Great idea! Been thinking about something similar as most items i've seen at any stores are very sad. Can't believe how much snow you have already.

Thanks, yeah they seem to be working well so far. Some snow had made it into the window wells before we got the covers built, and either by trapping heat lost from the basement windows or heat from the sun, all the snow melted inside already.

Even with a fair amount of snow on top of them, a decent amount of light still makes it through, its a neat diffused light kind of effect.

My wife and I decided to get a snowblower for Christmas. With all the added driveway space on our property shoveling was just becoming way too big of a job. After one good blast of snow it took me and a helper nearly 3 hours to clear it all, and then you run out of places to push it as well.

I didn't want to cheap out on this so we went all out and bought the biggest and baddest walk behind snow blower we could find. A 2016 Husqvarna 330T. I realize snowblowers aren't that exciting, but with tracks they are kinda cool I guess?

nice! I was torn between the Husqvarna and an Ariens when I was in the market a few years back. I don't play the shoveling game, though. Enjoy it! I hope now that you have one, you never have to use it

Hey nice thread GB, just read the whole post.

Question on the novistone - it appears you ran this on one side (and front) of the new garage only and not the other side... Why?

Thanks for the compliments.

We decided not to use the novistone on the back and on the one side b/c of the fence that was already there in the back and the one we added down the side. You can't tell if we have it there or not so it wasn't worth the extra expense.

Missed this thread somehow. Great to read it all the way through and see your progression. Great job on the house and the garages. Would be interested to see what you did inside the house as well. I'm assuming the inside of your house is just as efficient and aesthetically pleasing as the garages. Kudos!

Thank you very much. Your not the first person to be interested in what we did in the house, I think I will post some pictures as I am pretty happy with what we did in there now that we are mostly finished. Just some small items we would like to add or change in the future.

We started our renovation pretty much the day after buying the house in the basement.

w08eYdv.jpg

We started with this.

IMG_7152.jpg

And turned it into this.

The end wall houses our entertainment system, with the TV, and all the electronics hidden inside of it. The cubby holes have LED's that we installed so they light up whatever color you want to match your sports teams or whatever. There are 11 speakers in the walls and ceiling.

IMG_7164.jpg

We also installed a bathroom in the basement, note the custom pine drop ceiling we came up with for the bathroom. One of my favorite features along with the jet shower.

IMG_7162.jpg

Heated tile floor and jet tub.

IMG_7168.jpg

Gotta have the TV for the soaker tub. The kids love it at bath time, and its nice to put the game on in there when guys are over so they don't miss any of the action when they are using the bathroom.

IMG_7156.jpg

Custom cabinets and desk incorporated a fridge into my office which is tucked into a corner of the basement living room area.

IMG_7157.jpg

We also added a guest bedroom.

IMG_7161.jpg

And my son's room. We have since added larger windows to both the basement bedrooms to exceed the minimum egress bylaws and get more natural light in the basement.

IMG_7176.jpg

IMG_7179.jpg

Moving upstairs we completely redid the entranceway, leveling the floor, adding heated tiles and a large walk in closet. We also added a window to the banister to open the area up a bit more. We also added LED lighting to the glass which you can see faintly in this photo which lights up the stairwell at night on an automatic timer.

AXq4z9D.jpg

Next on the list was the terrible 1980's golden oak kitchen that we couldn't afford to replace but we could afford to upgrade a little. We turned it from this.

To This.

IMG_7174.jpg

IMG_7175.jpg

The cupboards are original still, we just had a guy come in and restain them all. We also sent the doors out to get sanded and painted at his shop. Very happy with the results. We also added a concrete countertop, new sink, new appliances, a stainless and granite backsplash and new flooring.

IMG_7170.jpg

Funny story about this fridge. My contractor told me, you buy whatever size fridge you want and I will make it fit. So my wife and I picked out this monster (at least it seemed that way to us) and he worked his magic and true to his word he made it fit. he had to cut out the drywall behind it in the partition wall and counter sunk the fridge into it.

Our garage is going to be featured in a magazine, and I was asked to provide some more pictures of it. Here are a few of the photos that will be submitted.

Hats of to you sir. Just spent an hour reading through the thread and I don't care if my boss makes me stay late. Awesome. Great taste and execution. The basement rooms are fantastic. My wife would send us to the poor house if she saw these.

After seeing your house, that garage looks like a dump. Come on!!

Of course I'm kidding. I now see your inspiration for the garage design. Very nice. Both places belong in a magazine.

Thank you very much for the compliments, glad you enjoyed my build thread.

If only it was a real SCAR, but sadly my dream rifle is prohibited in Canada, so I have to settle for a .22 caliber clone.

