29 Gauge Ceiling

Hello fellow members. I had my 30x032x10 pole barn built in January 2012. I am finally getting around to ordering a metal ceiling and hanging the insulation. I have confirmed with the builder that my trusses can support either a metal or sheet rock ceiling.

My question is that when I called to inquire on pricing the 29 gauge (ceiling liner panels), and informed them that my span between each truss is 4' and that I am installing R30 fiberglass batts on top of the metal, he didn't think the metal could support the weight/span. This company actually deals in discounted or "seconds" metal. I called their sister company, which is well known pole barn builder and asked them, and they said that the 29 gauge metal and insulation on top would be fine.

Has anyone hung 29 gauge metal liner panels that span at least four feet, and if so were there any issues? Do you have insulation on top?

Happy New Year and thanks in advance!

Jeff

Liner panel is available in 29, 26 or 24. Four feet should be fine with 29. At four foot I would stitch the laps. Why batts? Blow in fiberglass and you will have a much better job. I bet you can get someone to blow the attic cheaper than you can buy the batts.

I can get 29 gauge at .38 a sq foot right now. I bought the fiberglass insulation batts (new in package) for about .26 a sq ft or a little cheaper, so I took that deal.

Stitch the laps? Screw the overlap of the two sheets I assaume? Is there a minimu/maximum overlap between two panels that overlap at the ends?

I just want to know if anyone has used it a 4' span without any issues...

You can see mine in my sig. Pretty sure its 29 also.

My trusses are 4' also. I'm going with blown in, but its not yet.

Pretty sure the metal will support me. I leaned on one pretty good just playing around and it didn't move at all.

Very nice build and finish! Love the sheet rock hoist you modified to hoist the panels!! I'm going to use the magnets idea to keep the screws aligned.

I'm down near Vineland, NJ.

Do you know if it was 29 gauge that you put up?

FYI, I left a screw out part way on mine at the ends and wrapped the string from screw to screw. You can also run it up the next course (truss chord) and back to the other end. If you look close, you can see the yellow string.

If you go with liner panels and blown in insulation, should a layer of plastic be put up before the panels to serve as a vapor barrier, or is it not needed?

Stack and drill the sheets. The screws will line up perfectly. Layout, check then check again.

Yeah I'm not good enough to do that. And one small mistake in measuring would scrap a whole pile of panels. I tried pulling a tape across the trusses, couldn't get an accurate measurement doing it by myself. Screws drive right in, predrilling would have added more time.

I have a 42 x 75 Morton Building and had them put the ceiling up, along with blown in insulation prep, part of which is the vapor barrier...

Since the insulation (R30) is faced, do I need a vapor barrier? I would be nervous about any condensation between the metal and insulation.
