The trencher to cut the hole looks like a giant chainsaw but for dirt instead of trees. It was self propelled but the steering was all manual. I've used one of the circle saw style ones and it wasn't easy to use either.

zYSHEAL.jpg

I was hoping we'd find oil but instead we found water. The in-ground sprinkler system my wife wanted to keep operational. 3 white pipes for 3 separate zones in the back yard. The grey one at the bottom of the hole will carry the power. There's also another pipe for phone/network but that was installed after I took the picture.

I will have 100 amperes in a Square D Homeline box. My house also has a Homeline. I think the box has 24 spaces.

Friday was a muddy mess so they called off the work. I was out of town over the weekend. Yesterday I didn't have time to take any pictures because of the doorbell ringing.

100Ampere sub-panel. Right now it has 2 circuits, one for the light and one for a socket I didn't photograph.

FjqdNWn.jpg

Here's the light. I'll probably add 8-10 more that will be flush mounted. I'm also going to add some recessed can lights at the far end of the room as that is where I'll have my welding table/work area.

ZFgmdfW.jpg

The larger one on the right has the power lines in it that runs from the panel in my house. The smaller one I'll use for the network and phone cables. As it turns out there's a network jack in the wall right here behind my computer. I don't know if it is connected to any cabling or not but that does save me some small amount of time/money.

The installers of the rollup door forgot to put the lock on. I had to call them twice to get them to come out and do it and of course it was a half-assed job. I was at home depot buying a ton of electrical stuff and bought new hardware to fix their screwups. I was embarassed for them so I didn't take any pictures of the ugly. The washers they used were small enough to fit between the slots on the sliding bar.

And they used regular hex head bolts on the exterior. The holes are square so you can use carriage bolts. This helps prevent any random idiot from unbolting it from the outside. Do you even know the whole purpose of the lock?

ZO6abL4.jpg

I ran a string through the smaller pipe to pull the network and phone cables through. I put my shop vac on this side and fed the kit string in from the crawlspace in the house. It's probably 30-40 feet of pipe and it was super easy. It was more trouble getting the shop vac from my other garage. My wife had pulled into the garage too far and it was trapped under the stairs.

I installed a bunch of receptacle boxes. This is only a fraction of them. I'm going to put my welding table against the wall on the right side of this picture.

3ybHBAH.jpg

And here's the lights my father-in-law helped me install. They were upgrading a school in Tennessee and were getting rid of these. I got them for less than the price of the bulbs. There's 8 total and 4 bulbs per fixture. I think I said it before, but I'll be putting recessed lights above the area where my welding table will go.

Garage is looking great! Looks like you have plenty of light. :)

Thanks. I looked through some of the other members' galleries and thought I might not have enough. This should be a good start and I can add more later if I decide to try replicating the sun inside.

Thanks for reading (or just looking at the pictures). Let me know what you think.

LOL - used to be a place on I-45 north of Houston with a big sign "Bob's B-B-Q, Computers and Mini Storage".

Great build, keep up the pics. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Falcon. I was inspired by someone's "High performance connecting rods and sweat pants".

I think I've got a few days of pulling romex and installing receptacles ahead of me. I can probably make good progress before Thanksgiving weekend. If I can get my big stereo out there I bet I could finish it up today. Music makes the work happen in my garage.

And then there was rock and it was good.

I think I've got another furniture dolly to put the other speaker on but it is buried in the attached garage. I'll be listening mono for now. Eventually I'll work up some kind of a mount for the speaker so it won't be on the floor. The dollies will keep it mobile while I get stuff moved in and positioned.

I could have made a lot more progress but had to travel for Thanksgiving and couldn't be near the garage.

Lots of looking at these, and I'm probably around one third of the way done with my 120V circuits:

I've been discussing my storage needs with Eric from Baldhead and finally got something worked out.

Powered up my one completed wall and checked every receptacle.

I just realized I didn't check the ground fault protection. I tested and reset the GFCI outlet but didn't verify the ones downstream of it.

