Thanks, I hadn't put that much thought into it:
8. When the flag is displayed in a manner other than by being flown from a staff, it should be displayed flat, whether indoors or out. When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way, that is with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street. When festoons, rosettes or drapings are desired, bunting of blue, white and red should be used, but never the flag.

Tom, this is a very cool build. Having the man cave area as well as a very nice shop is about as good as it gets in my book. Spray foam, radiant heat..awesome.

Thanks Dennis - I have more projects planned for the shop - the apartment - well at least the phase two portion is now complete (tiling that d#@*% shower!!) and i can get my final inspection!!
The shower will be glassed in but that has to be measured and the glass has to be cut etc - glass not necessary for the final inspection as most of you know

The apt is ~ 14x40....550sf
It really is much bigger than i had anticipated and more than enough for my needs.
I am looking forward to doing something clever with the loft space above the apartment - I am having some stairs built as part of the next phase of my project and a lift system to get heavy objects up there with ease.
anticipated future use will be computer area/office - storage - command central for the shop sound system (klipsch speakers and mcintosh amp).
I see myself retiring up there in about 10 years or so - the place is paid for and taxes are dirt cheap (under 800 bux for the year!!)
Good luck with your place, its a good size building and I don't regret a thing!!!

A lil update for you GJérs....the shower is finally done!! The shop and the apartment passed final inspection by the county.
Just a few more projects that I am paying a professional for....then the rest will be on me over the course of the next several months. Over the next two weeks, I am having a staircase built to get up to the mezzanine, get my aluminum i-beam installed with the trolley/hoist set-up....and finally, a wall mounted SS exhaust over the stove.
Spring should arrive in a few months and the boats will be out of the shop and in the water. I am going to buy some fiberglass insulation and 3/8" OSB and section by section, cover up the walls and finish everything off, will document as things progress.

Hello all
Friday my stairs were built - finally!! A huge relief so now I can start working on and in my loft space above the apartment.
Next on the list will be to install the I-beam and hoist. The I-Beam weighs 81 lbs and the trolly/electric hoist adds another 90 lbs or so. The trusses were beefed up by my contractor several months ago in anticipation of this installation...I probably wont lift more the 300-400 lbs. My contractor hopes to get the whole contraption installed this week

What an excellent work space and man cave / apartment you have here. Very well thought out and nice attention to details. Don't fool yourself - you say your garage isn't as nice as many GJ'ers but I'm pretty sure yours has most of us envious! Love all the photos too, thanks for taking the time to chronicle your journey!

...i DID spend quite a bit of time planning it out and got some great ideas from many GJ'ers...i am truly very grateful for my good fortune, but I love drooling at the builds (and talents) of others!!As i look at the calendar, this build started 11 months ago and it is almost done.
Another project that I failed to mention was building a railing along the loft - it will have a section by the hoist where the doors will swing in for "cargo" (junk??) destined for loft storage

Finally getting near the end of phase two of my project. The hoist is installed and working as I had hoped. The aluminum I Beam weighs 81 lbs and the hoist and trolley weigh close to 90 lbs combined - trusses fortified during construction to support extra weight for occasional lifting from garage floor area to loft.
Was able to hoist two older tool boxes that I am going to clean-up and re-furbish - the system worked like a charm. Over the next several weeks I will bring up my Klipsh k-horns and LaScalas up to the loft with the hoist - those puppies are heavy!!
Started my project of adding extra insulation and covering with 7/16 osb. Once the loft is complete, I will paint the osb white and make the loft office space, command central for security system and Mcintosh/Klipsch music area .
Over the course of the summer and fall i will finish off the rest of the shop (hopefully)

This weekend I finished my 16' work bench.....i put casters on the legs so it can be moved easily if need be (its rolls and maneuvers beautifully) - especially when i epoxy my floor this summer - the bench is not pretty, but should be quite functional (hopefully) -
It stands 41" high ( I am 6'3" so it is fine for my height!) and is 34" deep
i purchased a vise that i will attached to it next weekend
once i am done insulating the loft and installing the osb ( which i will then paint white) , i am going to lay an artificial turf/grass like product so i can practice my putting whenever i'd like....i have to source it and price it out, its a 14' x 39' area
The three boats should all be in the water by early May

Nice build, I have an Aunt & Uncle that just closed on a property on Bird lake last Friday.

Thanks !! Its a nice lake albeit smallish - 113 acres so they say!
I like the lake rules...no wake from 7:30pm to 11am daily.....and because it is so small (relatively speaking), all boat/jet ski traffic has to go counter clock-wise...great for safety!
lots of nice peeps on the lake....the Fourth of July should not be missed if possible...some folks put on a pretty darn good show the last 2 years!

