So I recently acquired a 7x rivet gun 'the mean green balljoint machine' Michigan Pneumatic MP-70X because I ran up against a ball joint my Jiffy #600 struggled to get moving. I'm not looking to spend $40-60 for a quick chuck for this gun as it doesn't have a tease trigger so I'll use it less than my 6X. I see that Ajax offers a #899 Beehive spring and washer for .401 but for .498 just a beehive spring. That washer in the 899 spring kit looks like it helps keep the tool from bashing up against the spring and getting wanged up. Is it not that important or not needed for the .498 spring? I can't find a spring and washer kit for .498 anywhere so I'm a little confused by this.
There's the Ajax product page for the .401 kit
I'm not at all interested in the mech aid style springs, they have poor tool retention with even my stronger .401 air hammer. I won't be changing bits a lot so I'm not very bothered by unscrewing the spring each time.

Most likely the same beehive spring for both and the washer just keeps the 401 bits from launching out of the 498 sized end.

I'm pretty sure .401 and .498 use a different diameter thread and different diameter coil, I've tried putting .401 springs on a .498 and they don't fit for at least those two reasons. If I don't need a washer then I won't worry about it too much, just looked like a good addition to help minimize tool bashing for those missed blows that happen sometimes.

This adapter lets toy use 401 diameter sets in a 498 diameter gun.

beehive for 498 diameter rivet gun
I've read some bad reviews of those reducers letting tools mushroom and lock into the barrel, I'd rather just use .401 in my .401 and .498 in my .498.

What I'm asking is should there be a 'washer' for .498 beehive springs like there's a washer for that .401 beehive spring? If there should be, why can't I find it? I suspect the abscence of this washer means it's not actually required or it comes with some other parts in a kit and I've just not ran across it yet.

I don’t have a washer on mine. P. S. The only bit you can use with the beehive is a straight bit. You can’t shove a hammer bit through the beehive spring.

You just saved me like $15 because my dumb *** didn't even think of that one. Mech aid spring it is I guess! :Homer:

We never ran the springs on our rivet guns at work. Too much chance of damage to the aircraft if you dropped a gun in a bad place and it caught the trigger. No spring and it only fired once, with little force and then just bled air, because it ejected the rivet set.
