24' x 24' Two Post Lift

I know this is more personal preference, but trying to make a decision on size & location for a 2 post in a 24' x 24' garage. My new house has an attached 3 car garage, and detached 24 x 24 which is strictly going to be my car workspace. Tool boxes, welder, compressor, torches, blast cabinet, parts washer, bench, etc. etc. etc. and my C3 Corvette.

My initial vision was to have the two post as far to one side as I can while still having access on the wall side of the lift thus leaving approx. 3/4 of the "second bay" area for workspace and possibly squeezing in my 5x8 trailer over the winter months or the Vette while something else was on the lift. All of the above items are planned to be along the walls.

Getting in there and actually starting to do some measurements and things are tighter then I thought. I'm now wondering if I should place the lift in the dead center? It would be nice to have plenty of clearance on all sides, but then permanently eliminates the ability to be anything more then a "1 car" space. However, without actually seeing the lift in there, I'm not sure having it over to one side really leaves enough room to be anything more then 1 car anyway. Opinions or experience or pictures??????

BTW the building is pole barn construction. Wall height is about 11-12' and has an open vaulted ceiling up to about 20' in the center. I plan on studding out the inside walls to insulate. 2x6's will bring me flush with the wall posts and allow for more insulation but drop the space to about 23' x 23'. 2x4's will leave a tiny bit more.

I have a guy with a nearly brand new Dannmar D10/CX "Wide" that I can get for $1500. It is 145" from baseplate edge to baseplate edge and 137" from outside post to post. I can also hold off and buy a narrow version lift to save a bit more space. Not sure which way to go. Daily driver is a RAM 1500 Quad cab with 6.5' bed so thinking the extra width would be nice. Flip side not sure how much a narrow version would help the layout / space.

I think trying to fit a second car in there with room to work around the lift will be tight. 137" = 11'-5" I'm going to approximate to 11.5' for simple math. A C3 Corvette is 5.75' wide, according to Wikipedia.

23' width - 11.5' lift - 5.75' Corvette = 5.75' for walking space.

This needs to be divided 3 ways, between the lift and the wall, between the lift and the corvette, and between the corvette and the wall. That leaves 1.9' for each of these which is tight. If you have a 2' bench on one wall, that drops to 1.25' between each.

Another consideration: How wide is the garage door? I would want a minimum of 18' to try to fit two cars in there and you might need more with a lift.

In my last shop I had my Rotary 2 post lift in a 14 foot wide bay. It worked but was anything but ideal.

I'm inclined to think centering the lift makes the most sense.

What does the building have for door(s)? Will the door be in the way when the vehicle is on the lift?

I would offset it from center, to at least have a good work area, probably place the post 3-4 feet from one wall, then bench and box can be on other side

as for storing your vette and trailer, lift vette up, set on the locks, place trailer underneath

I put my 2 post lift on an angle so one post was in the center of the garage so I could still park a second car. I have a single 18' garage door so on the lift side I drive in at an angle.

I might be able to help you out a little. I have a dammar 10 cx-10. My garage is 36' wide but I took some measurements that might help you out. Looking at the pictures I have 14" from the outside of the right post to the wall and 46" from the car to the wall. That is plenty of room to work. I have a little less room when working on my suburban but still more than enough. I have enough room to pull an axle. From the wall to the outside of the left post it measures 151".

I am happy with the placement of my lift, but I honestly believe I could move it 6" closer to the wall and still have enough room to work (probably couldn't pull the axle on my suburban). Using my measurement that would leave you approx. 10.5' on the other side. If you need any other pics or measurements let me know.

Sorry I'm not sure how to rotate the pictures.

Do you have a pic of what you mean? I'm assuming the car on the lift has its nose in the back corner of the garage then?

Zio! That's very helpful. I didn't think the post could go that close to the wall, but also didn't calculate how much more distance the car will be from the posts on a wider lift.

My garage is basically the same size as yours. Debated the 2 post lift placement but then decided a 4 post would work out better. With the castor kit I can roll it where I want it, move it totally to one side and leave a car on it and still be able to drive underneath for storage and still have ample floor space beside it (this is what I do for the winter months). I do have the rolling RJ45 jack which is a must have for a 4post. I know there are advantages to the 2 post, but I find the 4 post does everything I need. Whatever works for you

Mine is 24x24. My 2 post lift is the minimum from the edge of the slab, I think it was 6 or 8 inches. I have an 18' door. I can get another car in next to the lift no problem. In fact we do it every night. It's fine to work on the lift plenty of room to pull an axle if you had to.

I'm as bright as I look in the picture above.
Check my thread in my sig, the garage is 24 x 32, but same idea. 2’ from the sidewall with the post, and plenty of room for a bench and such. If photobucket pictures don’t work for you, use google chrome with the photobucket “fix” extension.b2367c46ca77d1834b8e5f82d75cd888.jpg

Very Nice! Mine is actually very similar. Man door is on the left wall along with a window, the right wall (facing the street) has two windows, and in the peaks above the garage door and back wall peak is a window. My ceiling / roof pitch is more extreme and higher, but no loft just wide open. I wish I had the extra depth like you though! My septic mounds are real close to the back corner so it couldn't have gone any deeper.

...thanks for the extension tip. Never realized it was chrome that was preventing photobucket pics from showing up. Would have helped various research for the past few years!
