5 ton swap out

OK it's 90+ and my 1997 Carrier 5 ton is out. That and the gas heater all installed at the same time. Some of the ducting redone in 2003. I'm having surgery on my hoof on Friday, and being able to sleep is important to the wife and me.

So a Lennox 16 seer system with variable speed FAU/gas heater, with new ducting with dampers is on the table at $19541. They can start tomorrow morning.

1 year no interest financing that I don't need but I'll take it.

I know I'm paying more, but am I paying stupid more?

I don't know about California, but where I'm at that would be well into "stupid more" for a basic change out with existing ducting.

Based on other searches, it's high for sure but I figure I'm paying for the quick install too. They are replacing ducting and adding dampers. Everthing costs more here and then there's the stupid permit--you must have "permission' from the city for stuff like this....

I'm in SoCal.

Last year I did an all new 4ton Carrier system with brand new furnace to match for $5500. A separate quote for Trane was up to $15k.

I'm a 3 quote kinda guy unless its a recommendation from a friend and the quote seems cheap. Your quote seems crazy. Does your costco or sam's do system quotes?

I talked to another fellow who has done work for the family over the years. His assessment, based on the work described, is that I'm paying a $3000+ premium to get it done in two days starting tomorrow. He's not a low cost guy, so he would be a bit higher anyway.

Remind me to do a preemptive strike on the new system in 15 years, not wait till it quits in the middle of summer.

Equipment and materials availability is a factor too. At that price you should get quick, professional install. Hold 'em to it.

That might be the norm in California ?????……..similar to that other post where no one can work for $65/hr gross. Another reason to not live in California.

My recent complete system swap similar to OP was $8k with 10 years parts and labor warranty. One day 2 guys and trainee.
My Lennox estimate was $11k for comparable system was the highest by far.

I just had a 3 ton Trane xl16 system installed with all brand new ductwork, supply and return, for $10,300. Its a heat pump so a gas furnace would have put me closer to 13k likely. That 19k is an insane price!

Well, the OP hopefully got the system installed in 2 days. But then again, we all know how accurate some contractors are in regard to their 'finish' timelines.

Seems pricey to me, but “they can start tomorrow,” it is August. You need it you pay for the fast service. Just hope they do a good job for you.

They sent 5 or 6 guys Wednesday, tapering off to 4. All equipment was out, new equipment in by end of day. Some ducting out. Thursday one guy shows, eventually 4 guys. Ducting almost done, worked until 7:30. Friday 2 guys show at 7AM, attic cleaned out, system running heat or cool and they are gone by 10AM. Final cleanup guy comes at 3PM to take the rest of the debris. Of course. Did it go without a hitch? I had to complain a little, then I really got 'em nervous and on the phone: I started helping. Had to help the last guy load the junk because he brought a 5lb truck for 10lbs of ****. I didn't care by then as the new system is so much better--so quiet you can't tell if it's running unless you are in line with a duct. Much more air where I need it, without much of a sacrifice in other rooms. Next time I will plan it ahead and not wait for it to quit during the summer. (sure I will....) It's bad too pay to much, so bad on me. It's worse to pay too little as my constant service call neighbor has learned. Somewhere out there is the right amount. There's a lot right with this system, the installation and the prompt install. The price was high, but that's the breaks when you ignore those dimming lights on start up and don't notice the run time creeping up to get the place cool. I was in a moderate panic due to pending surgery, but due to what is being termed "vascular insufficiency", I did not have the surgery as my foot was swollen enough to cause it to fly around the room if cut into. Back to nursing my hoof in the cool luxury of--get this-NOT the most expensive system on the block. (Neighbor beat me by $6000 due to asbestos removal and a complicated layout and the fact he had a Jag in the driveway when they figured the price) Thanks to all who tried to knock some sense into me on this.

You'll have forgotten the cost soon enough, and still be happy with the installation. That sounds like a somewhat complicated install and I see now why it was so expensive. Good luck with the foot.

Wow! sounds like it was a big swap out! You had pretty much 5 guys for two days, plus a few hours on Friday. Probably $8K in labor alone. I think you did ok, price is probably a bit high, but they got it done quickly.

Was the Lenox a two speed compressor?

Dampers -- zoning or just for balance? Any rebates ?

Ductwork can add a few K .... just for basic properly done switch outs. Most houses have inadequate ductwork --- especially when doing a 5T. It's hard to tell how much you needed .... for you to need that many people over days ---- it had to be more than a simple swicthout.

Lennox EL16XC1, looks to be single speed.

Dampers are just for balance.

No rebates.

The existing ductwork was a mix of 1997 and 2003. They upsized most of it, including the returns. There are 16 registers and two returns.

They got it in fast but it's not right. They are coming tomorrow to address some concerns.

Haste makes waste.....
