Not sure what the plan is for the layout of cabinets etc. but some cool vintage posters or car art would look great with those pot lights shining on them.

The plan was to put some of my posters from my racing career under those lights. 4 seasons of racing means 4 posters, and I have 5 pot lights on that wall... maybe I need one more season under my belt to make it even.

damn that's nice!

Thanks, I picked up supplies today so if everything goes to plan the painting should be finished and all pot lights should be installed this weekend.

Contractor is returning early next week, which means hopefully construction will begin on the custom cabinets!

Happy to announce the painting was completed on Friday. It's still drying in this picture but you get the idea. I also installed the majority of the pot lights as I went around painting the ceiling. They give a nice ambience, and I am really happy I decided to go with a 3 stage lighting system.

I also completed a mock up of the cabinets that will be going in. The plan was to keep one side of the garage free from any permanent structures so if I want to put my boat or trailer inside, or if I have a truck with something in the back that I want to back in I have lots of room. I will more than likely have at least one roller cabinet that will go in on that side which can easily be moved.

2qPZ3E1.jpg

On the far right will be where my tool box will go, and it will end right on the center line of the garage.

The first lower open pocket on the right hand side is for the fridge, above that is the pocket for the microwave. There will be various drawers and cupboards, but I didn't draw those in as we aren't sure as to what sizes we are going with yet.

In the center on the upper cabinet is where the TV will be mounted, below the TV is a shelf for the sound bar and a secondary shelf for a bluray player/apple tv/satellite receiver, etc.

The second lower pocket further left is just an open area for legs to go when your working at the computer that will be on the desk.

Further left the counter steps down to a shallower design, this is to make room if there is a second vehicle in the garage that you need to get around. This cabinet will store my air compressor inside, as well as a snowmobile lift that I only use occasionally and don't want out in the open all the time.

The best part is what I designed to be in the top of the shallow counter, there are hinges which allow the split top to open in two sections on gas pistons. Inside here will be a hidden horizontal gun cabinet which will have a concealed locking system as well so it should be fairly well hidden.

Contractor is back and ready to hammer out the final details on this garage, and hopefully back to regular updates on here.

Well as with a lot of cabinet designs, they go through different stages of evolution. The trick is trying to incorporate all the different things I want within a given space while still allowing two vehicles to easily fit inside.

While I tweaked the design a bit, we also got busy inside the garage mounting the upper pot lights, installing all the electrical sockets, switches and switch covers. We also had to replace the hinges on our house front door (cheap Chinese hinges it came with didn't even last a year of Canadian Winter).

Tomorrow we are going to be installing the 14 T8 light panels, and then we can call for our final inspection.

Really nice build. Your use of lighting, both interior and exterior, is pretty classy. The effect of those bulkhead lights will be more impressive with your cabinets in there. I'll definitely be interested to see how you bring everything together. Great work!

Your lighting effect is spectacular, I cant wait to se the T8s in action. Well done.

Thanks, I'll hopefully post pictures tonight if they get installed today. The current lighting is really neat, you cast shadows in every direction, which I have been told is a sign of good even lighting.

Thanks very much. I'm excited to see the cabinets go in. I will be finalizing their design tonight with my sketching program before they get built. The cabinets are going to add even more light since there are 6 puck lights going under the cabinets above the work bench, as well as a lit sign on top of the cabinets.

Looks like we are going to have a bit of a break in the cold weather tomorrow, so we are going to make an attempt at finishing the siding and shingling the dutch gable overhang as long as its not to windy.

Love those pot lights.

Thanks man, I'm very happy with them!

Looks great. We went with the same siding on our house this fall.

I like the lighting as well, got to have a choice on how bright to make it.

You're happy with the siding so far? We got dozens of samples from a variety of siding companies and we thought this felt the highest quality and looked the best. I like the would grain texture built into it.

Yeah I am a fanatic when it comes to lighting. I like to have the ability to control how much light I have for different moods or activities. Every light in my house is on a Lutron theater dimmer, I have a light sensitivity issue with my eyes so I like the lights to come up incrementally rather than just turn on full blast. Drove my wife and contractor crazy with my insistence on them, but now everyone likes them too.

Stage 3:

Also finished the humidistat and solar timer switches.

Pictures don't really do it justice, when the fluorescent lights come on the camera adjusts the picture darker because its so bright. You could perform surgery in there.

It's all in the details. Even the faceplate screws are all lines up.
Very nice job on the entire project you should be very proud!

Thanks very much, I tend to be very detail oriented. Picked up wood this morning to start on the cabinets, very excited to get the ball rolling on those.

Very nice, I especially like the detail on the corner cabinets. I really wanted to find a 'corner solution', but there wasn't a store-bought option as nice as yours.

Thanks, yeah custom was the only way to go with all the features and details that I wanted. We've tried to think of absolutely everything while designing, and to be honest the finished product is looking almost identical to what we designed, with very few minor changes.

Once everything is installed I will post more pictures to outline all the features.

