Im definitely not a midwestern farmer by any means, had to pull off to let a combine pass me last week while I was down south of Knoxville. Always makes me happy to see giant machinery on the road between fields. Never been involved in a harvest of any sort, looks like a cool experience to me though.

Helping out by pulling over is always appreciated! Most operators are good and are cognizant of traffic around them and do their best to pull over and let pass as it's safe but it can be tough as the machines are rather large....if we center it on the highway it almost touches both white lines. We try and run the truck with the header trailer on it behind the combine so we can holler on the radio when traffic is trying to pass. And thank goodness we are in rural america where its common....I don't envy the guys running this **** through suburbs to get that quarter section that hasn't been sold off and converted to houses yet...that does not look like fun

If you're ever in fly over country in fall and want to give it a try look me up....all the equipment has "trainee seats" so riding along is pretty comfortable!

It arrived in July so no ice yet to be forced to try it out on. The DT12 automated manual transmission does open up options for additional drivers, honestly was more for the improved mileage and operator comfort. Right now it's sitting about 3/4 of a mpg better than the 2018 truck which is the next newest. Think it's 3 yrs old with 300k miles so it's the newest and most comfortable ride we've got. Dad sometimes says if he wanted to 'row' for fun he'd get a rowboat, but if there is a viable, worthwhile replacement that makes the grain runs easier he's all for it. Integrated jake brake on the shifter stalk on right side of the steering wheel is handier then reaching for a switch in the console, lot quieter and smoother ride...coupled with the newest trailer makes it the first one out of the lot. It's tuned to 550 HP so it pulls the couple of substantial hills we've got easily....not having to run the gears down to 4th by hand helps as well!

Logan, it's probably the nostalgia for me more than anything. I don't disagree with the ergonomic layout of the everything. My dad started trucking in the early 60s, and that trucking fueled our farming/ranching habit. 9/10/13/18 speeds have just become an extension of my arm over the years. Dog leg 15s with the OD up in the dash can pound sand 😆

Same reason I don't like ISO skid steer controls. I prefer to run the bucket/mast with my feet 🤷🏼‍♂️

So where is the 40 yd dumpster at?

Oh wait, that's my garage that needs the 40 yd dumpster.

carry on!

Man I wish we had gotten at least a 20 yd for the house cleanout at the father in laws ..we filled a 12 with stuff left over....would have loved to have dumped 3 or 4 yds from my house into it! But we have fall cleanup days later this month so I can get several loads there

On the cleaning front....opened up the dust collector for the first time

Main collector

20251006_183628.jpg

First filter
20251006_183918.jpg

2nd filter

20251012_175754.jpg

Haven't pulled the third can down but disappointed with the limited stuff in the main cyclone can and the amount of stuff in the filter bottoms. Will need to check my airspeed on it and figure out if it's just too fast and limiting how much stuff falls out...or more a reflection of this being mostly finer table saw and sander dust....more to come

But it does work well to make paint stew so I can landfill leftover paint

Little bit of organization progress.....picked up these Durhams a couple months ago but didn't like where they had landed. Repurposed the mobile base from the planer and it fits ok under the drill press. The top cabinet is now hitting a pin for locking the angle adjustment on the drill press so it doesn't roll as far back as I want it to. But at least got the cutout cleaned up, small roundover on the edges and then the drawer units bolted down.

hardwareholder2.JPG

Pick below was before the cutout was made on the base...it's now almost flush with the front of the drill press
hardwareholder1.JPG

With that kinda improved...working to move more of the misc hardware that's been scattered about into it...especially out of what I want to be the hand tool workbench but has been a catch all. So the top drawer got mostly cleaned up....so some leftover kaizen foam and top drawer is at least improved

drawer1.JPG

Caliper isn't cut out yet. I may come back later and play with these inserts being printed with the help of ToolTrace.ai but I was trying to make progress so didn't want to stop and try and learn something else at that moment.

In the typical total change of topic....must have add on's for a '72 Nova Coupe....driver not a show car....and go!

I should probably put a cap on it....less involved (and costly) than a LS swap please :)

Showing up early November...."early inheritance" for my wife from my father in law(my wife's stepdad) as they've got 7 cars right now and at 80 yrs (but looks more 65) has decided it's time to trim the fleet a bit. Should be rust free as it's spent most of it's life in the south, originally a 307 CI, swapped at some point to a 350 with a mild cam. It's a driver, it's got some faded paint from life in the desert but won't feel bad actually driving it.

It'll winter in a storage unit a couple miles away but wouldn't mind a couple weekends of work on it over the winter if I can come up with a good project list and some "less bad" weather where I can kick the wife's ride into the driveway for the weekend. Come spring we'll probably drop the storage unit and it can hang in the driveway from April to November.