The Polaris's are the real deal though, haha.

Wow! Great job inside the rest of the house. Love the Calvin and Hobbs mural.

Thanks dubber, I had put a few posts on local classified ads looking for an artist to do the work. I got some insane quotes like from one guy who wanted $8,000 to do it. Thankfully an artist who lives nearby (and who was also a huge Calvin & Hobbes fan) saw my ad. Her price was extremely reasonable, and when she was done we actually paid her extra b/c we felt her work warranted it.

Wow, outstanding remodel/build thread! I have to say, there's some serious talent with your cabinet building. I'm blown away with all the extra attention to detail in every portion of this remodel, and construction of your garage!

How deep is your attached single stall garage? Maybe it's just the camera, but it seems to have pretty good depth.

Thanks for sharing!

Loved what you did with the inside of the house, especially the basement....

Just showed the wife too (and that doesn't happen very often here - because she would normally say "NO - YOU'RE NOT HAVING THAT" :lol_hitti).

Keep up the great work.

Lyndon
Getting tired from everything she's had me doing on this long weekend.

Thank you, I wish I could take credit for the cabinet building but that was done by my contractor. I designed them in sketchup and he made them a reality. His last two clients have requested my exact cabinet designs, including the hidden gun safe, and one client did a carbon copy of my entire basement.

I tend to be a very details oriented person, when I show people our house they get overwhelmed with the amount of information I give them. There is a lot going on that you can see, but probably even more going on where you can't see. Basically if it could be hidden, we hid it, and if it could be automated, we automated it.

The attached garage is small but at 22ft deep its just enough for my wife's vehicle so you can walk all the way around it and still open the rear door. The parking lines we put in the race deck are awesome for getting the Jeep in just the right position every time.

I love this view through the doors when I am walking back to the house at night.

Thanks! I am lucky that my wife just pretty much let me run with whatever I wanted to do with all the renovations. She had a few requests such as not wanting to see any wires, which is why all the surround sound speakers are in the walls and ceiling of the basement.

Awesome!!!! keep us posted, super nice work!

Thanks, will do!

Last but not least I commissioned a local artist to come in and paint this mural on the wall of our baby room. Very pleased with how it turned out.

Your new build and remodel are amazing, and this Calvin and Hobbes mural is too cool. I think tomorrow I'll go through and re-read this entire thread. Thank you for sharing it all with us. :)

Thanks for the compliments. I am glad I found this forum, it gave me so many ideas, and keeping track of our progress here was really motivating as well.

Hey Ben,

I stopped by to grab one of your awesome pics to showcase on my thread and I noticed all the image links are broken. Any idea why?

I am not sure what happened. I have been away from the forums for a bit, I will do some investigating and figure out what happened.

Ben,

Any update on your photo's. Finally got my wife interested in looking at some of the garages that you and others have posted (as I plan my retirement garage) and was unable to show her yours - which I really like (especially the weapon storage . As someone who has been involved with various firearms throughout my career, really like what you have done to provide both yourself a great area to both work and store your weapons. Really hope that you are able to restore them so that I can show them to my wife so that she can better understand why I am so anxious to get started on my own garage and hideout (and eventual home for my '52 Chevy Hotrod Pickup). Thanks, John.

You're in luck. I like a lot of the work/ideas Gentle_Ben did to his garage so i saved all the pictures a long time ago.

I rar'd them and uploading them for you. Enjoy :)

Pythong,

Thank you for sharing the pictures. And Gentle Ben, thank you for creating a garage and workshop (as well as other items) that you can be truly proud of, and your willingness to share them with others – especially given the fact that you knowing shared them with the full knowledge that we may copy your ideas/handiwork accordingly. Just remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I plan to flatter you often......John.

Looks like the image host I was using started blocking Garage Journal for whatever reason. I spent a few hours and moved the images to another hosting service. Most of them have been restored, and when possible I uploaded them in a slightly higher resolution.

Hey grizzlyjmg, I've sorted out the problem with my photos, most of them are restored now, and by tonight I will have all of them fixed.

Thank you for the compliments on my garage. The gun case cabinet is one of my favorite features for sure. I think when we sell this house eventually, these cabinets will be coming with us.

If you want any pictures or close ups of anything to help convince your wife, let me know!

Thanks for creating a backup of my build photos. I was able to restore the majority of the photos in a bit better resolution now.

Thanks very much again for the compliments. I don't mind if people copy my ideas, I definitely borrowed from others as well for certain aspects of my garage and house. I was happy to share our build details, and reading the positive responses here really spurred us on when the going got a little rough sometimes.

Good luck with your build and hopefully you can share it on here as well!
