Has anyone tried cleaning up old tools with a 3m radial disc (https://www.zoro.com/scotch-brite-r...s8H-1a5AQ3_c_eG8o6SHF4I6lxB9axoCHtkQAvD_BwE)? Have read where there is no balancing needed for these and are infinitely safer than a wire wheel (on a pedestal grinder). Just looking to clean up old grime tools etc. Have had to mess with balancing the wire wheels for far too long.....even some of the more expensive one. Thoughts?

Someone on the Vise Repair thread had recommended this type of wheel, so I got a medium and fine. Mounted on a variable speed Dayton buffer.

Very happy with how these work on machine parts. Not sure how well they would work on heavy rust / pitting.

The roloc bristle discs work very well also

There is an existing thread, on rust removal, where @macgee got a bunch of people hooked on them. Lots of before and after shots, tips and techniques. Buried in about 1 year ago, on a lonnnnggggg thread.

My searching abilities are compromised right now. Wearing gloves and safety glasses, and waiting for others, else I'd link it for you.

I think 220 was the wheel grit we bought.

Edit, this thread, about here is where he got me hooked.

Yeah I bought one. It's my final operation wheel, after the wire wheel has done all it can do. Get a little light polish going.

Am I the only one who doesn't bother balancing wire wheels?

Haven’t tried the radial disc, but I use these 3M Roloc Bristle discs for cleaning up tools and they are totally brilliant.

On a lot of steel tools I hit them with a wire brush first, then use coarse and fine roloc bristle discs. They’re great to use, much more forgiving than a wire wheel, superb for shifting corrosion, and give a great finish.

I think a pair of those radial discs, or maybe one wire wheel and one radial disc, would be a perfect set up!

They don't look like they'd grab and bite as hard as wire wheels do. Or throw little slivers of wire into your shirt while you work. Might have to look into these.
