That's outrageous

Visit a local wholesaler.

Terminology when asking for the switch. Double pole, single throw 15a toggle switch. Don't call it a '240v' switch.

I'm just buying what he told me to. I was going to do a disconnect box but he said it's over kill. Have you ever seen one illuminated? It's for an air compressor.

May not need double throw either.

Get double pole single throw.

A fusible or non-fusible A/C pullout disconnect will be a better choice then a toggle switch, cheap too. I prefer a safety switch but they cost more $$.

Back the horse up!

What is the HP rating on the compressor?

If you are looking for a motor-grade cutoff switch you won't find it at HD for $6 or on amazon for $8. I guess it's possible that a $6 switch won't burst into flames...

Also, I could NOT find a motor-grade cutoff switch with an illuminated toggle.

After much searching I settled on this Leviton switch ($28.19) and enclosure ($20.01).

It is cheaper than the one in your link and it is the right switch for the job...soooo...you're welcome.

I use Square D 2510FG1 and its siblings. They are about $12 on eBay. You need the correct size overload to go with it. All in around $20.

Has anyone found a cheaper one? This is one of the only one's I've found.

Yes.

You don't need "center OFF."

HD has them for $6

FWIW - I have 2-hp 230V 15-amp compressor.

Be careful calling out an illuminated switch, when I suspect what you want is a "PILOT" light instead.

Illuminated typically means a small amount of light is ON when the switch is OFF. The intent is to help users find the switch in the dark.

PILOT is just the opposite, a typically brighter light is ON, when the switch is ON. In your application it would be ON when you have the compressor switch ON.

I know of no properly rated switch for your application that includes a PILOT or illuminated function for that matter.

I wasn't sure, was just an idea. A few shops ago had a pilot light in the disconnect panel. But thanks i appreciate it

Another option is run a contactor (relay) for switching the load, then just use a lighter duty switch to control the contactor.

Not a suitable disconnecting means.

The OP asked for a switch, not a disconnect. Contractors are used for switching motors all the time.

I'm not sure if the OP knows the difference. If not, maybe this'll prompt him to figure out what he really needs.

For some reason, Amazon.ca sells items at insanely inflated prices compared to Amazon.com - like 5 times as much or more in many cases. Get stuff shipped to the US side of the border, go pick it up and save tons of $$...

The OP's same Leviton switch on Amazon.com is only $15.11 (USD) vs $72.83 (CAD) on Amazon.ca!!! http://www.amazon.com/Leviton-3032-2-Toggle-Double-Pole-Grounding/dp/B00271GTQY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452439878&sr=8-1&keywords=Leviton+3032-2 Can someone explain why??? (and it ain't in taxes and duties).

Just go to a local electrical wholesaler to get the right part and a good price. Usually cheaper and often better than HD too. Make sure the switch is motor rated for the HP it will control.

Thanks guys. It has a switch on the compressor but I would feel better having one wired beside it as well. No plug just a cord. My breaker is on the other side of the garage for it. Nothing else is on the circuit it will be on.

No plug but a cord?

Is it hardwired?

If so Cordage isnt to be used for permanent wiring.

I am not sure what the risk is with cordage on something like this but I accept a little and do it anyway. I think its one reason the installer kept harping on the plug, he doesn't know why but it probably doesn't meet the letter here but in this app I am not really scared.
The main intent is to keep it out of the walls. A 10 wire and a 30A will run that without burning the joint down and as I mention a local breaker may suffice, wouldn't need to be on top of it but would be comfortable with it in the same room. All the rest is more **** in the line if its not legally needed, nothing better for motors than a straight shot to the panel.
When I was slumming I bet I replaced 6 or 8 of those over a few years in bars for air cond. I don't know a thing about it but its the first thing I check, burnt up pos, cheap **** ruins a good wire. They got to have it though but your comp may not and if it didn't I wouldn't.

Slight change of plans. I ended up picking up the kobalt. We've decided if it's possible I want to put a plug on it for ease of moving it in the future. 240v 20 amp would a simple plug in style be ok? Or do I need twist lock
