, but worth the savings. we flip several houses a year, so the lumber yard stock piles damaged materials for us all the time.
note the short pieces of drywall, damaged ends cut off...

even the garage door was slightly damaged, i think i paid about $300 only for it:thumbup:

i built in an old big screen tv that i had, the light fixtures we got from the habitat for humanity restore, we got 6 4lamp fixtures for $40 and some track lighting for over the work bench for another $5.
the lumber yard had a huge pile of mostly black (some blue) 5/8" malemine laying around, we got a half ton load for $50, here are the cupboards as i'm building them out of the malemine. for counter tops we used solid core fire doors that had black laminate on them, they were for a school or office building, they were ordered the wrong size, they sat around for a couple years taking up space at the lumber yard, we got 3 for $100

the tile i ordered, i used it on the other side of the garage as well behind the sink and urinal.

Great job!!
I love the ingenuity you've shown with your use of recycled building materials. If this is your temporary shop, cant wait to see the permanent one. How much do you think you have in it total if you don't mind me asking? On second thought, maybe I don't want to know since I'm in deep with my garage build.

what kind of frig is that? that looks close to mine. i have a 1950 International Harvester
it's a general electric, not sure of the year. i rescued it from a cottage that i had renovated a few years back, it was white and in mint shape, so i took it apart and painted it black. it works great. i have another one that i have been converting into a smoker. that one will be painted with flames, i'll post pics when i'm done.
here's another shot of it...

totalnincompoop my ***. You have allot of talent young man. Now teach the young one how to build cabinets and hang drywall, he will never be out of work. It is good to see someone get a deal on stuff. It is not what you have, it is what you do with what you have! :drink:

Man, that is a SMOKING deal.

That looks great, I wished I could find a great deal on melamine like that, those cabinets look awesome. 'Course I'd have to buy a table saw then as well.

The garage is cool and all, but the look on this kid's face is 110% priceless. Good job on that part, for sure.

I, too, am in awe of your ability to make others' castoff "damaged" building materials work for you and cheap. Good work.
