^303 works great when applied sparingly and buffed off with a clean microfiber. I use it on everything from plastic to rubber, and the only time it gives me any fuss is when I put it on too heavy and don't buff off after application.

Thanks for the tip Jon!

Sadly when GM went to the new LT architecture engine family they started to go down hill. You almost can't kill an LS.

There are quite a few good mid level scanners now for under $500.

Bret

Long live the LS!

I spent some downtime looking at Innova and Autel options. Looks like lots of choices and I don't need to do anything with programming keys or tpms sensors etc so a fair number will probably do what I want.

Did get thermostat in and some coolant drained/swapped(just draining from radiator petcock), need to do the radiator drain a couple more times to feel better about how much fluid was changed. Will probably throw an oil change at it as well since I picked up a new filter, then see if the code returns after I cleared it today.

Logan I have an Autel 808 ( I believe) that I bought off my wifes cousin last year for a deal. I have been really happy with the functionality of it and being able to actuate all kinds of functions to diagnose some of the crazy stuff I work on. I was talkin to the Autel rep when the new Asvance auto I use opened up and he was trying to sell me on their 6k scanner. As nice as it was it was just more than I could justify at the time. But for 300- 400 you can grab the baseline Autel and do more than any other basic scanner can.

Thanks for chiming in with a review, that was one I was looking at! If I'm wanting to be able to better see live data feels like the larger screen area of the table size is better than the smaller models which puts Innova probably out of the game as their tablet sized offering isn't as "robust" as Autel. Looks like I can get it in a couple places locally if something comes up and I need it same day which hopefully doesn't happen!

I picked up an Autel unit on sale on eBay. It's been pretty good. I don't remember the exact model, but it's normally a $1k-ish scanner and I paid around $400. It has been pretty good so far, interface is a bit clunky, but for the money I'm satisfied.

Autel MaxiPro MP808 BT Pro is the model I have, I was able to find it in my orders.

It has done quite of bit of things on older vehicles that surprised me. It bled the ABS on my Suburban and reset the tire sizes on my son's old 1998 Ranger. I believe @zmotorsports also has an Autel unit on top of his SnapOn Modis.

Thanks for confirming Marc...that's the 2nd vote for the Autel 808! At this point the oldest thing I've got is a 2014 and if something older gets added it'll be pre-OBD1 so I won't need to add any of the OBD1 adapters. I went ahead and at least set a FB Marketplace alert for Autel stuff so maybe something will come up, but if not the price tag isn't horrible if it helps diagnose what's likely a $3k+ fix at a shop

Snow day tomorrow for the kids....so the liklihood of that pushed me to get this out of the garage and installed. One less thing to bump and run into out there if I am forced to take one or both out there if Momma needs to make some work calls. The sacrifices we all make....

20250211_190705.jpg

Not sure if have enough **** out to hang a shelf. Laser on the pole to get the height of the other one transferred over from opposite wall. Center bracket is in a stud, but outer 2 are drywall anchors as the spacing i thought I wanted didn't work with stud layout...go figure.

Toal of 82" long and mounted high enough I can't see the dust so it means its always clean!

Against my better judgement, I made it to work today. I've had worse commutes. Its the getting home part that might be difficult.
Definitely cold here too.

Kind of in the same boat here...snow is still coming down pretty good. I've got other obligations in town @ 6pm tonight they haven't cancelled yet, so that is just adding to it.

I didn't pull the tractor in the shop last night...so I'm sure it will protest if I try and start it.

I don't know about your house but based on my coworker comments your office got more snow then we have so far. Still coming down, wife decided she would rather go to work then stay home with me and the 2 kids....lol. At 8 am the interstate wasn't too bad for her but 2 of her coworkers had issues getting in so wasn't smooth sailing for all. I've seen garbage truck come thru and plow truck 2x now in the neighborhood so the main streets here probably aren't terrible. So far the wind is calm and it seems to be laying pretty flat which is helping a lot.

Nothing 8 hours on the block heater and ether won't fix! Dad did his best anti-snow dance by sticking the skidder and grader in the shop on Monday so they were prepared...it wasn't good enough but far better then a month ago with the 16" snowfall!!

LOL

My wife works at 132nd & Dodge and she had no issues and her boss who comes in from the west on Dodge had no issues...so maybe your guy's neighborhood was just particularly nasty! Or 275 into Fremont just scared him too much!

Probably a 3d printing dust collector overload here:

Inside image of "tree supports" on how it creates them to support the later layers

Almost done...
180 3.jpg

Got some funny printing artifacts/imperfections in this one

For the impatient printing in a basement...the cold concrete slab works great as a heat sink to cool off the plate so prints pop off easier/faster

And where it goes:
180 5.jpg

180 6.jpg

Those prints are looking great!