Awesome build! Subscribed! Quick question, I'm working through a remodel on a home in central wisconsin and the boss is set on a grey flooring like you have with dark cabinets. It may just be my computer but are your cabinets a true black or a really deep brown? Thanks! Looking forward to more of this build!

The cabinets are a dark/rich brown...i believe the color is called coffee....
If memory serves, the maker is Kountry Kabinets..(decent quality - about 2200 bux for all the kitchen cabs you see in the pics) ..and I bought them @ HOBO - it seems like they serve Wisconsin and Northern Illinois

Its been awhile since I have posted anything, mainly because not too much has happened
I have been slowly but surely adding r13 insulation (in my loft area) to the already insulated spray foam insulated walls before I cover with 7/16" OSB and paint (white most likely)
I recently bought a 2007 JLG scissor lift with 248 hours - this contraption will be invaluable as i tackle the insulation and OSB for the 16' portion of the walls - there is a lot of real estate to cover and I will be doing that over the next few months
The shot with the fans is the before pic - i ordered light kits for each and will use the JLG to get me up there to install the light kits next weekend
I've included a shot of my amcrest screen - i have an 8 port dvr and I have to say, its been very reliable and very easy to set-up, once the last pontoon boat leaves the garage, I will put an extra camera in that corner
On to the pics......

Installed the light kits for the ceiling fans this weekend... the scissor lift made that whole project almost effortless
Grass is coming in pretty well - slowly but surely - next year i will have it professionally graded and landscaped - for now, just need to get some grass growing to avoid a muddy mess

Just read through your thread, awesome build! Actually been thinking about building the same exact thing myself instead of buying a house and then having to build a shop. I have a couple questions though. I may have missed it, but do you have any plans for A/C in the apartment? And if you were to do it again, would you make the living space any bigger to add a 2nd bedroom or a larger living room?

YES...i am having my contractor install AC in the next few months when things slow down for him - it will be ducted thru the loft down into the apt - a bonus would be supplemental heat if needed.
when i made the decision to live in the apartment (on the weekends/cuz its a 2nd home) it was because my fiance at the time suggested we live there as opposed to the the 3br trailer next door. At that point, i scrambled to make the apartment a lil bit nicer for us ( it was always planned in my head to be a guest space for my sister and BIL.)
size wise, i think its fine (for now) - 3 boats and 2 cars in the shop in the winter - it DOES fill-up fast especially since i am planing on buying an ATV and a plow and i have to keep a cargo trailer outside )
what would i have done differently? - i would have made the eaves/overhang farther out - but the apartment living space (550 sf ) is fine for 2 people...a window AC unit keeps the whole apartment cool on hot muggy days (but noisy and inefficient of course) otherwise we are outside on the boats most of the summer
LONG term plan is to knock down the aforementioned trailer and build a 40' x 50' structure and that i can retire in - 10' ceilings - open concept 2br 2 bath with a gym and another modest garage
it seems the consensus on the board is to build as big as you can afford because it will fill-up fast ( i found that to be true!!)

Not too much happening on the inside of the pole barn this summer- getting ready to pour some concrete for the north side of the building; before i could do that, my contractor suggested adding a retaining wall
Sooooooooooooooooo the retaining wall install will happen this week...65' wide x 3' tall
Concrete will pour the following week - a 72' x 8' walkway 5" thick
Inside project of adding extra insulation and OSB to the walls will resume in a few more weeks as time permits on the weekends I am up there.

Your build thread has been very informative and will likely serve as a template for my shop build next spring. So now that you seem to be 95% done, Did you keep close track of what you ended up spending compared to your estimated cost before hand? Was it close? Do you mind sharing those numbers?

The only two items that are on my $$$ radar are winter projects:
1) exhaust vent install over stove
2) sliding barn door (with glass) to separate shop from apartment
The rest of the projects I have planned will be completed by myself and friends - the two above are going to be handled by my contractor
I have a general idea of what i spent, but not an exact dollar amount.....i feel comfortable sharing those privately

No worries Trav - i will get the brand of led lights we used on the inside and let you know.
My electrician picked them out after i told him i wanted more light than i will ever need - my pics never do the actual lighting/brightness any justice
as far as the outside lighting, i live in a VERY dark/rural area......i now wish i had eaves that stuck out another 12-18 inches and that there would be lighting in the eaves
anxious to see how your build turns out - what cha got planned for it???? any more questions, feel free to ask i'm glad to help!!

Haven't posted in a while so:
Bought an ATV as my Christmas present and a Boss plow and a VERY handy leaf sweeper made by Ohio Steel products (works REALLY well - PITA to put together though!!)
Also using a portion of the garage for my golf simulator
Kitchen/oven exhaust is complete as well
Boats are ready to get wet - 3-4 weeks I am thinkin' for lower Michigan
Still working on the walls as time permits - will take more pics this weekend
