Hello, my name is Chris and here's my build.

I live in Northwestern Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have 25 acres in the middle of my family's farm (~400 acres) that has been in the family since the 1700s. I have lived within a quarter mile of where I do now for all of my 31 years. I grew up on this land, and know every rock, tree, and ground hog hole on it. It's a special place to me, and I cannot see myself living anywhere else, in spite of being so close to family ALL OF THE TIME.

My wife and I built a house on our land 5 years ago, and are now putting up a pole barn. As the title indicates, its dimensions will be 40x60x12. As I will probably live here until the day I die, I wanted this build to be as big as I could afford. It will have scissor trusses in a 20x40 area. I plan to frame off that section of the building to become a work bay/area. The rest of the building will be for storage/general gargage/shop/barn space. It will have two garage doors (18x10 & 10x10) and one man door. The floor will be concrete, and there will be an additional 30x45 concrete pad out front. That is pretty much as far as I have thought out at this point. As a federal employee, I am staring down the barrel of the prospect of 15 furlough days in 2014, so I may be a little slow to make this a finished product. But, I have patience.

I always look for dollar amounts when I read the threads here, so I'll share mine. The cost of excavation, stone, and concrete is going to run me about $15k. The building itself is $34k, erected.

Excavation starts today.

The crew arrived at 9am this morning (from PA) and wasted no time getting to work. Here's the foreman Ben getting things laid out...

Beautiful property and MUCHO garage envy for your 40'x60' build . . . sounds like you are building it RIGHT the first time !!!

Keep the pics coming and good luck with build.

Now would be good time to Update GJ Profile with your location in VA.

Setting the first truss yesterday afternoon...

I took a few pictures and Google stitched them together. The motion is a little wonky due to me moving around between pictures, but it's kinda cool nonetheless, I think.

I came home to a roof.

They also installed the man door and put up the siding on the far gable end after I took this picture. The remnants of tropical storm Karen are overhead, so I'm not sure what the plan for tomorrow is.

That looks great. I'm looking into building one soon on my little 3 acres in Texas and framing part of it for living in a few years.

Thanks.

It is a complete muddy mess out there right now. The crew finished everything they could under roof and went back to PA for the weekend. They will return early next week to finish the siding and install the garage doors.

I just had another hay barn built last week. 40X70X18. Looks very similar to yours except mine is open on one end and of course don't have any doors. Material and labor was just under 16 grand.

Awesome history on the property with your family. Thank you for sharing numbers, I am always looking for that too. Looks like a very good price (for my area anyway, everything is expensive out here).

The builders finished up the siding, and started on the doors and finish trim.

I had the day off, so I had 15 tons of #3 stone delivered and spread that over the driveway extension to try and firm things up.

Here's a panoramic of the backside of the building.

The building should be done tomorrow. Once the government (my employer) figures things out, I'll go forward with the concrete.

That mud is no fun... We had a nice storm go through right after the excavation was complete here, and it rained for three solid days! Luckily, most of my acutal building site was scraped out of hard shale, so it stayed nice and firm, However one of the new drives leading to it became a mucky, soaked clay mess! Really puts a damper on construction!

Yeah, the mud was really nasty. We have received about 7" of rain this month, with 4" of that coming after construction started last week.

Thanks.

On the right side, I plan to frame off and finish a 20x40 area that will be a clean(er) workspace. The 20' mark is just left of the man door in the picture. I plan to install a 2 post lift in there.

The rest of the building will probably be left unfinished and just be simple storage/garage space.

I added another band of 2x6s below the skirt boards the builder set. Concrete is scheduled to be poured Thursday and Friday.

That view out the back is stunning!
Nice building, it amazes me how that sort of construction doesn't exist here in Uganda.
We would build the whole thing out of steel which must be more expensive.

Looks great.

Crappy picture, but you can see the size of the pad. Our 14 year old foster son wanted the basketball goal to be a priority once the concrete was poured. That is going to provide many hours of entertainment. Getting a bit chilly for outdoor basketball this time of year, though...