Thanks! I get to reprint that last 90 degree elbow....

180 7.jpg

Got a bit too aggressive on the bandsaw trying to make it shorter....oops. So that'll be the overnight print I guess!

Cool dust collection work! I've yet to print any tubes/cylinders like that but am excited to try when the need arises. I had the printer running most of the weekend on various organizational related things, and I still feel really fortunate to have the A1 at my disposal to turn ideas into physical objects.

Regrinding the impatient cooling down time I solved that by just ordering another build plate so I can swap them out and not have down time printing (although that really doesn't work if you simply want to use your new part ASAP!)

Last week or two have been busy between 3 days of no school thanks to weather, an overnight work trip and trying to wrap up a bunch of work projects as I'm officially unemployed this week for the first time since graduating college. New job starts next week....so long list of "stuff" I want to get done this week....will see how much of it actually gets done.

Couple minor projects in the mean time

Trying to get some assorted stuff up off the flat surfaces and where it's a bit more recognizable. Glove holders, plier rack, containers for the tape cartridges for the label makers etc.

tool wall.jpg

Reading up on some sharpening stuff for wood butcher tools got me motivated enough to pull down one of the grinders and work to get it back in service. I don't remember where I picked this up but it was a basically new old stock, 6" Baldor

grinder 1.jpg

Some tapped holes needed some cleanup, date stamp on the box with the eye shields (never installed) made me chuckle a bit

grinder date.jpg

Not ready to go yet...need to 3d print a slightly improved shaft bushing then should be able to give it a try....after I finish getting rid of the protective film on the almost 40 year old eye shields

Looking good. Where did you get the glove clips? Are they a 3D print or something purchased?

Thanks!

I saw a commercial version somewhere but couldn't find them again when I wanted, these are printed in PLA

Seem to work pretty well, for bulkier/heavier gloves they may not have enough of a throat but for up to what I'm calling a medium thickness lined leather glove they have worked pretty well

Well that fiasco took longer then I planned

Pulled 2 new ethernet cables as needed one for each doorbell camera and the separate chime speaker. Even after multiple redo's of both ends, I couldn't get rid of an open pair of wires on one cable and 3 opens on the other. Cable from different boxes....thought it pulled cleanly but after an hour of beating my head against the wall I gave up and decided I would strip those cables out the next day and rerun. The rerun was easy and short all thru unfinished ceiling, so mostly an annoyance factor but when I finally got a cable test to pass I was at least relieved

20250225_095156.jpg

Camera mount got installed, need to touch up the paint but it blends in pretty well and the angle worked out very well. I was expecting to reprint at least once to get the right angle for proper framing but this is about perfect

20250225_173333.jpg

Screenshot_20250225_173439_UniFi Protect.jpg

And the probably more gimmick then useful but still cool package camera view
Screenshot_20250225_100637_UniFi Protect.jpg

Much of the fiasco was dealing with this darn chime. In theory it was easy...unexpected complications was the amount of framing and sheathing behind that drywall which made the install of the hole for the speaker enclosure anything but simple. Eventually the day was won....cleaning up the cables hanging loose in the coat closet with some adhesive backed wire mold is a task for later this week, along with painting the beauty ring to match the wall color

Idk I think the package cam is cool. With my Reolink doorbell I can see people great but not much of the stoop or small packages very well.

It does give a nice view of the packages, even if it's a small one leaned up against the corner by the door which is partially out of frame, however it seems to do such a good job of properly detecting and "flagging" people/activities in the software that I'm already going to have been able to be alerted/review the footage of the delivery being dropped off that I'll know it's there. There is some sort of "package" specific alert/trigger that it looks to be able to do, so that may be something I will look into that could use as a trigger for a light flashing or a light bulb going to a different color signaling a package to be retrieved.

I do need to do some more learning then fine tuning on the software, as of now I haven't really touched it and it's picking up every car driving by on the street as an event....not something I'm looking for. But looks to be some zones and "lines" I can setup so that alerts/recordings are based on what I want and not everyone driving past....interesting looking heatmap showing it's "vehicle alerts" and the zones where it's being picked up:

camera heatmap.jpg

So it at least makes it very obvious where I need to exclude vehicle detections which is handy

But with a few last "unscheduled" days left, dropped the kids off this morning and headed south to KC to visit a family member and had enough time on the way back to stop at what should be considered as close to "cool tool Taj Mahal" as it gets....Harry J. Epstein! It's been several years since I've had a chance to visit in person, but I often get in an online order or two a year but for those unfamiliar with it....if there was every a Garage Journal Punchcard of places members should visit....this is on the list! More details at their website: https://www.harryepstein.com/

I spent 45 minutes or so in there this time and made sure to wander all the floors. The first floor is a lot of the "new" stuff with probably the largest in stock selection of Wera and Koken I've seen but also tons of other great tools, primarily USA made but including some quality Euro and Japanese stuff here and there. I grabbed some pictures of some of the more "unique" things I saw....

harry1.jpg

Anyone need big sockets? Made in USA Wright

harry2.jpg

Still got tons of Malco Eagle Grip made in Nebraska Locking Pliers

harry4.jpg

If you haven't tried these....they're nice. I picked up a number of them on a Epstein sale a year or so ago...they look and feel so good in the hand!

