How is the flooring holding up to welding over it? Do you do anything to protect it while welding? Considering options for my floor.
To be completely honest if you
really work in your garage I wouldn't go with racedeck. If your using it to park your toys and want a cool looking floor then I'm all for it. I've had it in my garage for a little over a year now and yes I looks awesome and I get tons of compliments but it's tough to keep looking that way. Splatter from a mig or stick welder will burn holes in it so now I use a fire blanket in the area I weld. But hey, what can you expect the tiles are plastic.
In addition the tiles are hard to keep clean. At first it wasn't a big deal to keep up with but now it's just annoying. When the floor gets messy with grease, oil etc unless you have to clean it up right away it becomes very difficult to remove. Almost like it soaks in. I'm all about cleaning up at the end of the day but to have to stop in the middle of a job to wipe up the floor is just crazy. I've had to get down on the floor with a scotch brite pad and degreaser to remove the stains and grime. mopping just wont do it. And my garage is over 800 sqft so image scrubbing the floor by hand after each job to keep its nice appearance.
Another problem I have had is if you need to spin the wheel moving your car in the garage the wheel will actually rip the floor right up in that area. My garage has a side entrance from the driveway so when I'm pulling into the lift sometimes I need to adjust my position a few times. I've had a whole 3'x6' section of the floor rip up and come apart. Fortunately they just clip back together but who wants to do that after spending thousands of a floor?
I can't have the doors open in the afternoon as the sun shines down on the front section of the floor and causes a lot of warping from the uneven heating of the tiles. the front tiles will bow about an inch or two off the concrete in a wave like patten across the front of the garage. sometimes even going back 2 or 3 tiles deep.
Lastly I have had to replace some tiles as they were badly damaged, Some from projects and a few from the floor ripping up and the clips broke. When I ordered the replacement tiles (12 or so) and they charged me around $65 total. I think $4 a tile. I had hoped maybe they would ask why I needed replacements, what happened, was I happy with the product, maybe a discount for having already installed their product and being a customer. but nothing... I was treated much better when I made my initial order to say the least. Even got the discount for being on GJ.
