The overloads in the motor starter or integral motor overloads protect the circuit wiring.

The circuit breaker only protects against short circuits and ground faults... In other words, it doesnt protect the wire from overload...

I was answering the question of protection against short circuit, not overload. The internal overloads could not detect a short in the conductor before the motor. No current would reach the motor.

This is what I meant, does the internal thermal protect against short in the motor,,, it's called thermal not short? I spose it would, this would allow smaller motors on larger circuits provided the primary wiring was big enough for short.
