With much delay here's some pics of my garage. I'm still in process of unpacking so the garage is a CF at the moment.

This area is too small for a car but will be my shop once I get organized.

First order of business is some upper cabinets near the garage door rails.

Oh and my skate spot (per request)

Sk8r: your car is nice and your son has talent and looks better. is that skate park yours in your backyard or at the local park?

welcome to our group and hope you enjoy reading and learning about a few things that you might not already know.

Oh man I wish that park was in my backyard! It's the local one down the street from me.

I'm learning a lot here for sure and I know I have a lot of work to get this place in order.

SK8R: start making a plan is the best way to start your garage organizing and there is plenty to read on this forum because we have all been where you are or maybe still are.

i'm sure if you really want a park like that in your own yard anything is possible. i'm sure some of the guys building 40 x 120's thought having a big shop garage would be nice when they were younger too.

cheers

My first goal is the bulk storage so I'm building some soffit cabinets. I think I need a small table saw though because getting wood cut at HD takes a heck of a lot of time.

Time to go research small table saws!

Sk8r: a table saw takes up a lot of room so be prepared. I've built a lot of things and finally picked up a very nice old Craftsman table saw last summer and still have yet to cut a board with it. a good miter saw and skill saw will do most any job until you are ready to dedicate half your garage to a wood shop. you'll also need to control the sawdust if you are going to park in the same garage.

if you can go maybe an hour before closing your wait time to have boards cut at HD will not be bad. i use them to cut full sheets because their panel saw is pretty accurate if you have a smart employee working it.

nice idea with the cabinets though

drivesitfar- thanks to this forum I did some research and learned a circular saw is what I need (and have). I can't see myself using a table saw much after I'm done with my cabinets and walk in closet. I'm more of a grease monkey so my shop will be set up to wrench in my 911 so you are right, no need to house a large saw. As it is my miter saw has been collecting dust for the past 2 years....

I think I just get over excited at the prospect of new tools, haha

Sk8r: i can't say I've never bought a tool and not used it and probably have a new tool or two still in the original packages that i'm sure i'll use one day.

glad you caught yourself before filling up your garage with a table saw.

Thanks. The car is an '84 with only 60k on the odometer. It's a fun car and very simple to wrench on

I need to finish the trim and then paint, but so far it's looking good. I will finish up the other side tomorrow once the tracks come in from McMaster.

I've begun the soffit cabinets in the tandem area. I intend to finish these off with sliding doors and some paint.

Right where the apex of the ladder there was a light in the wall.

I'd really like the light in the ceiling. The drywall in this area had ply wood as a backer. Any idea how to run power from this junction up to the ceilingit appears ceiling joists are perpendicular to this wall so maybe it's as easy as a snake?

I'm pretty handy but don't know how to run wire in this manner. Maybe the best choice is an electrician?

Sk8r: nice cabinets and use of the upper areas of your garage. since it sounds like you have power up in those cabinets in back of garage are you going to wire up a few lights underneath the cabinets?

keep up the great work.

I definitely want to add lights under the cabinets. I'm still trying to decide on what wall to use as my main bench area. Currently it's the wall on the right.

I think I may move my main bench to the back wall and then make some fold down benches on both side walls.

My electrician buddy came by to assess the general lack of lights and he's gonna work up a quote to add some outlets and lights. I'm almost thinking can lights since the garage is finished. I need to do some more thinking on that though.

I just scored this 3x 1.5 x6 HON cabinet off of CL for $80. Now I've gotta refinish that baby and find a home for it against one of these walls.

Sk8r: have you figured out the lighting yet? i saw one member bought some decent florescent lights from Costco that worked fine in his garage.

nice metal cabinet and it looks pretty stout.

keep up the good work

Well my electrician buddy is working up a quote but I'm short on cash so I may just rig up a few temporary lights for now. It's dark as hell in there at the moment. I'll check out those Costco lights, thanks!

Some more progress on the cabinets. I scored some sweet office cabinets that have a pretty cool look to them. I think I'll build a work bench underneath (I'm short) which will be on casters so I can pull it out further when necessary.

On a pitiful note, I still haven't rectified the lighting and wiring. I'm going to put in a few temporary fixtures for now until I have the funds to do it proper.

The front doors are this perforated metal. It looks cool in person but obviously won't help much with dust. All around I like them for now.

Sk8r: i really like the wood cabinets you built. the new cabinets don't fit my eye as well, but that just might be my OCD wanting everything symmetrical.

don't worry about the lights and they will come when you figure out a good plan. a good workbench is probably on high on the list so unless you want to build one may i suggest Craigslist.

sometimes you can even find one in the "free" section or check the tools section for a nice one. solid core doors make nice bench tops if you want to build one or 3 x 12's for an "old school" thick wood look.

keep at it and it will be a working garage soon enough.

Thanks! I agree the non-symmetry bothers me too as I'm OCD. The issue is really that I had no place to put them where they'd be symmetrical however I may add a little cubby on the right side where the ceiling bumps out. Then once it's all painted they may balance out better.

My work bench is currently a Costco shelf system where I put the 2 halves side by side. It's uselessly weak so it really serves as a light grade table.

I need to build a rugged bench for sure but I haven't settled on a style yet.

Sk8r: i bought this Costco 8 foot butcher block top bench a year or two ago for $200 so there might be some coming up on Craigslist because some young people actually used them as dining tables and kept them pristine.

i then found these cool metal organizers that a retiring TV repairman was using and they just fit underneath my bench.

how about instead of hanging all 3 of those black cabinets maybe just hang two of them and center them? then put the other one up in a different location.

keep up the good work

Good input! The good thing is the cabinets are currently mounted using a mounting plate similar to the gladiator system, so moving and repositioning the cabinets is easy.

Sk8r: here's a few better pictures of the cabinets and search for Cole in your Craigslist when you have time. BTW you are welcome and anytime my OCD helps yours i'm happy to do so.

cheers

So I need to paint these wood cabinets . The general recommendation is oil based primer and then oil based paint.

Given that this garage is attached to my house, and my kids' bedrooms are overhead, how bad should I expect fumes to be?

I can open up a 2 bay garage door and add a floor fan. Will this still piss off my pregnant wife?