I haven't driven this car in probably 6 years if not longer....so my memory is a bit faint but initial thoughts for projects to make it more smiles and easy driving per mile include:

-Keyless entry....manual windows are fine for me. Not sure I care about remote start on it
-Stereo upgrade...it's spent 20+ years in Vegas...guessing the existing speakers are shot...so new speakers plus amp/sub? Maybe just start with speakers and head unit
-Exhaust perhaps
-Believe it's still got drum brakes on all 4 corners, so at minimum upgrade to disc on front...but if I do the front I don't see the reason to not do the rears
-Evaluate handling/corner/body roll and figure out if suspension stuff would be good
-Car seat/booster seats in the back

What else should I be looking at?

Nice color combo!

I'd give it a good shake down, get all the basics right. Full fluid exchange...and I mean all of it. Then decide what you want more of, or where the changes need to occur.

Skip the keyless entry, there's something satisfying about using the round key to unlock the doors/trunk, and the square key to start it.

Yea when I read the keyless entry, I was taken aback by that. Just something about using the keys and not worrying about electrical **** failing. If the car is a retro-mod deal where the whole drivetrain is replaced and the interior is decked out with the latest electrical gadgets and so on, then I would add the keyless entry. Only reason I have power window and lock in the Camaro is because it came with them.

I forgot to add changing of the fluid, but I would just drive it and fix any issues that pops up as you go. If something needs to be repaired but you decide you want to upgrade to make the ride a more enjoyable experience, then I would upgrade.

Don't shoot the messenger but this is how it's done......(One of my buddies cars, he's since moved on to an older Nova. Same engine platform but it has two snails 😁).

Not sure I have the bank account for the tire bill that would come with that as I know I don't have the willpower to not mash the long skinny pedal!

Agreed on the satisfying part....however with 4 and 6 yr old I don't want to have to listen to their incessant hollering of "unlock the door daddy" as I lean over from the interior or walk around the exterior....so it's more a sanity measure then anything.

And absolutely on the fluid change...not sure on tire age but expecting there will be a couple grand in fluids, parts and probably a set of tires in the first year ...plus any additions it gets. The father in law is pretty particular on his cars so it won't surprise me if it shows up with new rubber.

Driving it back here as a shakedown trip crossed my mind....but then remembered I don't have that much free time right now!

That color combo is fantastic, congrats on a inheriting such a cool car!

Like others have said, get the fluids all changed, I'm with you on doing new brakes on all 4 corners at some point, but seems like a car like that would be fun to just drive and let it tell you what the next project should be, might help with scope creep!

Fluids change for sure as others have mentioned. Front discs are a great idea and will give you more confidence when driving. With a good proportioning system, not sure you need to swap the rear drums out, but your choice.
I’m guessing the paint will have some contamination in it. You can check by running your bare fingers lightly over the paint- if you feel anything other then baby’s but smooth, it likely needs a correction. Start with clay barring the entire car (I use Griot’s Garage surface prep mitt - https://www.griotsgarage.com/fine-surface-prep-mitt/ - much easier to use than an actual clay bar and does just as god a job. Then onto paint correction using as mild a polish as you can to get the swirl marks and minor scratches out. Again, I like the Griot’s Garage products. You may find you can bring back some of the shine with this process.
Good luck and keep us posted with pics. Getting a new addition is always fun - ask me how I know!!

I’d wonder what 350 is in it. If it’s like an 80s smogger out of a truck (which is the most likely) a good upgrade would be a vortec 350. Need a carb adapter intake for it but will bolt in.
You can spend some money then and throw heads and a cam in though the vortec heads are very decent for a driver.

In good news .... It's not a large room and is over half done....

Screenshot_20251018_125202_Gallery.jpg

In bad news I was originally thinking it would've been all done by lunch but that was a poor target that was them obliterated by some worse then anticipated conditions

Oh well...it's hopefully the last work day at the inlaws house as it's under contract now and supposedly closing in 2 weeks which I don't think is possible....but if it's gone in 4 weeks I'll be happy

Did they ask you to remove it in the contract?

