48x48 post and beam monitor build

Once this winter breaks I'll finally be starting my garage. I've grown up always having plenty of space to work on my many projects. Since my wife and I bought out house 1 1/2 years ago and it didn't have a garage I'm finally getting ready to build my own.
Here is my plan please chime in with comments and suggestions.
40x60x12 stick built with 2' of block above grade and 10' studded walls on top. Attic trusses
Steel siding and roofing
Radiant flooring (can't ever go back)
5" slab throughout.

A few things that I'm still up in the air about is what to do for a drain system. I live in upstate NY so my vehicles are always covered in snow and melting on the floor.
Another thing is what to do for insulation upstairs. I'm planning on blowing cellose on the ceiling of the shop which will be covered with osb.
I'd like to dense pack the walls of garage but not sure if funds will permit as I'm reaching my cap.
Also unsure of how I'm going to heat. I can get all the free wood(pallets) I want from my work but I don't know if I want to depend on that.
Please feel free to give pointers as I'm still young. Thanks in advance

What to do for a drain system?.......you put a pipe in the floor, with a catch basin on the garage end, and run the pipe outside. Sounds like a great size. Good luck!

Good luck on your build. I have a 40' x 60' x 12'6" shop as well.
I have two 12' wide x 10' tall doors. There is also a full bath, kitchen, and office with a mezzanine above that.
So the suggestions:
1- go at least 14' tall walls if you can. I have approx 4' of head room for my mezzanine and if you have a motorhome now or in the future it won't fit in a 12' shop.
2- floor drains. I have a single 3" drain line. The cement guys did a great job leveling to the drain but I wish I had a troft style.
3- get two 220 plugs at either end of the shop. Trust me.

I went for years without a shop... Now it's hard to imagine being without one. Looking forward to your updates.

Is your build thread on here?
I'm going to have a few 220 plugs around the shop as I love to weld. The trough style drain is what I'm looking at building in mine. It's easier to clean and less messing around with pouring the pad. Just pitch towards it. Not trying to pitch many circles for other styles. I was originally at 14' walls but dropped it for less hearing space and I'm not planning on getting a camper. We have a few camps on the water that we use. Other than that it's tent camping lol.

Figured it was time to update this post. I've chanced my plans to cut some costs and not have the "typical pole barn" look. Not hating just way to many in my area. Now with the new design, I'm going 48x48 monitor style timber frame. I priced out kits for my timbers and they were outrageous!!!! So my timbers are now cut and going to be planed in the next week. We will be finishing the pad in two weeks.( our snow just melted so it's gotta dry out) the center section of garage is going to be 18' wide and 12' ceiling. Both leantos are enclosed and open on the inside. I'm going to have a 7' finished upstairs above the garage for storage and catch all.
I am planning for my lift to be about 15' off the back wall in the center section. Does that sound about right? Any comments or suggestions feel free to chime in

I like your style!

What type doors do you have in mind? I really like the looks of sliding "barn" doors, but they are problematic for sealing out cold/hot and varmits!!

I'm going to have a 12' wide 10' tall overhead in the center and a 9' wide 8' tall overhead on the right side. Man door is going on left side. I just had my attic sprayed with closed cell winter blend spray foam and it was pretty reasonable so I may seal up the garage using that depending in cost. My 2" polystyrene foam board got delivered the other day for under slab and I found a steal on CL for 2000' of pex, durock and 12-2 wire so I'm starting to collect things as I find them to same some cash

We're making a planer similar to the top of this structure to plane the beams instead of man handling them to move into garage and using the big a** hand planer. Should start making that in the next couple days. Got the planer head from an old timer. It has 6 blades so should do a good job. Let the fun begin

i havent been on here in a while figured its time to update my status. concrete is poured, 2 courses of block are layed and core filled. today i wrapped the slab and blocks with 2" of polystirine foam(same thats under pad) and screwed tapcons through durarock to protect the foam. tomorrow were going to parge the rock and the pad will officially be done. in the mean time my original plan of timber framing has gone down the tubes. the person that was supposed to help me with all the jointery backed out so now im building a "post and beam" barn using timberlinx. my neighbor has used these in the past and says they worked great. there kinda pricy but not nearly as much as paying for someone to cut a timber frame. pictures to come!!

Not to bad. More to do still. Had to go to work

Looking good, I do like the design of the shop. I wish I had 40', mine is only 30x60 and I always need more depth.

Love that design too. Some beautiful beams, what were they cut out of? How long do they have to dry? Beautiful landscape too. Subscribed

Beams are a mix Doug fir, white pine, red pine and hemlock. They have been drying for 4 months now. I don't want them to get too dry before I get them in place. I want them to dry and get tighter while standing. They will have some amazing colors when there dried and possibly oiled. Thanks for compliments. A lot of work but it will pay off when it's standing

Well guys after all the hard work cutting and milling all those beams there not going to get used. The guy who was going to be helping me build got put on the exact opposite shift as me. So I'm going to stick build my garage with either attic truss or standard trusses. Waiting to get the prices on those. I'm disappointed but I want my garage built before snow flies and I can do it this way on my own. I'll start framing walls up this weekend if all goes well. Anyone building that style barn in the NY area let me know if your interested in beams, 2x10x20's or 2x10x12's all hemlock.

All the materials for my walls got delivered Friday afternoon so yesterday it was build time. We started building the east and west walls and got them stood up yesterday. Today were going to work on north and south walls. I'm going to be waiting on my trusses because of the last minute change. Going with a 5/12 pitch half attic truss in the back half of garage. Here are csome pics of the updates

Oh yeah my gun shot a double and I had my thumb too close. Felt it hit the bone so it's a little sore

After using the forks on the tractor so set the wall I smartened up and grabbed the pic pole but didn't have a good way to unhook the strap so I sent the monkey up lol

One of the helpers

Last section of west wall going up

My wife And my nephew cutting studs along with the dogs

Both walls all done

Huntmaster86 would you mind posting some pictures of the poles you used for lifting with your loader. I'm looking for some ideas on doing the same. Like your build
