The only thing in the handle is the valve assembly which is all 1 piece with the trigger. You can remove the inlet bushing and nothing should fall out or be visibly loose. Its 23 or 24mm.

The rattling you are hearing is probably the piston - the actual hammer - bouncing back and forth in the barrel. This is normal. The barrel is like a 3" long with 1" piston inside and its clunking back and forth when you handle the gun.

As for the air leak, if it leaks while plugged to a hose this points to the vibration dampening system - it's always pressurized. Sometimes the barrel, or rather the long aluminium sleeve around the actual barrel comes loose and slowly unscrews it self out of the main body. The fix is to screw it right back in and keep working. However, if it comes too far out a steel sleeve inside the handle walks out with the barrel and O-rings sealing the steel sleeve to the main body can jump out of their grooves. And OR get damaged when you tighten the hammer back together.

Said steel sleeve is very thin and it acts as a cylinder, the barrel being the piston - this is the vibration dampening system. Actually rather simple and not many serviceable parts inside.

If you got good deal on the hammer I would contact the seller and inform him of the situation and ask permission to take it a part for inspection. This could be as simple as unscrewing the barrel and putting an O-ring back into the right spot.

Although nothing felt loose initially, I decided to grab the barrel shroud and give it a little more of a twist. It and the ring rotate either direction. Is this too far apart to simply tighten back up without carefully taking it apart first?

#53 sometimes becomes loose - see my previous post.

If it goes out far enough sleeve #49 walks out and the O-rings sealing it to the handle can be displaced or damaged. #47.

I haven't had any brand of bit last longer than 3 minutes of operation with my ph3050b. I'm sure it's not as strong as the .498 guns, but when the tool is so powerful it regularly breaks bits how can you reasonably expect it to be more powerful?

I have broken maybe two hammer bits with my 3050 over the years. They were snap on branded bits and that was after many months of hammering on them. I own the 3050 since new and it never really hit that hard. Mine is probably 10 years old and used regularly. The 717 is a real monster and has broken one Ajax chisel in the twos years that I have it. Sometimes I’m hesitant to use it as it’s so powerful.

loosen the plastic nut - it's just a nut then you can slide the plastic shroud off. Then you can check if the #53 is secure. It should be but if you want to peek inside the hammer you unscrew it and the barrel assembly slides out of the handle with it.

This a fine looking hammer, never been driven over by a bulldozer. Should work fine! :D

Ok, you're the man. I'd love to know how you found those diagrams. I'm having trouble processing them at this hour though. Maybe I should sleep before I tinker with this, haha.

My brain hasn't been working right all day. Forgive me, but when you say "slide the plastic shroud off", do you mean the big long plastic black part that the nut rides on? The whole thing unscrews. Will I have parts everywhere if I take that off? Barrel assembly comes with?

Well one dumb problem is fixed. I'm going to bed. I'll revisit this in the morning. Please forgive my semi-frantic posting. Thanks everyone!

I have one spare RRH6 hammer laying around, I bought it off Ebay not working. Unfortunately It had suffered some nasty **** in the Air supply damaging the vibration dampening system so it's only in semi-working condition. Since we have 3 others this one will become parts for the others if needed.

I will see if I have time today to take it a part and shoot some pictures for you. Removing the barrel assembly from the handle isn't difficult or complex and could shed light on the problem you are dealing with.

That would be amazing. I'm not usually this nervous about taking things apart, but this is a bit of a special case.

Edit: If you can give me your source for those diagrams, that would also be amazing!
