Re: 24gun saft question?

I have the winchester safe and its great for me!

looked at the cannon and its nice also but the winchester is better...for me anyway.

Interior is way better and is bigger inside, is better constructed and the door opens 180* where the cannon opens 90* i believe because of the concealed hinges...so you have a harder time getting to the corner to store things.

Also you said just a few firearms so no big deal...but no way 24...thats maybe no shelves and jammed in.

always buy BIGGER than you thinkyou will need !!

Good luck! Dave.

I've got a Remington by Liberty safe. I considered Winchester at the time, but just got a better deal on the Rem. Good luck, moving those suckers *****!

This might help you decide.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2011/01/choosing-and-using-a-home-safe/index.htm

I used to be part of the biggest safe you can afford/have space for group but now I think one might be better served with two or more smaller safes.

A smaller safe is easier to move but that can work for or against you. Whatever you get, bolt it down.

Smaller safes can give you greater flexibility as far as the potential locations. You may not want to put a large heavy safe on anything but a concrete floor (you define what is large and heavy).
Two safes give you possibly a potential chance of greater survivability of at least some of the contents, especially if the safes are located in different parts of the house. Along with that, burglars must now defeat two (or more) safes to get all your treasure.

Kind of like having good housekeeping habits in the shop, one should still have a few fire extinguishers around. A fire resistant safe should be part of an over-all home safety plan.

Hope the above makes some sense.

Jim

thanks, good things to consider. do you think the concealed hinge on a cannon is more break in resistant than the exposed welded hinges??

Look at the fire ratings closely, some start timing the burn with no fire. Others put it in a burning fire and time. Also look at if pins engage on both sides of door jamb? Buy an American made safe with the best qualifications - not one with a licensed name on it that you like. Neither Remington or Winchester are safe makers, they are gun makers.

Re: 24gun saft question?

I bought a safe today for the house I just bought. I went to the gun show with no expectations of buying anything, but after talking to one of the big safe dealers there, I've got a new Winchester being delivered this weekend. They had Cannons next to them, and I chose the Winchester hands down. For one thing, the Cannon only has active locking bolts on one side of the door, the Winchesters have bolts side, top, and bottom. The Cannons just didn't look as well made at all, both interior and exterior fit and finish weren't nearly as nice.

This thing is the size of a refrigerator... 40" wide, 30" deep, and 72" tall, 985 lbs. I went bigger than I ever thought I'd need, hopefully this will keep me for awhile.

p.s. The only things the hinges do on a safe is allow the door to swing. They have no part in locking the safe. You can cut the hinges completely off a gun safe and the door still won't open.

Re: 24gun saft question?

The 2 real "safe" guys on the gun forum I frequent said they prefer outside hinges. I went with Winchester, (Used to be made by Granite Security) which one says is a great buy for an RSC, as these aren't really "safes," but residential security containers, but of course that's material for another thread. I love mine, but for an RSC, it is extremely heavy, (600# empty) which is good, but hard to move. A real safe would at least double that in weight-not likely in most homes. May as well install a vault room. You do seem to run out of room fast in them, which is why everybody seems to say, "Get the biggest you can afford and go up one in size."

Any safe is pretty decent to have. Most of your burglars are going to be kids and they aren't going to spend much time messing with one.

One of the guys at work and I were talking about this a few weeks ago. As long as the door has bolts through all sides, we'd be happy having exposed hinges. Why? If some ******* breaks in and spends their time trying to pry the hinges off, they're getting nowhere. :D

Re: 24gun saft question?

Based on the various brands I have serviced, look at Liberty (and forget Cannon); I would pick the Winchester since you mentioned two brands. The external hinges are my suggestion; the outside hinges are not a part of the locking system. There are bolts--either active or passive--that lock the hinge side same as the opening side.

Not in your query, but consider the dial combination rather than e-lock. Had to open (drill) a Cannon recently when the e-lock went bad. And Cannon guarantee was useless.

Re: 24gun saft question?

it depend on what your plans are for the safe, to keep fort knox or couple guns out of reach. I have a red head from bass pro shop. its not a top of the line liberty, but it does every thing i need. its going be very rare that your house catch fire or the local burglar going have a cutting torch on the hinges. but 99% it be keeping your kids and friends from touching the hunting gear. some of the cheaper safes, cheaper not cheapest, are great for that. oh i would love a big old liberty, but i would have to sell the truck

Re: 24gun saft question?

My brother-in-law recently retired from his fireman job with a big-city fire department. He saw and fought fires from the smallest apartment to the largest industrial building. He told me that one is not gonna get a "safe" that will truly protect its contents from fire, unless it's a small fire, until one has spent quite a few thousands of dollars on the safe. Meaning, to get that quality of safe costs a lot of money, more than most are willing or able to spend [including yours truly]. As he said, you can stick things in a safe and keep someone else from taking them, but fire is still gonna get them.

A 24 gun safe is pretty small. I have a Liberty Fat Boy Jr, and wish I had bought the fullsize Fat Boy.

Interesting web site. Note that they offer damaged [scratched on up] safes at a discount if you email them for a quote. If they have one to your spec's. Don't know how high the discount can go, I have a request in now for a quote to see how much.....

Two-hr. fire rating at 1880 F. looks pretty decent to me.

Buy fort knox. lifetime warranty and not cheap 14 gauge steel that can be beaten into with a hammer. It'll cost you but if you actually want a real safe you won't find it at academy.

saw a story on the news last nite - SOME (not saying all) Champion safes are made in a Mexican prison. A guy in Ohio had a brand new one delivered and got the added bonus of 285 # of marijuana!!! Almost half a million bucks street value. Another reason you are better off buying "Made in USA" - not made in America - when it means "North America"...... bet he had a few questions to answer:)
