Hello, my name is Chris and here's my build.
I live in Northwestern Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have 25 acres in the middle of my family's farm (~400 acres) that has been in the family since the 1700s. I have lived within a quarter mile of where I do now for all of my 31 years. I grew up on this land, and know every rock, tree, and ground hog hole on it. It's a special place to me, and I cannot see myself living anywhere else, in spite of being so close to family ALL OF THE TIME.
My wife and I built a house on our land 5 years ago, and are now putting up a pole barn. As the title indicates, its dimensions will be 40x60x12. As I will probably live here until the day I die, I wanted this build to be as big as I could afford. It will have scissor trusses in a 20x40 area. I plan to frame off that section of the building to become a work bay/area. The rest of the building will be for storage/general gargage/shop/barn space. It will have two garage doors (18x10 & 10x10) and one man door. The floor will be concrete, and there will be an additional 30x45 concrete pad out front. That is pretty much as far as I have thought out at this point. As a federal employee, I am staring down the barrel of the prospect of 15 furlough days in 2014, so I may be a little slow to make this a finished product. But, I have patience.
I always look for dollar amounts when I read the threads here, so I'll share mine. The cost of excavation, stone, and concrete is going to run me about $15k. The building itself is $34k, erected.
Excavation starts today.
