Today we got metal on the sides of the equipment shed. We also got most of the concrete forms for the shop/apartment stem walls in and wired in place. Trucking right along.

Trucking right along is right. You're making fantastic progress. Looks like the weather has been cooperating as well which definitely helps as well.

Today the very last of the metal went on the equipment shed and the 200 amp service was installed.

For the Shop/Apartment we finished installing the styrofoam ICF blocks that will act as the foundation stem walls forms and become a permanent insulation for the building (R-20). We're going to pour the foundation Monday.

Tomorrow we'll do a little bracing and last minute squaring and then form a patio to take the excess concrete (if any).

In this picture you can see where my 12'x12', 14'x14' and 12'x12' roll up doors will be in the photo. One of the 12 foot bays will have an Atlas or Bendpak lift when we're done. We'll also have radiant heat throughout the entire building.

Yes we are finally getting to the 60's for highs and the lows are above freezing. This week was tee-shirt weather several days in a row.

Look at the amazing blue sky!!!! We braced the Shop/Apartment foundation stem walls and squared everything up. All ready to pour concrete Monday.

Today it took a little longer than we thought to brace as SWMBO had a change order and we went from 6 foot sliders in the apartment to 12 foot French sliders (4 panel). We had to remove additional foundation blocks and rebar to accommodate this change.

We were a little bored today so we dug out a 6 foot x 36 foot slab and put gravel in. Tomorrow we'll roll it with a compactor and then form it to hold our extra concrete from the stem wall pour. I over ordered so I'm sure I won't run short. This slab will be used to hold the future Diesel and Gas tanks we're putting in for our fuel station.

Cool, I remember I used to keep a 55 gallon drum of vp race fuel, I t was nice being able to get gas any time you need it.

Yeah, and with the prices as low as they are right now ($1.65/gal red dye, and $1.74/gal for unleaded) I figure it's a good time to get a fuel station setup.

I'm going to go with a 250 double wall for the gasoline and I have a friend with an old 300 for the diesel.

Today we rolled the slab next to shop to accept the "extra" concrete, formed the slab, leveled it, staked it and got ready to pour the Shop/Apartment stem walls at 10:00 AM. The trucks rolled in on time and with the help of Chirp, John Torres, and SWMBO we got the stem walls poured, and the slab poured and broom finished. All by 1:00 PM!

That's going to be a nice set of buildings. I'm following a guy on youtube who's using ICF to build a 2 story home in southern Arizona and it seems like a great way to make an extremely strong, well insulated structure. Instead of only rebar he's using a steel "fiber" product called Helix, which seems to be to make pouring concrete in to internally braced forms a lot easier as there's no solid shafts of steel to work the concrete around. The only rebar is between foundation and stories and above windows and doors. It's supposed to be superior to wire mesh or rebar in a slab, too, but I still have reservations about that, especially around the edges.

How do you plan to cover the foam to protect it from the elements? Also, are you pouring a slab for the equipment shed, or will it just be left open with a dirt floor?

Thanks!.

On the metal portion of the building (which is the three walls 59x41 that are the "shop" (as opposed to the apartment) I'm going to cover the foam on the outside with a drip cap that fits under the vertical panel and over the foam and then tuck a short (12") piece of metal wainscot into that to meet the ground.

The apartment is going to be sided in wood to give it more of a house-type feeling. There we'll fabricate the equivalent for wood.

The equipment shed is going to be left open, with the floor dug out 3", filled with 3/4 minus and compacted. In the future if I enclose it I'll pour a slab first. It'll take 50 yards +- to pour a 6" slab in there, which is $5,500 here before finishing. It's too big for me to finish.

That said, with the height and span it does a great job of keeping the equipment dry even with the high winds and rain we get here in Western Montana.

I'm very happy with it for the cost, which was about $13/foot with my labor at $0/hour.

I did sub out setting the trusses, and putting the metal on, FWIW.

We're still waiting for the main Shop/Apartment (aka Shopiminium) stem walls we poured Monday to cure. So today we dug out 4 inches of top soil inside the Equipment Shed and hauled it over to our (now) giant topsoil pile.

Tomorrow we will put road base and then 3/4 minus in the equipment shed and roll it smooth. That should happen by lunch time.

