42' X 36' stick build

After months living at our new home in NC, I have finally gotten started on a garage. It will be all stick built, all brick to match the home with a storage loft. Due to the building standards in our neighborhood I was limited with the height of the building. Though, it will have a 10/12 pitch to the roof. So, with the use of scissor trusses and the 10' walls, I should have plenty of room for a lift. Still trying to decide on a 4 post or 2.

This garage size came about due to our lot, there was such a drop off at one side going wider meant a taller stem wall which meant bringing in an engineer to deal with the footings. Also, I did't want something industrial looking to be out of scale to the house.

This garage will be used for some collector cars, a workshop, and parts storage. I'm hoping I will be able to squeeze in 5 or 6 cars.

The excavation was done this week, the footers were dug and poured. It has been very dry here in NC this late summer and fall. The excavators dug down 2 feet and the clay was very dry even that deep.
I had the excavator push all the trees into a large heap, as the cost of disposing of the trees and stumps was going be almost 3 thousand. It will give a place for wildlife to live and supply us for several years of firewood.

Garage is in an area in the woods about 100' to the west of our home. It should complement our property nicely.

That's a beautiful home and lot you have there. Designing the garage to match the house was a good call, and it's going to look great when completed. Given the natural beauty of your setting, I also think you made the right choice regarding placement of the garage. Good luck with your continued progress!

Moving slowly due to waiting on masons, but did receive a few deliveries to have the foundation laid hopefully next week. The brick will be a veneer to cover the blocks.

Masons worked hard for three days; we have a foundation. Next is to backfill and compact to prepare for concrete floor next week, weather permitting.

Some progress. Rain and muddy conditions have prevailed here, preventing the fill to compact properly, so builder decided to skip the concrete now and proceed with framing.

Truck showed up today with roof trusses. Couldn't deliver at the building site due to fear of getting stuck in mud, so were dropped 300 ft. away at the road. This drive was cleared for the construction to avoid damage to our concrete driveway. This drive will be closed off at the end of construction and allowed to go back to nature. Each truss being 38 ft. long, and weighing close to 300 lbs. Framers had to hand carry 23 of these to the site.

Roofers came out last week and finished covering the new garage. Good feeling seeing it under cover. Due to some storm damage last summer with hail, we decided it would be a good time to take care of the house. Insurance paid for the replacement there.

Looks great! It would be interesting to see the interior space with the space provided by the vaulted trusses compared to the storage. Did you split the length or break it up with the doors? 2 stalls storage, 1 vaulted or something along those lines?

I'd guess 10 ft walls? Plenty of room for a lift I'd assume?

Yes, 10 ft. walls. Scissor trusses provide 18 ft. of height at center, so plenty of room for a lift. 2 stalls of scissor trusses. Loft is 16' wide and approximately 20' in length splitting the length of the building. Stairs will be 3' wide to be built after concrete floor is done.

I really like the structural aspects of the interior. Will the end of the loft that meets the scissor trusses remain open, or be fully enclosed with additional framing and drywall?

The ends of the loft trusses will be closed in so it can be insulated. The "room" portion of the attic trusses will have a rail with an opening to allow heavy objects to be hoisted to the storage area.

I got my concrete floors done this week. 4 inches thick and 6 inches in an area to the left side where a lift will go. Workers were here all day laying the concrete and then waiting for it to harden enough to be troweled smoothly. Last guy left at 11:30 PM last night. I really appreciate the dedication of good tradesmen to ensure a job is done right. So many would have called it good enough hours earlier. The temperatures were hovering around 40 all day, and a little damp, so the concrete took a while to set up to be worked.

A few updates since almost 1 month ago. I got the walk through door installed as well as the windows. I constructed stairs to the loft area and installed railings. Waiting for some dry weather so the masons can do the brick veneer.

Finally getting some brick work done. It is turning out nicely. Unfortunately, a wind storm last week revealed a bad tree. I noticed this very tall pine leaning right towards the back of the garage. I looked at the base of the tree and could see the ground heaved up and then saw some cracks at the base. Had I known this was a weak tree I could have dropped it before the building started going up. Cost a few hundred to have removed. The tree guys had a cool machine though.

The 469 is the displacement of my stroked out 440 Mopar engine. LOL. The garage will be storage for a few vehicles I've restored, a workshop, storage for tools, and generally a good place to spend time.

The old garage I had was only 22 X 24. I restored 4 cars in it, but often had to roll a car outside to do work. I wanted to go bigger with this garage under construction, but I think I will love it compared to what I had with the old one.

Haven't decided yet on openers. I have gone back and forth with the question 4 post lift or 2? Each has advantages, right now I am leaning towards a 4 post. Thank you for the compliments.

The rebar was tied and set on some spacers above the base. The walls are 10' all around, the lofts ceiling is about 7.5'. Thanks for the compliments.

Runner: i'm sure there are many many members here that have started or commented on lifts so if you have any questions you might do a search on them over in general garage section and also ask more questions here.

my garage is too small for one, but if I had a big garage I'd probably get a Max Jax to work on cars and maybe a 4 post lift I wanted to store a couple. there are a ton of choices so really depends on your needs and budget, but like i said there are so many members on here that own lifts I'm happy they allow me to post here cause it could almost be a requirement.

Brick masons were here all last week. They did beautiful work. Also, insulation and drywall were delivered too. I had an itchy couple of days, but the insulation is in. R-38 in ceiling, and R-15 in walls. I am very happy to have all the masonry work finished.

What a beautiful shop! Looks like your contractor is doing a fine job.
I am trying to get started on a similar building, but am blown away with the costs. Here in West Tennessee not only is it hard to find a contractor, but the costs are now ranging from $60-75 a sq ft. That is for a 50x32 , insulated and electrical.
