Who makes the best plastic five gallon gas can. I have a couple of the Blitz brand that you see everywhere and they don't have a vent hole and it is aggravating trying to fill up my wife's zero radius mower because it holds ten gallons.

You notice, I said my wife's zero radius. The secret to a perfect lawn is to by your wife a shiny new mower. :lol_hitti

Today's plastic gas containers are all effed up. Might consider this kit which includes a vent:

We've started drilling holes and installing tire valve stems with the core removed in all our fuel cans, opposite the pour spot. It also allows a bit of flow control by tightening or loosening the valve cap.

This^^^^ I've converted some of my plastic cans with these. Honestly they're pricey IMO for what they are but I haven't found a better alternative for the plastic cans.

I try to pick up old plastic gas cans at garage sales and, if needed, convert them with the product above.

Valve stem will wear out from the gas sooner or later. Ive used those kits with great success. I prefer scepter brand cans over anything else.

On the other hand I have been hoarding old style gas cans like no tomorrow :)

Plenty good old ones can be found at yard sales and swap meets. New ones sold in stores are junk.

It's metal, but at work we use these. Link The cover is spring loaded & the handle to open it is lined up so you can hold the main top handle & pull the lid open with one hand while the other supports the bottom of the can. You line up the funnel in the filler neck then open the can for flow. Next time I buy one for home I'll probably get one of these.

At home, since I have already bought different types of difficult to pour gas cans, I use a shaker siphon. Link The check valve has a ball inside. Shaking the end back & forth moves the ball & gets the flow started. So you put the can up on something, place the check valve in the fuel, shake the ball up & down to get it started, then gravity does the rest. It flows pretty well. It works in many types of gas cans.

I have the older version of that can called "The Gasser". It's like using a metal garbage can for gasoline. LOL. Of course, Eagle doesn't make any parts for it since it's not a safety can....

Blitz is out of business, Hopkins Mfg (of trailer connector and snow brush fame) bought them out from what I remember.

These sets are fantastic but are $10. a pop.
When I am forced to buy a new gas can, I buy one of these as well
Usually try to keep one ahead when I find them on sale.
I have also converted all my older non-vent cans to vented.
Bought some of the yellow vent caps on ebay. Cans work well now.

You win the internet prize today. I'm so gonna steal that method.

I think there is another thread about this on the GJF and there was a link to a video (probably YouTube) about how to do it. I think the trick is to use all steel valve stems in the cans so the gas doesn't deteriorate the rubber in the valve stems. I have bought the valve stems, but never got around to installing them. The expensive VP race gas jugs work well, have seen many of the being used at the track, but they are expensive!

Thanks guys, I usually go straight to the Internet with my questions but GJ came through this time.

A lot of good ideas.

I have a plastic can from Wal mart and it leaked. I bought 2 Justrite cans from Amazon several years ago and still works and haven't leaked yet.

Not to belabor this discussion but the Justrite can is the only one I found on the market with positive shutoff of the flow. The inlet to the nozzle has a tight sealing valve which is controlled by a lever adjacent to the handle. You squeeze the lever (easy to do while holding the handle) to start and stop the flow. No having to tip the can back and forth to start and stop the flow.

It is by far the easiest gas can I have ever used.

There's a new kid on the block - Surecan - they are plastic with a thumb operated pour spout that is articulated and easy to use particularity in hard to get to tank locations.

They are made local to me in Lebanon, TN.

https://www.surecanusa.com/#feature

2.2 gal gas, 5 gal gas and 5 gal diesel models are available. I bought one of the 2.2 gals last week and it's awesome for chain saws, leaf blowers, etc.

They are elf ventilating and you don't have to tip the container. The fuel comes out the bottom. These are better than any gas cans I have - including the ones with the valve stem modification.

VP jugs all the way. They have screw on vent caps and you can even get a pump for them.

I have the pump and you can even spin it in reverse and **** another jug empty!

Yeah those VP jugs are great. I have red ones for gas and pink for diesel. Get extra caps so you can leave the filler hose attached to the extra cap. That way when its time to pour, you don't have to remove the plug from the cap, screw in the hose, pour the fuel, remove the hose from the cap again and then re-install the plug in the cap. Its much easier to just have an extra cap with the hose already in it. Also, the VP jugs actually hold about 6 gallons instead of just 5 so I like that about them too.

I have a 6 gallon jug with the vent in the spout. It takes forever even when it's working properly, and frustrating while wrestling a 40lb can.

I drilled a hole and threaded in a 1/4-20 bolt. Remove the bolt when pouring the whole can, or leave it in while filling smaller tanks.

Just get some vents off Ebay. Have the EZ pour on my diesel can works great. I think they sell vents on their site also.

No blitz went bankrupt due to lawsuits.

Apparently it is dangerous to poor gas on a open fire using a blitz can. :lol_hitti

We had an American made gas can until lawsuits over stupid people put it out of business.

The only plastic ones worth buying new are the No-Spill brand.
They actually work really well.
I personally like them better than old vented ones because you can hold them in the pour position and then open the valve slowly.
They are a little pricey but worth it as far as I'm concerned.

Yes they work good except you need to cut that stupid lock tab off the cap.

While stupid lawsuits did not help, the real killer was the California Air Resources Board. Too many hydrocarbons being released into the atmosphere from refilling your small gasoline engine with a can that has a vent and a spout that is not self closing.

The No-Spill Gas Can is great for a can that you can hold in the pour position with 1 hand ! I want to see No Spill Jill demo a 5 gallon can.
