I am planning on building a narrow staircase along the wall.

Probably a 2' wide stairway and then through the 18" wide space between the truss and the wall. The opening will be a little small but it should work. I am using that space for the kids to play so maybe it will end up like the entrance to a big fort.

Here is a pic of the rough opening.

I am planning a 30x30 also and looking to use attic trusses with a 9/12 pitch. Also planning a lift on one side. Have not decided on 12.5' ceilings all the way across or part attic and part scissor truss. Either way, with that pitch, should give nice storage area. But I am struggling with how to access without eating a ton of floor space with full blown staircase.

Great space you have created. I like the lights, I have 8 tungsten bulbs in my reno at the moment, and have been searching for alternative lighting, like the idea of leds. Where did you buy those units.

I picked up the lights at Lowes, they have been great so far.

I blew in the insulation over the vaulted ceiling and on the sides of the loft. Now I have to finish the loft area and then all the insulation will be done.

Did you look at my doodle pad when you planned this shop?;)

We're looking at something much like your build. I might do scissor joists the whole way and then a mezz for storage. We might be using ICF block (as my Dad is a salesman for a company that makes it). Other than I'm putting an old Bradbury lift inside, your shop looks much like what I have floating around in my head...

Great job. I'll keep watching to see how many more of my secret plans you seem to have knowledge of...

Haha, I'm glad to hear you like it. Your icf idea would be great, I thought of using them but didn't want to spend the extra money.

I didn't think of using scissor or loft trusses until I saw a few shops on here with that setup. I'm sure glad I found them now. The vaulted ceiling makes it feel bigger, there is plenty of room for a hoist and it looks like a normal small in-town garage on the outside.

I have not worked on the shop very much but I have had it heated all winter and have been getting it full of tools and projects. Here is a few recent pics.

Nice build and documentation too! I'm looking to build a shop like this but with the garage door on the gable end due to snow in my area.
If you wouldn't mind I would like some ballpark figures on the cost of the build. TIA

I have right around 28,000 in the build right now. I hired out the concrete, the framing and traded some mechanic work for the electical work.

Love the shop i'm planning the same build at the moment except 30x40.With your truck on the lift and the lift all the way up, can the hood be open or does it have to be closed? Anything you'd do differently?

It is a little close but it does fit with the hood open. If the truck had a topper then the hood would have to be closed. The van is actually a little closer because you have to watch the back along with the hood.

If I could have built it bigger I would have, but it is very functional as is. I have a small lot so this was as big as I could go. 30x40 would be nice. The main problem I have is storing bulky tools like the engine hoist.

Our local hardware store has them on sale for about $400 a couple times a year. It is a 75000 btu unit made by procomp.

I bought them from Lowes. They were just under $50 each.

I know it has been a while since you have posted here, but any recent pics?

I'm building a 30x30 and this is the best example I've seen.

Thank you so much for sharing the build!

I have not done much more work on the shop. It is working great now but the loft needs to be finished and I have not put any trim on the interior.

I keep it heated all winter and use it steady. It has been awesome to have it and I would not want to go back to fixing my junk out in a snowbank! A floor drain would be a nice addition if I built it over but all in all I am happy with how it turned out.1e3b3758a9a1d619ab15e2b2ddb257d9.jpgecf239bfc3e6e71ef7b192f20dfc5078.jpgc5c53233705fadf9215edd85d4d16fcd.jpg8ec9d8afbdd5448baa196ef85fd51f8e.jpgb04893662bae6b8e775dc6b42d531a76.jpgbe727505ec6e32c2dad4b352250a08fa.jpg

Nice space, no idea how I missed your build. Realistically I'd love a space that big but when it comes down to knocking down my space and rebuilding it will be 24x 28 again.

Did you have any plans for this build? It is exactly what I was thinking of building in the UP Michigan. So the specs are basically the same in the snow belt.

I did not have any official plans. I wanted to have a shop that would fit a two post lift and was planning on doing a 12' wall. Then I saw a garage on here with half scissor trusses and half loft and really liked that system. (Also I would have needed a variance from the city to go higher than 10'). I checked with a local truss manufacturer and it was not that much more to go with the scissor and loft trusses than standard.

The walls are 2×6. 9'8" high (would have gone 10' but I needed to keep the total height under 18' or I would need a variance from the city).

The roof is a 6/12 pitch with 3/12 on the inside vaulted ceiling (that gave me 13'3" at the inside peak).

I did a 2' overhang all the way around.

The doors are 12' wide x 8'6" high (the tallest I could fit).