Their new tool selection is great, but to me the fun part is poking around the basement and floors 2 and 3 to see what less common, overstock, liquidation type stuff they've got.

I laughed more then I should when I saw this ammo can in the basement with some of their loose/misc sockets

harry3.jpg

It was, as expected...empty!

One of the upper floors...just all kinds of cool stuff and you're free to wander thru and look at your leisure

harry5.jpg

Should've held this up to take the picture...10.5 lb deadblow...and from their website I missed the even bigger 12 lb one
harry6.jpg

In case you want one: https://www.harryepstein.com/products/hammers-soft-face-hammers-25757?variant=47458569945385

Entire create of 24" machinist squares:

harry7.jpg

Story on these was they were slightly out of tolerance to be sold new, so they got several crates in a close out/liquidation style opportunity. I had already grabbed a 12" square from the same source off the 1st floor, and when I saw these I knew I had to have one if price was right. $75/each was right enough

harry8.jpg

The .002 written on the blade is how much it was measured to be off....so more accurate than I am for what I'm doing! I'll try and get some better pictures of the squares and the new Vessel screwdriver set I picked up later.

In short....the store is seriously cool for anyone who enjoys tools or the "thrill" of the hunt to just wander and look around. The crew there is exceptionally nice and helpful and if you're around on the last Saturday of the month they put on the aprons and do pancakes from 9 to 1! Hard to beat something like that....so if you're passing thru or in the area and never been...look them up I think you'll find it's worth the time!

In garage related updates....back to trying to chase "cheap" fixes on the truck P06DD oil pressure fault had me changing oil/filter last night as some online reports had that clearing it out. Unfortunately it came back on the return trip from KC so cheap fix there didn't work....so going to have to learn more on what the actual fix here is

Love that place! Always leave with much less money than I started with!

It's about like a Costco trip for the family...amazingly it always ends up being more then $150...though for the 2 squares and screwdriver set it was $175 something I think so I didn't think that was bad....cheaper than the boot store stop just before it

After some shuffling it even has a pretty decent home where I can leave it plugged in and out of the way but easily get to it, use it and then put the hose back.

20250228_124622.jpg

Also trying to find a home for the new squares so pulled out a sheet of the kaizen foam. Will layout with a knife to make the outline and peel some of the foam off but will be using the cordless trim router with a foam bit(and the vacuum) to clean up the pockets and the bottom of the cutouts

Milescraft wide base on the trim router

20250301_134611.jpg

With a 4" long 1/4" shank spiral upcut bit and vacuum

20250301_134615.jpg

Makes a nice foam cutter

20250301_134632.jpg

20250301_135731.jpg

Will need to find or buy a shorter length bit for some of this but it took probably 5 minutes to hog out the foam for the big square. With it proved out it works well and doesn't make a giant mess I can work on laying out then cutting the outline of the rest of the stuff

Little more progress last night on the foam drawer project.

2da08001-7958-49fd-8913-b8ca6bda5ed6.jpg

This morning's goal after getting the kids fed may be loading them up and going on a hunt for a shorter spiral bit locally so I can get these to the desired depth this afternoon. I'd like to get this drawer back together tonight so it's done and off the bench....probably wishful thinking

Wow, you went all in on the dust collector. Not really it’s intended use but one thing I love to use it for is vacuuming out the cars, since it still works great on low suction and is so much quieter than my shop vac. Hope you like it.

The marking / measuring foam drawer is looking good. Interesting technique with the router and spiral bit… I’ve wondered if that would work. I find Kaizen extremely difficult to pluck the layers cleanly. Normally I cut the shape all the way through, then peel the needed depth off the bottom and place the piece back. That way the indented surface is actually the original top layer, nice and clean. Would mess up the two-tone you’ve got going on, but works ok with solid color.

Never heard of it but the Harry Epstein store looks sweet.

Re: the doorbell automation, a light would work well but if there is a package sensor that passes through to Home Assistant and you have a compatible speaker (smart speaker, Sonos, HomePod, etc), you could have it announce when a package is delivered in real time. Or if you want to get fancy you could use a motion sensor to announce there is a package when you pass by the front door.