After lunch we'll begin back filling the stem walls on the Shopiminium and prep the grade for the slab pour which hopefully can happen early next week.

Critical Path is: Backfill->Slab Prep->Slab Pour->Framing

We have some non-critical (but important tasks) like ordering Windows and Doors and Lumber and Trusses and Roof that all need to happen as well.

Plenty to do for sure!

We got all the dirt out of the shop and the apron in front and compacted it with a roller.

Today we backfilled the foundation for the "Shopiminium" on the outside. Next week we'll backfill and compact the interior in prep for the slab pour.

Well the last few days we've been backfilling, compacting and measuring the to get up to grade. Not very exciting. I have spent a lot of time on a"jumping jack". It's a 200 pound gas powered **** kicking machine. Literally. Running that thing over and over is about as much fun as a fist fight you lost. Ugh.

We should be done compacting tomorrow and then we'll dig in the plumbing.

Do they make a compactor that would go on your tractor...seems like it would be a little easier on you!

I saw one last night on the Paladin equipment site. It attached to an excavator. But the budget is straining so there is no more equipment in the near future :-(

SWMBO is getting nice windows and we have to save some money to purchase trees and cows.

Yesterday we finished compacting the foundation. Monday we install the sewer line and then we're ready to pour as soon as the weather allows!

We had large berms around the foundation, which were the dirt we excavated for the footings and stem alls. These had been flattened so the concrete trucks could get in. We needed to remove them so that we can get the pump truck in, and return the area around the foundation to grade so the framers can comfortably access the pad. Plus, I like a neat job site and so today we moved all that earth to a large pile and regraded outside the foundation.

Coming along nicely! How many months of nice weather before it gets cold?Planning on being living there before then?
My wife spent a winter at the airbase in Glasgow before we met and nearly froze to death. From your pics you're in the mountains somewhere west.

Nice weather starts in Mid April and lasts until September usually with an indian summer in November. It's best to figure boating season (for fishermen) is Late April through September. For bikini boaters is is Memorial day through Labor day. Western Montana is mild as compared to the High Line and the east.

We're planning on being out of out current house no later than July 10. I expect that will mean we will have a dry building for our belongings and we'll be in the camper. I'll then have three months to finish the interior before it gets cold.

My main concern is the drywall. Lots of sheets 17 feet int he air to do the lid.

Yesterday we dug in the plumbing stub outs in the slab and recompacted. It was awesome to bring this phase of the build to a close. I was very happy to return the jumping jack. I rolled my ankle two weeks ago and have been working on it in any event. The jumping jack didn't make it any better.

We are now ready for the concrete subcontractor, who is just waiting on good weather. It is supposed to rain all week. Once we have a slab we can start framing and set trusses.

The plumber had a neat little widget for holding his string lines on the walls. I need to make one one!

It took nine weeks to go from empty pasture to where we are today. Time to lessen the pace a bit and maybe do some fishing.

The 50' x 50' garden is finished and my wife is planting. She's making great progress, about half planted. Should be done today.

Got an update from the concrete finisher and rebar goes in tomorrow and we pour Friday.

So I woke up the other night and realized I needed to avoid a potential problem. I am installing in-floor heat in the shop and apartment. I also plan on installing a (Bendpak?) lift. I realized that I need to make sure there is no in-floor heating tubes under the area we will drill into for anchoring the lift.

This led to me having to commit to where the lift will be in the shop, which is something I hadn't finalized. I know I want it on the west 12' bay, but the question is put it close to the door or further back. There's 41 feet of depth. After thinking about it I decided to put it further back. About 22-26' from the front of the shop.

I need to read up on symmetric v. asymmetric lifts and make that decision. I know there's a ton of prior posts on the topic.

Yesterday I finished grading out the floor of the equipment shed enough to go ahead and start using it. I've got one empty bay (which the truck camper will occupy), so I think I did OK on the size. The depth is what I wanted so the pontoon boat is out of the weather. All in all I think it turned out how I expected it would.

The in-floor heating PEX is in place and we're pouring at 0530 tomorrow. Roof trusses are being delivered tomorrow at 0800. All of this is a "hurry up offense" to avoid the Trout Creek Hwy 200 Bridge closure. Tomorrow is the last working day before the bridge is closed. All the hard work is paying off. We beat the closure.
