Fantastic work on the cabinets, now I want to scrap my off-the-shelf Menards metal cabinets. A few questions:
-what did you use for under-cabinet lighting?
-are the cabinets mounted directly to the floor, or did you leave room for possible Manitoba winter slop
-are you also integrating tool storage into the cabinet bases?

The under cabinet lighting is just xenon bulb puck lights. I bought them locally, but I've seen them for sale at the big box stores in the city. We used them in our kitchen renovation, and then again in my office, and just kept the trend going in our garage. We have a dimmer switch wired to a plug in one of the cabinets, and then the power pack for the puck lights is plugged into the outlet.

The cabinets are screwed to the wall, but they are resting on the floor as well. My entire garage floor is sloped to the center where there is a drain. You can sort of see the slope when you look at the cabinets. As long as the drain isn't plugged the water shouldn't ever back up far enough to get to the cabinets.

All the cabinets have adjustable shelving inside them. I haven't quite figured out where everything is going to go yet, but the cabinets will be something I will grow into. We built these same style cabinets in my office and they aren't even close to being full.

I also have a rolling tool box and rolling workbench with tool storage that will work in tandem with the cabinets.

Floor prep is completed and we started installing the race deck Saturday afternoon.

smVRKK5.jpg

We finished just over half the floor in less than 2 hours. This stuff installs really fast once you know what your doing.

I went with a pattern that's pretty familiar already here on Garage Journal. I tried to get creative and come up with my own designs, but despite my efforts I couldn't top this one so I blatantly copied it. Kudos to whoever came up with it first!

Now we just have to finish prepping the other half of the garage floor today, let it dry, and then install the rest of the race deck tomorrow.

The garage is so close to being done, getting very excited!

got a question, what do you have the opening under the window for? Seems like it would be a PITA to move everything that's on top to open it b/c I could not let that area stay clean, lol. I would always have **** on top!

very nice! I guess if you need to get it out in a rush, its for a reason that doesn't matter whats on top, LOL.

I just went back and read that post again and I noticed the part where you said its a gun cabinet. I missed it the first 3 or 4 times I looked, lol.

Well hopefully there isn't ever a situation where I would ever need one of my guns in a hurry.

There were a few reasons to build it the way we did. Keeping it hidden was very important to me for theft reasons and for aesthetic reasons. I already had plenty of drawers, so this design let me use the space above the compressor cabinet for a more useful purpose. Some of my guns are family heirlooms, and I wanted a way to store them that could also have them sort of on presentation if I wanted to show them to someone. A vertical gun cabinet wasn't going to work for me in this application for those reasons.

Please let us know how the RaceDeck works out for our Manitoba snow gumbo! I have been on the fence about RaceDeck, despite lots of positive threads, especially Rick (55 cadillac) swearing by it. Calgary weather is much different than ours.

Please send some up close pics once you start driving slop into the garage.

Thanks for the puck light suggestion..

Well done, the floor is looking great.

Thanks, I'll be honest, I had grown used to the concrete floor so I didn't immediately like the race deck just because its a change, but its growing on me very fast.

Good work there Ben.

I don't think there are many garages like this in Devonport!!!

haha, I can't recall anything like this in Devonport. Maybe in Launceston! lol

Thanks man, yours was the first post I had ever seen with that race deck floor design. I tried and failed to come up with something cooler than that, so I just went with it.

Any updated pics of the garage floor?

Also, how much was it to do the in floor heating? I am going to be building a hose soon with an attached garage around the same size and was thnking of in floor heating.

Should have updated pics soon, we actually took some of the race deck flooring out to do a bit more patching and leveling of the concrete slab underneath. I also need to do a major clean up in there. Lots of sawdust and concrete dust all over everything.

The style of in floor heating we did was very cost effective. I'm not sure of the price of the Pex line, but the rest of the system consisted of the manifold which you can buy or make yourself (mine was made on site), a small hot water tank (I bought mine from Canadian Tire, it was around $350), Grundfos circulating pump (I believe the one we used was $200), and a line voltage thermostat which I believe was $12. I also upgraded the element in the hot water tank to a 6000watt one that a local guy custom made for me. It was around $35. I think all in the infloor heating system cost roughly $1000.

I would say even if your on the fence about what style of heating you want to go with, its worth it to run the pex lines in your slab anyways. They are cheap, and you can't change your mind later if you don't put them in.

My reasoning to go with in floor heating rather than other methods is it works extremely well at thawing out vehicles since the heat transfers through the entire frame and body and melts all the snow off very quickly. Also with other heating methods, sometimes you get an effect where the snow melts off the vehicle and then the water freezes on the cold slab so you get an ice sheet.

Did those pex lines have to be in your build plans per code? Nice thread you have going here.

Beautiful build GB!! I'm going to look into that in floor heating for my 20x24 build at my cottage in northern Ontario. It can get down to -40C and I know my sled would like to sit on a warm floor. lol
Again....Great job!

Thanks, in floor heat is awesome for sleds. We used to have a wood stove in my parents garage, you could have it +20 celcius in that garage all night long, and there would still be snow on the sleds the next day.

You put that same sled on a heated pad and its completely thawed in a fraction of the time with no hidden snow anywhere.

Just a little update, I had a company come in and do all the eaves trough on the garage and house last week, and the contractor and I put the finishing touches on everything on Monday. Essentially other than a good cleaning my garage project is done until the ground thaws at which time we will finish the landscaping around it, attach the drainage system, and make a driveway.

Planning to take pics this weekend, so I will post a few once we've done that to show everything all finished up. A local company wants to use my garage for advertising their garage doors they supplied me with. Hoping I can score some keypad openers for my doors out of the deal, haha.

Just went through all 14 pages, damn what a build! Great work in every aspect. Those cabinets are gorgeous, especially with the touches like the gun storage and behind the TV mount. Great job! Lets see that floor all finished!

Very nice, Gentle Ben... I'll echo the sentiments on here that is sure looks like you've put a lot of thought and effort into this and you're fortunate to have an excellent, trustworthy contractor. I look forward to the next set of photos.

Great project.

Ready for some more cabinet pics....I am trying to decide between pre made stuff (Gladiator GarageWorks), high dollar custom metal (Bald Head Garage Cabinets) or a custom wood stuff like this.

Here are some pictures of the finished interior, I'll keep the explanations to a minimum and let the pictures do the talking.

I haven't had a chance to clean the walls or the floor yet, but its pointless until after spring anyways since we are tracking mud and sawdust in daily.

Not as clean as I would have hoped, but I got it done just for you guys, haha.

Thank you very much. Yes you are right, working with this contractor has been amazing. We feed off of eachother, and when we put our heads together we come up with really interesting ideas. I think he really enjoys doing stuff out of the ordinary.