If you are doing your own 120V stuff I'd highly recommend one of these. I don't know where mine came from but Harbor Freight has them for $3.50. I 'thought' I was doing good work but my checker indicated otherwise. I powered up the north wall of the garage and had 2 with bad neutral connections.

I got a big 1000' spool of Cat6 on ebay for not too much money. I'll need to run two separate cables. One for phone and one for network. I'm thinking I'll do the network first so I can put a wireless access point out there. That way I can stream Pandora on my ipod.

Ballpark w/slab as we see it $20-30k? Just getting a perspective on cost for a nice stick build w/bricks. I live S.MS and want to build soon, although I consider your on the "hi end" of my spectrum, it gives me some goals to shoot for... drool for...?

Very Nice, thanks.

I'll try to do this. I don't know if I've got the photography skills/equipment to be helpful but I'll give it a go. There's still a reasonable amount of room I think, considering my backyard wasn't enormous to begin with.

High 20's as you see it. Naturally you could build it for significantly less if you can do some of it yourself. I don't have the knowledge or skills so I paid for a lot of labor.

Sorry for the craptacular pic. However, I think it's possible to read that my 1394 connection is disabled and my wireless is not connected. If you look close it says Local Area Connection connected. I'm going to put a wireless access point out in the garage.

Looks like your build is coming along beautifully. Those lights are nice--looks like they throw a lot of light on the space. I almost forgot about a CAT6 run in my garage for an access point. Thanks for the reminder!

Thank you. I guess if I can't be an example I can always serve as a reminder. :)

My curiosity got the better of me and I found myself measuring the current draw for my garage.

EEqeEox.jpg

This is the circuit my lights are on. It is 36 T8 bulbs, 32 of them are 32W. I do not remember the other 4. I measured the draw for the stereo and my wireless access point but it was sad, 0.2A.

I'm almost tired of looking at wires and receptacles. I should be able to wrap up the electrical before Thursday.

A bunch of boxes. I moved my lawn mower down which will give me a lot more room when I'm kicking the VW.

Great looking build man.
The house i am in now has a similar sized shop behind it. It only has 2 usable bays in it. The other section is a couple of small offices.

Exactly how my trusses in my garage are set up only backwards. Going to do the lighting how you did yours as well. Looking good!

These things are HEAVY. I'd strongly consider aluminum cabinets if I were to do it again. There are wall mount ones in the boxes but I don't know if they have mounting hardware in there or if I'll need to buy some.

The cabinets are upside down in their boxes but were very well packed. The cardboard was very strong.

I was checking out Google Maps and they captured the brick delivery.

Sorry for the lack of 'good' updates, not that any of them have been previously. Now that I'm out of money they will be even slower and poorer in quality.

As a pro landscaper... that is how we find irrigation lines by cutting right through them with a trencher, skid loader, edger, etc... Kinda funny when you do! Homeowners freak the hell out and it's such an easy fix.

I like the lights recessed into the trusses like that. I have a 24x40 with 12' walls and scissor trusses, am attempting to plan out electrical and lighting.

Thanks. It was just a coincidence that I checked the Google Maps website and my new garage was there. The whole yard is roughly 0.5 acres and the house is 2500 or so square feet.

I like the lights recessed into the trusses like that. I have a 24x40 with 12' walls and scissor trusses, am attempting to plan out electrical and lighting.

It was my father-in-law's idea. We just cut some 2x4's to fit between the trusses and screwed the fixtures into them.

If you just see the lights out of the corner of your eye (not looking directly at them) the color is almost like seeing the sky. When my mother came over she thought I had put skylights in.

In other news, I had to break-in my new garage a bit prematurely. My truck needed new balljoints and I took the opportunity to restore it to a factory suspension. The previous owner had put in some lowering springs on the front and flipped the leaf springs to beneath the axle in the rear.

That's really a good looking garage -
Carriage House built mine also - I don't have it ready for a project yet.
Just got some power on a couple of weeks ago (had to upgrade my service to 400A) so hopefully I can finish wiring and get a floor coating down soon.

How would you rate them? I'm only mildly satisfied with the work and the experience. 6 of 10 points.

Next on my list is putting up some drywall so I can get my wall cabinets mounted.
