36x47 workshop

I finally ran out of space in my previous 3 car garage and got a new place with 3 garages. A 2 car, 4 car and the topic of this thread, 36x47.

It's a Wick pole building and I'm going to be preparing it for use as my new workshop for building my 57 Eldorado Brougham.

Good part is I have some tools already. 2 post lift, tig welder, mag brake, bead roller, band saw/etc.

Bad news is this is just a basic building and is going to require a lot of work to get into usable shape.

First problem is, only 8ft walls. I debated on how to address this for a long time and finally decided to leave most of the building as-is but replace the last 3 trusses in the building with laminated plywood trusses from Starwood.

Plan is to sister them to the existing trusses then remove everything from the original trusses except the top chords.

This will give me another 41 inches of clearance at the center of the building.

2 post lift will then of course be centered under the peak of the building and oriented towards the back wall. (I'll have 7-8ft between the front of the car and the wall).

Going to spray foam the building and leave the ceiling/trusses exposed but painted.

I'm also considering 36ft long LVL's to put up next to the lower chords of the first 2 trusses in order to have some storage above.

That's it for now I suppose. Just thought I would start a thread since I finally ordered the trusses and will be making some process.

Of course. :) For those not familiar the Eldorado Brougham was made from 57-60. The first generation was 57 and 58, with 400 made in 57 and 304 made in 58. Stainless steel roof, suicide doors, power opening/closing trunk. Stainless magnetic tumblers and air suspension were a few notable features.

This car is being built as a "resto mod". Original styling with modern mechanicals. Twin turbo Cadillac LSA engine. Roadster shop chassis, front and rear vintage air systems, One-off 20" wheels/etc.

I called Wick about adding the LVL's and they said when they build them for light storage they reinforce the truss plate areas with 1/2 osb and construction glue/nails. I'm told the wood is strong enough but the failure point would be the connections.

So, while I'm waiting on the other trusses I'm starting to reinforce the first two so I can have some storage up there.

Cool place and Eldorado! Looking forward to seeing your shop come together! Any pics of the other 2 garages you have on your property? Sounds like a good find!

I've seen your build up on Ls1tech!

Nice looking Cadillac and the shop looks awesome - all that space for activities!

I've been through Lake Villa plenty of times drove a bit north of there from Poplar Grove to I94 on 173 down to Deerfield everyday - now that commute sucked!

Keep up the shop updates.

I'll second the dream setup comment. The privacy in the rear shop is great. With a tall fence you wouldn't even know it's there! Now don't tell us you have a tunnel between all three, that would be too much.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words!

LeadFootDriver- No tunnel LOL but there is a wrap around deck connecting the first two garages in the rear. Fence isn't really necessary for privacy, entire perimeter of the property has 40-80ft deep dense trees. From the road you can't see anything.

don long- Just started reading your thread, any pics of your Biarritz in there? That place is epic! I have a 59 Cadillac series 62 convertible as well. Fun driving an old vert Caddy :)

Well, I haven't made a ton of progress. Was holding off a bit on the spending while I had 2 mortgages but just closed on the previous house so all is well again.

I trenched through the yard and ran a gas line out there. Paid an electrician friend to run 220 out to a sub panel so that is done.

I also received the new trusses from Starwood today. Very nicely made!

The "posts" are actually 3 2x6's attached together. I planned to sister the new trusses to the old ones and cut the outer 2x6's of the post to the height that would allow the new truss to set on top of it. I could just bolt it through like that but thought maybe it would be better to sandwich another 2x6 to the outside of the new truss?

It would then be above the slab though so I'm not sure if that is acceptable.

Installed!

Too late in the year to finish electrical and do spray foam so I will start on it again in the spring.

Thanks!

Well it is warm enough now so I'm back to work. I finished reinforcing the truss plates with 1/2 OSB glued and screwed. (This was to strengthen them for light storage). The trusses are 2x8 top and bottom chord and 2x4 webs. Trying to decide if I should put a support pole under the second truss but I only have room for one 12ft out from the wall while leaving enough room to drive to the lift.

Also I lifted the 2 post lift columns into place (not light!) and figured out it's positioning. Right now the center of the columns are 13.5 feet from the wall. This leaves 6ft 4in in front of the car and the wall. (3ft 4in between car and 3ft deep work bench).

Thanks Don. White hides a lot, it's actually pretty beat up and weathered. (I guess sitting for 35 years takes its toll).

I love your Biarritz!! (and your shop). 50's Cadillacs are such great cars. I'm continually surprised at how well they drive and how good they were built.

Nice shop you've got squeezed into the 'Villa.. I work in Antioch--just re-located up to Union Grove FROM Antioch... You've got a very nice setup. I"ll be watching your Cad-build..

Curious-what is the cost comparison of those Starwood Trusses compared to a scissor-like truss?? Those are not only really handsome designs with their arched and raised bottom cords, but are nice in that they raise your ceiling height considerably!

Beautiful place you have there as well as cars.

When I was a boy we went to Lake Villa often for German picnics and such, on the way home we would stop at Bell orchards to pick apples. That was when the main building and store were on the corner. Alot has changed since then.

Those trusses look good.
Regarding the lift placement you mentioned, if you ever pull an engine from a car on the lift with a engine hoist, you may need to keep the work bench mobile / on wheels to make room to back the engine hoist away from the car.

Thanks guys!

John, the three trusses were $2200 delivered. Quite a bit more expensive than scissor trusses but these gave me the most height and I needed every last bit of it. (I think scissor trusses were 10 inches lower on the bottom chord).

upndown, II never heard of Bell so I looked it up. Pretty cool place and yes I'm sure a lot has changed since back then :)

Boosted1, yes good call. I don't plan on having any built in benches. All movable and will just have a tool box in front of the car.

Thanks for the reply.. I know the trusses are one of the necessary "larger" costs of building the structure correctly--those are very nice.. Definitely something I'll look at when the time comes..

Thanks guys! A bit more progress. I built some decking for light storage within the 2 original trusses.

Also the entire building was insulated with closed cell spray foam yesterday. I originally planned to attach steel panels directly to the roof perlins but the foam ended up being a bit thicker than I expected so that isn't happening.

I think I may do a pine ceiling, attaching the boards across/under the edge of the top truss chords. (and still white steel on the walls).

As for heat and a/c, I think I'm going to do a package unit outside.

I picked up some lumber to start framing for interior steel.

I'm doing white on the ceiling and the walls. (And I think a gloss white floor as well).

Also installed the attic ladder for my light storage area.

did you use an open cell or closed cell insulation and would you mind sharing the cost?

thanks