We've been waiting for a nice enough day to do the blow in insulation in the attic of the garage all winter. Finally we got our chance yesterday.

IMG_3197.jpg

I've rented insulation blowers before, but this one worked a lot better than any previous ones. Had a few jams to deal with, but it was easily 3x faster than any of the others.

IMG_3198.jpg

We put about 14 inches of blow in insulation on top of bats that we already had in place giving us a total value of R-70.

We had 16 bales of insulation, we only ended up using 8 on the garage so we used what we had left to bump up the R-Value of my attached garage and the entranceway of my house. My entire house has R-60 in the attic now.

With warmer temps expected all this week we are hoping to have the floor patched and the siding completed. Looking at roughly 2 weeks until completion.

Wow man. You have been making awesome progress on this. and I LOVE the panel lighting combined with the spot lights, they remind me of the bridge lighting on the Enterprise >.> (i might be a big nerd). I'm definitely gonna be following this through to completion. Can't wait to see it all finished up and fully functional.

Thanks! I am very happy with the lighting as well. Having a 12 foot ceiling I was a bit concerned about using the pot lights only, adding the T8 panels was a great solution and they are very bright.

I'll take the comparison to the Enterprise as a huge compliment :)

Today was spent finishing the siding on the front and wrapping and shingling the dutch gable overhang on the front of the garage. From the street the garage appears finished, but we still have to put siding on the rear wall. Keeping my fingers crossed we have enough siding!

Well we didn't have enough siding, I don't think I accounted properly for how much waste there is when siding the gable ends. I could only find one company that stocked this siding so I put in a rush order for 8 more pieces.

Trying to stay on target for completion by the end of next week.

The temperature dropped so we went back to working inside again.

The cabinets are really coming together. One more day of working on little things and then hopefully our countertop material comes in so we can finish that off.

IMG_3220.jpg

Added the under cabinet lighting as well.

IMG_3221.jpg

In this picture you can see the window casings that were installed on Friday. We just made it look like one big window, really like how that turned out.

The long narrower counter in the foreground has some really unique features I can't wait to show you guys but its not quite finished yet.

IMG_3224.jpg

Swing away TV mount in the TV pocket.

IMG_3225.jpg

Swinging the TV out of the way and adding cupboard doors gives you access to storage that would have otherwise been lost.

Good looking build. I just read the entire thread.

When are you putting in the driveway to the new garage?

Is that you tractor or the contractor's? Something that size would be handy during snow removal time. How much do you get at a time?

Great work Ben. Great eye for detail...

R-70 hey? My shed roof is R-1.8!! You guys are serious about insulation - I was in Vancouver and a guy from Oz was showing me all the different standards he had to meet when renovating a place over there. We could do it a lot better.

The cabinets look great too, I love the storage area behind the TV. Lots of planning has gone into your place.

Thanks, sadly I am not a carpenter, my skills are in other areas. I handled all the design work, and I am lucky enough to be working with a guy who can create basically anything I can come up with. Working with him I've picked up a lot of skills, but he is a perfectionist and usually wants to do everything himself.

Thanks! We are still debating on what we want to do with the driveway. I've been trying to get quotes for putting a concrete one in but haven't gotten any numbers back yet. One idea is to do a concrete driveway to the attached garage, and then gravel from there to the detached garage. Either way nothing will happen until Spring so realistically May.

The tractor belongs to the contractor. Its a handy little unit, but for snow removal we use a snow blower. The problem with using a bucket or plow is you eventually run out of places to put the snow. Snowfalls can vary drastically, and b/c of where we are positioned drifts become a major factor. 5 inches of snow usually equals 18 inch drifts in our driveway.

Thanks!

Yeah they keep increasing the standards here for how much insulation we need to use. Back in the 70's it was all 2x4 walls, then 2x6 walls became the standard. Now we are seeing 8 inch thick walls (two 2x4 walls offset from one another), although this isn't standard. With our house we had 2x6 walls already, but we got onto a government sponsored program where they would buy you 2 inch thick rigid foam insulation to add to your walls as long as you did the labour yourself. I remember a few cold nights in Devonport when I was wishing our place had a bit more insulation.

Thanks again on the cabinets, the awesome part about designing stuff yourself on the computer is you can see potential issues ahead of time. I saw that there was a massive waste of space in the cavity behind the TV, so I researched TV mounts until I found one that would allow us to access that area.

Countertops went in today. Very pleased with them.

IMG_3262.jpg

The shorter and narrower cabinet is complete with all its special features functioning.

IMG_3265.jpg

Popping the hidden lock causes the lid to open up on gas springs which reveals what will be my horizontal gun cabinet.

IMG_3264.jpg

Right hand cupboard houses a lockable ammunition drawer and a secondary drawer.

IMG_3263.jpg

Left hand cabinet has an electrical outlet and no bottom so that the air compressor can be wheeled into here and used without taking it out.

IMG_3266.jpg

Really like the way the place looks with just the under cabinet lighting on.

This garage is turning into something truly special. I haven't commented until now, but I've been following closely. The attention to detail and vision is unsurpassed.
