Hi Guys,

I took a lot of useful information from this site over the last couple years and thought I would show what I've done. Appreciate all the help!
I hand sketched the drawings and submitted for permits early June 2020 and got approved July 7th. 32x44x12' with 7/12 attic trusses and a 12' lean to off one gable end. 2 - 10x10, 1 - 7x8 garage doors, 3 man doors and 3 windows (+2 windows in the attic).
The first day of actual work was June 20th, 2020. Removed trees and brush first. Saved 9 red oak and 2 cherry logs and had a guy bring his portable mill to my site after the rough digging was done. Stacked the lumber and let everything sit over the winter.

Easter weekend of 2021 I rented a mini and dug the footer and ditch back to the house.

Formed and poured the footer then started laying block by the end of April. Finished laying block and parging mid May. Grouted every cell with rebar as appropriate and set the anchor bolts.

Backfilled, insulated, ran pex and poured the pad in June.

At this point I had to make the call if I was going to go for it or not. Got the OK to frame with rough cut (to avoid the terrible lumber costs), so I went for it. Started framing early July and finished the sheathing early September, ready for trusses. I watched sheet prices like a hawk and ordered when pricing was reasonable.

I put off ordering the trusses as long as possible to let the price come back to reality. Trusses were delivered Sept 30th. I took the morning off work to make sure everything went OK with the delivery. I have a very steep gravel driveway. They didn't make it up. Turned into an all day ordeal, but we got them up and unloaded.

Crane scheduled for Oct 2nd, we got them all set and braced. Went to town finishing the roof framing and sheathing, finished the shingles Nov 13th.

Got the flooring down in the attic room and then put the foundation drains in so I could backfill before winter.

Early December I got the windows and doors in and started on the lean-to framing. Got the roof on the lean-to right after Christmas.

Started putting soffit up early January, but decided to call it quits for the winter.
Garage doors were done in February, installed in March 2022.

Framed the partition wall in early April.

Finished soffit and fascia by the end of April and moved on to siding. Wrapped that up end of May.

In June, added some stone veneer to cover the exposed block.

That's about it for outside work other than hanging lights.
Framed the stairs and ran the electrical in July. We have a 400 amp panel on the house. Tapped into the other set of lugs and ran a full 200A to the shop panel.

Insulated in August. R21 in the walls, R38 in the ceiling. Didn't do anything with the attic.
Finished hanging drywall by early September.

Started the long process of mudding. Took me forever. This is one item I should've hired out. Finished sanding last week (Oct 2022) and primed everything.

Got the ceiling painted so I put the lights up. Got the walls painted enough to get the boiler panel on the wall and just started it up yesterday.

So that's my 2+ year build wrapped into 3 forum posts. I plan to finish painting this week, get all the electrical put back together and then call for final inspection. From there I'll start trimming windows and doors using some of the oak that I cut back at the beginning.
The small bay will be for auto/motorcycle work, the big side will be my wood shop and overflow from the auto bay.
I've done everything myself except for a couple items. I had an electrician friend run the main power from the house panel to the shop panel. I took over from there and wired the shop. The garage doors were installed by the company they were purchased from. Lastly, seamless gutters should be installed in the next couple weeks. My Dad and Brother helped with all the concrete pours. Dad showed me how to lay block and then I mixed all the mud and laid every block. He also cut the sheathing while I nailed it on. Had a couple guys around when we set the trusses. My wife helped me stand up the walls. It's been fun, but I'm glad be wrapping it up. Itching to get back to some projects!

That is a really nice shop, you should be proud of this one. Nice work, I really like the large eaves and the lean-to.

How did you safely get the trusses up the driveway without any damage?

Following your build.
Long story short, he backed down a little from where he stopped, I hooked my F150 on and pulled him the rest of the way. Once we got moving, we just kept going. Couldn't believe it worked. It was an F550 dually, 4wd with a 32' gooseneck carrying 8500+ lbs of trusses. I was in 4 low and I'm pretty sure we had all tires spinning, but it worked. There's a lot more to that story, but we got it done.

Jay, since the garage doors are under the eaves, I went for 4' overhangs. This also gives me a nice storage space on the back side of the building. The concrete slabs are leftover from various pours. I had forms ready and emptied the truck into them. I just roughly set them in place while I had a skidsteer rented. I'll go back and level them up now that things have settled in.
The rakes hang over 2' on the gable ends.

I was going to ask if you did all the work but see that you did. I am so jealous of your energy to handle that much work. Oh, to be young again.

I used to do construction work in my early/mid twenties, but have been at a desk job for the last 12 years and went soft. Took some time to get back in shape. It was a lot of work, but spread out over 2+ years.
Final inspection was done today. Failed for the stair railing. Inspector just needs a photo when its done and then he'll cut the certificate of occupancy loose. Had the same inspector throughout the build. He's been great to work with, no issues at all.
Got the call today that the seamless gutters are going on tomorrow.
Finished painting the block and ran the water line to the sillcock. Moved some equipment out of the basement into the shop to start making window and door trim. When the trim is done I'll move my bench and other "stuff" in. I'm planning to build a corner bench under the two windows in the attached picture to match my freestanding bench. I'll post some pictures when I get it moved up. It's a shaker style cabinet bench I built 5 or 6 years ago from Benchcrafted plans. Used their vise hardware, very nice.

Got the stair modifications done and sent the photos off to the inspector this morning. That should wrap up the final inspection.
Guys got the gutters on in 2 hours Friday morning, glad to have that done.
Worked on trim a little Sunday, nothing worth showing.

No photos for this update. Still slowly working at the window and door trim. Received the Cert of Occupancy in the mail last week, so it's official. Picked up some phone line, ring down circuit and a couple no dial phones. Hoping to get the wire pulled Saturday, but probably won't have time to get everything connected. Doing a 2 way phone system between the house and the shop.
I can barely pick up the house wifi in the shop so I got some Cat6 and an access point. I actually got 2 access points and set one up in the house already. Our outdoor camera was at the edge of the wifi range and would drop out occasionally. Since adding the access point closer to the camera it hasn't dropped once.
Hopefully the next update will be pictures of finished trim work.

Busy over the holidays with the family so it's been slow going. Got a couple good days in though and got all of the trim on. The trim at the transition from block to drywall will get painted, hoping to work on it this week after work. Put up the vinyl strip doors in the partition wall yesterday. Should keep the dust from the wood shop side out of the auto bay. I got some tin signs for Christmas and had a few minutes to hang them up yesterday too. I have my eye on some others that I like.
Closing in now, time to make a punch list.
