I am pretty sure 5/8"s drive was historical and popular in its day.

I have a little Snap-On ratchet that started life as a 5/16" drive.
My dealer at the time (in about 1978) swapped the innards for 1/4".
He thought it was a military model.
It has a non-chromed dull finish also.

Yeah, it's crazy!
I'd think 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 cover 98% while 3/4 has got the rest...
Ya forgot about 9/32" drive from the S-O.

I have several goodies that if 1/4" drive would be used daily. At 9/32" drive , well....um....never.

Bought a big lot of 1/4" drive stuff and the 9/32" drive tools crept in.
WTF--they don't fit 1/4" drive tools???? How?????

Yeah ive gotten 5/8 drive snapon sockets at fleamarkets not paying atenttion and thinking their 1/2 drive. I have a black hawk socket in 7/8 drive also. Pretty useless.

If the military wants to prevent theft, why don't they just order tools with a military stamp or US Government laser etch? That would seem like a better solution. A thief will steal anything of value, regardless of drive size but if it is clearly marked, they might be discouraged since they can be easily detected.

Collectors search out the odd drive sizes. While not highly valuable as individual pieces a full kit will command a decent price.
SO 9/32" seems to be the most common found near military towns and the most collected.
All I find is low end Duro-Indestro hex drive stuff and usually pretty worn out.

I just wanted to express my disgust for the pentagonal drive incompatability of the Ti ratchet and sockets tools with square drive.
On the other hand, I wonder if the drive can be swapped on any of them.

I was unaware they still actually made 1/8" drive. Didnt the older sets come with more sizes though? I do find the price to be a little out there...

I wonder this about security bits too. You can buy the driver bits at any auto parts store for less than $5 that will remove about any security screw on the market. I guess you have to try.

It would be a lot easier to just carry a small caliper.

I have a set of mixed snap on/proto 5/8 drive impact sockets. Also have a 5/8" drive impact. Recently picked up a 5/8" drive Walden Ratchet at the flea market for $5.