Was damaged due to an old water leak that was fixed but floor was never repaired. The damage had been covered by a storage cabinet so I wasn't aware of it, should have done a better walk thru after it was fully empty. It got cited in some feedback on some of the showings so I stopped and saw it and yeah...it needed fixed. Inspection is tomorrow so need it fixed before that...so lot of scraping to remove existing, subfloor repair and it's now ready for new floor(sheet vinyl) to be installed tonight after kids go to bed. Hoping to be done by 10 pm....it's a 12 x 7 space so no seams but is getting glued down... My back is reminding me why I will never fall back to a job as a full time flooring installer

Ugh ... skylights...great for roofers and drywall folks....the rest of us....yeah not so great. I also will call out most skylights are fine...it's the installation that is routinely jacked up. Here I'm just cleaning up sloppy texture from when it was built 40 years ago

Screenshot_20251019_101541_Gallery.jpg

Floor is visible thru the door ...looks better in dim light. The subfloor inconsistency telegraphed thru more than expected. Probably should have had some 1/4" underlayment stapled down, seams feathered then installed. But it's a three seasons room...and it's better then before

And a test of some basic gridfinity trays for ratchet storage ..I may have more 3/8" standard length non flex ratchets then needed
Logan, that looks like a perfectly acceptable number. Unless, like me, you have multiple locations for them (so it's not so obvious we have a problem). I keep most in my SAE tool chest, others in my Metric tool box and some in my Shed toolbox. It also helps to keep the majority in a very high drawer that only you can see without a stool or stepladder.

This same approach is good for red, yellow, gray, green and other obvious color battery tools. Keeping all of them in one place definitely looks bad but if some are in drawers, some hang on the wall while others hide in PVC tubes or live in another building helps make it look better. My open display of Milwaukee M12 and M18 tools totals 14, which seems reasonable. The twenty hiding out of sight not so much.

Likely been at least a year ago I decommissioned my chopsaw/miter saw station...haven't missed it yet. But I chopped up one of the cabinets with drawers to fit in another cubby so I didn't have to totally part ways with the first real piece of shop furniture I built in the winter or 2008
Logan, I came across a wooden workbench at Costco two decades ago. It wouldn't really fit my needs in the garage or shed but I had to show it to Liane. She immediately told me to buy it and it has been in the kitchen ever since. You can never have too many cabinets in the kitchen. I have since installed the wooden vise to the end because it came in the box with the bench.

The propane fire pits look cool but dont do it for me for some reason. I have a solostove for outdoor fires and the kids love it. I like it enough I almost spent 90 dollars for the tiny tabletop on to put on my screened in porch table.

I got something similar and we don’t even use it.

Yeah, that was the discussion driving back home. Too cold to use it from Dec to Feb....too hot in the summer....don't host that many gatherings to get excited about the minimum 20k it would be to do it if we paid someone.....so I think the SoloStove we've got will continue to win the day by rolling it out to the driveway or back yard as weather and wood pile dictates

Random update time

Almost have the estate house sold.... supposedly closes this week...I'm skeptical as I've never heard of a 2 week close on an FHA loan but they're acting like it's happening. There is a wheelchair lift in the house to get up 4 or so steps at the front and the push pads on the switches are showing their years of weather exposure

20251026_104738.jpg

That's the best looking...one is half gone. 15 min in CAD, 2 hrs to print 5 of them...10 min to get settings on the laser and got three to install tomorrow

20251027_204130.jpg

Finished the printed pickle army for my wife's mom group party...I just shake my head and do what I'm told and try not to ask why

20251025_211820.jpg

A few more got added to the box ..think there are 16 total

In shades of green ..added Bluetooth to this thing

20251027_205251.jpg

Cause I've found I really like the vac and the remote on/off at the hose end is super handy. As expected it was super simple...remove two screws ..drop in Bluetooth module and put screws back in, then strap button on the hose...should be a nice improvement for general cleaning stuff

Storage unit is reserved for the Nova...sounds like it's here in 2 weeks. The unit is a couple miles away so if we get a warm spell it's not far away. Did get some of the synthetic clay as recommended by @Swanny1953, went with the pad instead of mitt but looking forward to trying it...didn't realize they had synthetic clay...thanks sir!

20251027_205718.jpg

Few minor workshop improvement projects in the works, nothing crazy or as dramatic as getting rid of half the stuff like I should probably do....

I am super happy with the Griot's products I have used. My favorites are their HD Wheel Cleaner and Ceramic Speed Shine.

54886110239_a786c5006e_h.jpg

I've found the key to good results for me with the speed shine is constantly switching to a dry microfibre. I used 11 towels on the car this past weekend so I was always using new, clean and dry. Also, make sure the whole car is dry (leaf blower to the rescue) as any water from a window seal, nook, crany, sunroof felt, etc, will streak it up and you'll need to redo that area. The results are stunning with minimal effort. Paint prep is important before the speed shine.

3d printed push pads got installed....an improvement and not broken so scratch that off the list

Screenshot_20251029_222700_Photos.jpg

Selling the house means the truck that was parked there had to find a new home so it's in the garage so I can get it ready to sell. Got some paint issues to try and clean up

Screenshot_20251029_222731_Photos.jpg

But made progress getting the power lift chair/mobility seat out and the original back in

20251029_210409.jpg

Should have used the hydraulic lift table getting it out... that thing is stout. But it's out... if anyone needs a very lightly used Braun Turny Evo that does this
